This music is at its best when the artist is telling you exactly who they are. Pianist Andrew Hill always seemed able to take us inside his internal mindscape of thoughts, puzzles and emotions. Whether alone or in an ensemble, in both his playing and his writing, he did so with an articulateness that could seem offhand but betrayed a distinct precision. It was just... him. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum knew Andrew Hill and draws inspiration from him to this day. Host Mitch Goldman is going to ask him if he really was the way he seemed in his music. Did he talk the way he played? Once again, the WKCR archives come through with gobsmacking rarities from both the early Seventies and the early 2000s. Tonight we present a very special concert that took place in Vancouver at the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Theatre and was presented by the old Vancouver New Jazz Society. It took place on a Sunday night on December 6, 1959. The star was the great Modern Jazz pianist Russ Freeman. Mr. Freeman was one of the leading and busiest pianists on the West Coast as he had played with Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Art Pepper ,Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss and many other greats. He was a hard swinging and inventive pianist who had his own style. Russ and Hampton Hawes were the two leading lights of Jazz piano on the Coast. He was very happy with his two accompanists and inspired by their talents. They were Vancouver legends Stan "Cuddles" Johnson on bass and swinging drummer Jimmy Wightman. Russ didn't do many trio albums under his name and this disc issued by Montreal's Just a Memory label adds greatly to his legacy. Sadly these fine musicians are all gone but their music lives tonight as The Jazz Show's Jazz Feature.

It's time for a deep dive, listeners, and the subject this round is underappreciated West Coast keyboard wizard Hampton Hawes. Hawes did most of his best known recordings for Contemporary Jazz, and we'll look at a couple of releases on that storied (but also underappreciated) label, as well as a collaboration with Charles Mingus and a sample of Hampton's seventies output, when the sideburns got longer and the keyboards got plugged in. Hampton Hawes: BLUES FOR WALLS ; FOR REAL; FOUR! Charles Mingus: MINGUS THREE. Pat takes a ride with Casey Jones in pop matters.

Harold Land was one of the leading tenor saxophonists in Jazz but he is often overlooked as he wasn't based in New York City. His sound is very distinctive with a dry unsentimental quality yet there is warmth and intensity too. This album is a series of broadcasts with three different ensembles led by Harold Land done at what was Seattle's leading Jazz club: The Penthouse. The first group is Harold Land on tenor saxophone with Carmell Jones on trumpet, Buddy Montgomery on piano, Monk Montgomery on bass and Jimmy Lovelace on drums. The second band is Harold leading Hampton Hawes on piano, Monk Montgomery on bass and Mel Lee on drums. The third is the Harold Land/Monk Montgomery Quartet with John Houston on piano and the incredible Philly Joe Jones on drums. This album of previously unissued performances will add much to the legacy of Harold Land and will become a prized possession by Jazz fans everywhere. Thanks to Cory Weeds and Zev Feldman for making "Westward Bound" available.
This week's Jazz Northwest includes a range of artists in both historical and recent recordings. Included is more music from the legendary "Jazz From The Penthouse" series featuring Harold Land leading a quartet with Hampton Hawes on piano. Ernestine Anderson, Jay Thomas, Walt Wagner, and contemporary groups Duende Libre and Xavier Lecouturier are also included. Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple, or Google.

