In this episode, New York Times bestselling authors Nelson DeMille and Alex DeMille prove that brilliance runs in the BLOOD LINES… We discuss their latest collaboration, an intricately constructed thriller that kept us guessing till the final page. BLOOD LINES features the return of Army CID Special Agents Brodie and Taylor who are on the hunt for the cold-blooded murderer of one of their fellow agents. Army Criminal Investigation Agents Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor have been separated for five months following their last assignment, a dangerous mission in Venezuela to locate and detain an infamous Army deserter. Now, in Berlin, they are reunited and tasked with investigating the murder of one of their own: CID Special Agent Harry Vance of the 5th MP Battalion, an accomplished counterterrorism agent who had been stationed in western Germany, and whose body was discovered in a city park in the heart of Berlin's Arab refugee community. The authorities suspect this is an act of Islamic terrorism, but Brodie and Taylor soon believe there is more to this case. The reason for Vance's presence in Berlin is unknown, and as Brodie and Taylor work to discover what the murder victim was doing in the days and weeks preceding his death, they become immersed in the many conflicts and contradictions of modern Germany—the Arab refugee crisis, the dark legacy of the Cold War and the Stasi secret police, and the imminent threats of a rising neo-Nazi movement. At the same time, they are butting heads with the authorities—both German and American—and facing a possible threat from American intelligence agents who fear that Brodie and Taylor might have learned too much about US clandestine operations during their mission in Venezuela. Ultimately, Brodie and Taylor realize that the murder of Harry Vance was merely the prelude to a much more sinister future event—unless they can unravel the mystery in time to stop it. Nelson DeMille is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty-two novels, seven of which were #1 New York Times bestsellers. His novels include The Maze, The Deserter (written with Alex DeMille), The Cuban Affair, Word of Honor, Plum Island, The Charm School, The Gold Coast, and The General's Daughter, which was made into a major motion picture, starring John Travolta and Madeleine Stowe. She helps interpret American and Chinese diplomatic engagements over the Russo-Ukrainian War and assesses the prospects for China actually playing a role in negotiating an end to the conflict.3:42 – What diplomacy is really all about, and why it's so conspicuously absent7:32 – Does it make sense for the U.S. to expect Beijing to outright condemn the invasion?10:40 – What should the U.S. actually expect from China?13:55 – Is China willing and able to play a meaningful role as a mediator?17:06 – What's up with the leaks?21:32 – Reading the readouts28:20 – What is China's optimal endgame here?32:06 – China's "southern strategy"34:50 – Do upcoming U.S. midterm and presidential elections matter to Beijing?41:29 – What are we missing when we talk about China's perspectives on the war?A full transcript of this interview is available on SupChina.comRecommendations:Susan: Butter Lamp, a short film directed by Hu Wei, nominated for Best Live Action Short at the 87th Academy AwardsKaiser: Birria Tacos. On Episode 6 of Road to The Oscars join David Long and special guest Craig Fields as they go head to head in a battle for the ages! The speculation is over, the precursors have happened and its time for the lads to lay their cards on the table and boy do they. David battles with heart vs head as Craig dives into the deep end with some outrageous and daring predictions. Who will win? All will be revealed come Oscars Sunday. The show begins with David and Craig predicting the 8 categories which won't be shown live as well as Craig paying homage to people and films he think deserved a nomination this year; none more so than Nic Cage. Once the pleasantries are over the battle begins. The First eight categories discussed are Best Original Score, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Documentary Short, Best Animated Short Film and Best Live Action Short. Both David and Craig state clearly that they believe that all 23 categories should be shown live and this is disrespectful to many of the creatives involved in the film making process. Do they agree on who will win? Absolutely not! After this history making Flee is discussed in the Best Documentary feature. Nominated in three categories; is this the one it can win? Craig and David debate. Then its onto the screenplay categories which look wide open and cause David a real headache! In Best Adapted Screenplay looks like a match race between CODA and The Power Of The Dog and this category will surely have a major impact on the Best Picture race. The Same can be said for Original Screenplay; can Belfast beat Licorice Pizza? Or will Don't look up spoil the party? Both David and Craig then pay respects to The Tragedy Of Macbeth in Best Cinematography but who do they think will win? The lads then discuss Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Visual Effects and Best International Feature. All of these categories have strong betting favourites but will Craig play it safe? Of course not! Craig makes some outlandish predictions in 2 of these categories. It's then onto Best Original Song, a category that should be locked up but looks strangely open. David and Craig select different songs, but who will be right come Oscars Sunday?David sings the praises of The Mitchells Vs The Machines but will he stand by it or chose the betting favourite Encanto? It's then onto one of the hardest and most open categories of the night; Best Actress. Arguably any of the five nominees could win, but who do David and Craig pick? David struggles to decide. The show then moves onto Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor And Best Supporting Actor which looks much simpler to predict but this is the Oscars, you just never know. The Show concludes with the big one… Best Picture! Will it be The Power Of The Dog or will it be CODA? Or could Belfast cause a massive shock and take home the big prize? David and Craig make their predictions and it may not be what you expect.
