In this latest edition of the podcast, Mick The Hat continues recounting his remarkable journey with Pink Floyd, continuing from where he left off with the final Wall show on June 17th, 1981 at Earl's Court. Beginning in 1984 with The Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking tour, Mick's recollections as a Pink Floyd enthusiast and concert taper cover the early solo careers of Roger Waters and David Gilmour, continuing into Pink Floyd's final tour in 1994. Mick talks about how the desire for more Pink Floyd related records was at a peak in the mid 1980's, when many outside artists collaborated with members of the band before the “Dry Floyd” formed. Most notable is how a tape of David Gilmour playing Cliff Richard almost made it onto a bootleg vinyl, and currently has yet to be released. From accidentally flushing his contacts in a hotel room outside of Sweden, to running a Taxi Driver's toll fare up in New Jersey, finding himself in the sea of empty faces in Berlin, and witnessing after-gig road crew jams in Paris, Mick's stored and well-travelled recollections of this period is a story not to be missed.
This week, Scheana is joined by friend and fellow Bravoleb Hannah Ferrier for an honest, hilarious chat about the chaos of life both on and off camera, the moment Hannah knew her yachting days were officially behind her, and how different life looks now as a mom in Australia compared to her Below Deck era. Hannah reveals why she passed on joining a certain Real Housewives franchise — and how she somehow ended up riding a mechanical bull with strangers the night before. The two dive into Bravo hot takes (Kyle Richards may want to sit this one out), behind-the-scenes industry politics, and the tricky balance of supporting friends while navigating business, loyalty, and reality TV drama. Hannah also shares the luxury item she bought herself immediately after getting fired from Below Deck, plus where things really stand today with Captain Sandy. Elsewhere, Scheana and Hannah swap hitchhiking stories, unpack the mystery of Peter Madrigal's alleged AI girlfriend, and Hannah completely shocks Scheana with how Below Deck tipping actually works behind the scenes (wait…they don't get all of it?!). Plus, could Hannah be returning to reality TV soon? You'll have to tune in to find out. Pat almost refused to do this. Before we even hit record, he told me he had a strong feeling this interview shouldn't happen. We gave it a shot anyway. What came out isn't a story that is pretty & clean. It's what it actually looks like when someone is trying to figure out their life after actively screwing parts of it up.We talk about growing up feeling isolated & out of place.Writing music while dealing with depression & not wanting to be alive.Hitchhiking with no phone, no stability, no real plan.Stealing from people who trusted you & having to sit with that.Getting sober & realizing that doesn't fix the damage, it just means you have to face it.There's a moment in here where we're talking about that betrayal, & you can feel it. Not simply as a story but, as something that actually happened between two people trying to sort out the messiness.Over all it's a conversation with someone trying to be honest about who they were & who they're trying to become now.If you've ever looked at your own life and thought, “I've made a mess of this”…this conversation is going to feel familiar & hopeful.Support the podcast & get bonus episodes & goodspatreon.com/BackontheGrindConnect with Friends In Real Lifeinstagram.com/friendsinreallifemusic/friendsinreallife.bandcamp.com/music Get Coffee for the Bandit in you (roasted by Pepe)StayFreeCoffee.comBack On The Grind Records - For DIY, Folk Punk, Rap & Merch:backonthegrindrecords.bandcamp.com/musicFollow the podcast on Instagraminstagram.com/backonthegrindpod/?hl=engramReach out...Send us questions, comments or topic suggestions toPodcast@BackOnTheGrindRecords.comLeave a comment/question on Spotify or Instagram (we read them all)***Word of mouth really matters for us. Dr. Karen Hickman sits down with John Weir, Dr. Laura Goodman, and Dr. Mark Turner to talk invasive plants across the Great Plains—what's here, what's coming, and why our best defense often starts with a clean pickup, a better plant choice, and a tighter contract. We walk through Callery/Bradford pear's "overnight" takeover, Old World bluestem's misnamed reputation, and how sericea, Johnson grass, privet, kudzu, honeysuckle, tree-of-heaven, Siberian elm and others move from roadsides to rangeland. You'll hear field-tested tips: early detection/rapid response, where to scout first (gates, pens, ditches), what to tell pipeline and oilfield crews about decontamination, how hay can import problems after wildfire, and why tall, highly productive grasses (miscanthus, giant reed/cane, phragmites) pose wildfire risks on the urban–rural edge. We wrap with Oklahoma's watch lists, better native alternatives (hello, Mexican plum), and a clear message—don't plant your problems. Dive into the thrilling tale of Clarence Terhune, the daring 19-year-old who became the world's first airship stowaway aboard the legendary Graf Zeppelin in 1928! MF Thomas uncovers the audacious adventure that blended Roaring Twenties optimism with high-altitude recklessness. From humble St. Louis roots, marked by tragedy and a thirst for exploration, Terhune honed his skills hopping freight trains, stowing away on ships to Alaska and Hawaii, and gate-crashing epic boxing matches like Tunney vs. Dempsey. When the massive LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin—776 feet of engineering marvel, commanded by Dr. Hugo Eckener—arrived in Lakehurst, New Jersey, after its stormy maiden transatlantic voyage, Terhune saw his chance. Hitchhiking from New York, he sneaked aboard amid the chaos, hiding in the mail room for a perilous return flight to Germany. Enduring freezing cold, howling storms, and hunger, he was discovered mid-journey and put to work peeling potatoes in the galley.Upon landing in Friedrichshafen, Terhune emerged a folk hero, showered with job offers, marriage proposals, and even an invitation from Zeppelin's daughter. Fined minimally and celebrated worldwide, his story symbolizes aviation's pioneering spirit and the era's blend of innovation and risk.Explore aviation history, Zeppelin facts, and untold stories of stowaways in this