The race is OVER! Thank you to everyone that donated to this wonderful organization. But the fundraising doesn't end at the race, you can donate all year long at: https://fdlt.memberclicks.net/donor-form#/ This week wraps up the collection of conversations we got at the Jensen Dental (https://jensendental.com/) booth at the FDLA Symposium and Expo (https://www.fdla.net/). Thank you Jensen Dental (https://jensendental.com/) for hosting us at this wonderful event. First we talk to Leah Gold, an assistant turned dental technician. Leah got into assisting while in Ohio and during the pandemic, she moves down to Florida and starts working in a in-office lab for a prosthodontist. Basically having to teach herself most of the skills, she was soon setting teeth, using exocad, and doing custom shades with MIYO (https://miyoworld.com/). Then as a BONUS, not at the FDLA, we bring back on Jade Connors, denturist out of Canada. We just talked to Jade last March at IDS and she was a day away from finding out if she won the CANDULOR KunstZahnWerk Award (https://www.candulor.com/en-us/kzw-winners-2025). Well, it turns out she did win and she comes on to talk about the process, the pains, and the wins, all while learning a new skill. Looking for a way to unlock the full potential of your digital dentistry workflow. Take it from Elise Heathcote, associate manager of digital services with Ivoclar. This is all about the Cam Academy. 1974 was a banner year for Jimmy Connors… He entered three Grand Slams and won all three of them. He was ranked #1 in the world and was engaged to Chris Evert. Life was good. But in 1975, things didn't go quite as smoothly. His engagement to Chrissy was called off… and while he was still the most dominant player in the world, he failed to win a Grand Slam, losing in the finals at the Australian Open to John Newcombe, in the finals at Wimbledon to Arthur Ashe, and now in the finals of the US Open to Manual Orantes. Was this the beginning of the end for Connors? Hardly. He would win 5 of his Grand Slam titles starting in 1976 at the US Open where he would there again in '78, '82 & '83 as well as Wimbledon for a 2nd time in 1982. And who would forget his incredible run at the 1991 US Open at at the age of 39. Curry Kirkpatrick hasn't forgotten it. He was covering a good portion of Connors and Evert's careers back when they were the King & Queen of tennis for Sports Illustrated and gives us an inside look at what happened to Jimmy against Orantes in the finals of '75. A simple reason for the shocking win was the Spaniard was sensational on clay courts, and beginning in 1975, Forest Hills surface was clay for 3 years. Advantage Orantes. Curry also tells us what happened on the women's side of the draw as Chris Evert was beginning her dominance of tennis… Having won the French Open in 1974 & '75 as well as Wimbledon a year earlier, Evert added the US Open to her list of achievements… and it was the first of 6 US Open Titles in her storied career as she would win it again in '76, '77, '78, '80 & '82.  Two of tennis all-time greats were dominating tennis in the 70's and Curry was there for all of it and joins us on POP to tell us how Orantes almost didn't even get to the finals and how that loss by Connors was just a blip as he would continue to be a force in tennis for another 15 years! And he tells us how at age 16 “he invented” Chris Evert writing the first major story about her in SI before penning the final installment of her illustrious career in the late 80's when she retired from the sport. Nobody knows Connors and Evert from the mid 70's like Curry Kirkpatrick and he joins us for a record 5th time on the show to regale us with great stories of two of tennis' all-time greats… Jimmy and Chrissy… on the Past Our Prime podcast Learn more about your ad choices. Bernie Maloney: The Triangulation Technique—Coaching Agile Teams Through Challenges Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Bernie identifies critical patterns that cause teams to self-destruct, with lack of clarity about intention being the most common culprit. When teams are treated as mere "task workers" without clear vision, strategy, or goals, they become depressed and directionless. Some teams seek forgiveness after failed experiments, while others get stuck seeking permission without taking enough self-leadership. Bernie emphasizes that waiting for direction is fundamentally self-destructive behavior, and Scrum Masters must create safety for teams to reach high performance. He introduces the coaching technique of triangulation, where problems become a third point that coach and coachee examine together, side by side, rather than facing each other in opposition. In this segment, we talk about “What the Duck”, a Lego Serious Play workshop. Featured Book of the Week: Start with Why by Simon Sinek Bernie champions "Start with Why" by Simon Sinek as essential reading for Scrum Masters working to transform team culture. He explains that compelling stories are how leaders truly influence others, following the sequence of Attention-Emotion-Reason. This book helps Scrum Masters understand that their job fundamentally involves changing culture, and leaders must demonstrate the change they want to see. Bernie connects this to the broader leadership challenge of developing coaching and mentoring skills within organizational structures. During this segment, we also refer to the following books:  Drive, By Dan Pink Change the Culture, Change the Game, by Connors et al. The Secret Language of Leadership, by Denning Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders, by Peshawaria The Geek Way, by McAfee Right Kind of Wrong, by Edmondson   Self-reflection Question: What patterns of self-destructive behavior might your teams be exhibiting, and how could you help them move from seeking permission to taking ownership? Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Jillene Connors Belopolsky, Chief of Staff and Chief External Affairs Officer at the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), to our Houston studio. Jillene joined the CCA in 2021 and has over a decade of experience in energy sustainability, strategy, and innovation. She previously served as Head of North America for Earth Security Group and in several senior roles at BP, where she developed strategies addressing the environmental and societal impacts of technology, climate change, and carbon management. Established in 2010, the CCA works to enable, influence, and accelerate local transitions to clean cooking solutions globally by supporting governments, unlocking and diversifying funding, strengthening enterprises, and fostering a harmonized, resilient ecosystem. We were thrilled to hear Jillene's insights on this important and often overlooked issue. In our conversation, Jillene shares an overview of the CCA's mission, scope, and focus on energy poverty, as well as her personal journey in becoming interested in working to alleviate energy poverty to enable people to live the best lives of their own choosing. We discuss the importance of energy access for prosperity, the scale of the challenge with 675 million people without electricity and 2.1 billion relying on polluting cooking fuels, and the health, environmental, and economic impacts of lacking clean cooking solutions, as well as why clean cooking is often overlooked despite its broad benefits. Jillene walks us through the CCA's range of solutions including induction stoves, improved biomass stoves, LPG with PAYGO models, ethanol solutions, and domestic biogas systems, alongside financing models and clean cooking performance standards. We explore ecosystem participants, from stove and fuel manufacturers to distributors and technology providers, as well as innovations such as smart metering, fuel ATMs, e-cooking tariffs, and monitored biogas systems. We touch on different LPG delivery methods, why Kenya is a leading example due to its prioritized clean cooking policies and regulatory environment, the $8.5 billion annual funding gap for deploying clean cooking solutions, the capital mix needed, government and international support, and opportunities to harmonize taxes and tariffs, build trade, and scale solutions across East and West Africa. Additionally, we discuss how businesses and individuals can support clean cooking solutions, the importance of a diverse mix of approaches, and clean cooking's immediate, cost-effective benefits for health, environment, and energy access. We cover the necessity of government leadership in creating an enabling environment for clean cooking access and economic development, why a combined government-private sector approach is needed in Africa, the urgent need for private sector involvement to accelerate progress, the strategic opportunity for energy companies to leverage their expertise and resources to support clean cooking initiatives, and much more. It was a thought-provoking discussion and we're very grateful to Jillene for sharing her expertise with us. For additional information on the CCA, their 2024 Annual Report is linked here. Mike Bradley kicked off the show by noting the 10-year bond yield (~4.3%) was unchanged as July CPI reported in-line with expectations. July PPI is due Wednesday, and if it also reports in-line, markets will be anticipating the first of three interest rates cuts for 2025 at the September FOMC Meeting. Initial Jobless Claims, Retail Sales, and Consumer Sentiment reports are all set to report later this week. The S&P 500 rallied ~1% on Tuesday mostly due to the in-line CPI print. Equity markets over the next few months will likely be more driven by economic/world events than equity fundamentals. The path of least resistance still looks up and to the right,

Just Wondering... With Norm Hitzges

Once upon a time, American tennis ruled the world—McEnroe was yelling, Connors was winning, and Sampras had the smoothest serve this side of Wimbledon. Now? Let's just say… pickleball might be giving tennis a run for its money. In this nostalgic and thought-provoking episode of Just Wondering, legendary broadcaster Norm Hitzges dives deep into “The Decline of American Tennis.” From the glory days of packed stadiums and national pride to today's dwindling spotlight, Norm breaks down how—and why—tennis slipped from the American sports throne.