The iconic jazz clubs in our countries history stretch from coast to coast. There was The Both/And and Jazz Workshop in SF. The London House in Chicago, Lennie's on the Turnpike in Boston and Smalls Paradise in Harlem. These clubs captured the essence of swing music, the lighting, the intimacy- that visceral feeling of collective unison between bandmates and their devoted patrons. Slowly though in the age of rock palaces and the switch from acoustic to electric instruments these clubs faded away. One though did not. It was in Southern California but not LA. You needed to drive out to the sandstone of Hermosa Beach to frequent this club and so many of the musicians from Henry the Skipper Franklin to Gene Perla to Kenny Burrell played at this venue. Cats like Buster Williams recorded with The Crusaders at this club - so did Elvin Jones and Grant Green and Joe Henderson. Others like Ramon Banda would come as a veritable kid to watch Mongo Santamaria. This club was the link from be-bop to post-bop. From Chet Baker to Sonny Rollins to Chico Hamilton. Loyalists, smack addicts playing three sets a night that left the audiences ears ringing as they headed out into the salty air of the Pacific. My guest today was the artistic director of the Lighthouse All-Stars. It Started with Teddy Edwards and Hampton Hawes, passed on to Shelly Manne and Shorty Rogers and continued with Bud Shank and Max Roach. The fusing of these groups coincided with Lester Koenigs Contemporary Record Label which gave identities to those who played melodic invention before the digital age. When improvisational swing began to fade in the early 1970s my guest took over Concerts by the Sea in Redondo Beach which carried on the traditions of the Lighthouse featuring Cal Tjader and Jim Horn, Woody Herman and Dizzy Gillespie. My guest was born in 1917, is an accomplished pianist in his own right playing on albums with the aforementioned Baker, Stan Kenton and Miles Davis. He has seen, heard, felt and contributed to our countries cultural heritage by giving opportunities to those who wanted to further the connection between the known and the unknown. When I began to interview my heroes in jazz I started my search in the time period I loved most, the early 1970s. The guys I have pursued; Martino, Ndugu, Upchurch and Maupin are individuals who were already established but hit their groove in the early seventies. They had their role models, Lloyd Price, Hampton Hawes, Eric Gale and Horace Silver but mat this point there was a clear passing of the torch. It was time for a youth movement. And this youth movement coincided with a cross current of musical blending, Afro awareness and a belief that they were all in it together.I give a lengthy intro because my guest deserves it. He has received multiple musical degrees from the Berkeley school of music and the New England Conservatory and wound up honing his chops in the studio doing everything from jingles to Christian rock. His comfortability and ease paved the way for him to become one of "the" session drummers from the early seventies working with Patrice Rushen, herbie Hancock, johnny Hammond smith, Donald Byrd, Carole King, Seals and Crofts and Earth Wind and Fire. He made his own albums on Arista and also is an underrated composer which I look forward to talking about with him. He is someone who has left a serious legacy and his affect will have a positive impact on future generations of percussionists. Harvey Mason welcome..... --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Hampton Hawes is a major piano stylist who rarely gets mentioned when piano giants come up in conversation. Hawes was widely admired by many including Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver, Andre Previn and others. Perhaps because Hawes was based for most part in his hometown of Los Angeles that maybe kept him out of the spotlight. Hawes was a major stylist with a very developed approach to the instrument and most were surprised that he was self taught and wasn't knowledgeable about theory and was not a great reader of music. He did have a photographic memory and could play anything he heard once. This is a fine date with Hawes' own trio with the great Red Mitchell on bass and Chuck Thompson on drums. Hawes runs through many great .standards and plays several of his own blues based original compositions. "Presenting Hampton Hawes" is a fine introduction to this major player.

This album gets it's rare status as it is often overlooked in the many recordings that bassist/composer Charles Mingus did. The main reason being is that it doesn't feature his Jazz Workshop ensemble but a piano trio with bass, piano and drums. Pianist Hampton Hawes who Mingus liked from his early days in Los Angeles was visiting New York and as Mingus had this record date booked with a hip Jazz loving producer, Mingus wished to do a trio album featuring Hampton Hawes. His wish was granted and the date took place on July 9,1957. Mingus is definitely the leader here but Hawes is the co-star. The tunes are varied between standards and Mingus originals as well as an exciting Hawes' tune. Dannie Richmond, Mingus' regular drummer gives sympathetic support throughout. Not only do we get superb performances from Hawes but also some great Mingus bass solos. "Mingus Three" is a unique and very special recording and deserves a more prominent place in the Mingus discography.
In this episode, I play and discuss a variety of avant garde jazz trios, from the more traditional piano/bass/drums trio work of Hampton Hawes, Jaki Byard, and Cecil Taylor, to more unusual combos like the Elvin Jones Trio, the Acoustic Guitar Trio, and more.
Michael Carvin's musical training began at age six with his father, one of the top drummers in Houston. By the age of twelve, Carvin began playing professionally and won what would be the first of five consecutive Texas rudimental championships. Joining Freddie Hubbard's band in 1973, Michael moved to New York where he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most formidable drummers on the jazz scene while working with Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Hank Jones, McCoy Tyner, Hampton Hawes, and singers Ruth Brown and Johnny Hartman. Michael has established himself as one of the world's most respected drum teachers and clinicians. The alumni of the Michael Carvin School of Drumming in New York are among the elite drummers in music today. carvin@gmail.com http://www.michaelcarvin.com Website Newsletter Become a Patron

In the 1950s, Hampton Hawes was the most exciting and technically gifted pianist in Los Angeles. Pianist and author Tim Richards guides Alyn Shipton through the highlights of Hawes' trio recordings made with the likes of saxophonist Art Pepper, works which are considered landmarks in the history of jazz piano. After a period in prison, Hawes emerged a changed man - Richards also selects the key recordings from his later more contemplative years.