gripping podcast episode. Guests Luke Fowler and Sam Edder share what it's been like on their bikepacking adventure from Vietnam to Spain. The two friends, better known as The Garbage Bag Boys have certainly chosen to take on some of the most challenging routes. They've also taken on the Tian Shan Traverse and the Celestial Divide routes, as well as the Caucasas Crossing. I spoke to them while they were in Greece about to head into the final part of the journey. This trip has been full of adventures, from surviving a roof-ripping storm in a derelict shack to pushing their bikes through deep sand for hours on end, Luke and Sam share brutally honest stories of hardship, freedom, privilege, wild landscapes, and the lessons they're gathering along the way.Together we talk about:Hitchhiking across IndiaHow two student paramedics decided to ride across the worldThe storm that tore the roof off their shelterThe emotional weight of travel, privilege & storytellingThe Gobi Desert and why it's a place they never want to ride againWhat brings meaning to long-term human-powered travelHow their perspectives have shifted along the journeyWhy discomfort is equal parts addictive and transformativeFollow their adventures via their instagram - @GarbageBagsBoysCheck out the Cycplus tiny e-Pumps and use the code STR for a 5% discount Support the showBuy me a coffee! In 1980, a 20-year-old Graham Broyd turned a prestigious six-week scholarship to Washington, D.C. into the adventure of a lifetime. He traded his ticket for a flight to Los Angeles with a dream of surfing in Malibu and a wild plan to hitchhike across the country. In this episode, Graham shares the incredible story of his journey, a tale he revisited in 2024 to see how the country and he had changed. This is the ultimate story of hitchhiking across America then and now. What happens when you have just $600 to survive for six weeks, relying on your wits and the kindness—or danger—of strangers? This sprawling conversation, a must-listen for fans of incredible travel stories, is like a living "Backpack, Jacket, Surfboard" book review. Author Graham Broyd sits down with Blaine DeSantis to recount his unbelievable journey. We hear tales of extreme budget survival, like his method for turning a single Big Mac into a three-course meal, a story that comically landed his book in the "cooking humor" category on Amazon. Graham shares the unwritten rules and etiquette of the road, offering a fascinating look into the lost art of hitchhiking. This Graham Broyd travel memoir comes to life as he discusses his disastrous first attempt at surfing in Malibu, how he acquired an eight-foot surfboard as a travel companion, and the frightening night he spent alone in the desolate expanse of Death Valley. The episode explores the stark difference between America in 1980 vs 2024, contrasting the past with the present through Graham's retraced journey. He shares thrilling and sometimes chilling stories from hitchhiking America, from navigating an unwelcome advance near the Grand Canyon to the bizarre experience of ending up in Tijuana, Mexico on a trip to Malibu—a mystery he still hasn't solved. We learn how a single smart jacket gave him access to the high-rolling casinos of 1980s Las Vegas and how a chance encounter in a youth hostel led to a stunning interview with Senator Howard Baker about the Panama Canal Treaty. This detailed look at hitchhiking across America then and now culminates in a tale of unexpected benevolence on the gritty subways of New York City, proving that adventure and humanity can be found where you least expect them.About Our Guest:Graham Broyd is the author of the travel memoir "Backpack, Jacket, Surfboard." In 1980, at the age of 20, he embarked on an impromptu hitchhiking trip across the United States, a journey that profoundly shaped his life. Over 40 years later, he retraced his steps to recapture 24 photos from his original trip, discovering not only how much America had changed, but how much he had as well.Timestamps:(00:00) A Scholarship Becomes an Epic Adventure(02:12) From D.C. This week I sat down with Jian Wong Yen, the founder of Cold Nips and a true social entrepreneur who has built one of Australia's largest and most inspiring wellness movements. We dive into Jian's upbringing and personal journey to creating a community that's not just about cold water dips, but about connection, resilience, and fun. He opens up about the lessons he's learned along the way, and how small actions can create big ripples in culture and wellbeing. One of my favourite parts of this chat is when Jian shares the wild adventure he had with his girlfriend — hitchhiking across Europe for months on just 10 euros a day. The stories are hilarious, humbling, and remind us that joy and growth often come from living simply and saying yes to the unknown. This episode is a mix of entrepreneurship, adventure, and community building — and it's full of practical takeaways and entertaining stories that will leave you inspired to lean into life a little more.We talk about:Jian's upbringing and what shaped his entrepreneurial spiritThe story behind starting Cold Nips and how it grew into a massive wellness movementWhy cold water and community go hand-in-hand for mental healthHis hitchhiking adventure across Europe with just €10 a dayLessons in simplicity, resilience, and creating impactIf you enjoy this episode, make sure to share it with a friend who loves adventure and wellness ✨Follow Jian COLD NIPSINSTAGRAM

On Episode 68 we introduce the first installment of the Cosbey Chronicles. Marc Cosbey, aka Uncle Coz, Cozmo, Sharkey, is the kindred spirit of the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, and one of its co-founders. On a frigid February day in 1974, 25-year-old graduate student Mary Schlais stuck out her thumb to hitch a ride. She planned to travel from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Madison, Wisconsin and then make her way north to Chicago to attend an art show. Back then, it was common for young people to rely on the kindness of strangers for transportation. Hitchhiking around the Twin Cities was something Mary did regularly. That cold February day was the last time anyone saw the free-spirited woman alive. Mary's body was discovered later that day, but it would be more than 50 years before her killer was tracked down through genetic genealogy.
