    There's a new Niles in the world. Joshua Benedict Rex was born this week, and Dave wants you to know how stressful it all was. For the dad, that is. The pressure. The anxiety. All those things. None of which come to mind right now. Joke's on Dave, though, because Lady Pamela got to the birth center, the midwife offered to break her water, and Joshua arrived eleven minutes later. That's boy number three, bringing the count to three boys and four girls. Adam got the "we're going in" text at the hospital, stopped to pray, and barely beat the birth. The baby's a content little guy. A stereotypical Niles baby, the spitting image of baby Davy. Baptism's in a couple weeks with Uncle Father Sean, godparents are Sarah and Drew, and somewhere in there is a real theology question the guys throw to the priests who listen: can you name godparents after the fact for a baby baptized in a rush? Asking for a Mary.That birth set the whole table. Every time a baby comes into this circle of friends, the men pull their money, buy one nicer bottle of whiskey, sign it with the kid's name, and drink it together. They call it the "baby bottles" tradition. It blends friends into family. And it's exactly the kind of gift that makes you grateful, which is what this whole episode is about.They're recording on a Friday, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, the same day the bishops of America consecrated the entire country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The pour is Glendalough, a pot still Irish whiskey the guys actually visited on pilgrimage. Triple distilled by law, smooth, no burn, and oddly cheap. God pours, the man doesn't return thanks, the flow stops.The hardest, most masculine turn in the episode is receiving. Men hate it. I don't need your charity. I can carry this cross. But refusing a gift graciously offered isn't humility. It's a wall. Adam's lived on the receiving end through Mary's time in the NICU, and he's learned the Christian paradox: the more graciously indebted you are, the richer your life, because the score is never even. Today, we're going to be talking about how to overcome the lasting damage of trauma through God's word. Quotables from the episode: Trauma is not the event. Trauma is the chronic reaction to that event. Trauma is ongoing. An event can happen and then it can be in your past. You may never forget it, but it no longer identifies you. And it no longer points the direction that you should go, whether life or death. The first emotion that somebody faces after a traumatic event is fear. Fear leads to anxiety. Anxiety leads to mood swings. Mood swings will lead you into isolation. Isolation brings the worst. It brings hopelessness. And it brings despair, and loss of purpose. The truth is what heals. God does not heal deceit. He heals truth. The one word for parents to pass a heritage to their children their faith, is intentionality. Just do something. Don't think it can be done by accident. Be intentional. The trauma of the unknown is, I think, the most garden variety trauma you can have. Don't leave out the spiritual because there is a God who loves you and he is a God of hope. God knows us so intimately that he knows what we need and willingly provides it. God says, come to me if you're heavy laden. I'll give you rest. He didn't say I'll rescue you. He's not going to rescue you. But he's going to give you a place of rest.     Some days just suck and that’s okay. Here’s what you can do about it with simple these mood elevators. There will be times when a bad mood hangs around. Maybe something triggered you. It could be a cloudy day when you counted on sunshine. Or you might feel crummy or no reason at all. You just feel off. The truth is there’s likely nothing truly wrong. You’ve had too much stress, too much news, too many demands. You haven’t had enough downtime or sleep. You’re overdue for some self-care. The good news? You don’t need therapy, a silent meditation retreat, or an appointment of any kind to feel more at peace. These five simple mood elevators are free, fast, and surprisingly powerful. I’m sharing them today because honestly, I’ve been in a mood myself for a few days and putting this together for you has already lifted my spirits. 1. Start Moving One of the fastest ways to lift your mood is to move your body, even for just a couple of minutes. Go outside, especially if it’s sunny. Fresh air and natural light work quickly to shift your emotional state. But even a rainy day has its benefits. Rain actually reduces an overabundance of positive ions that are absorbed from electronics and screens. Walking in the rain, taking a shower, or spending time near moving water like a stream or the ocean helps clear that energetic overload. Other easy options: Put on your favorite music and dance around the room for three minutes Take a short walk around the block Do a few minutes of stretching Try just three yoga poses Get physical, even briefly, and watch how quickly things start to shift 2. Stop Arguing with Reality When you’re in a bad mood, your mind can drift to unhappy thoughts. Then you might think you shouldn’t feel this way. Or other people have it worse and even things aren’t really that bad. But pushing your feelings away doesn’t make them go away. It suppresses them, and that’s not good for your emotional health long-term. The faster path to feeling more at peace is actually to own what you’re feeling. Face it. Accept it. Don’t make yourself wrong for it. When you acknowledge your feelings, even the uncomfortable ones, that’s often the quickest way to move through them and come out the other side. 3. Find One Tiny Thing Going Your Way Okay, this might feel difficult, but the truth is EVERYTHING is not bad. Even on your worst days, something is working in your favor. You don’t need to drag out you gratitude journal or make a list of 20 things. Just noticing one positive thing will be a solid mood elevator. Did you eat a good lunch? Find something on sale? Pay your bills and have a little left over? Hit a string of green lights? (One of my personal favorites!) These tiny moments count. I’ll share one that happened to me just yesterday. A client I coached a few years ago texted to say he got engaged. He