Send us a textJoin us for an enlightening conversation with Dr. Mitch Maki, President of the Go For Broke National Education Center, as we uncover the enduring legacy of Japanese American veterans from World War II. Discover the powerful story behind the phrase "Go For Broke" and how it became the rallying cry for the brave 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team. These soldiers, who faced fierce battles abroad and prejudice at home, became the most decorated unit of their size in U.S. military history. Dr. Maki shares his lifelong passion for preserving their stories, driven by his own childhood experiences in Los Angeles. We journey through America's past mistakes, examining the internment of Japanese Americans and its painful legacy. Reflecting on the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, we discuss how acknowledging these injustices can inform our approach to contemporary issues of race and political leadership. There's a yearning for the bipartisan cooperation once exemplified by leaders like Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan, and we explore how their spirit of unity can guide us in today's polarized world. By learning from history, we aim to foster a more cohesive society. This episode also highlights the innovative ways the Go For Broke organization inspires civic engagement among young Americans. Through storytelling initiatives like the Torchbearers program and the Go For Broke Journalism Institute, students connect historical events with modern-day issues, cultivating pride and a commitment to positive change. From fashion collaborations to journalism projects, we showcase the transformative power of these narratives in nurturing a deeper understanding of loyalty, sacrifice, and civic duty across generations.

#1082 Bring a Little Personality to Your Business

More than a Few Words

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2024 11:36

I have often been told that I have a strong personality and it kind of came through in my business but I never really thought about the fact that all businesses have personality. Guest Naomi Gora talks about the  importance of including ourselves in our business strategy. So many business schools teach us to get to know our ideal customers and competitors but none that I've seen start the process of looking at ourselves first – how can our businesses thrive based on what works for us as well as our customers. Yes, your business has a personality, and how you understand and align with it can make a huge difference.  As a self-identified Torchbearer personality type, Naomi spent years in media and advertising, feeling like an outsider until she embraced her own strengths and values to build a business that truly fit her.   She  begins by explaining that business personalities aren't always discussed, but they're crucial. Too often, entrepreneurs build businesses that cater to their ideal clients or competitors, but end up hating their own creations. She urges business owners to first look inward, asking themselves, “Can I do this every day?” She introduces the concept of business personality types—like her own, the Torchbearer, and others like the Empire Builder or Station Master. These types reveal how you naturally operate. Some people thrive on systems and structure, while others, like Naomi, find those elements exhausting. When entrepreneurs try to mimic personalities that don't match their own, they often face burnout. Naomi explains that knowing your business personality helps you work more authentically and reduce stress. She uses a metaphor called the “car model,” where your brain is like a car with a driver, co-pilot, and backseat passengers (a 10-year-old and a 3-year-old). If you let the backseat drivers (stress and overwhelm) take control, your business suffers. By understanding your strengths—your “driver” and “co-pilot”—you can operate in your genius zone, making your business flow more easily. Naomi's advice? Don't fight your nature. Align your business with your true self, and you'll find running it becomes more enjoyable and sustainable.

Projektą, kodiniu pavadinimu „The Torchbearers“, dalinai finansuoja JAV ambasados programų alumnų fondas ir Vokietijos ambasados atsparumo (Resilienz) iniciatyva. NARA komanda išlaiko visišką turinio kontrolę ir žurnalistinį nepriklausomumą. Pilna publikacija: https://nara.lt/lt/articles-lt/naomi-koc

Tahni Cullen spoke at a women's retreat I emceed over ten years ago, and her story is one I'll never forget. I sat alone in the front row and wept as she shared about how her son, Josiah, a happy, talkative baby, regressed at the age of 19 months into the world of a non-speaking autistic diagnosis. When Josiah was around 7 or 8 years old, he began spelling, and the fire within him roared. Tahni has been the torchbearer of her son's thoughts and livelihood since. There's so much more to this life than what the world has to offer. As those who claim to be believers in Christ, we know this to be what we should say but do you know this to be reality? Peter Reid takes a look at the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3 and points out the fact that "it's possible to come from a Godly home, to be in the environment of Godly people and yet be Godless". Peter then goes on to share the remedy to this dilemma. www.instagram.com/thehishillpodcast/www.hishill.org

