Luther Dickinson is an acclaimed sideman, solo artist, and producer, noted for his work with the North Mississippi Allstars, Phil Lesh, and the Black Crowes. We begin with a discussion of his legendary producer/musician father, Jim, and how he nurtured his son's playing and his work ethic. We also dive into how Luther became a devotee of open tunings via his dad's obsession with Bo Diddley. Dickinson is currently out playing shows with JD Simo and drummer Adam Abrashoff.

What is the best speaker for my Deluxe Reverb, is one of the most asked questions of all-time. A friend recently asked me about doing an episode on this topic, and added that I should give it some added weightiness by finding out what all the pros I know use. So I queried Brent Mason, John Leventhal, Tom Bukovac, Duke Levine, Luke McQeary, JD Simo, Guthrie Trapp, Redd Volkaert, Steve Wariner, James Pennebaker, Jeff King, Jerry McPherson, Rob McNelley, Jedd Hughes, Stuie French, Ryan Wariner, Andy Reiss, Derek Wells, and Kenny Vaughan to find out what they prefer in their Deluxe Reverb. I thought we would have a huge variety of speakers, but surprisingly, it really came down to 3-types. Today we compare those 3 varieties, and look at their strengths and weaknesses. We also look at the stock speakers that were shipped with vintage (1963-1967) BF Deluxe Reverb amps, and why most players don't use them.Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar: https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/#askzac #deluxereverb #zacchildsSupport the show

The discussion begins with a look at Simo's 2nd Danocaster, and how he had just changed the pickups to a set of Budz 58s, that then evolves into a discussion on pickups as JD adjusts his new instrument. Robert's Western World on Nashville's Lower Broadway was home to the Don Kelley Band for as long as anyone can remember. Kelley's band was an institution in Nashville, serving as a stepping stone for super-pickers like Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, Daniel Donato, JD Simo, and more. “Slick” Joe Fick and Luke McQueary also came up through the ranks of the Don Kelley Band. After Don retired in 2020, Fick and McQueary enlisted drummer/vocalist Billy Van Vleet and kept Don's old shift going, throwing down at Robert's Western World each night from Wednesday through Saturday. John Bohlinger and the PG team joined Kelley's Heroes pre-shift at Robert's to rundown their rigs.Brought to you by D'Addario:https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrhttps://www.daddario.com/XPNDRR

I want to love them, but I hate the way most of them sound really small when dialed in clean with a Telecaster's bridge pickup. And as much as I love my old 1965 Deluxe Reverb amp, there are many times when I wish I had an amp that would hit the sweet spot at a lower volume, and be a bit easier to tote around. Earlier this year, I was at JD Simo's studio, and he encouraged me to play through his Headstrong Lil' King. I was blown away and ordered one the next day. It arrived a couple of weeks later, handbuilt by Wayne, and it was no less stellar than Simo's amp. I took the amp on a gig 2-days later, and I kept looking back at it during the gig. I played at least half the time on the bridge pickup with a cleaner tone, and the Lil' King produced wonderfully fat tones. After many years of searching, I found my Princeton.Gear used:2023 Headstrong Lil' King with 12" Eminence GA-SC64 speakerhttps://headstrongamps.com/lil-king-amp1957 Fender Esquire with a 1954 neck pickup, and original bridge pickup. These integral ingredients can be distilled down to hard work, risk-taking, and timing/luck. All 3 of these are incredibly important, and the house quickly falls if any one of these elements is absent. Welcome to Roadcase!! We're stoked to have JD Simo on the show. JD is a stellar musician and rock guitarist with deep roots in blues and psychedelic rock -- combining genres and styles to create a unique mixture which has been lauded by Rolling Stone and Guitar Player magazine, among others. He is a true road dog, playing 100s of gigs annually and has collaborated with the likes of Jack White, Luther Dickenson, Blackberry Smoke, and Phil Lesh and Friends. JD's latest album, Mind Control, is his Covid-era album and a striking one at that; a forced hiatus from road life enabled him to dig into his deep musical reserves to create a gorgeous album revealing for JD the healing powers of musical creation. A highly in-demand session player, JD has added his masterful playing on tons of albums, and even recently played on the movie soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic. So hop on the Roadcase bus for this conversation with JD Simo. JD Simo returns to the Truetone Lounge to talk about his forthcoming blues album and his work with Phil Lesh and Friends. Along the way, Simo discusses some of his favorite blues players demonstrating many of their playing styles for good measure.
In Part 2 with J.D. Simo, we delve into his trio, and his thoughts as they begin working on their next album. We also dive headfirst into his gear, beginning with his recent switch from Plexi Marshalls to mid 60's blackface Fender amps, and touch on his love for lesser-known combos such as the Epiphone Futura, and the Traynor YGM. We end the episode spotlighting Simo's 1962 ES-335, affectionately known as "Red," and the basis for two recent signature models from Gibson Custom.
In Part 3, J.D. talks about his long love of the Fender Telecaster and demonstrates the 1955 Telecaster that he currently tours with. We finish out part 3 with his prized 1960 Les Paul nicknamed "Candy."
J.D. Simo has been recognized by Rolling Stone, Guitar Player, Premier Guitar, and Vintage Guitar Magazine as one of the finest young rock guitarists of his generation. This week I’m going to be talking about Chicago with Nashville based artist, JD Simo. JD is originally from Chicago and has a great appreciation for all food in Chicago, especially the classics. I think Chicago may be one of the easiest cities to talk about when it comes to food, but like I said, JD loves the classics and there really is so much to love about these dishes and the restaurants. Naturally, we’ll be getting into sausages, hot dogs, deep dish & Italian beef. If you want to keep up with JD you can find him on Instagram at @jdsimo If you want to find us, we’re on Instagram at @food.ontour If you have any questions, comments or, most importantly, food recommendations, you can send those to foodontourguys@gmail.com Head to foodontourpod.com for a full list of restaurants mentioned in this episode and all others
