The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send a textIn this episode, we examine characters like Dobby, Petunia Dursley, and Severus Snape and discuss how their defining moments differ between the Harry Potter books, films, and what we should hope for in the new Harry Potter TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· Listen to episode 322 Tea Leaves S2 E2 here!· 2:10 Dobby. He's the foundation for this episode. Dobby has his big moment at the very end of his arc when he sacrifices himself for Harry and friends to escape Malfoy Manor. That shouldn't be his moment to shine! Earlier on, perhaps he runs into Draco at Hogwarts and refuses some ridiculous order. The TV has room for moments like these.· 13:49 Petunia Dursley. She is Harry's last connection to his family, and it's super easy to forget that when she's being mean to Harry. But a few moments earlier in the story when we see Petunia's softer side would go a long way. She really wanted to go to Hogwarts, and her refusal is why she's so bitter. We should have an opportunity to see past that ice wall. · 20:19 Snape. His story is truly heartbreaking story, and his love for Lily just wasn't meant to be. But I don't want to see that side to him only after he has died. The climax of his arc should be his death and the memory he shares with Harry, but we should see little hints of that emotion behind the greasy hair.· 24:18 Horace Slughorn. He needs more screen time! After the Half-Blood Prince, Slughorn falls into the background. In the Harry Potter TV show, there should be no characters looked over for the sake of time. He has such a heartwarming story, and he showed real courage in overcoming his shame. We should see more of that!Having anything you want to hear or say? The original Scary Movie cast is officially back, and we’re unpacking why this reboot is the elder millennial nostalgia hit we didn't know we needed. From Anna Faris and Regina Hall returning to their iconic roles to the Wayans brothers reclaiming the franchise, we break down the "past my prime" narrative that previously sidelined these stars. Then, we have to talk about Married At First Sight Australia. Between a resurfaced video of Joel drumming with sex toys and the "vicious" dinner party showdown over his childhood teddy bear, the experiment has reached a whole new level of chaos. We’re debating whether Juliet’s reaction was a proportionate response or a total overreaction, and why the "Bear-gate" debate is currently taking over every group chat in the country. Is it a sign of a “quirky star" trying too hard, or are we just witnessing the most bizarre deal-breaker in reality TV history? But first, 13 minutes of bullshit. We really make you wait for it. And we also spend a lot of time on Game Changers, the first book in the series which Sarah read and Cyrus didn't. Send a textOrder a copy of my acting debut film, Cape Cod Cthulhu!A short-lived TV show that was ahead of its time. A vintage educational short-film about the rise of computers. Some of the biggest tech fails of the 80s.Episode 234 helps March come in like a lion with a fresh batch of GenX nostalgia. It starts with a look back at a short-lived television show that might have been way ahead of its time. Get A Life starred Chris Elliot and at times felt like a comedy fever dream. Though it only lasted two seasons this surreal, dark, and downright wacky show influenced many shows that came after it.In the 1980s, computers were becoming a fixture in schools, homes, and businesses. Growing up in that decade, it was important for students to learn the ins and outs, the whats and whys, of computers. We review a classic vintage educational short film, Computers: Tools for People, from 1983.Computers were a success, however many pieces of technology came out in the 1980s that flopped hard. This week's Top 5 will look at some of the biggest tech fails of the 80s. 2025 Hit Sleeper Dud is here, and this year it's a solo pod.Whitey is on the road, the Academy Awards are looming, and the team is temporarily scattered, but the show must go on. So in true Born to Watch fashion, we break down the year in film the only way we know how, by calling it straight. The hits. The sleepers. The duds. No fence-sitting. No safe takes. Just movie love, movie rage, and a bit of chaos in between.First up, the HITS.Leading the charge is F1, starring the forever-sexy Brad Pitt. It's big, loud, formulaic and absolutely electric. Joseph Kosinski proves again he knows how to strap a camera inside a cockpit and make you feel every rev. Unreal cinema fun. That's what movies are supposed to be.Then comes Weapons, the horror surprise that had Whitey on edge from start to finish. Creepy premise, massive performances, and Amy Madigan absolutely crushing it. This one lingers.Stephen King's The Long Walk delivers bleak dystopia done right. Cooper Hoffman proves the talent runs in the bloodline, and Mark Hamill playing against type adds weight to a brutal premise. The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands better than expected, giving Marvel just enough oxygen to stay alive heading into Doomsday. Period setting, Galactus looming, and yes, Pedro Pascal everywhere. And yes, Jaws returning to cinemas for its 50th anniversary still rules the ocean. Some films do not age. They evolve. Now the SLEEPERS.Anaconda (2025) should not have worked. But it did. Jack Black, Paul Rudd, jungle chaos, midlife crisis energy. Low expectations. Big laughs. The Naked Gun reboot? Surprisingly hilarious. Liam Neeson leans into absurdity and Pamela Anderson brings the heat. It's not Leslie Nielsen, but it earns its laughs. Then Marvel's quiet comeback entry, Fantastic Four, sneaks in again as a sleeper-level win.Now the DUDS.Jurassic World Rebirth proves some DNA experiments should stay extinct.Superman should have soared. Instead, it stumbled. Strong casting, messy execution. And Captain America: Brave New World? Whitey turned it off. Enough said.Plus, we talk about the “meh” movies like Sinners and One Battle After Another, which were good but not great. Then we look forward. Spielberg. Nolan's The Odyssey. Michael. Masters of the Universe. Mandalorian and Grogu. Avengers Doomsday. Dune Messiah.Big year coming.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONWhat was YOUR 2025 Hit Sleeper Dud?Did Superman deserve better? Are we done with dinosaurs yet?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show.Like. This week on NAFC, the crew starts off with Discord issuing an apology for that weird age verification fiasco—because nothing says community like uploading your ID to talk about anime.Izzy goes deep into Mewgenics again, fully embracing whatever chaotic timeline we're living in. There's also talk about Resident Evil Requiem and whether Capcom still knows how to cook.Somehow the episode spirals into a heated debate: back in or front in parking? Friendships are tested. Logic is abandoned. AirPod Pros also get their own segment after surviving a full laundry cycle like they're built by Nokia. Finally, the gang dives into 13 Assassins (2010)—Takashi Miike's brutal, methodical samurai epic. Slow burn, tactical planning, and then absolute chaos.Support us on Patreon!

Send a textIn the this episode, we discuss Harry's conflict with Mr. Dursley and the Weasley's rescue from 4 Privet Drive in our version of the Harry Potter TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 1:59 Quick recap and Harry at Privet Drive. He is back in Sad Harry mode with his previous life. We want to set this baseline of him hating his muggle existence so later on it means something to him.· 9:37 The Masons are the driving force. Their story is why Vernon is so uptight, and why he is so adamant that Harry be as quiet as a mouse. This will be the conflict that leads to Harry's imprisonment, so it's very important that we set it up early.· 18:08 Things start to heat up. The Masons arrive and while the Dursleys are greeting them in the driveway, Dobby apparates into Harry's room with a loud crack, and maybe knocks something off a shelf. The Masons hear it from all the way outside and the tension is already set before they even walk in.· 29:27 Harry can't believe what he has done. The whole cake fiasco had lead Harry to believe that he is expelled and will never see Hogwarts ever again. After Dobby drops the cake on Mrs. Mason's head, Vernon locks Harry up. After a few nights, Ron and the twins come to Harry's window bars, rips them off, then struggles with the Dursleys to get Harry out. Finally, he's free.Having anything you want to hear or say?
