Happy Tuesday! We've got a great episode for you this week. If you are a fan of Star Trek or Walking Dead, then you know Sonequa Martin-Green. In addition to playing Sasha Williams and Commander Michael Burnham on Discovery, Sonequa is currently starring alongside Natalie Morales in the moving new film My Dead Friend Zoe. I have been a fan of Sonequa's work for a long time and I absolutely loved her performance in the new movie. We covered a lot of ground in our conversation from how to build a “show family,” to the role faith plays in her life as an actor, to the inspiring work she and My Dead Friend Zoe director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes are doing to start a dialogue about mental health among veterans. Stick around after the interview for the Hindsight, where my producer Jeph and I celebrate my BIRTHDAY and answer Fan Questions from the Mail Sack! Tread Perilously takes its annual look at Star Trek: Discovery with the Season 2 episode "New Eden." When a Red Angel signal sends the U.S.S Discovery to a planet in the Beta Quadrant, they discover a colony of humans resettled there in the midst of World War III. How they got half across the galaxy will lead Captain Christopher Pike, Commander Michael Burnham, and Lieutenant Joann Owosekun into a conflict of faith and science. Meanwhile, Commander Saru, Ensign Tilly and the rest of the Discovery crew must stop one of the planets outer rings from raining radioactive dust on the planet and the away team. Justin distracts Erik by pointing out his love for Captain Christopher Pike. But he gets distracted himself by a guest actor who offers a Mass Effect Andromeda style performance. The behind-the-scenes staff changes become more apparent as Erik notes the Red Angel is clearly different from what it ultimately became. Justin admits he found the season-long plot less engaging. Thoughts inevitably turn to Star Wars. The Beta Quadrant gets examined as a poorly thoughtout element of Star Trek's universe. Erik realizes Taoism would've solved everything and praises the competent Discovery crew under Saru's command. Also, Justin reminds Erik of A Song of Ice and Fire's Lord Manderly and both celebrate the wealth of various Sci-Fi properties in various formats.

After what felt like an eternity of speculation, Discovery is here at last! But was the splashy premiere worthy of fandom's intense anticipation? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton breathlessly break down the fledgling series' first two episodes and debate this Trek's very modern approach to characters, world-building, aesthetics and energy. Do its revamped sensibilities work, or do they awkwardly butt heads with the incarnations that came before? The duo also tackle new protagonist Commander Michael Burnham, and consider how she currently fits into our established understanding of Starfleet first officers and where she ranks against the formidable icons of yesteryear. Plus, as if this podcast episode couldn't get any more thrilling, the good ship Ortonville beams in his thoughts on episode three of The Orville, About a Girl. Right-click to download.Read more »
Discovery Debrief returns with its panel — Chris Clow (Movies.com, Comics on Consoles, GeekPulse Radio), Rachael Clow (Biology PhD candidate), Zaki Hasan (Zaki's Corner, MovieFilm Podcast), and Cicero Holmes (Spawn On Me Cast) — to talk the latest news surrounding the current iteration of the Star Trek franchise, and then dive in deep to the events of the series' third episode: "Context is for Kings." With former Commander Michael Burnham finding herself on a brand new starship — albeit with some decidedly familiar faces — she's thrust into a mysterious plot that places her inside an adrift haunted house in space that has more in common with the likes of the original two Alien films and John Carpenter's The Thing than it does anything else in the Trek franchise. The panel also discusses the enigma that is Discovery's commanding officer, Gabriel Lorca, the positioning of longer-term characters, and some speculation surrounding a clandestine intelligence organization we've seen before in the Star Trek universe.
