    From the Depression to the iPhone When Mary Williams forgets something important about one of her countless life stories, it isn't a problem: She consults her laptop. Born on May 13, 1926, she's been writing detailed accounts of her life for at least 80 years, from surviving hurricanes and losing her hair on a drill press, to working as an operator for AT&T ("Ma Bell") and traveling the world. She moved to Cold Spring 10 years ago to be closer to her daughter, Galelyn Williams, who lives in the village. She grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, during the Depression and remembers the era vividly. "I was kind of a naughty child," she said, recalling that she started smoking at age 11. "No one had any money, but it was OK because families were more tribal, people were more connected and helped each other out," she recalled. "There wasn't a lot of envy, because no one had anything. Everybody was about the same." Jobs were scarce. Her father worked for the Works Progress Administration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's employment and infrastructure program. Her mother was unable to work but volunteered at Pawtucket City Hall. "We ate hot dogs and whatever we could get ahold of," Williams said, adding that her mom "wasn't much of a cook" but did occasionally prepare a leg of lamb, which at 10 to 15 cents a pound was cheaper than beef or pork. "Everybody was poor — some were dirt poor — but we managed," she said. Their rent was covered by a form of welfare. In 1936, a hurricane devastated the area, killing 600 people, especially close to shore. "It was a bugger; there were no warnings back then," Williams said. "On one little island, the waves wiped all the houses right off the map." She attended a strict Catholic grade school, "an education of thou shall nots." As a teen, she moved to nearby Oakland Beach, where roller skating was the popular entertainment. She and her friends sometimes scraped barnacles off the bottom of rowboats to earn enough to cover the 30-cent entrance fee. "We stayed friends all our lives," she said. Williams remembers skating to her favorite song, the Glenn Miller Orchestra performing "In the Mood." "There was so much good music, couples always had 'their song,' " she said. "It was romantic, gentle music and easy to skate to." She had her first date, at age 15, at the roller rink, with a guy named Louie. "It was the first time a guy kissed me," she said, adding that Louie was quite upset when she told him she didn't like him. She quit school in 10th grade after her father fell ill to work and help her mother raise her younger brother. "My first job was at Sammy Salk's General Store," she said. "I worked six days a week for a total of $15. I could buy enough food with that." She knew many young men who went off to fight in World War II, not all of whom returned. "So many, so many," she recalled. The war meant factory work. "I had a bunch of jobs, including working on a drill press," she said. She once lost half of her hair when it caught in the press. She also worked in a shipyard and took on a second job at a soda fountain. While it was a difficult time to be a teenager, she remembers how the nation unified. "We were together as a country during World War II," she said. "But we've done nothing but fight wars since. That's all we do now, bomb people." Not one to mince words, she said she has "lived through 17 U.S. presidents and one stupid SOB." In 1946, she bought a 1938 Cadillac and a trailer and headed to the West Coast with a friend. "It was a pimp car, and it took us 13 days," she said with a laugh. She kept detailed notes along the 2,448 miles of Route 66 and described California as "America's best kept secret" at the time. Williams was working for AT&T in Rhode Island and transferred to California, staying with the company for 35 years as a telephone operator.     There is a village in the apple country of western New York called Sodus, up in Wayne County near the south shore of Lake Ontario, about thirty miles east of Rochester. This is fruit-belt land, orchard and muck field running back from the lake, roadside stands selling cider in the fall, the big cold lake holding the frost off the trees in spring. In October the orchards go heavy and the light comes in low and gold across the drumlins, the long humped hills the glaciers left behind. A few thousand people, one central school the whole area feeds into, the worst trouble in a given year usually a bad wreck out on Route 14. The kind of place where a double murder in a driveway on a sunny Monday afternoon does not just grieve people, it cracks the basic understanding they have about where they live.On the twenty-second of October, 2018, a Monday, that understanding broke. It broke on a short residential street called Carlton Street, a block of modest houses near the Sodus Central School, the kind of street where people leave the doors unlocked and the kids ride bikes in the road. At a little after three in the afternoon, in full daylight, with neighbors home and children about, a young couple was shot to death in the driveway of their own home.     