My guests for this episode introduce us to an updated version a type of organization which has been around since the earl 1900s, but which most of us have never heard of or know anything about. The type of organization is a Settlement House. The updated version is modeled in a Settlement House one of my guests founded and the other has helped strengthen and maintain. It is called The Good Neighbor House and is located in Waco, Texas. As my guests will discuss, in its updated version, a Settlement House offers local communities, towns, and cities a resource to strengthen the peaceful bonds of it residence; it offers our nation a resource to strengthen the practice of our democracy; and it offers Christian churches a resource for fulfilling a key mission and mandate of the Church's work--that of showing hospitality to the stranger. In considering the current challenges of both our nation and the churches in the U.S., Settlement Houses can provide a relevant and needed contribution, and are thus something worth knowing more about and considering. The founder of the Good Neighbor House, Dr. Laine Scales, has been on this show before. Laine is Professor and PhD Program Co-Director for the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work. She completed 15 years as Associate Dean in Baylor's Graduate School from 2004-2019. Her scholarly work led to her appointment as co-director of Baptist Scholars International Roundtable (BSIR). Laine is the author of All That Fits a Woman: Training Southern Baptist Women for Charity and Mission, 1907-1926 and co-author/co-editor of several works, including the 6th Edition of Christianity and Social Work: Readings in the Integration of Christian Faith and Social Work Practice, and Christian Faith and University Life: Stewards of the Academy. Her research interests include doctoral education, history of Baptist women in social work and missions, and rural social work. Laine's research on historical settlement houses led her to establish Good Neighbor Settlement House in Waco Texas, a social innovation experiment in nurturing community through an intergenerational experience of the arts, music, education, recreation, and worship. Tyler Mowry is a PhD candidate and in the Department of Religion and a Content Specialist on the Learning Design team at Baylor University. He has participated in a number of community development efforts, including K–12 educational advocacy in Bogotá, Colombia and West Chicago, IL, and urban agricultural development in East Atlanta, GA. Tyler is a member of the board of trustees and the maintenance team at the Good Neighbor House, and his family and church are frequent users of the space. You can learn more about Good Neighbor House in an article title, "Good Neighbor House: Reimagining Settlement Houses as a Response to Contemporary Community Challenges," in Chapter 3 of Christianity and Social Work: Readings on the Integration of Christian Faith and Social Work Practice, Fifth Ed., by T. Laine Scales and Michael S. Kelly. The intro and outro music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project.

It's time that we start to shift our mindset about Instagram. Now hear me out—what would it look like instead of constantly finding ways to gain new followers and growth, that we focus on the followers that we currently do have? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: About my job: "Content Specialist", published by Lizka on September 9, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I've been the Content Specialist on the Online Team at CEA since early 2022. People often don't know what "Content Specialist" means and it seems useful to have more "about my job" posts, so here's mine. This got long, so I encourage you to skip to whatever you want to see. I include my background, what I actually work on, and some quick reflections (what I value about the role, what's been hard, and the skills that I develop). My background & how I got here This ended up longer than expected, so tl;dr: math and comparative literature double major, helping to organize 3 summers of Canada/USA Mathcamp, getting into EA, research fellowship at Rethink Priorities, "Events Generalist" at CEA, and then being invited to apply to Aaron's job and ending up here. Non-tl;dr: I studied math and comparative literature in college (and graduated in 2021). I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do after college, and was somewhat defaulting to math academia or something education-related. I was spending my summers doing ~math research, working at Canada/USA Mathcamp (in a mostly non-academic role where we ran events, helped make camp run, and more - I think this made me better at making-things-happen and made me a lot more confident), and teaching math to excited kids. Meanwhile, a friend introduced me to EA, which clicked pretty quickly. The issue was that I didn't see myself contributing; I didn't want to do CS, didn't particularly want to study economics, didn't think I would last long earning-to-give, and didn't think I had other real skills. But I read a bunch, listened to the 80K Podcast, went to the 2020 Student Summit, and had a call with 80,000 Hours, where they told me to apply to Rethink Priorities (and defer graduate school). I followed that advice. I wrote about my experience at RP here. This experience was great. It made me feel that fairly generalist research was actually a viable/useful path. It also got me over my Forum-intimidation and got me to post my first Forum post (and some others). While I was at Rethink Priorities, I had applied to an "Events Generalist" role at CEA - largely because it seemed relatively interesting, CEA had "effective altruism" in its name (so I thought it was going to be at least somewhat useful), I wanted to test out something like ops, and I really wanted to have a job. I got and took the job, which I was expecting to be pretty low-responsibility since I was so junior. I got more responsibility than I expected, which was both scary and very motivating. On my second week, I ended up being one of two(?) people from the Events Team at the Coordination Forum (I was there to help make it go smoothly and to take notes in some sessions), during which we also made the decision to double the size of EA Global London 2021 (happening in around a month). It felt like a lot of the work that I was doing just wouldn't get done if I wasn't there (or maybe something else important wouldn't get done). After EA Global: London 2021, things calmed down a bit. I was still writing sometimes, and I sometimes contributed a bit to side-projects, some of which grew out a bit. Then Aaron reached out to say that he was leaving, and he was wondering if it would be ok to send me the job application. Skimming Aaron's messages from the time, it looks like Aaron reached out because of a combination of my Forum writing, my performance on the Events Team, and encouragement from Linch when Aaron checked with him. I checked with my then-manager Amy to see if she would be ok with me applying. I was very stressed about this, but Amy was very supportive. I went into the application pretty confident that I wouldn't get far (and I cried after the interview). That's the role...

