"One Battle After Another" is an American black comedy action-thriller film produced, written, and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It is inspired by the 1990 novel "Vineland" by Thomas Pynchon and features an ensemble cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, with Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti (in her film debut). The story follows an ex-revolutionary who is forced back into his former life of violence when a corrupt military officer pursues him and his daughter. With a budget of $130–175 million, it is the most expensive film of Anderson's career. It garnered widespread acclaim and numerous accolades. These include three wins at the 31st Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), four wins at the 83rd Golden Globes (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy), one win and a record seven nominations at the 32nd Actor Awards (including Outstanding Performance by a Cast), six wins at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film), and thirteen nominations at the 98th Academy Awards (including Best Picture). The American Film Institute also listed the film among the top ten films of 2025, and it won five awards from the National Board of Review (including Best Film), as well as Best Picture prizes from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. "Sinners" is an American horror film produced, written, and directed by Ryan Coogler. Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as identical twin criminal brothers who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South, where they are confronted by a supernatural evil. It co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton (in his film debut), Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo. The film has received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, grossing $369 million worldwide on a $90–100 million budget. In addition, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute listed it among the top 10 films of 2025. The film garnered several awards and nominations, including a record 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards and 13 at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, with Coogler winning the award for Best Original Screenplay at the latter. The film also earned record-breaking nominations and wins at the 57th NAACP Image Awards, scoring 18 nominations and 13 wins, including the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture. It also earned four wins at the 31st Critics' Choice Awards, two wins at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards (including Cinematic and Box Office Achievement), and two wins at the 32nd Actor Awards (including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture). This week we're in hygge mode, uncovering traumas in our generational home with the host of This Had Oscar Buzz, Joe Reid! One of the breakout Oscar films of the year is Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, a warm, realist Norwegian film about a difficult but brilliant director (Stellan Skarsgard), his two daughters (Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), and an American actress cast in the auteur's new film (Elle Fanning). All four performances earned Oscar nominations, along with nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. Sentimental Value also highlights a recurring phenomenon in Hollywood, wherein the Academy will pass over a director's breakout film but shower the follow-up with nominations. In Trier's case, his previous film The Worst Person in the World received nominations for Best International Film and Original Screenplay but, in our opinion, deserved many more. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jaws.Jaws is a thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the bestselling novel by Peter Benchley. Benchley co-wrote the screenplay with Carl Gottlieb. It opened in theaters on June 20, 1975.The movie follows a series of shark attacks on Amity Island. Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) insists the beach stays open because Amity Island depends on the tourism. Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) must kill the shark with help of oceanographer Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw).Touted as the original summer blockbuster, Jaws was the highest grossing film in history until the release of Star Wars. It was the first film to gross $100 million at the U.S. box office. While Jaws had a notably wide release and a large marketing campaign, most cinemas in the U.S. had only one screen at the time. The film won Oscars for John Williams' iconic score, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. Thelma Schoonmaker has, for over five decades, been Martin Scorsese's cutting room collaborator. Having edited his first feature film in 1967, she has worked on every Scorsese movie since Raging Bull, including Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, Wolf Of Wall Street, right up to his most recent features The Irishman and Killers Of The Flower Moon. As the widow of the legendary British filmmaker Michael Powell, she has also played a key role in the restoration of classic Powell and Pressburger films including The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus and A Matter Of Life And Death. Thelma Schoonmaker has won three Academy Awards, more than any other film editor. Thelma tells John Wilson how enrolling on a six week film making course as a young graduate in New York led to her meeting and helping Martin Scorsese edit a short film he was making. He then asked her to edit his 1967 feature film debut, Who's That Knocking at My Door and their partnership began in earnest. She recalls how she and Scorsese were part of the editing team on Michael Wadleigh's music festival documentary, Woodstock for which she received her first an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing - the first documentary ever to be nominated in that category. Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore Although the ALIEN: ROMULUS postproduction team of Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore came into this project with a wealth of knowledge and experience amongst them, they still learned a thing or two from director Fede Álvarez, including Fede's not-so-secret formula for jump scares, as well as the notion that clear dialogue isn't always as important as gripping action.  Plus, they reveal the hidden intent of Álvarez to split ALIEN and ALIENS into the two sides of the REMUS/ROMULUS space station. ALIEN: ROMULUS is the ninth installment in the Alien franchise, set between the events of ALIEN (1979) and ALIENS (1986). The film follows a group of downtrodden young space colonists in pursuit of better life conditions.  During the course of their escape from endless servitude on a mining colony, they encounter hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Sixth Sense. Joining them is their cousin, special guest Shawn Lebert. The Sixth Sense is a psychological thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It opened in theaters on August 6, 1999. In the film, child psychologist Malcom Crowe (Bruce Willis) attempts to help his patient Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), who sees ghosts. The somewhat true story of HIT MAN tells the tale of Gary Johnson, who is a professor of psychology and philosophy at the University of New Orleans, while also working undercover with the New Orleans Police Department to assist in undercover sting operations. When Jasper, a fellow cop who portrays fake hitmen to solicit murder-for-hire confessions and payments from “customers,” is suspended, Gary is unwillingly ushered into the role. Gary quickly finds himself to be a natural in garnering solicitations, going so far as to research suspects in advance and tailor a unique persona for each one.  Things take a big turn for Gary when he meets Madison, a beautiful woman who tries to contract "Ron" (Gary) to kill her abusive husband. Adapt Deez, a brand new season of GateCrashers, is dedicated to appreciating media adaptations in all their many forms! From the classic book-to-movie adaptations to the many iterations associated and in-between, episodes of Adapt Deez will focus on a specific property and its (officially licensed) adaptations. Not simply a recounting of the differences and similarities between each adaptation, Adapt Deez aims to highlight the ways in which each iteration shines and how its individual media-specific properties—such as film scores, casting, and packaging—elevate the material and affect the way each work is received.  In today's episode, Amanda, Amir, and Jon discuss the Academy Award-winning movie The Social Network. *) Ramadan's first night at Al Aqsa Mosque Muslims globally observed the Tarawih prayer on the first night of Ramadan, yet celebrations are overshadowed by sadness as Israel's brutal war on Palestinians in Gaza persists.  In occupied East Jerusalem, at Al Aqsa Mosque Compound, the world's third-holiest site for Muslims, there were fewer worshipers amid access restrictions imposed by the Israeli police. Some Palestinians prayed outside in the streets of the Old City, as Israel's war on besieged Gaza has killed at least 31,045 people, mostly children and women. *)  Sudan army general rules out Ramadan truce unless RSF leaves civilian sites Meanwhile, in Sudan, the government says there would be no truce in the holy month of Ramadan unless the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group leaves the homes and sites of civilians. The statement follows an appeal by the United Nations Security Council for a truce during Ramadan.  For its part, the paramilitary RSF said it welcomed the ceasefire call but senior Sudanese armed forces General Yasser al Atta called for the withdrawal of RSF first. The fighting between Sudan's army and the RSF erupted in mid-April 2023 amid tensions over a plan for transition to civilian rule.  *) Pakistan's Zardari sworn in for second term as president Pakistan's newly-elected President Asif Ali Zardari has taken the oath of office, becoming the first-ever civilian to serve a second term in the country's highest office. Zardari served as president from 2008 to 2013 under his own party's government. He took the oath of office during a ceremony at the Presidency in the capital Islamabad, attended by officials such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the three armed services chiefs. *) Portugal shifts right in election amidst populist surge Also in election news, Portugal's main centre-right party has narrowly defeated the incumbent Socialists but fell well short of a majority in a general election.  Near-complete official results have shown that the centre-right Democratic Alliance captured 29.49 percent of the vote, just ahead of the Socialists, with 28.66 percent. The result marks another advance for the populist far right in Europe, where they already govern in countries such as Italy, Hungary and Slovakia, or are steadily gaining, as in France and Germany. And finally… *) Oppenheimer dominates 96th Academy Awards, winning 7 Oscars Oppenheimer has blown up the 2024 Academy Awards in Hollywood, taking home seven Oscars, including the grand prize for Best Picture. The film's star, Cillian Murphy, won Best Actor and Robert Downey Jr. claimed the award for Best Supporting Actor.  Christopher Nolan won the Oscar for Best Director and the movie also took home the hardware for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Film Editing.