Als Kind kam Anu Sivaganesan aus Sri Lanka in die Schweiz. Mit 14 Jahren gründete sie die «Fachstelle Zwangsheirat», die sie bis heute leitet. Ihr ehrenamtliches Engagement findet sie selbstverständlich: «Ich komme aus einer Kultur, in der es nicht nur Menschenrechte gibt, sondern auch Pflichten.» Anu Sivaganesan kann sich noch gut an ihre kalten Füsse erinnern, als sie im November 1999 in der Schweiz ankam: «Ich kaufte mir zuerst einmal hässliche, warme Winterschuhe», erzählt sie und lacht. Dabei fiel es ihr nicht leicht, Sri Lanka zu verlassen. Sie habe dort eine glückliche Kindheit gehabt, obwohl ihr Vater wegen des Bürgerkriegs fliehen musste, als sie zwei Jahre alt war. Erst zehn Jahre später wurde die Familie in der Schweiz wieder vereint. Anu Sivaganesan lernte schnell Deutsch und engagierte sich, zusammen mit ihrem Bruder, in Vereinen und Kommissionen für Menschenrechte. Seit 25 Jahren leitet die Juristin nun schon die «Fachstelle Zwangsheirat». Für ihre Dissertation zu dieser Thematik erhielt sie kürzlich eine Auszeichnung der Schweizerischen Vereinigung für Internationales Recht. It's your body.”— Dr. Jacqueline RiedelThe doctor who finally has time for youDr. Jacqueline Riedel, DO spent 15 years in family medicine where she learned this: women's hormonal health in midlife was profoundly under-treated and misunderstood. In a busy hospital-based clinic, she'd start a long-overdue conversation with a patient about perimenopause symptoms… and have to cut it off because the schedule demanded it.So she left. She opened Magnolia Midlife Women's Health, a direct-care practice built on something simple but radical: unhurried, conversational visits where women can actually ask their questions, get real answers, and leave feeling seen.In this conversation, she covers what's really happening hormonally in your 30s, 40s, and 50s and why everything you were told to fear about hormone therapy probably isn't the full story.Perimenopause starts earlier than you thinkDr. Riedel sees women with perimenopause symptoms long before any changes in the menstrual cycle. If you've been dismissed, or told your symptoms are just stress or mom-brain, you're not alone. Symptoms she commonly sees:• New insomnia: can't fall asleep or waking for no apparent reason• Anxiety, often misread as “just life stress”• Persistent, unexplained fatigue• Hot flashes and night sweats• Mood changes including irritability, low mood, brain fog• Cycle irregularities such as heavier periods, irregular timingDr. Riedel's approach: map symptoms to your cycle. When do they happen? Are there patterns? She also rules out other common causes, including thyroid issues and iron deficiency before exploring hormone therapy as an option.MYTH BUSTINGThe fears holding women back from reliefTwo decades after the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study was misread and sensationalized, fear still dominates the conversation around hormone therapy. Dr. Riedel sets the record straight.Myth 1: Hormone therapy causes breast cancer.Fact: Long-term WHI follow-up showed women in the hormone treatment group had lower rates of breast cancer. Even a first-degree family history is not a contraindication. And if breast cancer does occur in someone using MHT, their risk of dying is actually lower than in those not using it.Myth 2: The doses in MHT are dangerously high.Fact: Menopausal hormone therapy doses are far lower than those in oral contraceptive pills. If you'd prescribe the pill, you can't logically call MHT dangerous.Myth 3: Vaginal estrogen has systemic effects and should be avoided in cancer history.Fact: Topical vaginal estrogen has negligible systemic absorption. It reduces UTIs, yeast infections, urinary frequency, and pelvic floor dysfunction, even in women under active breast cancer treatment, per emerging oncology research. The FDA recently removed the black-box warning.TREATMENT OVERVIEWHow Dr. Riedel approaches careThere's no single protocol. Dr. Riedel listens first, identifying the top two or three symptoms most affecting quality of life, and builds from there.Progesterone for sleep & anxiety• Stimulates GABA production, a calming neurotransmitter• Helps with sleep onset and staying asleep• Reduces the racing mind at 2am• Often the first place she startsEstrogen for vasomotor symptoms• Addresses night sweats, hot flashes, palpitations• Keeps estrogen levels from dropping to “empty”• Preferred as transdermal (patch, gel, spray) to avoid blood clot risk• Added when progesterone alone isn't enoughVaginal estrogen for urogenital health• Reduces painful intercourse and dryness• Decreases UTIs and yeast infections• Supports pelvic floor health long-term• About 50% of women need this even on systemic estrogenNon-hormonal options when hormones aren't right• Newer medications targeting particular neurons in the hypothalamus (hot flash regulation)Things you can do and questions to askDr. Riedel's conversation offers practical starting points for women navigating this transition on their own or with a provider.01. Track your symptoms in relation to your cycleSleep disruption, anxiety, and mood changes that follow a cyclic pattern are often hormonal in origin. Note when in your cycle you feel worst because this information is gold for any provider visit.02. Ask your doctor to rule out thyroid and iron firstFatigue, brain fog, and sleep issues can also come from iron deficiency or thyroid dysfunction. Simple labs can clarify what you're actually dealing with before hormones enter the picture.03. Reconsider what's in your sleep toolkitAlcohol before bed worsens sleep, hot flashes, and anxiety, even though it feels like it helps. Benadryl/ZQuil, Ambien, and benzodiazepines disrupt true sleep architecture. CBT for insomnia has strong evidence and virtually zero side effects. 