Most of the time, beauty lies in the simplest of things. It was actually really nice to be able to go to the hosts' place after my day's visit. It gets dark really quickly during winters in Europe, usually before the end of the working day around 5pm. The weather was often miserably cold and rainy; just the sort of weather for returning to the host's place where we either shared food or I cooked for them. This time in Switzerland I even had the opportunity to share amazing special food from my hosts, like Matthew in Bern who taught me how to make Raclette, which looks like Swiss Grill with cheese using a special oven. While I stayed with Josh in Lucerne, who's from Hawaii but lived in Switzerland for many years, he made lao lao, a Hawaiian meal wrapped with taro leaves. It was really impressive. I will never forget its fragrance and taste. It was so delicious too. Saving money and sharing food with Couchsurfers is great, but nothing compared to the rewards of hearing the stories of people who live there and exchanging experiences. For me, it was also an opportunity to share and contribute my experiences and knowledge. Josh was a very special man and he shared many stories with me. He was an artist and was really kind when we met. A few years ago, when Josh was a successful entrepreneur he experienced a tragic family bereavement which left him feeling sad, angry and lost. He made a few big lifestyle changes including moving to Switzerland and was now ready to share his stories so as to help other people heal. I have been a podcaster for many years and I want to use this knowledge to help others too. Over the years I've benefited tremendously by telling my own healing stories, helping others and making a living. One night, we sat down and created a podcast together and organized the ideas. It was a very beautiful moment that I will never forget. Stay tuned...there's much more to come! In the next episode I'll be sharing a story of a well-traveled single mom from Switzerland. FM https://reurl.cc/j5Kdz2

MEET EMILY BRANCELEmily (and her husband Stefan) were my first CouchSurfing hosts that I stayed with for three weeks in Detroit. I was blown away by how open and genuine they both were and for the zeal with which they both follow their sparks of passion and curiosity! For Emily, that might look like raising quails, to fostering greyhounds, to gardening and growing her own food, to taking in CouchSurfers. I am forever grateful for how they opened their lives and home to me and for the fresh perspective they offered of what it looks like to release external expectations and live your most authentic, inspired life. When I asked Emily to describe herself she said: I'm a simple Midwesterner with an open mind and heart. My motto is short: doing the best I can, one day at a time.IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL HEAR: - What "wealth" means to her (not in the monetary sense).- Her journey from being a shy kid to a gregarious teenager attached to others' approval to finally releasing expectations and embracing who she really is.- How vulnerability can spark connection, acceptance and support. - Beautiful detours that have led her to amazing nature hikes in Columbia to marrying her husband. - How her and her partner redefined marriage to create an ethically non-monogamous relationship that works for THEM. - Insights on honoring yourself and the seasons you go through in life. and so much more!Content Warning: Sexual Abuse. "I never thought I was going to travel two or three years ago...it just came up to me...it was some sort of instinct saying 'Let's do it. Let's go for it.'" - Ryoji Yoshimura Ryoji Yoshimura (@ryoji_o_yoshimura) is a veteran couchsurfing host based in Kitakyushu, Japan. Since 2015, he has hosted over 40 travelers in his home. These travelers are commonly called "couch surfers." A couch surfer is a person who stays at a local's place, often on their couch or extra mattress, for free. Meeting travelers from around the world, Ryoji felt inspired to see a bit of the world for himself. After trips to The Philippines and South Korea, Ryoji took a year off from school to travel. In order to do this, he first spent four months working in Australia. Once he had enough money he put these funds towards visiting places like the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Iran. Ryoji has fascinating experiences from couchsurfing in different countries and continuing to host travelers in his home. The lessons he learned throughout his gap year changed his perspectives and helped him develop a deeper understanding of who he is. He is now finishing up his university studies in Kitakyushu, which I think is a great testament to not put your dreams on hold.   Some of the things we discuss include: Experiences from couchsurfing: both hosting and being hosted. Hitchhiking around Taiwan Tools for learning a new language Developing a better understanding of yourself Global connections and relationships And so much more   You can find the full episode description, show notes and links at https://edgeofcomfort.com/eocp3/

She doesn't couch surf herself but hosts dozens of people from around the world at her house in Amsterdam.  She's a travel writer and an American expat and writes all about her new home in Amsterdam at www.wordgeisha.com She's amazing to listen to and her stories are fantastic! What is this Couchsurfing thing you ask? Couchsurfing International Inc. is a hospitality exchange and social networking website. The website provides a platform for members to "surf" on couches by staying as a guest at a host's home, host travelers, or join an event. Melissa is a host in Couchsurfing and will talk about how she chooses who she hosts. She also shares some not so good experiences with Couchsurfers and also the super interesting and fun ones. She talked about her rules as a host which make it much easier for you to figure out how you should get into the Couchsurfing world easier.
