06.29.2025 | Mountaintop Moments | Part 1: Mt. Sinai: Moses Meets God | Pastor Jeff Wickwire Have you ever stood on a mountaintop, feeling the presence of God envelop you? In his stirring sermon, Pastor Jeff Wickwire dives into the biblical significance of mountains, starting with the majestic Mount Sinai, where God met Moses and laid down the Ten Commandments. This moment wasn't just a monumental event for Israel; it symbolizes God's unwavering love and protective boundaries for humanity. Pastor Jeff urges us to view these commandments not as restrictive rules, but as loving guidelines designed to keep us safe from destructive choices. Just as mountains stand towering and strong, the laws given at Sinai provide us strength, stability, and divine clarity. In our current world, where moral lines often seem blurred, Pastor Jeff's message challenges us to embrace God’s commandments as life-giving, not life-limiting. Today, he calls us to reflect on our lives—are we respecting these divine boundaries? If you haven’t yet committed your life to Jesus Christ, don’t walk away without making that step in faith. Join us and let the love found on Mount Sinai change your life forever!
A wonderful meandering chat with Ketan Badani (Urologist, Mt Sinai, NYC)! We took him for a wine tour in the Yarra Valley, stopping for a pod chat at Rochford Winery about screening for prostate cancer in older men, plus a great tour around Healesviile Sanctuary to introduce Ketan to some Australian wildlife. Then back in Melbourne we had another chat, this time a bit of future-gazing about the future of surgery, and Declan and Ketan trade tales about EMR (that's Electronic Medical Record) delinquency. Ketan was visiting Melbourne as a guest of Device Technologies to speak at the Epworth Healthcare Robotic Urology Masterclass. And what a great guest he was! With your usual hosts Renu Eapen and Declan Murphy. Thanks to our fantastic guide Trish at Healesville Sanctuary, and Beatrice who looked after us at Rochford Winery. This one much better enjoyed on our YouTube channel!Links:Rochford Winery Healesville Sanctuary

For twenty-eight years he lived the ascetical life on Mt Athos as a disciple of St Gregory of Mt Sinai. Later, he founded the monastery of St Mamas, also on Mt Athos. In 1350 he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople. After four years, he resigned the patriarchal throne to return to the Holy Mountain, but was called back to the throne, where he remained until his death in 1363. He wrote the definitive lives of St Gregory the Sinaite and St Theodosius of Trnovo. He was known to St Maximos Kapsokalyvia (the Hut-burner), who foretold his death: On his final journey to Serbia, on which he died, the Patriarch stopped on Mt Athos, where St Maximos saw him and said, "This elder will not see his flock again, because I hear behind him the hymn over the grave, 'Blessed are those that are undefiled in the way...'"

EPHESIANS 3:20 Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us,Pentecost means 50th and It relates to the fact that 50 days after God brought Israel out of Egypt—they arrived at Mt Sinai and camped before the mountain of the Lord. It's no coincidence that 50 days after Jesus' resurrection—the very day Jews we're remembering the events of Mount Sinai, came the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on those 120 disciples as tongues of fire Pentecost is referred to as the birthday of the church. It marks the day the holy spirit descended upon the apostles and other disciples, empowering them to begin proclaiming the gospel and transforming their lives, thus igniting the church's mission. Those 120 who were in the upper room were baptized in the Holy Spirit. We have passed through the Feast of Shavuot tonite on the Hebrew calender but the Feast of Pentecost will be on Sunday June 8 on Christian calender. As we approach June 8 we need to remember that God gave the Torah on Mt Sinai (Exodus 19-20) and His Spirit in the upper room (Acts 2) that we may know Him and be more intimate with Him. He revealed Himself in Word on Mt Sinai and Word and Spirit in the upper room with fire baptism that we may be one with Him.The outcome of God revealing Himself means we must accept who He says He is through the Torah and Holy Spirit and receive His ways then we are ready to be sent and go forth! God is so good He wants us to receive these commands and move forward in being an example like God Himself and be a giver! He gave Himself in Torah and His Spirit to us!It's our job now as sent ones to give more than people even ask for. We see that in the 1st miracle that Peter and John did at the Gate of Beautiful right after receiving the baptism by fire on Pentecost !Read Acts 3:1-6 God also gives the 7 blessings from Passover stated after Pentecost in Exodus are:God will assign an angel to His people (Ex. 23:20)God will be an enemy to the enemies of His people (v. 22)God will give prosperity to His people (v. 25)God will take sickness away from His people (v. 25)God will give long life to His people (v. 26)God will bring increase and inheritance (v. 30)God will give a special year of blessing (v. 31)Read Luke 6:38As God has been giving of Himself during Feast Of Shavuot or Weeks. And just as in Deuteronomy 16:16-17 , we are instructed to give in Exodus 23:16-17.“And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field. Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD.”Then in Exodus 23:20-31, God gives the 7 Blessings as He says!Let's step into freely receiving and now having boundaries that are too freely be our identity in Him- which is a giver! Foreboding is not a word we use much these days; the dictionary says it means – ‘have a premonition of something evil or harmful.' Jesus used it (as translated by the ESV) in our reading today [Luke 21 v.26]; he forecast that just before he returns to earth there will be, “distress of nations in perplexity … people fainting with fear and foreboding of what is coming on the world.”In our younger days there was optimism that even better times were coming because of the new inventions in many areas. This was not just in the things we buy for our homes, but the better fertilisers and increasing productivity. Clever scientists and inventers were making life better and better – and when Communism collapsed as the Berlin wall came down in 1989 it seemed the world was entering a new golden era of peace and prosperity. How dramatically the scene has changed since then – still greater changes are threatening now; all for the worse. As we read Numbers Ch. 11 today we saw some comparisons. The Israelites had had a wonderful and miraculous deliverance from captivity in Egypt. There was a “honeymoon” period at Mt Sinai and a special tabernacle was built using the gold they had taken from the Egyptians. Then “manna,” the bread from heaven, was provided as their staple food. But today's chapter starts, “And the people complained about their misfortunes … oh that we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions …”[v.1,4,5]. Today's world has so many who are ready to complain about anything that is not just as they want it !Two hundred years ago nearly everyone believed in a Creator as the source of all things. One hundred years ago, the majority of people still believed this but today a large majority have turned their backs on the God of the Bible. Man is now his own ‘god.' What happened to the self-centred Israelites in the wilderness will have its parallel to the 21st Century as people faint “with fear and foreboding” and distress and perplexity becomes overwhelming. Our Proverbs' chapter again has valuable advice, “Keep my commandments and live … call insight your intimate friend” [v.1,4].Insight! Inward vision in your heart of the real meaning of life (and Easter) is the antidote to being full of foreboding about what is coming on the world, only God's word provides the right “food” for seeking hearts..
Scripture Passage 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Worship Video Worship Audio Sermon Script Have you had a personal experience of meeting God? Meeting God is a wonderful experience. When you meet God, everything is good. You feel embraced by God's love. Your burdens are lifted. You feel that everything is going to be alright. Many of you have experienced this kind of wonderful encounter with God. This is what it was like when the Corinthians received the gospel. Meeting God instills a core belief: that everything will be alright. In God's hands, all will be good. In Christian faith, we call that hope. Everything might not be alright now, but they will be. Hope is at the core of Christian faith. Hope is what the resurrection is all about. No matter how bad things are now, in the end, God will be victorious. The writer of Revelation articulates a beautiful vision of this good ending: See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them;they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and be their God;he will wipe every tear from their eyes.Death will be no more;mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. (Revelation 21:4) That is the promise of our hope. Our whole Christian faith is built on the promise that no matter how bad things are right now, in the end they will be alright. Because of that hope, how you live now changes. You live based on the promise that is to come. That's what happened to the Corinthians when they met God. Christ was coming soon, and that all would be well. Based on that belief, they made radical changes to their lives. They created a new community that crossed social and economic lines. Relationships that would never have been formed were created. It was a beautiful new kind of humanity and community. When you meet God, that hope seems so real and alive. It is a beautiful thing. But what happens when that hope doesn't manifest? What if there is a never ending delay to that promise? What if things don't really get better? Things don't change or even get worse? When the promise of a better future doesn't become real, two questions arise in the heart: What's the point? What difference does it make? What's the point of holding onto faith when nothing changes? What difference does it make to keep trying? Your belief in the promise of a better future erodes. You lose hope. That is the situation that Paul is addressing. Christ did not come as they expected. Their problems remained. They were losing hope. In today's passage, Paul is warning them using examples from the past. The examples he uses are from the Israelites when they were in the wilderness. The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt. God heard their cries and sent Moses to lead them out of Egypt. They experienced the mighty hand of God in leading them out and providing for them. This is how Paul describes this: I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. (1 Corinthians 10:1-4) God had led them out with a mighty hand. God promised that he would lead his people into the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. But then they got stuck in the wilderness. People grew restless. They began to lose hope in the promise. Paul describes what happened: Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. (1 Corinthians 10:5) They lost hope and fell away from God. Paul has a few warnings based on what happened to them in the wilderness: Do not become idolaters as some of them did, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play. (1 Corinthians 10:7) This is based on the golden calf. Moses went up to Mt Sinai to receive the commandments from God. But he took so long. The people got tired of waiting. They demanded a god they could see. So Moses' brother Aaron created a golden calf. They held a festival where they ate, drank and played. God makes a promise that all will be good. But when things don't seem to get better, people easily turn to other things. Where do you really turn to to feel safe and secure? What do you trust to make your life better? We must not engage in sexual immorality, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. (1 Corinthians 10:8) At another point during their time in the wilderness, they settled at a place in Moab. The men began to sleep with Moabite women. Not only that, they began to offer sacrifices to Moabite gods. They forgot about God's promise. They lost hope they would ever get to the Promised Land. So they focused on pleasure for that moment. Many people say: just focus on the present. We should enjoy each moment, yes. (Olivia tanned from vacation – jealous!) But when you only focus on the present and ignore the future, if all you look forward to is pleasure, it could be a sign of lost hope for the future. