In the Apostle Paul's 1st Biblical letter to Timothy, Paul writes that Christ came into the world to save sinners. He follows that up by stating that he is the foremost sinner. This is sometimes translated as Paul being “chief of sinners” and even as him being, plainly, “the worst.”It's this idea that Christian actor, writer, and podcaster Nathan Clarkson uses to justify the title of his new book: “I'm The Worst.”Nathan's work goes against the cultural current. In an age where many loud voices urge us to put away thoughts of self-criticism and turn instead toward radical self-acceptance, Nathan argues that to truly value ourselves is to understand where we have failed and where we need to grow.Furthermore, Nathan encourages his readers to spend less time bemoaning the people who are making the world worse and more time actively working on what we can do to make the world better.Nathan has acted in The Purge, Silicon Valley, FBI: Most Wanted, Past Lives, and many other movies and TV shows. In addition to acting Nathan has produced multiple feature films through his production company, Clarkson's Creations. He is also a Publishers Weekly Bestselling Author for his book Finding God in Hollywood, among others.Religion Unplugged's Culture Critic, Joseph Holmes regularly co hosts a podcast with Nathan called The Overthinkers, so this week, the pair sat down on our podcast, to discuss Nathan's personal cycles of failure and self-improvement, the ways we villainize the people who differ from us, and how a self-critical mindset can still coincide with self-love.

She lost her father to MS, then her mother to breast cancer, and just months later began experiencing the first signs of the same disease that took her dad. What followed wasn't a miracle cure—it was years of grief, fear, and learning how to live when life doesn't go back to normal. Today, Ellen is a Certified Hypnotherapist, mindset strategist, and advanced student of Dr. Joe Dispenza, and the creator of Rehab for Overthinkers—a transformational workshop for women living with chronic illness who are stuck in fear, mental overload, and “what if” thinking. In this episode, I sit down with Nathan Clarkson, author of I'm the Worst, for an honest conversation about brokenness, shame, confession, and freedom. Nathan shares what it was like growing up in a well-known Christian family, learning how to perform moral goodness while hiding the parts of himself he didn't know how to face, and how confronting that reality became the beginning of healing rather than the end of the story. We talk about moral superiority, cancel culture, and the ways fear turns both politics and church life into tribes instead of communities. We also dig into the difference between shame and conviction, why confession and forgiveness matter so much for spiritual formation, and how dehumanization always leads to harm. This conversation is for anyone who is tired of polarized Christianity and is looking for a more honest, freeing, and love-shaped way forward.Nathan Clarkson is the author of I'm the Worst, and an award-winning actor, a Netflix-trending filmmaker, and best-selling author of several books, including Different and Uniquely You. He is a podcast philosopher on the award-winning show The Overthinkers. Nathan writes regularly on the intersection of faith and culture for the Patheos column Cross Cultural and has been featured in outlets such as the Today Show, LA Times, Variety, and Relevant Magazine. Gratitude journals. Green juices. Meditation apps. We've been taught happiness is a checklist, but what if that's only half the story? In this episode, we dive into the world of Positive Psychology and the concept of flourishing– living deeply, not just lightly. We explore the PERMA‑H model (Positive Emotion • Engagement • Relationships • Meaning • Accomplishment • Health) and what it really means to feel alive even when life isn't easy. If you've done all the “right” self‑care things and still feel off… you're not failing. You're human. And this episode is your gentle invitation to stop chasing happiness and start tending what matters. What You'll Discover:Why happiness as a finish line keeps us stuckHow the PERMA‑H model gives us a fuller picture of wellbeingHow cultural expectations twist engagement, achievement, health & moreA simple journaling exercise to map where you're full and where you need spaceWhy flourishing is rhythmic – not balanced or perfect “Flourishing is the whole spectrum – light and dark, joy and grief, purpose and pause.