was a sweet guy who struggled with social anxiety around dating, and we worked together to find some simple solutions. He sent me their happy engagement photo and said it wouldn’t have happened without me. I left him the most choked-up voicemail. That moment brought me completely to tears in the best heart-filled way. Finding even one thing that’s going your way shifts your brain out of fight or flight mode and into a place of greater peace and joy. Try it right now. 4. Call a Funny Friend As I was sitting down to write this episode, my phone rang. It was my friend Tammy. She has this gift for finding the humor in everything. We ended up reminiscing about our 20s, when we’d get together every Thursday night to listen to new music and dance in my living room. Laughing with someone who knows you well is one of the most a powerful mood elevators. If you have a friend with a good sense of humor, call her. Tell her your moody little story. Find the humor in it together. Nostalgia is genuinely uplifting. That’s why people love a good stroll down memory lane. Childhood stories, old shared jokes, funny memories are all good stuff, and can absolutely raise your spirits. Who could you call right now? 5. Create a Moment of Delight This is a fun one. What’s one small, easy thing that’s guaranteed to bring a little joy back into your day? Here’s mine – mascara. I stopped wearing mascara during COVID. Who was I going to see? But this year I started putting it on again every single day, just for me. When I catch myself in the mirror now, I smile. Those long dark lashes make me feel pretty and more youthful. That’s a genuine moment of delight, and it costs almost nothing. Here’s another one. I recently discovered a brand of sugar-free chocolate made with allulose that tastes just like the real thing. Try this: This is a three-minute practice. Close your eyes and imagine sending roots down from the soles of your feet, deep into the earth. Connect with the soil, stones,  plants, and all the creatures. Acknowledge the four directions and all the elements. Say hello to the nature spirits. Thank Mother Earth for giving you a home for this life. Then take three slow, deep breaths. With each inhale, draw earth energy back up through those roots, up through your feet, and into your body. Draw the energy all the way up through the top of your head. As that energy rises, picture each of your chakras lighting up in sequence from root to crown. Notice how you feel afterward. This simple practice can open your energy field, deepen your breathing, and calm your nervous system. It can help you feel genuinely connected again. Start small. Move  your body, accept how you’re feeling without judgment, or find one tiny thing going your way. You might reach out to someone who makes you laugh, treat yourself to one small moment of delight, or take a few slow deep breaths. You don’t need to do all six. Even one can begin to shift your mood. Now you know that feeling moody from time to time is part of being human. And, the good news is that you have more tools than you might think to feel more at peace and most of them are easy and already within reach. Step 1: Upsetting Event / Moment Identify one specific moment in time (not a general problem). Include details: Where were you? Who was there? What exactly happened? Common Mistakes: ❌ Being too vague: "My life is a mess" ❌ Writing thoughts instead of events: "I'm not good enough" ❌ Describing ongoing situations instead of a moment Example: ✔️ "At 3pm today, my boss criticized my report in a meeting."     As people live longer, maintaining mental well-being has become an increasingly important part of healthy aging. While regular physical activity is known to support both physical and psychological health, many older adults face barriers that make traditional exercise programs difficult to sustain. Researchers have therefore been exploring new approaches that combine physical activity with enjoyment, social interaction, and cognitive engagement. A review published in Volume 18 of Aging titled “What are the effects of exergames on the mood states of older people? A systematic review of experimental studies, impacts on mental health and recommendations,” examined whether exergames—video games that require physical movement to play—can improve mood and mental health in older adults. Shows like Ricki Lake, Jenny Jones, and the notoriously scandalous Jerry Springer were a guilty pleasure for anyone craving peak drama.  Guests on these shows were encouraged to be loud, explosive, obscene, shocking, and even physically violent. The more over-the-top they were, the better the ratings. The Jerry Springer Show, which made its debut in 1991, featured themes that were among the most controversial. From white supremacists to eccentrics married to farm animals, watching Jerry Springer was like seeing a tabloid magazine come to life. Christian advocacy groups and media watchdogs claimed the show was destroying America. Maybe Jerry Springer marked the end of a more wholesome era of television, but it wasn't as serious as life or death. Except it was for 52-year-old Nancy Campbell.     There is a village in the apple country of western New York called Sodus, up in Wayne County near the south shore of Lake Ontario, about thirty miles east of Rochester. This is fruit-belt land, orchard and muck field running back from the lake, roadside stands selling cider in the fall, the big cold lake holding the frost off the trees in spring. In October the orchards go heavy and the light comes in low and gold across the drumlins, the long humped hills the glaciers left behind. A few thousand people, one central school the whole area feeds into, the worst trouble in a given year usually a bad wreck out on Route 14. The kind of place where a double murder in a driveway on a sunny Monday afternoon does not just grieve people, it cracks the basic understanding they have about where they live.On the twenty-second of October, 2018, a Monday, that understanding broke. It broke on a short residential street called Carlton Street, a block of modest houses near the Sodus Central School, the kind of street where people leave the doors unlocked and the kids ride bikes in the road. At a