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. (1 Corinthians 10:9) When God's promise does not come to fruition, people question God. When I see people, they don't turn to God or places like the Bible for wisdom, guidance and answers. They turn to experts online, influencers, people who sound intelligent. Anywhere but God. When I mention the word Bible , many times I sense an immediate aversion. It's almost like: God can't exist when there's all this mess – prove to me that God exists . Even after all that God had done, many people in the wilderness questioned God himself. And do not complain, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. (1 Corinthians 10:9) People complained and grumbled to Moses the whole time. They even asked why he had brought them out of Egypt. At least there they had food to eat! Grumbling, complaining, being a victim – these are not marks of trust in God and his promises. Paul uses these examples to identify pitfalls to faith. Things that take your eyes away from the promise we build our lives on. What is the Christian journey? It is living in that gap between God's promise and its fulfillment. That's what it means to follow Jesus. The Christian life exists in tension between the messy reality that's now and what will be. That's why it can be so difficult. That's why so many people fall away. Christian life is not for the faint of heart. It's not for those seeking a simple, easy life. It is living with that gap that sometimes seems like a chasm. The main ingredient for life in this gap is faith: trusting in the promises of God, even when they seem so far away. Trusting the one who makes the promises. When faith goes, so does hope. There are so many reasons to lose belief in God's promises. We have our Sioux Valley info session today. So many challenges – drug epidemic among youth. Grave concern among elders and leaders for youth. Legacies of history and residential schools is tragic – breakdown of family life where love is experienced. Message from broken family and outside world: you are not loveable. Questions: what's the point? What difference does it make? Lost hope – no belief that future can be different, better. It seems more difficult than ever to hold onto hope in God's promises. But I hold onto God's promises. Why? First, because life with no hope is no life. I don't want to have nothing to live for! Secondly, because of what I've experienced and because of people's living testimonies of faith. I've seen the living testimonies of faith in you and places like Sioux Valley. I've seen people get through so many challenges and difficulties with faith in God's promises. They don't lose hope. I've seen the power of faith that moves mountains and overcomes all manner of tribulations. They assure me that God's promises are real and true. My friends, it is worth it to hold onto the promises of God. The rewards of the promise are great. They are life. They are joy. They are fullness. Living with faith in that promise has its rich rewards now. It brings peace, joy, community. That is what we are: a community that holds onto the promises of God. Paul gives this assurance to us: No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13) We face many tests of our faith. But God will not let them overcome you. God will give you strength. God will give you a way out! God will hold up your hope. Hold onto hope. Do not give up. Find rest in the promises of God. The post Hold Fast, Do Not Give Up appeared first on St Timothy Presbyterian Church.
The author of Hebrews continues to reference Old Testament Scripture to make a defense for the superiority of Christ over all things. The earthly tabernacle is but a shadow of the heavens, where Christ serves as great high priest. He has made a superior sacrifice, shedding His own blood rather than that of goats, bulls, or rams. He oversees a new covenant, where the law is written on the hearts and minds of those who trust in Him. Men and women of faith who came before Him were waiting for the promise of His coming. In Him, we haven't come to Mt Sinai, but Mount Zion, where Christ intercedes on our behalf. Hebrews 10 - 1:15 . Hebrews 11 - 8:02 . Hebrews 12 - 16:13 . Hebrews 13 - 21:58 . Psalm 28 - 26:18 . The Holy Fathers at Mount Sinai lived in the wilderness around the holy mountain before the Emperor Justinian built the famous Monastery there in 527. The brethren were attacked by a band of Saracen barbarians who massacred Doulas, the superior of the community, and most of the other monks. They only stopped when a pillar of fire rose to the sky from the summit of Sinai, causing them to flee in fear. The Forty-three Holy Fathers at Raithu were massacred on December 22, but are commemorated together with the fathers of Sinai. They lived the monastic life on the shores of the Red Sea. One day about three hundred Ethiopian barbarians raided the area, killing many Christians and enslaving their wives and children. They attacked the church at Raithu, where forty-three fathers had taken shelter. Their abbot Paul enjoined them to persist in prayer to the end, putting no stock in the passing life of this world, which they had renounced when they came to the desert. No sooner had he finished his prayer than the barbarians broke in, slaughtering all the monks but one, who escaped to bring news of the attack to Mt Sinai. When the barbarians returned to their ships they found that the Christians had run their vessels onto the rocks. Enraged, they killed all their prisoners. They themselves were massacred by a band of armed Christians who arrived soon afterward.