Recommender systems have become omnipresent in our everyday lives exemplified by Netflix telling us what movies to watch, to Amazon suggesting which books we should read, to Instacart promoting specific brands we must buy. We are constantly being influenced and seduced by these algorithms and the humans who designed them. On this month's HDSR podcast we examine the pros and cons of recommender systems as well as the art, passion, and creativity that can be lost when we rely too heavily on them. Our expert guests are Dr. Pearl Pu, the leading data scientist on recommender systems and a senior scientist at the Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, and film-maker Brandt Andersen whose most recent film, Refugee about a Syrian doctor's escape from her war torn country, was short-listed for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short in 2020.
Matt and Marisa return to discuss the remaining shorts categories thanks, as always, to ShortsTV. In the episode, they bemoan how simplistic many of the live action nominees are, wish that some of the documentary shorts dug a little deeper and pray Lead Me Home doesn't pull a win.
Adam discusses the nominees for Best Live Action Short Film.Support the show by filling out a brief survey about future content: bit.ly/bostmrsurv
Join David and not one but two special guests; Mike 1 and also Mike from the ‘Mike, Mike And Oscar Podcast' as they break down all the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards. Every category is discussed and the nomination tallies are analysed. The Best Picture race still looks like a three headed monster but The Power Of The Dog leads the way with 12 nominations, with West Side Story and Belfast sitting behind with a tied seven nominations each. Denis Villeneuve was a shock snub in the directing category but his epic Dune showed a strong hand with a total of ten nominations. Perhaps one of the biggest shocks of nominations morning came in the Best Actress category as Lady Gaga was snubbed but Kristen Stewart made it in for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer. David and the two Mikes asses how and why this may have happened, was it snub power? Or did the Academy just hate House Of Gucci. Denzel Washington made the Oscars five after yet another snubbing from BAFTA; why did this happen? Both David and the two mikes have thoughts. The Supporting categories were also full of drama with Dame Judi Dench picking up a nomination for her supporting role in Sir Kenneth Branghs film Belfast. No Caitriona Balfe or Ruth Negga though. The Supporting Actor categories are also fascinating with Jesse Plemmons getting his first Oscar nomination. What does this mean for Kodi-Smitt McPhee? Cannibalisation? David and the two mikes Discuss. Unanimous praise for Troy Kotsur who becomes only the second deaf actor to be nominated for an Oscar after trail blazing Marlee Matlin. Both Star in Best Picture Nominated CODA. Both Adapted and Original Screenplay categories get the Road To The Oscars deep dive. The worst Person in the world was a shock nomination here but Being the Ricardos Missed Original Screenplay although it had the Writers Guild Of America Nomination. As well as the major categories this show dives deep into the undercard and what it could mean for the Best Picture race. Is Dune just an undercard player? Or does it have Best Picture capability. Best International and Best Documentary feature are discussed, with Flee being nominated in both. No Time To Die heads up the field in Best Original song and Hans Zimmer goes head to head with Jonny Greenwood in Best Original Score. The Tragedy Of Macbeth lands a Cinematography nomination, in a fine year for this category.Spiderman: No Way Home lands a Best Visual Effects nomination, but can spidey swing to victory? Cruella looks the front runner in Best Costume Design but can Dune or West Side Story cause a surprise? both receive nominations. Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Make Up and Hairstyling are all discussed before the panel rounds off the show by listing and briefly discussing the nominees in Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and Best Documentary Short.

