Before we began Galatians, I asked for recommendations as to where in scripture to go nextA trusted friend suggested we venture through the minor prophets- “minor” because they are relatively short compared to Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel• I hesitated for awhile, then procrastinated, finally hoping to dodge The Dozen prophets at the end of the Hebrew Scriptures• even though the longest of them is only fourteen chapters and shortest is only one chapter,◦ they still require as much study and preparation as the major prophets◦ so it's basically been a matter of laziness- however, we have reached a point in our nation's history,• in which we need to hear the voice of these prophets• and Hosea in particular

We think of Hosea as a book where God, in His longsuffering, announces His love for Israel that would endure until the end. Yet God's love and longsuffering had been long established by that day. We consider this together in Hosea 1:1.

Hosea was a contemporary of Amos whose ministry of prophecy lasted around 40 years, beginning during the reign of King Jeroboam II and ending during Hezekiah's reign, who Judah's next king in our chronological reading. Like Amos, Hosea spoke to the nation of Israel, often referenced as “Ephraim” in this book, under a time of lavish wealth and disparate poverty. Israel was being unfaithful to their God, and like the unfaithful nation the Lord has committed himself to love, Hosea is commanded to marry an unfaithful woman. Hosea's pursuit of his unfaithful wife serves a parallel to God's pursuit of unfaithful Israel, who loves foreign gods and decadent foods like raisin cakes more than the God of Israel.Hosea 1 - 1:08 . 20 Proverbs 17-18; 27 Daniel 8-12; 28 Hosea 1; 19 Psalms 107-111; 44 Acts 16-19
The LORD called Hosea to preach to the northern kingdom, Israel, during times that were prosperous economically but horrific theologically. The first part of Hosea's book centers on the LORD's command for Hosea to marry a wife of whoredom, Gomer. Through Hosea's marriage, the LORD provides a living sermon of the relationship between Himself and Israel. The names given to the three children of Hosea and Gomer all initially preach against the idolatry of Israel, and yet, the LORD will later turn the meanings of these names on their head to give His Gospel promises of His faithfulness. Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Hosea 1:1-11. Although the books of these prophets are shorter, the Word of God they preached was important in the years leading up to the coming of the Christ, and that Word remains important for the Church today. Just as we still need to listen to their call to repentance over our idolatry, so we still need to heed their call to trust in the Savior, Jesus. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Not much is known about the prophet Hosea, save what is mentioned in this record of his prophecies. By referencing the Kings under which he prophesied, we can see that his ministry lasted around 40 years. The Rev. Nick Lannon preaches a sermon on Hosea 1, in which God compares his relationship with sinful humans to a faithful husband buying back and bringing home and unfaithful wife. When we stray, God redeems us in Christ.
Faithfulness is an important part of human relationships. It builds trust, confidence, security, and well-being. When it's broken, it is often much easier to point out others' lack of fidelity than grapple with our own. But that is exactly what we need to do if we want access to the hope and connection that we can find on the other side of “the word we didn't keep.” Join us for our second week in the series Searching For The Word.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | June 15, 2025In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from Hosea 1-2. These chapters explore the powerful imagery of Hosea, where God calls the prophet to live out a parable of His relationship with unfaithful Israel—portrayed through Hosea's marriage to Gomer and their children, each symbolizing the nation's spiritual state. Despite Israel's betrayal, God promises redemption, transforming those who were "not my people" into His beloved through a new covenant fulfilled in Jesus. This prophecy lives on today as the church—Christ's bride—carries the mission forward, seeking the lost and embodying God's mercy and faithfulness.

Have you ever wondered if we can out sin God? Or to put it another way, Can we ever sink so low and sin so much that God's grace can't reach us? These are the difficult questions our teacher, Dr. J. Vernon McGee, answers as he guides us through the first chapter of Hosea.
