Madisen and Ruth Ward of “Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear” started long before the child of the mother-son duo was born. During her career as a solo artist, Ruth Ward began inviting her son Madisen on stage to join her live performances in coffee shops in the Kansas City Metro. The band has gone on to play with greats like B.B. King and Old Crow Medicine Show and gained national attention for their hits like “Silent Movies” and “Yellow Taxi.” Their second album, “The Radio Winners,” shows the depth and talent of the band and their unique take on folk music.
First came Basie, then “Bird,” and finally the Kansas City jazz scene brought us Bobby Watson. The Kansas City, Kansas, saxophonist left the metro after attending community college, then went to The University of Miami for his bachelors, and finally got a “master’s degree” by playing with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. After playing in the legendary band, Watson eventually made his way back to Kansas City to continue his career as a musician and teacher. Bobby Watson reflects on his time as a “Messenger,” and talks exclusively about his 2017 album, “Made in America.”