little after three in the afternoon, in full daylight, with neighbors home and children about, a young couple was shot to death in the driveway of their own home. Episode 9 covers California and Alabama — two cases, two communities that looked at the legal system and reached for something uglier. October 10, 1890. A woman named Helen Riche is playing cards in her tavern near a California quicksilver mine when ten men in flour-sack hoods crash through the door. She does not run. She reaches up and rips the mask off the nearest man's face, and in that single act she solves the crime that is about to kill her. This is true crime history from the American frontier, and the legal system that followed would leave you cold.December 1888, Birmingham, Alabama. A railroad engineer named Richard Hawes boards a streetcar with his eight- year-old daughter May. He gets off with her at East Lake. He gets back on alone. The body of a young girl is found floating in the lake the next morning. On the same day, Hawes is across the state line getting married. When Birmingham finds out, two thousand people march on the jail.The VictimsHelen Matilda Riche ran the Campers' Retreat tavern on sixty-two acres near the Bradford quicksilver mine, three miles south of Middletown, California. We do not know where she was born or how she came to run a mining-camp saloon in hard hill country — the historical record is thin on her life before October 10, 1890. What it preserves is a woman who managed a clientele of mercury miners in one of the most physically dangerous industries of the era. She was shot five times during the raid. She fought back, reaching for her husband's .44 Winchester with five bullets already in her body. She died four days later. Her husband J.W. Riche died less than three months after her, his own bullet wound never having healed.May Hawes was eight years old when her father took her on a one-way train ride to East Lake on the evening of December 3, 1888. She had been doing the work of a parent since she could walk, looking after younger siblings in a household already coming apart. She was laid out for public identification at Lockwood & Miller's Funeral Parlor in Birmingham, unidentified for a full day. A local butcher recognized her. May, her mother Emma, and her six-year-old sister Irene — all three murdered by Richard Hawes — lay in an unmarked grave at Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham for more than 135 years. In April 2024, they finally received a headstone.The CrimesThe Lake County White Cap raid followed personal grudges that had been tightening for months. Blackburn, a mine foreman, had been thrown out of the Campers' Retreat after a brawl with the bartender Fred Bennett. Others in the group had boundary disputes, cattle quarrels, neighborhood debts to settle. They put flour sacks over their heads and called it a community morality action — the Whitecapping movement had spread from Indiana through the Southern states and into California by 1890. The plan was to flog Bennett and run him to the county line. Helen Riche unmasked Henry Arkarro the moment the men crashed through the door, and the plan collapsed into gunfire.Richard Hawes murdered three members of his own family to clear the way for a new marriage. Emma and Irene Hawes were found bound with curtain cord and weighted with railroad iron curve-braces in a Birmingham lake on December 8, 1888 — the same day a mob of approximately 2,000 people converged on the Jefferson County Jail demanding to hang him on the spot. Sheriff Joseph S. Smith fired into the crowd. Ten men were killed. Approximately thirty were wounded. The historical murder case that followed Hawes would take fourteen more months and a formal trial to reach the same conclusion the mob wanted.The Investigations and Legal OutcomesIn California, ten men were arrested within days. The mining community was small; Helen Riche had identified one attacker herself. The trial opened February 6, 1891, in Lakeport — *People of the State of California v. B.F. Staley et al.* Four men were convicted of second-degree murder: Blackburn sentenced to twenty-five years, Staley and Cradwick to twenty years each, Osgood to twelve years. All four were released from San Quentin within approximately three years. The Governor had commuted Blackburn's sentence to ten years following an extensive lobbying campaign. Three years, for a home invasion that killed two people.In Alabama, Richard Hawes was tried beginning April 22, 1889, before Judge Samuel Greene. The prosecution built the case around May's murder — the strongest evidence available, though entirely circumstantial: eyewitness testimony placing father and daughter on the streetcar together, and only the father returning. The jury deliberated fifty-five minutes. Death. After multiple appeals to the Alabama Supreme Court, all denied, Richard Hawes was hanged by Sheriff Smith on February 28, 1890 — the same man who had fired into a crowd to keep him alive for this moment. Hawes wore a geranium in his lapel. The gallows were built by a man who had served on his jury.Historical ContextBoth cases sit at a specific American intersection: communities losing faith in institutional justice and reaching for extralegal violence, with consequences that fell hardest on people who had nothing to do with the original grievance. The Whitecapping movement was already documented across Indiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi before it reached California. In Alabama, the Birmingham riot of 1888 killed ten bystanders, including Maurice Throckmorton, thirty-three, the city's postmaster, who was reportedly trying to calm the crowd when he was shot. The legal system delivered the outcome the mob demanded — it just took fourteen months and cost ten additional lives to get there.California's legislature responded to the broader wave of hooded vigilantism during this period with enhanced anti- vigilante and anti-mask statutes. For the Hawes case, Fannie Bryant — the family's cook and a key witness for the prosecution — was herself sentenced to death for allegedly aiding Hawes. She died in a prison riot before the sentence could be carried out. Her actual level of involvement remains contested.