After unexpectedly making it to the semifinals of the 2022 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Search competition, NoorJehan Tourte made it her mission to get women excited about the prospects of falling on their faces over and over. She believed that becoming a Sports Illustrated model would represent the culmination of a lifetime spent searching for her true identity. But the experience helped her realize that her childhood dream was not only to be a cover model, but also a role model, one who empowers women to show the world in every way, from every angle, who they really are, unapologetically. NoorJehan says leadership and empowering other women has made her more productive. She says it reminds her there was a time in her life where she was feeling insecure or threatened by other women, and that held her back in many ways. “All that was doing was robbing me of time to do what I wanted to do and to put myself out there,” says NoorJehan. Striving to be the best mom, best business owner, best wife all comes from a place of needing validation. It's a cycle we have to break to steer away from the women-on-women dynamics of competitiveness and insecurity. As co-lead of the brand strategy department at AREA 23, she says she has to remind herself that leading equals doing. She's been told to delegate and be a role model and has seen that some folks interpret role modeling as having direct reports look up to them. NoorJehan says her interpretation of role modeling is her direct reports to see her if you look to the left and right instead of up. She wants her reports to think, “I'm just so happy that she's here and she's doing this with me. I'm going to get it done, and it's going to be done well, because NoorJehan is here supporting me through it.” Leading is knowing when you need to get in the trenches because it's for the greater good of someone's well-being or someone's mental health. She says when you build that kind of trust, and you show them your credibility, the hope is to have earned their goodwill if you need to call upon them in the future. Oftentimes as women we might look at other people's lives and think, “they're so lucky that things just work out for them, or fate is just on their side,” says NoorJehan.  Then, you start to count all the reasons and all the times things didn't work out for you. NoorJehan says she did that as a young girl, but she was able to shift her perspective because her parents would remind her of her resilience. “If you really peel back your life, you will see that you are getting rejected more than you were ever getting accepted. And that's okay. That's life. But my mind immediately pivots to okay, how do I open my own next door?” says NoorJehan. She says when we talk about people that are always looking for the next best thing, it's someone who's scared of commitment or just scared of accepting a lot. But for her, she's very content. Contentment is what drives her desire to try again when something didn't work out. What's the next thing that you can try? It can't get worse than this. Today's guest will help us understand what the rock-bottom moments mean and how they relate to our own purpose, especially if you're an entrepreneur.  These moments allow us to grow; they enrich our experience of being alive; they deepen our ability to help others. And, they allow us to be helped as well. Jacki Semerau Tait needed to recreate herself after losing her home and income sources. Her rock bottom became the catalyst she needed to launch her dream life. She's currently a top producing realtor with a background in marketing and advertising, and she's been using her expertise to coach other real estate agents nationwide As you're listening to this episode, if you're thinking, I've never had a moment like that or I don't know what that feels like, I would encourage you to think about is whether or not you're still healing. These moments where we have to ask for help, or we have to look in the mirror and ask, am I self-sabotaging? Did I cause this to happen? Or what strengths do I need to help myself get out of this? That's the moment. That's a moment where you can start to find your own purpose and start to build strength from it. Jacki says now more than ever, people need to see the authentic journey that entrepreneurs go through to be successful.  “There's no such thing as an overnight success,” says Jacki. “You just wake up one morning, and this person's in your awareness, but you don't see the 20 years of blood, sweat, tears, heartache, depression.” Jacki says society advertises this idea that we should be safe, secure and life should be easy – we shouldn't have to struggle.  “We think that when we go through the struggle, we're doing it wrong. There's something wrong with me. I, I must not deserve it,” says Jacki. “We get all that garbage in our head. That brings us to that moment of going, ‘Well, I might as well just give up.'” When you're in the middle of it, you're lost. Jacki recalls the saying, you can't see the forest for the trees, and it's so hard to look out. It took Jacki two and a half years to get back on her feet after losing her home. In the midst of it, her friend was able to attend a conference with motivational speaker Les Brown. While Jacki couldn't afford to go, her friend lent her the CD set she'd bought.  Jacki says his messaging changed the trajectory of her life and helped to get her outside of herself. Fast forward, two years later and Jacki was given the opportunity to be mentored by Les Brown. Her story was published in Ignite the Hunger With You. She realized if Les hadn't shared his stories, she wouldn't have had those in that moment. Now it's her job to share her story, and hopefully, that reaches even if just one person who needs to hear the message. As a speaker, it's important not to share from a wound, but from a scar. If you haven't healed, you can end up triggering other people instead of inspiring them. If you still have that open wound, it's okay. Keep learning the lessons. Journal. Record videos, and know that when this wound scars over, then it's time to share your story. There are women that stand beside us and there are women that go before us, and there are women that are coming behind us. If you feel alone, know that you are surrounded, whether you believe it or not, by torchbearers or mini torches behind you, trying to make the path better. Wamite Muthura is the founder and chief storyteller of Career Safari, a platform that spotlights and celebrates the diverse career journeys of women. It offers authentic advice and resources to help women more boldly navigate the challenges of career life and redefine their own definition of success. If you've been looking for permission to expand where you are right now, or to maybe break some of the molds that you're seeing in front of you, the Career Safari and this conversation with Wamite might make a difference in how you're viewing your next career moves. When Wamite started Career Safari, she was lost and trying to define what success looked like for her. She had found passion very early on working at an NGO, but was at a point where she knew she didn't want to do that anymore.  “So much of my identity was tied into what I was doing,” says Wamite. “It took a lot of unwinding, and there was several little things that happened to kind of help me understand who I am.” Ultimately, it was the stories from women she was working with who gave her hope and light. These torchbearers were vulnerable about their career stories and lives – facing divorce, leaving countries, and changing careers. “I want to give diverse stories a platform … and I want them to have evidence and proof that there are people that look like you, that are probably doing things that you're already doing, or something similar to what you want to do,” says Wamite. “And we're not alone in this journey.” She notes that no matter what industry, most of the women she's meeting are still facing gender barriers. Even in fields that tend to be women-dominated such as teaching and nursing, when you reach the leadership levels where decisions are being made, they're facing those barriers. “If there are millions of us that are out there starting podcasts, starting businesses, whatever it may be, starting media channels that are focused solely on women's empowerment, that's still not enough,” says Wamite. “We are dealing with generations of toxic images that we are trying to counteract and change.” One torchbearer story that really resonates with Wamite was of a doctor attending a global health conference, who realized there were no women on stage. She started a hashtag that became a global movement and eventually founded Women in Global Health.  Wamite says the doctor originally went to another woman leader asking, what are we going to do about this? And the woman's wise response was, why don't you do something about it? It was that nudge inside her that fueled her passion to make the change. Those little nudges can guide us. For Wamite, she doesn't like how women are treated in the workplace, which is why she built her platform to share the community that helps empower women. Let's get to it!