What would you expect to find at the REAL Mount Sinai? Could its true location be in Saudi Arabia rather than the traditional site in the Sinai Peninsula? In this podcast episode, Frank unpacks some of the details of his recent trip to Saudi Arabia, including what he and the group saw as they climbed the mountain at Jabal al-Lawz. He'll also discuss what fascinating markers distinguish this mountain as a great contender for Mount Sinai and why it's more important than ever for trained archaeologists to continue exploring the site. During the episode, Frank will answer questions like:Why was the Sinai Peninsula originally selected as Mount Sinai? How long did it take Frank and the group to get up the mountain? Why have there been so few excavations at Jabal al-Lawz?Who is Hathor and what's a possible explanation for all the cow drawings found on the mountain? What evidence exists suggesting that Jabal al-Lawz is the true Mount Sinai? What were Frank and the group AMAZED to see once they reached the top of Jabal al-Lawz?What's so special about the Split Rock of Horeb? It is based on Exodus 19. This story recounts Israel's first experience as soon as it got into the wilderness after being rescued from Egypt. Moses makes several trips up and down the mountain to communicate with God. God wants the people to prepare for a theophany, in which God will come in a thick cloud, accompanied by smoke, fire, thunder, and other phenomena. Moses is instructed to prepare the people for this by consecrating them. There are requirements to be observed, since getting close to a holy God can be dangerous. Eventually, God comes to the mountain and speaks to the people directly. This is one of the few times that God does not speak through a mediator. What he says is the ten words, or ten commandments. This theophany emphasizes the significance of those commandments.
Delivered By Chris Tankey on 20th October 2024. When God does something in the Bible, we should consider it carefully. He does nothing without a purpose, and thinking about His actions tells us about His character and nature. One of the most important events in the Bible occurred at Mt Sinai where God called Moses up the mountain and gave him two stone tablets on which He had written some rules for living - they are of course, the Ten Commandments. He was born in Thessalonika around 1300; his mother was a convert from Judaism. He entered monastic life, first at Mt Sinai, then at the Great Lavra on Mt Athos. The so-called "Hesychast controversy" was then raging, and St Philotheos became one of the firmest and most effective supporters of St Gregory Palamas (November 14) in his defense of Orthodoxy against western-inspired attacks on the doctrines of uncreated Grace and the possibility of true union with God. It was St Philotheos who drafted the Hagiorite Tome, the manifesto of the monks of Mt Athos setting forth how the Saints partake of the Divine and uncreated Light which the Apostles beheld at Christ's Transfiguration. In 1351, he took part in the "Hesychast Council" in Constantinople, and wrote its Acts. In 1354 he was made Patriarch of Constantinople; he stepped down after one year, but was recalled to the Patriarchal throne in 1364. He continued to be a zealous champion of undiluted Orthodoxy, writing treatises setting forth the theology of the Uncreated Energies of God and refuting the scholastic philosophy that was then infecting the Western church. Despite (or because of?) his uncompromising Orthodoxy, he always sought a true, rather than political, reconciliation with the West, and even worked to convene an Ecumenical Council to resolve the differences between the churches. This holy Patriarch was deposed in 1376 when the Emperor Andronicus IV came to the throne; he died in exile in 1379. St Philotheos composed the Church's services to St Gregory Palamas. He is not listed in the Synaxaria, but is venerated as a Saint in the Greek church.

Lessons From Mt Sinai - Show Me Your Glory by Amarillo Church of Christ Sermons
One of the great ascetics, hesychasts and spiritual teachers of the Church, he did much to restore the knowledge and practice of Orthodox hesychasm. He became a monk at Mt Sinai. He traveled to Mt Athos to learn more of Orthodox spiritual prayer and contemplation, but found that these were almost lost even on the Holy Mountain. The only true, holy hesychast he found there was St Maximos of Kapsokalyvia (Maximos the hut-burner, January 13). Maximos lived a life of reclusion in crude shelters; from time to time he would burn his hut and move to a new one, so as not to become attached even to that poor earthly dwelling. For this, he was scorned as a madman by the other monks. St Gregory upbraided the monks and told them that Maximos was the only true hesychast among them, thus beginning a reform of spiritual life on the Holy Mountain. He spent time teaching mental prayer in all the monasteries of Mt Athos, then traveled around Macedonia, establishing new monasteries. Some of his writings on prayer and asceticism can be found in the Philokalia. He reposed in peace in 1346.