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Since its 1999 theatrical premiere The Best Man franchise has been a beloved staple within our community. It was the talk of the town once again when the sequel, The Best Man Holiday, debuted in 2013. And now, 24 years later, under the direction of Malcolm D. Lee and featuring the original acclaimed cast aka the “Justice League of Black Hollywood.” The Best Man Final Chapters has once again ignited our conversations on what it means to be in community with friends and family. The kind of interpersonal relationships that know you well enough to tell you about yourself and hold space for you when you've lost who you are. To discuss The Best Man: Final Chapters in-depth, this week, I'm in conversation with 2 more incredible members of the team, Content Director, Kamron Taylor and Content Specialist, Gorgeous West. In our conversation we explore, how the limited series met and missed our expectations, which character dynamics we were most enthralled by and disappointed in, and how we feel knowing that these are our final moments with Quentin, Shelby, Harper, Robyn, Murch, Candace, Lance, and Jordan. She's North America's ambassador for #fairkitchens and a Content Specialist at Unilever Food Solutions. She joins this week's show to share details about the initiative. Research showed that this industry isn't thriving and will fail if it continues, and change will create a healthier culture that, in turn, makes for a more beneficial business. The mission is to value people, companies, and communities to create a healthy, positive kitchen culture where no meal comes at a cost to someone's wellbeing. The message opens up conversations about unsustainable working conditions; it recognizes these issues and then works toward solutions.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing a contest: EA Criticism and Red Teaming, published by Lizka on June 1, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction tl;dr: We're running a writing contest for critically engaging with theory or work in effective altruism (EA). Submissions can be in a range of formats (from fact-checking to philosophical critiques or major project evaluations); and can focus on a range of subject matters (from assessing empirical or normative claims to evaluating organizations and practices). We plan on distributing $100,000, and we may end up awarding more than this amount if we get many excellent submissions. The deadline is September 1, 2022. You can find the submission instructions below. Neither formal nor significant affiliation with effective altruism is required to enter into the contest. We are: Lizka Vaintrob (the Content Specialist at the Centre for Effective Altruism), Fin Moorhouse (researcher at the Future of Humanity Institute), and Joshua Teperowski Monrad (biosecurity program associate at Effective Giving). The contest is funded via the FTX Future Fund Regranting Program, with organizational support from the Centre for Effective Altruism. We ‘pre-announced' this contest in March. The rest of this post gives more details, outlines the kinds of critical work we think are especially valuable, and explains our rationale. We're also sharing a companion resource for criticisms and red teams. How to apply Submit by posting on the EA Forum and tagging the post with the contest's tag, or by filling out this form. If you post on the Forum, you don't need to do anything except tag your post with the “Criticism and Red Teaming Contest” topic, and we'll consider your post for the contest. If you'd prefer to post your writing outside the Forum, you can submit it via this form — we'd still encourage you to cross-post it to the Forum (although please be mindful of copyright issues). We also encourage you to refer other people's work to the contest if you think more people should know about it. To refer someone else's work, please submit it via this form. If it wins, we may reward you for this — please see an explanation below. The deadline is September 1, 2022. Please contact us with any questions. You can also comment here. Prizes We have $100,000 currently set aside for prizes, which we plan on fully distributing. Prizes will fall under three main tiers: Winners: $20,000 Runners up: $5,000 each Honourable mentions: $1,000 each In addition, we may award a prize of $100,000 for outstanding work that looks likely to cause a very significant course adjustment in effective altruism. Therefore, we're prepared to award (perhaps significantly) more than $100,000 if we're impressed by the quality and volume of submissions. We're also offering a bounty for referring winning submissions: if you refer a winning submission (if you're the first person to refer it, and the author never entered the contest themselves), you'll get a referral bounty of 5% of the award. We will also consider helping you find proactive funding for your work if you require the security of guaranteed financial support to enable a large project (though we may deduct proactive funding from prize money if you are awarded one). See the FAQ for more details. Submissions must be posted or submitted no later than 11:59 pm BST on September 1st, and we'll announce winners by the end of September. Criteria Overall, we want to reward critical work according to a question like: “to what extent did this cause me to change my mind about something important?” — where “change my mind” can mean “change my best guess about whether some claim is true”, or just “become significantly more or less confident in this important thing.” Below are some virtues of the kind of work we expect to be most valuable. We'll look out for ...
