The Edge, Trek.fm’s dedicated Star Trek: Discovery podcast, follows the story of Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery as they chart new territory in the 32nd century, and also explores the creative and cultural history of the legendary franchise by deep diving into the connection between Discovery and TV series, films, books, and comics that came before.
Far from Home. Michael Burnham's arrival in the year 3188 gave us our first glimpse of the far future and revealed hints about the cataclysmic event known as the Burn, as well as the seeming demise of the United Federation of Planets as a galactic power. But what about the crew of the USS Discovery? “That Hope Is You, Part 1” left them in the shadows. But while the first episode of Season 3 was all Michael, the second is all everyone else. In this episode of The Edge, host C Bryan Jones shares thoughts on the arrival of the USS Discovery—one year after Michael. Among the points covered are Saru's leadership, how the back and forth between him and Georgiou reflects real-world debate over approaches to diplomacy and one another, and what her comments could mean for the Section 31 series. We also delight in the inclusion of the bridge crew, Jett Reno's wit, and the reveal of the long-sought connection between the Short Treks episode “Calypso” and Star Trek: Discovery. And, in the Notes segment, we dig deep into Star Trek's past to uncover connections to rubindium, transtators, and Coridan. That Hope Is You, Part 1. When we last saw the crew of the USS Discovery, they were on their way to the 32nd century. It's taken longer than expected to make it through that wormhole, thanks to a little 21st -century problem of our own, but the third season of Star Trek: Discovery has finally arrived. And with it have come some answers as well as a slew of new questions. We now know what the Burn is—at least the basics—and have gotten our first glimpse of a diminished United Federation of Planets. In this episode of The Edge, host C Bryan Jones shares thoughts on Michael Burnham's arrival in the year 3188, speculates on the deeper implications of the Burn, revels in the beauty of Iceland and the incredible cinematography, and looks at some of the social commentary found in “That Hope Is You, Part1.” We also open flip through the pages of our notebook to explore the franchise-spanning use of propulsion technologies and the possible temporal connections between Discovery and Enterprise. Discovery and the Mirror Universe. Star Trek first took us to the Mirror Universe during the second season of The Original Series. It would take 27 years for another crossover—in the aptly named second-season episode of Deep Space Nine—and the show would bring us three more outings. Enterprise continued the theme with the two-part “In a Mirror, Darkly” before Discovery made the the Terran Empire a key part of its first season. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart and Brandi Jackola discuss the USS Discovery's trip to the Mirror Universe, a trip made possible by Mirror Lorca and his mushroom train. Tilly. Ensign Sylvia Tilly is a special character, like few we have seen in Star Trek before. She is human, but there are many aspects of her humanity that have not often been part of the officers seen in past series. It's a testament to the writers and creators of the show that they could so successfully introduce such a wonderfully crafted young engineer. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart and Brandi Jackola, who identifies most with Tilly of all characters in the franchise, discuss all things Ensign Sylvia Tilly and share some exciting and sad news. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's the show that everybody has been asked for since Anson Mount took the screen as Captain Christopher Pike in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. At last, the powers that be have heard the collective cries of fandom and announced the return of Mount as Pike along with Ethan Peck as Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One in a spin-off series entitled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson discuss their hopes and dreams for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, what they would like to see from Pike, Spock, and Number One, plus some other characters that could pop up in the series. Discovery Season 1 Special Features. Creating a new show is never easy. Creating a science fiction show and a brand-new universe would be daunting. And doing so within the framework of Star Trek universe would be utterly terrifying. Yet all the departments working on Star Trek: Discovery, from make-up to set design, did a fabulous job of crafting a new take on a familiar world from the ground up. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson discuss the three hours of special features from the Season 1 Blu-ray set that honor the work of these creatives. Disco Klingons. Honor! Glory! Death in battle! Klingons have been a part of Star Trek since the beginning. The Original Series saw smooth-headed Klingons, the movies introduced forehead ridges, and we learned more about their culture during the franchise's so-called golden years of the 1990s. More than two decades later, Star Trek: Discovery once again changed—or reimagined—the look of one of the show's staple aliens species. