SHOW NOTES:  On this show…we are dropping the negativity, the fear, and the anger as we adopt a kinder approach to ourselves and others. We are seeking the good, the possible, and even the impossible as we initiate a radical mood makeover. Tired of feeling frustrated, irritated, and helpless? Most of us are. Yet day after day we visit and revisit these feelings, staying stuck without a real plan forward. Unlike Cinderella, there is no Fairy Godmother standing ready to transform our lives or our attitudes with a wave of her wand. We have to dry our eyes, calm our nerves, and cool our jets to see what we're actually working with. You can't strive for better if you aren't sure where you're falling short. And wallowing in our melancholy mood is getting us nowhere. So, let's start there. What are your mind and body telling you and where might you be missing the message?  Your body might be saying, “Hey you, I'm tired and I need a little more rest to perform at the level at which you are pushing our life's pace.” But outside influences say - there is plenty of time to rest when you're dead. Your mind might be saying, “Ouch, I'm getting bogged down with all this conflicting information and super anxious bu the tone!” But outside influences tell you - you HAVE to stay informed or you can't get involved. It's up to you to fix it!  As a result of this constant struggle, you feel behind and anxious about catching up. Wonder where your bad mood comes from? I'm not sure but it sounds like we're on the right track. And if you don't know, should you look for the answers? Let me remind you, no one is going to do it for you. There isn't a happy clown to visit when you feel blue or a water boy to ice you down when you're angry, and if there was a warm hug at ready when you're having a bad day - I would know about it! Did I mention the journey to self-discovery is essentially a solo mission? Oh sure, you have plenty of help along the way but it takes your foot on the gas to continue forward.  So I want to know more about these moods, where they come from, and what can I do to get to the source of the irritant, overcome it, and get back on my journey. It's hard to expect peak performance when you have sludge in your engine, right? Mamta Sharma gets us started with an Instant Mood Makeover – How to Change Mental State in Under 5 Minutes The Better Health Channel gives us more ideas on Monitoring your mood. "Thanks for your purchase! Can we get your feedback!?"  We are asked for our feedback left and right. We're also giving it unknowingly more often than we think.  When it comes to receiving it, why can it sometimes be so difficult? Of course, we all WANT feedback to do better, grow, and be the best humans we can be... but at the same time, wouldn't it be nice if someone could just pat us on the back and tell us, "All good!"?  Maybe if they just delivered it the bad news to us sandwiched between all the positive stuff (the Oreo cookie technique)?  Today's guest, Sheila Heen will share the unique difficulty around receiving feedback; why this conversation can be so difficult whether you're a giver of it or a receiver.  We dive into:  What are the different types of feedback are: Appreciation, Coaching, Evaluation, and what each form might look like Why giving feedback can be difficult and getting it can be even harder! The three triggers around feedback that can make us shut down How to get better at receiving feedback by leaning into curiosity  What to do if you're naturally more sensitive to feedback  What to do if you just don't want it in a certain area or from a certain person Why we need to RE-THINK the Oreo cookie feedback-giving technique And MORE!  Links Mentioned:  Sheila's Book: Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well (Even When It's Off-Base, Unfair, Poorly Delivered, and Frankly, You're Not in the Mood) (with Douglas Stone, Viking/Penguin 2014) Sheila's Website She Built This Website About Sheila  Sheila is a Founder of Triad Consulting, a Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School, and serves as a Deputy Director of the Harvard Negotiation Project, where she has been developing negotiation theory and practice since 1995.   Sheila's corporate clients have included Pixar, Hugo Boss, the NBA, the Federal Reserve Bank, Ford, Novartis, Converse, American Express, and numerous family businesses. She often works with executive teams, helping them to work through conflict, repair working relationships and make sound decisions together. In the public sector she has also provided training for the New England Organ Bank, the Singapore Supreme Court, the Obama and Biden White Houses and theologians struggling with disagreement over the nature of truth and God. Sheila specializes in particularly difficult negotiations – where emotions run high and relationships are strained.  She is also a co-author of two New York Times bestsellers:  Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most (with Douglas Stone and Bruce Patton, 2nd ed Penguin 2010) and Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well (Even When It's Off-Base, Unfair, Poorly Delivered, and Frankly, You're Not in the Mood) (with Douglas Stone, Viking/Penguin 2014).  She has written for the Harvard Business Review and for the New York Times as a guest expert and as a Modern Love columnist.   Sheila and her co-authors are working on a 3rd edition of Difficult Conversations with updates and revisions, which will be released in 2022. Sheila is a frequent media guest and has appeared on shows as diverse as Oprah, NPR, Fox News, and CNBC's Power Lunch.   She can be heard on podcast episodes of Shane Parrish's Knowledge Project, Adam Grant's WorkLife, Hidden Brain, and The Tim Ferriss Show.  She has spoken at the Global Leadership Summit, the Nordic Business Forum, at The Smithsonian, Apple, Google, Microsoft and at the U.S. Air Force Academy.  She got to fly along on a training mission in an F-16 while working with the Air Force to improve feedback to pilots in training. "You notice a lot of things if you look."  