This episode of Codd's World features three guests. Dan Lamont, Director of the Moab Celtic Festival: Scots on the Rocks, Dave Wardell, from Kilberry Bagpipes, and Maggie McGuire, Editor/ Publisher of the Moab Sun. This show took place during the Fall Radiothon for KZMU. Dan Lamont was the first guest. He discussed the history of the Scots on the Rocks/ Moab Celtic Festival and what was lined up for the 2025 event. The festival is scheduled for October 17-19, 2025 at the City Ballfields on Center Street in Moab. Lamont noted that there would be a Tattoo of Bagpipe Bands attending the festival, athletic events, Clan tents, food and various clothing and souvenir booths. The Tattoo is an event where each bagpipe band marches on the field and plays a few songs for the gathered audience. Lamont said this is the 9th year for the festival. He also noted that the festival has grown in recent years, and they hoped to continue the event in Moab for years to come. In an interview recorded in July 2025, Dave Wardell from Kilberry Bagpipe makers from Edinburgh, Scotland, discussed the history of the bagpipes and how they are made. Dave was a master bagpipe player with national awards for his playing, who was now making bagpipes for one of the premier bagpipe makers in the United Kingdom. Dave discussed the materials used in the construction of the instrument and how they have changed over the centuries. Most bagpipes today are made with rubber air bladders that produce the air that goes through the drones that create the unique sound of the pipes. Bagpipes can be traced back to the early 15th century in Scotland. It is believed that a type of bagpipe has been around for a few thousand years. Mr. Wardell said it takes about two full days to complete a bagpipe. They cost around 1,000 pounds ($1,250 US) for a basic instrument and run well into thousands of dollars for fancier instruments with extensive decorations and more expensive materials. He also noted that the demand for bagpipes has grown significantly around the world over the past several decades. Interestingly, there is increased demand for bagpipes made with leather air bladders! Since “Codd's World!” was during Radiothon, Maggie McGuire, Owner and Publisher of the Moab Sun News, joined the show to talk about the importance of local public radio and local newspapers.

Wie immer beginnt Ausgeglaubt mit zwei persönlichen Momenten: Manuels «Stossgebet der Woche» gilt seiner eigenen Verplantheit – nach einer RefLab-Veranstaltung hetzt er wie ein Gejagter zum Zug, um pünktlich an ein Geburtstagsfest zu kommen, nur um dort festzustellen: Das Fest findet erst in mehreren Wochen statt. Stephan dagegen jubelt im «Hallelujah der Woche» über eine neue Leidenschaft: Tennis. Er hat erst vor kurzem angefangen zu spielen – und ist schon ziemlich beeindruckt von seinen eigenen Fortschritten. Von dort aus geht's ins eigentliche Thema: die Zukunft der Religion. Stephan und Manuel knüpfen an ihre letzten beiden Gespräche über Individualismus und Kollektivismus an und fragen, wie sich beides im Christentum verschränkt – und vielleicht auch gegenseitig korrigiert. Einerseits hat das Christentum in seiner Geschichte stark individualisierende Kräfte freigesetzt: Der reformatorische Gedanke, dass jeder Mensch unmittelbar vor Gott steht, hat das moderne Selbstbewusstsein, die Gewissensfreiheit und das Ideal persönlicher Verantwortung entscheidend geprägt. Andererseits stammen die biblischen Texte selbst aus ausgesprochen kollektivistischen Kulturen, in denen Familie, Clan und Sippe die Identität bestimmten. Jesus und Paulus stellen genau dieses Primat infrage – und schwören ihre Anhänger auf eine neue Form von Gemeinschaft ein: das Reich Gottes, in dem soziale, ethnische und geschlechtliche Grenzen keine Rolle mehr spielen («Weder Jude noch Grieche, weder Sklave noch Freier…»). Von hier aus spannt das Gespräch einen Bogen in die Gegenwart: Wie hat das Christentum über Jahrhunderte hinweg die westliche Gesellschaft geprägt – und warum verliert es heute seine Selbstverständlichkeit? Was bedeutet die oft zitierte «metaphysische Obdachlosigkeit» des modernen Menschen, der zwischen Selbstverwirklichung und Sinnsuche pendelt? Und wovon darf oder soll man als protestantischer Christ heute noch träumen? Eine Rückkehr zur alten Grösse? Wohl kaum – und sicher nicht auf dem autoritären Weg, auf dem christliche Nationalisten in den USA derzeit Macht zurückerobern wollen. Aber was wäre die Alternative? Einfach «kleinere Brötchen backen»? Und wenn ja – wie könnten die aussehen? Manuel und Stephan diskutieren, ob die basisdemokratische Struktur der reformierten Kirche dabei hilft, Machtmissbrauch zu verhindern – oder ob sie zugleich mutige Initiativen und visionäre Aufbrüche bremst. Ein intensives Gespräch über Glauben zwischen Autonomie und Bindung, und über Kirchenstrukturen zwischen Tradition und Aufbruch.

Clan, family, and tribe structures have always been significant features in the governance of Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank. As Hamas weakens, these tribes are attempting to exert their authority and project power, leading to clashes on the streets. This is simply a grab for power, opposed by Hamas, which attempts to maintain control through violence and brutality. This process could result in different entities and actors controlling various pockets of the Gaza Strip, leading to a situation of fragmented territories or "bantustans." Retry

This is the second episode in a mini series on the history of the Clan Line, one of Britain's most distinctive and influential shipping companies. In this episode Dr Sam Willis travels the length and breadth of the UK to speak with sailors who served on Clan Line ships, to hear and preserve their memories of this most crucial time in global maritime history. Founded in Glasgow in 1877 by Charles Cayzer, the line quickly grew into a vast fleet that connected Scotland with Africa, India, and beyond. What made it particularly interesting was its combination of commercial power and cultural identity: every ship bore a “Clan” name, giving the company a strong Scottish character that set it apart in the crowded world of British shipping.The Clan Line was important because it played a crucial role in Britain's imperial trade. Its ships carried goods such as jute, tea, and cotton, linking colonial economies to British markets. During both World Wars, the company's vessels were vital to the Allied cause, transporting troops, supplies, and munitions—often at great risk from enemy submarines. Many were lost, but the service of its crews contributed directly to victory.Beyond trade and war, the line symbolised the globalisation of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It represented Scotland's industrial and maritime strength, while also reflecting the dangers and opportunities of long-distance shipping.