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson go full Klingon as they talk about the reimagined look of the species first brought to like through Koloth, Kor, and Kang, including the women of the Empire and Klingon culture. Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. The majority of Star Trek—from The Original Series through to Enterprise—has followed an episode-of-the-week format. Sure, Deep Space Nine had its overall Dominion arc and Enterprise tackled the Xindi in its third season, but it took until Discovery for Star Trek to hit a fully serialized format. “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” Discovery's seventh episode, is the only standalone installment so far in Discovery's two-season run. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson chat about “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” Harry Mudd, and bring up some “news” about Season 3. Discovery: The Missing Story, Part I. Star Trek: Discovery followed two main storylines in its first season: the Klingon War and Lorca's journey back to the Mirror Universe. When the NCC-1031 paid its visit to the Terran Empire, the Klingon War in the Prime Universe continued without them. Months passed before Discovery returned home, and when it did we saw that the Klingons had almost decimated the Federation. But how? In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson begin writing the missing story of what happened while the USS Discovery was away in the Mirror Universe—beginning with a new ship and crew. Background Bridge Crew. Every incarnation of Star Trek portrays the bridge crew and senior staff as a cohesive unit. One could say they are a family. We also get to learn a great deal about not only the captain and first officer, but also those who sit at the conn, communications, ops, and security stations. Star Trek: Discovery, however, is different. Famed for being the first Star Trek series whose main character is not the captain, it doesn't really develop the bridge crew as other series have done. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson explore some of the background crew on the bridge of the USS Discovery. We discuss Joann Owosekun, Keyla Detmer, R.A. Bryce, and Gen Rhys, as well as touch on a couple of other characters who appear on the bridge of the NCC-1031. Unanswered Threads. When a television show creates large, elaborate storylines that are weaved throughout a season, some of the smaller plot points that were developed may never get finalized. What on Kaminar is happening now with the Kelpiens and Ba'ul? The logic extremists came and went pretty quickly, and what's going to happen with L'Rell's chancellorship? In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson discuss some unanswered questions and speculate on the logic extremists, briefly discuss the lost potential of Airiam, and explore what's happening on Qo'noS and Kaminar now that the USS Discovery has left the 23rd century. Ships of Discovery, Part 3. Not only did Star Trek: Discovery introduce a whole range of new Federation vessels, it also brought us fresh designs for some much-loved ones from beyond Starfleet. The Klingons have been part of Star Trek since the beginning, and were a major adversary in Season 1 of Discovery, with their fearsome vessels destroying many Starfleet assets. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson conclude their three-part discussion on the Ships of Discovery by talking about non-Starfleet designs. We discuss Klingon vessels—including the Bird-of-Prey and D7—as well as ships belonging to the Ba'ul and Section 31. Ships of Discovery, Part 2. Not all ships are hero ships, such as the USS Discovery and the USS Enterprise. Starfleet still needs the smaller, lesser-known vessels to perform vital functions throughout—and at the edge of—Federation space. Medical, transport, and science ships all have specific day-to-day functions. But when it comes down to it, all starships are able to fight for the Federation's values when necessary. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson continue their discussion on the Ships of Discovery, focusing on the lesser-known ships seen throughout the series. These include the USS Shran, USS Hiawatha, USS Buran, and USS Cabot. Ships of Discovery, Part 1. Some starships look like cruise ships. Others look like warehouses with nacelles. Either way, Star Trek would not be the same without the myriad vessels shown over the past 50-plus years. Star Trek: Discovery has given us great new designs and updated one of the franchise's most iconic ones: the USS Enterprise NCC-1701. