And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. 4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,[a] that is, those who dwell in heaven. 7 Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them.[b] And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, 8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear:10 If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. In the grand theater of the cosmos, where divine order clashes with rebellious pride, the story of heaven's original exile sets the stage for every tale of downfall that follows. Picture Lucifer, the morning star, once a radiant cherub among the highest ranks of angels, anointed to guard God's holy mountain, his beauty and wisdom unmatched until iniquity twisted his heart like a serpent coiling around the throne. As the prophet Isaiah thundered in chapter 14, verses 12 through 15, Lucifer declared five defiant "I wills"—to ascend above the heights of the clouds, to exalt his throne above the stars of God, to be like the Most High himself. This was not mere ambition; it was hubris incarnate, a cosmic coup born of envy and entitlement, rallying a third of the heavenly hosts in a war that shook the foundations of eternity. Revelation 12 paints the cataclysm: Michael and his angels clashed with the dragon and his fallen legion, hurling the great deceiver, that ancient serpent called Satan, down to the earth like lightning from the sky, his place in heaven found no more. Ezekiel 28 echoes the verdict, God casting him out for profaning the sanctuary, his heart lifted in pride until violence and corruption sealed his banishment to the pit. The story of life demands that justice and righteousness prevail. Some sense must be drawn from all the senseless evil in this world. John falls into despair at ref​lecting on the possibility that there will be no judgment, no true reconciling of all things—a restoration when God is all and in all. He wonders whether perhaps it's all meaningless. He wonders whether there will be a response from God in the end. John cries out at the thought. He cries out for someone to make sense of the wreckage. And in this final moment, when it appears that all is lost, an elder insists that John stop weeping. He's come to rescue the lost—Adam and all of us—and draw us into his saving life. In his body, he accomplished this victory. You might be like John today, weeping because you think there's no way to make sense of what's happened in your life. The elder, John, and I all want to remind you—look to the Lamb. He's worthy. Look at him. See what he has done. He has won a victory for you, for us, for the world that will transform our weeping into absolute worship and adoration. Let's ask the Spirit to help us see the Lamb who opens the scroll. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity.