So says Maggie Cheung in Kar-Wei Wong's fascinating In the Mood for Love (2000).  Mike and Dan notice many things about this terrific film, such as how it presents adultery in a way that surprises audiences used to seeing it as a plot device or a reward for a character's misery--as in The Bridges of Madison County.  How the film suggests adultery as a terrible fact and a fact that two star-crossed lovers respect, despite their anguish, is what makes it so compelling.  The Apartment, Body Heat, Double Indemnity, The Scarlet Letter, Walden, and even Moby-Dick all enter the conversation in this extended episode.  So grab that Thermos, fill it with noodles, and give it a listen! Lower mood and anxiety have been linked to increased binge eating and decreased control of cravings. When you feel sad, frustrated, or angry, you want to take your mind off things that trigger negative feelings. Using food to soothe and ease unpleasant emotions is a short-term solution that often leads to even more regret and guilt. Want to stop binge eating, live your life with less stress, healthier relationships, and a better quality of life? Discover how becoming aware of your moods and the power of your thoughts can transform your life! In today's podcast episode, I want to share with you the concept of Mood Elevator, a simple tool that I effectively use to explain the relationship between mood and unhelpful habits like binge eating. I'll discuss how our thinking creates our mood, the characteristics of the higher and lower mood states, and how to spend more time on the higher floors of the Mood Elevator and limit the damage you do to yourself and others when you drop down to the lower floors. Our podcast guest, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Louann Brizendine, joins us on the Switch4Good podcast to talk about why males and females communicate and process emotions differently. In this episode, Dr. Louann talks to Dotsie and Alexandra about her books, The Male Brain and The Female Brain, and how they have helped readers navigate relationships with their partners, spouses, friends, and family members around the world. Dr. Brizendine founded the Woman's Mood and Hormone Clinic at UCSF, and then went on to write another book called The Upgrade, which explains how the female brain gets “upgraded” in midlife. She believes that this time in a female's life brings more clarity and a laser-like sense of purpose if you know how to tap into it.  Join us today to discuss how to harness that new “upgraded” brain power, and navigate relationships with life-long partners, hormones, depression, menopause, and more.  “There is a 2:1 ratio when it comes to depression in women over men. And I felt like, that is not fair. What is up with that? Then I realized, that in childhood, the depression ratio is only 1:1, male to female. At age 13 or 14, it goes up in females. The menstrual cycle starts, and the hormones start.”  - Dr. Louann Brizendine   What we discuss in this episode:   - Dotsie reads an excerpt from her book about falling in love with her husband    - The main differences in male and female brains   - How hormones impact males and females differently    - How one person can't fulfill all of our needs   - How our expectations, unchecked, can hurt our partners    - Why females are twice as likely to be depressed    - Why menopause and post-menopause can be a transformative time in your life   - Why men are hesitant to live vegan    - Learn more about “The Upgrade” - https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/591607/the-upgrade-by-louann-brizendine-md/   - Dr. Brizendine's website - https://www.louannbrizendine.com/   Connect with Switch4Good   - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg   - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/   - Podcast Chat Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastchat/   - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/   - Twitter - https://mobile.twitter.com/Switch4GoodNFT    - Website - https://switch4good.org/   - Use code SWITCH for 25% off your order at MaxinesHeavenly.com   - Purality B12 Deal: https://puralityhealth.com/liposomal-b12/ to buy one B12 and get one free plus 35% off the rest of Purality's products.

From Simone Biles' brush with the twisties to Rick Ankiel's experience of the yips, the constellation of phenomena known as the yips–and the stories of the athletes who experience it–are some of the strangest in the world of sports. Far more common, but perhaps equally opaque, are mood disorders like depression and anxiety, and on this episode of Losing Control, host Justin Su'a talks with Karen Swartz, a clinical psychiatrist who specializes in mood disorders and community education. Mood disorders destabilize confidence, shift the relationship with the things we care about the most, and impact how we see ourselves–just like the yips–and in the second half of the episode, retired Major Leaguer Rick Ankiel reflects on the yips, mental health, and how his experiences in baseball have shaped his relationship to sports, and to life. The key to healing your gut is understanding the root cause of the symptoms contributing to your gut issues. Bloating, gas, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, skin issues, and even food sensitivities, are accepted as the norm in today's society. In fact, many people put up with these uncomfortable symptoms for most of their lives without understanding why they are there. The truth is that the presence of these symptoms is your body's way of communicating to you that there is a deeper issue. However, there are ways that you can take control of the health of your gut, so that you can thrive and heal from health challenges such as leaky gut, IBS, autoimmune disease, and even depression, anxiety, and low mood. Our guest was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and began playing guitar at 10 years old. After dropping out of NYU to return to Los Angeles, he began working full time on music.
