When two nations are at war, the conquering Kingdom would make a treaty with the now vassal nation (the kingdom now subject to and absorbed by the winning kingdom). The Treaty Form followed a 5 fold template. This template can be seen in the Ancient Near East throughout history. This is the same structure we can observe in the word of God. The Book of Revelation is a masterpiece and John (writing what Jesus, the Son of Man, told him to write) uses this Treaty Form template. The Lord has a controversy, or heated dispute with his people, Israel (Northern kingdom) and Judah (Southern kingdom). The word controversy, in Hebrew, is riyb, and is means “a heated dispute” or a “lawsuit”. Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel. Micah 6:2 The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. Hosea 12:2 For it is the day of the LORD'S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy (riyb) of Zion. Isaiah 34:8 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy (riyb) with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. The people are being outwardly religious but in their behavior and their character they are not expressing the character or the heart of the God of Israel. We are to keep the mishpat with a pure heart. Learn to do well; seek judgment (mishpat), relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17 Following the Torah is caring for the fatherless and the widow. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. James 1:27 Israel did not take care of the poor and the needy. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these things? says the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? Jeremiah 5: 28-29 In showing the character of God in how you treat others with checed (love/mercy), emet (truth) and tsedaqah (righteousness) you are bringing the kingdom of God in to this world. A shudder of sobering anxiety ought to course through the spine of every mere mortal caught red handed in their lethargic routine of self-serving living. Divine court is now in session. Psalm 50 reminds us in legal tones that one day a decree will go out through all history to appear before the heavenly throne of God's justice. This song in the most terrifying reality imaginable for those devoid of a propitiation sacrifice. The righteousness of God and His just demands have been revealed throughout scripture in legal terms and so they appear here as well in a song structured like a formal lawsuit. This Psalm of Asaph compels the God fearer to bow before His honor glorifying YHWH with the sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Exodus 17:1-7; the Book of Exodus is a profound book which teaches us about Yahweh's Faithfulness to increasingly unfaithful Israel. He saved from slavery and just a few chapters later the people bring a Covenant Lawsuit against Moses and Yahweh, charging them with treason. If the people are justified in their charge then Yahweh should die, if they are not then they take the penalty for their unjust charge. How will Yahweh maintain his Holiness and his Mercy? Who is going to die?