'The Holdovers,' directed by Alexander Payne, is the warmest and nicest movie. It has a runtime of 2 hours and 13 minutes and the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of the Best Picture nominees at 97. It is nominated for five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor - Paul Giamatti, Best Supporting Actress - Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

LAURENT SÉNÉCHAL After spending his entire school career in Africa (Congo, Chad, Benin), Laurent studied cinema at the University of Paris 8, where he met director Arthur Harari.  In addition to his Academy Award® for Best Film Editing nomination, he has been nominated for the BAFTA Award and the ACE Eddie for Best Editing, won the European Film Award for Best Editor, and won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Editing.  His other notable work includes Claire Burger's comedy-drama film Real Love, which won Best Film in the Venice Days section at the 75th Venice International Film Festival in 2019, and Berni Goldblat's drama film Wallay, which won the European Film Academy's Young Audience Award in 2018. "Air" had its world premiere at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it received solid reviews for its writing, ensemble cast, and Affleck's smooth direction, making the true story about the development of a sports shoe entertaining. The film has earned three Critics Choice Nominations for Best Ensemble, Editing for Academy Award William Goldenberg (who won an Oscar for editing Ben Affleck's Best Picture-winning "Argo"), and Original Screenplay for Alex Convery. "The Holdovers" had its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, where it received universal acclaim, with many claiming it to be Alexander Payne's best film since "Sideways." The film reunites him with that 2004 film's star Paul Giamatti in a role that has earned him Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor, while his co-star Da'Vine Joy Randolph has received the same nominations with both winning prizes from the National Board Of Review. The film also introduces the world to Dominic Sessa in his first film role, for which he's won a few breakout prizes this awards season and is nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. Giamatti and the film's editor, Kevin Tent, were kind enough to spend time talking with me while Joy Randolph and Sessa spoke with Daniel Howat. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who, while audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and James Hong in supporting roles. Kwan and Scheinert began work on the project in 2010. Production was announced in 2018, and principal photography ran from January to March 2020. The filmmakers initially sought Jackie Chan for the lead role before the script was revised to feature a female protagonist as part of a wife-husband duo. The works of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, as well as the children's book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and the video game Everything, served as inspiration for several scenes. The soundtrack features compositions by Son Lux, including collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, André 3000, John Hampson, and Randy Newman. The film explores philosophical themes such as existentialism, nihilism, surrealism, and absurdism, as well as themes such as neurodivergence, depr2ession, generational trauma, and Asian American identity. Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2022, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 25, 2022, before a wide release by A24 on April 8. The film grossed over $141 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film. It garnered widespread critical acclaim, gained a large cult following, and was a success at the 95th Academy Awards, winning a leading seven awards out of eleven nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress for Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Quan, Best Supporting Actress for Curtis, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Kwan and Scheinert, and Best Film Editing. It also won two Golden Globe Awards, five Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), a BAFTA Award, a record four SAG Awards (including Best Ensemble), a record seven Independent Spirit Awards (including Best Feature), and swept the four major guild awards (DGA, PGA, SAG, and WGA). With 266 awards out of 405 nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once is currently estimated to be the most awarded film of all time.

Editor - Tom Eagles ACE NEXT GOAL WINS editor Tom Eagles ACE first made a name for himself with his ACE Eddie-winning work on JOJO RABBIT (2019).  That film would also get Tom an Oscar® nomination for Best Film Editing.  With NEXT GOAL WINS, Eagles once again is found in the cutting room of a Taika Waititi film. Tom joined editors Nat Sanders ACE, Nick Monsour and Yana Gorskaya ACE for the "sports comedy with a heart". Based on the 2014 documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, NEXT GOAL WINS is about Dutch American coach, Thomas Rongen's efforts to lead the American Samoa national football team, considered one of the weakest football teams in the world, to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The storyline also includes fa'afafine player Jaiyah Saelua, who was the first transgender player ever to compete in a World Cup game.