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson discuss the hero ships of Star Trek: Discovery, including the Constitution (USS Enterprise), Crossfield (USS Discovery and USS Glenn), Nimitz (USS Europa), and Walker (USS Shenzhou) classes. Animated Short Treks. It's been more than 45 years since the airing of “The Counter-Clock Incident,” the final episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series. All Star Trek since has been live action—until now! “The Girl Who Made the Stars” and “Ephraim and Dot” represent a new chapter in Star Trek's second golden age. With the franchise venturing into adult animation with Star Trek: Lower Decks, these animated Short Treks offer something for the younger audience. Star Trek: Discovery: A New Host Review. With two full seasons under its belt—and a third to be released later this year—Star Trek: Discovery has given us some great new Star Trek stories and allowed older ones to grow. Through the Klingon War, Section 31, and the Mirror Universe, Discovery expanded upon the culture of the Klingons and the goings on of the Terran Empire while also giving us a new way to fly! Now, some time-traveling shenanigans have set up what could be a dramatic Season 3. In this episode of The Edge, new hosts Liam Smart, Brandi Jackola, and Nick Collinson discuss what they thought of Seasons 1 and 2, the reimagined Klingons, hopes for Season 3, and more. Goodbye and Hello. Each season of Star Trek: Discovery has brought us a different captain: Lorca in the first and Pike in the second. Who will take the center seat in the third? And just as each season of the series has told a fascinating story before the crew moves on to something new, so it is with this podcast. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Liam Smart, Nicholas Paul Collinson, and Brandi Jackola for a changing of the guard as they say their goodbyes and welcome the new crew. Liam, Nick, and Brandi introduce themselves and share their Star Trek stories. Ask Not. Starfleet has a tradition of testing its members: Kirk and the Kobayashi Maru, Wesley Crusher and the psych scenario, Deanna Troi and her command test are examples. These trials are designed to judge character, loyalty, and the ability to make decisions. When serving aboard Captain Pike's Enterprise, the drill is no different. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the latest episode of Short Treks, “Ask Not.” We delve into the many types of coercion used by Pike is his attempt to get Cadet Thira Sidhu to break her orders and go rogue. We question if this was too harsh compared with previous tests we've seen in Star Trek and recognize that even Pike believes it was extreme and inhumane. Q&A and The Trouble with Edward. The first two Short Treks of Season Two offer a glimpse into what we all hope will be a new Captain Pike series. In “Q&A,” we see Ensign Spock's transfer to the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and the first meeting of the legendary science officer and Number One. In “The Trouble with Edward,” we meet a newly promoted captain trying to contain Tribbles in a very comical way. Although not a direct tie-in to Discovery, these short stories add richness to what we know about the 23rd century. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss “Q&A” and “The Trouble with Edward.” What worked for us and made us laugh out loud? How do these Short Treks relate to Season Two of Discovery? We compare and contrast these stories with those of last season's Short Treks to discover the general direction of the Star Trek universe. Time Crystals. Star Trek has long used time travel as an element of storytelling, usually to get our characters to another place in time. While the methods may seem farfetched—slingshot around the sun, jumping through a gateway—they somehow have always felt appropriate for Star Trek's scientific underpinning. But in Discovery, a more magical method was employed—time crystals—and were used not to move a character through time but to offer a glimpse of what is to come. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Liam Smart to discuss time crystals and how they would affect different captains. We debate how each captain might react, whether they would take the crystal if they saw a future they did not like, and how they would deal with the consequences of their actions even before the action took place. The Rise, Fall, and Rise of L'Rell. From humble beginnings as a follower of T'Kuvma, L'Rell comes to support Voq, the Torchbearer, with whom she develops a relationship that proves beneficial. But when Kol uses her to captain a ship in his fleet—only to find that she has conspired with Admiral Cornwell—the trust she has earned is lost. Then, with hope seemingly gone, a hydro bomb lands in her lap—compliments of the Federation. With the power to destroy Qo'nos now in her hands, L'Rell rises again, ascending to the role of Chancellor—or Mother—of the Klingon Empire. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss L'Rell's journey from follower to leader. What are her motivations? Do they change throughout the first two seasons? Was she really a believer of T'Kuvma's teaching? Is she searching for unlimited power over her people? Does she truly want to unite the Klingon houses as one family? Yeah, we have a lot of questions … and maybe a few answers. Short Treks Retrospective. Now that Star Trek: Discovery's sophomore season has come to an end, a look back at the Short Treks that preceded it is in order. How well did the those mini installments foreshadow what was to come? Do you need to watch them to fully understand Season Two? Were they just fun little stories to satisfy fans' appetite for more Trek until Discovery returned? In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the Short Treks that were released between the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. Having taken in the Red Angel saga, we re-rank “Runaway,” “Calypso,” “The Brightest Star,” and “The Escape Artist” by how important we believe they are to the plot of Season Two. From Kirk to Archer, captains have always been the focus of Star Trek. But this is not true of Discovery. Captains have the responsibility to set the tone and efficiency of the ship so that the crew can complete its mission successfully. Because Michael Burnham is not a captain, these tasks happen on the edges of the story rather than at the center. Each captain we've seen during the first two seasons has had different interpersonal skills and their own approach to diplomacy and strategic planning. This makes comparing them am interesting task. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss nine leadership styles and explore how each captain seen on Star Trek: Discovery fits, paring them with a style of command. From the Philippa Georgiou to Gabriel Lorca to Christopher Pike, we reflect on memorable moments and discuss their lasting impact on Star Trek history. Sarek, Amanda, and Spock's Family. Spock and his family have always been an important part of Star Trek. For half a century, the writers have delved into Sarek's role in helping the Federation, Spock's upbringing, and even the diplomatic contributions of both father and son. But Star Trek: Discovery added immense texture to this aspect of the ongoing story by putting Sarek's family at the center of Season Two, introducing viewers to the relationship between Spock and his previously unknown adopted sister, Michael, and bringing Amanda Grayson to life like never before. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Brian Meloche, associate producer of The Edge, to discuss the importance of Sarek's family to Star Trek canon. We discuss Spock, Michael, and even Sybok as we explore the complexities of raising multicultural children on Vulcan. Biology in Discovery. Star Trek has a long history of weird science and alien biology, and Discovery continues this tradition well. More so than previous series, Discovery is able to portray things that feel a bit more truly alien. It's obvious that the writers have a love for weird biology and want to show something different from what we've seen before. A lot of thought has been put into fleshing out these species, and it's these small details that really make the world feel deep and real. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Nicholas Paul Collinson to discuss alien biology in Star Trek: Discovery. We delve into the mycelial network and its inhabitants, the JahSepp, as well as the yeel tree and the mycelium itself. The cosmozoans—life forms that live mainly in the vacuum of space—that we have seen include the tardigrade and the gormagander. Finally, we look at the biology of the Kelpiens and the transformation they undergo. Captain Pike. It seems as if Christopher Pike can do no wrong. We are told that he is Starfleet's finest, but why is Captain Pike the best of the best? From his command decisions to his personal connection with the crew, Kirk's predecessor gives hope and optimism to Star Trek: Discovery season two. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin deep-dive into Christopher Pike to explore the traits that made fans fall in love with Anson Mount's rendition of the character who first appeared in “The Cage,” the original unaired pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series. Will the points they uncover explain why there is little character growth for Pike during the season? Was he written too perfectly? Such Sweet Sorrow, Part II. What are those damn red things? Who is the Red Angel? Why does Jett Reno love duct tape so much? After thirteen episodes of twist, turns, and speculation, we finally have the answers—at least to the first two questions. In a beautiful display of time travel, Michael Burnham set the signals to ensure that present actions allows past events to save future life. And, along the way, we were reminded of the many adventures had by the crew of the USS Discovery as the season-long storyline unfolded. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the Star Trek: Discovery season-two finale. We touch on the spectacle of the battle with Section 31, the amazing visual effects, and the varied—and sometimes spinning—camera angles. We also explore the concept of an open time loop and why Burnham must close it for her story to move forward. Such Sweet Sorrow, Part I. Star Trek fans have seen their favorite characters put into some precarious situations over the years. But being tasked with erasing themselves from history? That doesn't happen often. Yet that seems to be the task at hand for Michael Burnham as she sets out on a one-way trip to tomorrow.