50 years ago Jimmy Connors was at the top of his game and ready to defend his Wimbledon title from a year ago… coming into the finals at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, Jimbo hadn't lost a set to any of his 6 opponents. Arthur Ashe was a huge underdog against the World's #1 player and in fact, many of Ashe's friends didn't attend the match for fear of Jimmy winning convincingly like he had the year prior over Ken Rosewall. But Arthur had different plans… and a strategy that worked perfectly against Connors… The normally hard-hitting Ashe implemented a softer approach, with lobs and drop-shots that kept Jimmy off balance for much of the match… and when it was all said and done, the 40-1 longshot had pulled off one of the biggest upsets in tennis history in becoming the first black man to become a Wimbledon champion winning in 4 sets, 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. Already the first black men to win the U.S. Open and the Australian Open, Ashe cemented his place as a tennis legend with this third and final grand glam victory, this one being the least likely of the three. Ashe would win 76 Singles titles in his career, but only 9 more after his Wimbledon triumph, with his final one coming in September of 1978. 18 months later at the age of 36, he retired from tennis and set his sights on bigger things… Like changing the world. The humble athlete wasn't as vociferous as Muhammad Ali when it came to his stances… but he was every bit as effective in getting his point across. He became an advocate for Civil Rights, stood up against South Africa's Apartheid, and founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS after contracting HIV from a blood transfusion. He died at the age of 49 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously by President Bill Clinton as well as an award for lifelong contributions to humanitarianism named aptly, the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1993. His life off the court was more impressive than his Hall of Fame career on the court and was chronicled in the documentary ‘Citizen Ashe', directed by Rex Miller and Sam Pollard. Miller grew up a fan of tennis and of Ashe and after a chance encounter with Ashe's widow, Jeanne Moutoussamy, the film had her blessing and Miller's expertise. The result being a wonderful sports doc that the New York Times said “Ashe's story certainly has moments of great drama and high tension, but, as a sports figure, he inspired decidedly undramatic sobriquets like 'the gentle warrior.' This documentary shows you a truer, sharper picture.” Rex Miller tells us how Ashe came up with the strategy that beat Connors in 75 at Wimbledon and how Connors dropped a lawsuit against Arthur the day after the match in England concluded. He tells the story of how he found lost audio tapes of Ashe, that became the primary voice of his film and a goldmine for a director. He recounts how being recruited by UCLA changed his life and how winning at Wimbledon was the crowning moment of his career which gave him a new sense of credibility and opened up his ability to effect change for the rest of his life. It's a show about a tennis player who was much, much more than that. Rex Miller helps tell the story of Arthur Ashe in his film ‘Citizen Ashe' and he does it again on the Past Our Prime podcast. The Great Product Owner: The Collaborative Innovator Joel describes an exceptional Product Owner scenario at a large insurance organization where complementary skills created magic. Working with two different people - a business expert who understood insurance but lacked development knowledge, and a designer with user experience expertise - Joel suggested the designer take on the Product Owner role while collaborating closely with the business person.  This collaboration between complementary skills produced outstanding results. The great Product Owner understood that their role wasn't to control every detail but to unleash developer creativity by providing problems and context rather than prescriptive solutions. Joel's approach of "give the developers a problem and a canvas" allowed the team to innovate while staying focused on customer needs. This Product Owner fostered innovation rather than preventing it, demonstrating how effective collaboration can transform product development. The Bad Product Owner: The Business Analyst That Couldn't Let Go Joel identifies a problematic anti-pattern: the Business Analyst who transitions to Product Owner but can't abandon their documentation-heavy approach. While Business Analysts can make excellent Product Owners with proper support, those who insist on documenting everything create communication bottlenecks and slow down delivery. This creates a "telephone game" effect between the BA/PO and developers. Joel encountered one such individual who would declare "the developers can't do that" without giving them the opportunity to explore solutions. Following his "no-scroll bar rule" for documentation, Joel emphasizes that Product Owners should provide just enough information to enable developer creativity, not overwhelming detail that stifles innovation. When the problematic BA was replaced with someone who understood customers and trusted developers, the team's innovation flourished. In this segment, we refer to the book Liftoff, by Larsen and Nies. Self-reflection Question: Are you enabling developer innovation by providing problems and context, or are you stifling creativity with excessive documentation and control? Joel Bancroft-Connors: Sustainable Value—Redefining Success Beyond Profit Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Joel has evolved his definition of Scrum Master success over time, moving beyond traditional metrics to focus on what truly matters: sustainable value delivery. While Agile principles clearly state the goal of delivering value continuously, Joel emphasizes that success isn't just about making profit - it's about creating sustainable profit through sustainable processes and people practices. He challenges Scrum Masters to consider their "people sustainability metric" and asks whether their approach supports long-term team health and organizational resilience. Joel's definition encompasses three pillars: delivering sustainable value, maintaining sustainable processes, and ensuring sustainability for people. This holistic view of success requires Scrum Masters to think beyond immediate outcomes and consider the long-term impact of their practices. In this segment, we refer to the book Turn the ship around! by David Marquet.  