06. Consider this a second puberty — not a declineMidlife is a genuine developmental threshold. We do not know where she was born or how she came to run a mining-camp saloon in hard hill country — the historical record is thin on her life before October 10, 1890. What it preserves is a woman who managed a clientele of mercury miners in one of the most physically dangerous industries of the era. She was shot five times during the raid. She fought back, reaching for her husband's .44 Winchester with five bullets already in her body. She died four days later. Her husband J.W. Riche died less than three months after her, his own bullet wound never having healed.May Hawes was eight years old when her father took her on a one-way train ride to East Lake on the evening of December 3, 1888. She had been doing the work of a parent since she could walk, looking after younger siblings in a household already coming apart. She was laid out for public identification at Lockwood & Miller's Funeral Parlor in Birmingham, unidentified for a full day. A local butcher recognized her. May, her mother Emma, and her six-year-old sister Irene — all three murdered by Richard Hawes — lay in an unmarked grave at Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham for more than 135 years. In April 2024, they finally received a headstone.The CrimesThe Lake County White Cap raid followed personal grudges that had been tightening for months. Blackburn, a mine foreman, had been thrown out of the Campers' Retreat after a brawl with the bartender Fred Bennett. Others in the group had boundary disputes, cattle quarrels, neighborhood debts to settle. They put flour sacks over their heads and called it a community morality action — the Whitecapping movement had spread from Indiana through the Southern states and into California by 1890. The plan was to flog Bennett and run him to the county line. Helen Riche unmasked Henry Arkarro the moment the men crashed through the door, and the plan collapsed into gunfire.Richard Hawes murdered three members of his own family to clear the way for a new marriage. Emma and Irene Hawes were found bound with curtain cord and weighted with railroad iron curve-braces in a Birmingham lake on December 8, 1888 — the same day a mob of approximately 2,000 people converged on the Jefferson County Jail demanding to hang him on the spot. Sheriff Joseph S. Smith fired into the crowd. Ten men were killed. Approximately thirty were wounded. The historical murder case that followed Hawes would take fourteen more months and a formal trial to reach the same conclusion the mob wanted.The Investigations and Legal OutcomesIn California, ten men were arrested within days. The mining community was small; Helen Riche had identified one attacker herself. The trial opened February 6, 1891, in Lakeport — *People of the State of California v. B.F. Staley et al.* Four men were convicted of second-degree murder: Blackburn sentenced to twenty-five years, Staley and Cradwick to twenty years each, Osgood to twelve years. All four were released from San Quentin within approximately three years. The Governor had commuted Blackburn's sentence to ten years following an extensive lobbying campaign. Three years, for a home invasion that killed two people.In Alabama, Richard Hawes was tried beginning April 22, 1889, before Judge Samuel Greene. The prosecution built the case around May's murder — the strongest evidence available, though entirely circumstantial: eyewitness testimony placing father and daughter on the streetcar together, and only the father returning. The jury deliberated fifty-five minutes. Death. After multiple appeals to the Alabama Supreme Court, all denied, Richard Hawes was hanged by Sheriff Smith on February 28, 1890 — the same man who had fired into a crowd to keep him alive for this moment. Hawes wore a geranium in his lapel. The gallows were built by a man who had served on his jury.Historical ContextBoth cases sit at a specific American intersection: communities losing faith in institutional justice and reaching for extralegal violence, with consequences that fell hardest on people who had nothing to do with the original grievance. The Whitecapping movement was already documented across Indiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi before it reached California. In Alabama, the Birmingham riot of 1888 killed ten bystanders, including Maurice Throckmorton, thirty-three, the city's postmaster, who was reportedly trying to calm the crowd when he was shot. The legal system delivered the outcome the mob demanded — it just took fourteen months and cost ten additional lives to get there.California's legislature responded to the broader wave of hooded vigilantism during this period with enhanced anti- vigilante and anti-mask statutes. For the Hawes case, Fannie Bryant — the family's cook and a key witness for the prosecution — was herself sentenced to death for allegedly aiding Hawes. She died in a prison riot before the sentence could be carried out. Her actual level of involvement remains contested.
