There are going to be a lot of tips, suggestions and survival posts about dealing with mental health problems the holidays. I don't normally do it because everyday to me is a struggle.  Some days it is very minor. Other days, it is a big deal.   And then there is navigating life problems during a time of enforced hypocritical joy and happiness.   The episode is about acknowledging the feelings. It is looking at what we can do even if there isn't anything we can do about the triggering situation.    Yes, I have "issues."   Here is the thing. They are my issues. I get to say to myself, "I am not feeling well. I don't like this. Corrections need to be made."   Long time listeners know that I have dental phobia. I have to go to the dentist. No choice. No wiggle room or discussion. That makes me more anxious.   I have to make decisions on how I need to do this that is safe for me. I have to let go of that which I cannot control.    I can control who does the treatment. Knowing my options. Is it right for me? If so, make that appointment. If not, keep looking.   I can be anxious and still reclaim my power. So, yeah. This episode is about doing what you can to reclaim your power. It has been 27 years since Bitten started her journey into food addiction, which she now calls “Sugar Addiction.” Over the years Bitten has had the good fortune to collaborate with many professionals and treat thousands of people worldwide. Through these collaborations, Bitten have developed a deep understanding of the brain disease addiction and she has developed a unique treatment method called Holistic Addiction Medicine. Bitten has trained many professionals in her native country and now it is time to bring Holistic Medicine for Addiction (HMA) to you. All addiction begins in the brain, regardless of the drug, so Bitten works with ASAM's definition of Addiction Interaction Disorder which aims to correct the dysfunctions of the brain's circuitry. In nursing school, Bitten learned that you suppress your appetite if you smoke. So that's why she started smoking. Then, Bitten became an alcoholic. Addiction is about the brain and how your brain reacts to substances. At age 33, Bitten fell in love with addiction medicine. Bitten knew that she was using ice cream and chocolate the same way she would use alcohol.   [13:00] Addiction Is All About What Is Happening In Your Brain You can be addicted to something with just small amounts. Addiction is all about what is going on in your brain. You don't have to eat a lot or drink a lot to be an addict. As time goes on, you will increase how much you are drinking or eating. Each drug that comes into your life, you become addicted to faster and faster.   [15:10] How To Identify Whether or Not Your Addiction Is Real There's a difference between harmful use and addiction. You need to figure out which one you have because there will be different treatments. Harmful users are emotional eaters. They eat when they are sad, happy, stressed, etc. There are all kinds of reasons why people will overeat. Ask a harmful user, “why?” There will be an answer. You can't ask “why” to addict because it's a primary illness; it doesn't have a cause. Instead, you need to ask addicts how you can help them. Some problems that addiction will cause: Eating alone Poor economy Poor health Poor relationships Mood swings Loss of energy   [28:45] How To Start Living a Ketogenic Lifestyle if You're An Addict The keto diet is the best diet for broken brains and for addicts. If you're having a hard time with sugar, natural sweeteners can be useful. However, anything sweet will be a trigger for addicts. Seeing things and smelling things are also triggers. Hello! Dr. L here, bringing you another episode of Mindful Living. Yessss, I am a day late. Happy Belated Thanksgiving! On this episode I bring you the acronym, PLEASE! PLEASE was originally an acronym for skills within Dr. Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I found an updated version of this acronym called PLEASED. Many scholars, psychologists and mental health professionals have since created updated versions of DBT and its tools and techniques. One such author is Lane Pederson, who wrote The Expanded Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Training Manual (Second Edition, 2017). In this version, PLEASED (yep, a D was added) stands for the following: P: Physical Health L: List resources and barriers E: Eat balanced meals A: Avoid drugs and alcohol S: Sleep between 7 and 10 hours E: Exercise for 20 to 60 minutes a few days per week D: Daily (Use PLEASED skills daily) I provide my definition and opinions for each letter of the acronym. Digestive issues (85.2%) Fatigue (60.4%) Overweight or obesity (54.6%) Brain fog (51.7%) Food allergies/sensitivities (50.2%) Mood issues (51.1%) Memory (48.1%) Joint pain (47.5%) Gluten sensitivities (42.2%) Insomnia (33.2%) Skin conditions 30.9% Hormonal problems (30.4%) Musculoskeletal pain (25.2%) Autoimmune disease (21.4%) Eczema (20.8%) Cardiovascular problems (high blood pressure) 19.8% And while this survey was conducted in a group that may be more sensitive to GMOs, I think it's important to acknowledge that GMOs do have health and environmental risks. I tried my best to explain my theory even though it's still in its infancy. It turned out to be a giant ball of rambling which in turn proved how real mood Magic is. Normally I do all of my mood altering techniques before I record to ensure I manifest the vibe I want to portray, today I did not. Today is the rawest episode I've ever released, honestly it's more of a collection of my ramblings and tangents about how our moods effect our crafts. In this Check Your Life podcast, Marni and Chris break down the real-life dating lessons from the most recent episode of the Bachelorette. Bachelorette Michelle is throwing out a lot of pink flags, and it has the guys confused. [1:35] The show starts off with Michelle's date with Martin. Marni finds Martin distracting and thinks he is trying very hard to make a statement with his image. A Stylist on the Life Check Yourself team says if your image shows up before you do, you are hiding in your clothes. People should notice you, not what you are wearing.  Your style should showcase you, not cover up who you are. Marni and Chris offer some tips for when you find yourself on a date with Mr. Try Hard. Basically, when dating IRL don't fall for a guy's potential! There is a chance Martin could change, but it is not likely. Marni and Chris agree he is a boy who is not ready to be engaged.   The Slumber Party [15:12] Viewers may never know if this group activity was designed to invoke drama but it sure seemed like it. The producers put the guys in silky pajamas but then in a masculine environment. Chris says it had to be staged. Someone knew the guys would not make a love connection because they were in battle mode due to all the testosterone in the room.  Michelle shows up and none of the guys pay attention to her. She obviously wanted more attention yet she didn't get involved she sat and sulked. She says she didn't feel seen. She scolds the guys for not giving her what she wanted which surprised them because she had not told them what she wanted. Marni says Michelle is a classic example of a woman who is extremely pretty and smart and should be super confident but something in her childhood left her insecure. She should speak to a life coach or therapist. When you feel small your vibe is small.    Let Your Feminine Energy Shine Through [29:39] Michelle displays a lot of masculine energy. She dresses very feminine to try and balance it out. Michelle is a basketball, tomboy-type girl yet the producers have her dressed in heels and ball gowns. It must be so confusing for the guys.  If a guy doesn't know where he stands or what you want he will do nothing.  Marni believes it is giving her the friendzone vibe which confuses the guys because they signed up to get engaged.