Self-reflection Question: What is your people sustainability metric, and how are you measuring whether your Scrum practices support long-term team and organizational health? Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Back to Basics Joel advocates for returning to the foundational retrospective format outlined in "Agile Retrospectives" by Derby and Larsen. Rather than getting caught up in complex or creative retrospective techniques, he emphasizes the power of following the basic steps: set the stage, gather data, generate insights, decide what to do, and close the retrospective. Joel stresses that there's an important arc to retrospectives that shouldn't be overlooked. By taking time to properly gather data and following the structured approach from the agile retrospectives book, teams can achieve more meaningful and actionable outcomes. Sometimes the most effective approach is simply executing the fundamentals exceptionally well. In this segment, we refer to the book Agile retrospectives, by Derby and Larsen.  [Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Joel shares his first experience as a CSM at a traditional hard drive manufacturing company, where he learned the art of patient change management. Tasked with bridging the gap between a rigid mothership company and their agile startup division, Joel discovered the power of focusing on principles rather than processes. For six months, he concentrated on creating transparency and shifting focus from status reporting to "getting to done" without ever mentioning Scrum or Agile.  His approach followed what he calls the 90-day rule: "In the first 90 days - do no harm, but then have a plan to do something." By listening first and building trust, Joel helped the team deliver a product in just three months. He emphasizes the importance of making people feel valued and using "future perfect thinking" to envision desired outcomes before introducing change. In this episode we refer to Luke Hohmann's Innovation Games, the website and resource Manager-Tools.com, and Daniel Pink's book Drive. Joel Bancroft-Connors: How Performance Reviews Killed a Great Agile Team Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Joel tells the story of a team caught in the crossfire of a poorly executed large-scale agile transformation. While the CTO championed going agile, they quickly checked out, leaving the organization without clear direction or understanding of why they were adopting agile practices. The company measured success through output metrics like "number of teams trained" rather than meaningful outcomes. Joel worked with an exceptional team that had built their own collaborative workspace and was performing well, but external forces kept pulling them out of flow. Performance reviews created internal conflict, leading team members to focus on individual success rather than collective achievement. The team ultimately fell into their own traps, with everyone "focusing on themselves and throwing others under the bus." Joel recommends balancing performance evaluations with 50% team-based and 50% individual metrics to prevent this destructive pattern. Self-reflection Question: Does your team truly understand why they are using Scrum, or are they just going through the motions of the framework? Featured Book of the Week: Start with Why by Simon Sinek Joel credits Simon Sinek's "Start with Why" as a transformational influence on his coaching approach. The book's central principle that "people don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it" fundamentally changed how Joel teaches Scrum. He realized he had been teaching Scrum incorrectly by focusing on the mechanics rather than the purpose. Now Joel listens to this book annually and has shifted his focus to helping teams and organizations understand why Scrum matters and why it's important. This shift from teaching the "what" to emphasizing the "why" has made his coaching significantly more effective and meaningful. Joel also mentions the book Coaching Agile Teams by Lyssa Adkins. Joel Bancroft-Connors: When Great Scrum Masters Fail—The Hidden Cost of Poor Value Communication Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Joel shares a powerful lesson about the critical importance of communicating value beyond team performance. Despite achieving remarkable success with multiple teams as an agile coach, Joel and his colleagues ultimately failed because they couldn't effectively demonstrate their value to leadership. The teams were thriving, but when budget cuts came, the coaching support was eliminated first. Without ongoing support, these successful teams began to deteriorate. Joel emphasizes that as Scrum Masters and agile coaches, we must actively communicate our impact and connect team success to business outcomes. Simply assuming that good team performance speaks for itself is not enough - we need to interact more with stakeholders and clearly articulate the value we create. In this episode, we refer to the TV series Ted Lasso, and the books Start with Why by Simon Sinek, and Coaching Agile Teams by Lyssa Adkins.  Self-reflection Question: How effectively are you communicating the business value of your Scrum Master activities to leadership, and what specific metrics or stories could better demonstrate your impact?