Daryle Lamont Jenkins on Documenting Hate in Charlottesville and Beyond Daryle Lamont Jenkins believes "the pen is mightier than the sword" and has been writing about, filming, and otherwise getting the word out about neo-Nazi and other hate organizations for decades. He has appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show and AM Joy with Joy Reid, ABC's 20/20, and in countless articles and documentaries (Alt-Right: Age of Rage, Erasing Hate) focusing on antifa's fight against the so-called “alt-right." Daryle co-produced the short film, Skin, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. He first joined a counterprotest against a KKK rally in New Hope, PA in the early nineties and founded the anti-hate organization One People's Project in New Brunswick, NJ in 2000. In this conversation with Robin Renée, he talks about early experiences that inspired his work, an on-the-ground account of documenting and protesting the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, and what you can do to help the anti-fascist movement. Co-hosts Wendy Sheridan, Robin Renée, and Mary McGinley begin the show with 3 Random Facts and the News, though the facts are more timely than random. Learn about how the results of the U.S. census information is used, National Ferret Day (April 2nd), and a theory of the origin of April Fool's Day. In the news, people are using 3-D printers to make respirator valves and other much-needed medical equipment to deal with the novel coronavirus pandemic. There is also a lot or misinformation and disinformation out there, so listen to the COVIDiocy PSA and take heed. Later in The Blanket Fort, Wendy, Robin, and Mary check in about how they're coping with social distancing and personal connections facilitated by Zoom. Host Paul Booth interviews Director Bryan Buckley for SARIA. It is a 2020 Oscar-Nominee for Best Short Film (Live Action). This eye-opening, stunning and tear-jerker of a movie is: Based on true events, SARIA follows two inseparable orphaned sisters, Saria and Ximena, who fight against the daily abuse and unimaginable hardship at the Virgen de La Asuncion Safe Home in Guatemala when a tragic fire claims the lives of 41 orphaned girls. The film is an urgent call to action for the women who lost their lives, and those who survived the fire. The real life survivors, who are seeking justice for the negligence that lead to the death of the 41 girls, are currently in the middle of a legal battle with the Guatemalan Government. Rather than using traditional child actors to play the roles of the orphans, Buckley opted to reach out to orphanages throughout Mexico to participate in the film. Ultimately selecting Ministerios De Amor Orphanage in Mexico City to work with in partnership. Buckley felt that these children, if given an opportunity, could shine. Both lead actresses, Estefania Tellez (Saria) and Gabriela Ramirez (Ximena) worked together to get their parts in the film.
You may remember Luke Matheny from the 2011 Academy Awards, when he won for Best Live Action Short and said: "Uh, I should've gotten a haircut." Since then, Luke's gone on to direct ten episodes of Marc Maron's Maron and to be the showrunner of Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street. Today's session is a surprisingly emotional one: we cover the night of the Oscars, why he thinks cheesesteaks are the most delicious of all meals, his relationship to authority, rushing his son to the emergency room after giving him peanut butter. We also talk about why you need rules before you can improvise (in both burgers and filmmaking), his love of pancakes as a kid, why he smiles big when he talks about sweet food, his grandmother's Pennsylvania Dutch Pot Pie, and learning that the person who he thought was his grandfather wasn't really his grandfather. Linda Christina Riedmann was all smiles for her DIF interview This podcast represents the second DIF interview for The Wind Phone, a beautiful short film that pulled in 6 awards at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2019. Linda Christina Riedmann produced this amazing film and I have to say that she and writer/director Kristen Gerweck represent one of the healthiest, most productive filmmaking partnerships I've seen on the festival circuit. You cannot watch The Wind Phone online yet. It came this close to making the shortlist for the Oscar for Best Live Action Short. Yes, this film is that good. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when I didn't make the list. I know the Oscar process is more about publicity than quality, but there's a little spot in my heart and my head that hopes for the day quality triumphs. Instead of complaining all day, I will just let you know that whenever Linda & Kristen decide to release The Wind Phone online, I will be sure to include a link here for you to see it. Then you can be as angry as I am about the Oscar snub. There's no major spoilers in this interview. Just the fascinating story how a talented, hard-working young woman from Austria ended up in Los Angeles producing Oscar worthy short films. Yep. Enjoy hearing from Linda! It's just by happenstance that we ran into three short films this week that are both remarkable and newly available online. One of them is really something, and because of that, you have to figure, it won this year's Oscar for Best Live Action Short. One of them is merely clever and well done. And the last is an animated short that will utterly defy your expectations of an animated short. And the best part is: You can watch all three of them in just 27 minutes.Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
