“Kneecap was born out of this need to represent the identity of young people who speak Irish in the city, an identity a lot of people around the world wouldn't know exists,” says Móglaí Bap of Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap. “When I was growing up, you wouldn't have seen the language on mainstream radio or BBC1 or in the cinemas, so as a teenager it wouldn't have been that cool to speak Irish. So Kneecap was part of pushing that boundary and seeing what we could do, and also having a bit of craic, as we say.” In the lead up to their powerful new album, Fenian, Móglaí and bandmate Mo Chara joined me via Zoom for an in-depth discussion of their history. They talked about how the project evolved from being something they did initially for laughs and to get free tickets to festivals into a part of their larger fight against the marginalization of the Irish-language, of which they're native speakers, and their desire to raise awareness of the harms caused by colonialism worldwide. We also discussed their childhood: Moglai's memories of hearing his mother play traditional Irish music on her concertina, Mo Chara's teenage experiences learning Oasis and Stone Roses songs on guitar at a Belfast youth club, how they found each other within the Irish-language community and started making music together, and how their approach to Kneecap has evolved since then. For the uninitiated, in addition to listening to Fenian and their previous album, Fine Art, I also highly recommend watching the biographical film Kneecap, which is funny and dramatic and poignant and a mix of fact and fiction, starring the band as themselves. Gleich zwei besondere Anlässe stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Meilensteine-Spezial Episode: 50 Jahre BAP und der 75. Geburtstag von Wolfgang Niedecken am 30. März 2026. Diesmal geht es nicht nur um ein einzelnes Album, sondern BAP als Liveband im Spiegel von fünf Jahrzehnten Musikgeschichte. Passend dazu ist am 27. März 2026 die Jubiläumsbox "Paar Daach Spääder" erschienen, mit 50 Live-Aufnahmen aus 50 Jahren BAP. Für dieses besondere Meilensteine-Special kommt einer zu Wort, der diese Geschichte wie kein Zweiter geprägt hat: BAP-Frontmann Wolfgang Niedecken. Gemeinsam mit Meilensteine-Host Frank König und SWR1 Musikredakteur Benjamin Brendebach blickt er zurück auf 50 Jahre BAP. Zur Aufzeichnung haben sich die drei im legendären Maarwegstudio2 in Köln getroffen, in dem auch einige BAP-Alben entstanden sind. Nach einem Malerei-Studium in den frühen 1970er Jahren absolvierte Wolfgang Niedecken gerade den Zivildienst und macht immer wieder mit unterschiedlichen Leuten Musik. Die Gruppe, die sich ab 1976 um ihn bildet, trifft sich zunächst in wechselnder Besetzung. An eine Rockstar-Karriere denkt zu diesem Zeitpunkt niemand. Der entscheidende Impuls kommt dann eher zufällig: Ein Saxophonist aus einer früheren Band meldet sich bei Niedecken. Er habe einen Bauernhof geerbt, erzählt er. Dort gebe es einen Hühnerstall, den man mit etwas Arbeit in einen Probenraum umbauen könne. Kein großer Plan und kein Karrieregedanke – einfach ein Ort, an dem man wieder zusammen Musik machen kann. Seinen ersten kölschen Song schrieb Wolfgang Niedecken damals aus Liebeskummer. Der Song kommt gut an, nach und nach entstehen weitere Songs und schließlich ein ganzes Album. Nach der Veröffentlichung wird die Band allerdings wieder umbesetzt. Viele der Musiker haben andere berufliche Verpflichtungen. Auch in den folgenden Jahren bleibt BAP in Bewegung. Mit Klaus Heuser, genannt "Major", kommt 1980 dann aber ein Gitarrist dazu, der die Band und ihren Sound bis 1999 entscheidend prägt. Als BAP im August 1982 auf der Loreley spielen, wird langsam klar, dass aus der Musik mehr werden könnte. Der Auftritt findet im Rahmen des Rockpalast statt. Das Konzert wird europaweit live im Fernsehen übertragen und verschafft der Band eine ganz neue Reichweite. Als offiziellen Gründungstag nennt Wolfgang Niedecken übrigens den 19. Juni 1976 – den Tag, an dem ihn der Anruf wegen des Hühnerstalls erreichte. In 50 Jahren haben BAP einige bemerkenswerte Meilensteine erreicht. Sie schafften es, 13 Nummer-eins-Alben herauszubringen und übertrumpften damit sogar die Beatles. Im Jahr 1982 spielen BAP als Vorband für die Rolling Stones – eine Band, die für sie immer ein wichtiges Vorbild war. Ihr Song "Hück ess sing Band en der Stadt" ist ihnen gewidmet. Und auch an diesem Abend hinterlassen BAP Eindruck: Schon als Vorband reißen sie das Publikum mit – so sehr, dass es selbst den Stones nicht entgeht. Mick Jagger soll die Szene mit einem ungläubigen "What the hell is this?" kommentiert haben. Für SWR1 Musikredakteur Benjamin Brendebach erzählt "Paar Daach Spääder" mehr als nur die Geschichte von BAP. In der Jubiläumsbox spiegelt sich auch ein halbes Jahrhundert deutscher Geschichte und eine Band, die immer dann präsent war, wenn es darauf ankam, Position zu beziehen. Haltung zu zeigen, sagt Wolfgang Niedecken, ist für ihn eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Er könne gar nicht anders. Dabei gehe es ihm nie darum, zu belehren oder politische Vorgaben zu machen. Vielmehr wolle er Menschen dazu bringen, sich mit den wichtigen Fragen auseinanderzusetzen. 50 Jahre BAP – das sind fünf Jahrzehnte voller prägender Momente mit einer der erfolgreichsten deutschen Rockbands und ihrem Frontmann Wolfgang Niedecken. Anlass genug, um zu gratulieren: zum Bandjubiläum und zu Niedeckens 75. Geburtstag. Eine kleine, persönliche Geste gibt es obendrein: Meilensteine Host Frank König und SWR1 Musikredakteur Benjamin Brendebach bringen dem Geburtstagskind ein Poster mit einer Collage aus 2CV-Enten mit. In this episode, we're joined by Austin Cole to discuss the three-part series Black/African Liberation & Grassroots Economies, beginning with part one: "Rootedness for our people, our economies, our liberation." We start with Toni Morrison's concept of rootedness and how it informs urban planning and economic development. From there, we'll dig into Strategies of Counter-war—how fascists are shaping local policy, and how BAP-Baltimore is building alternatives from the ground up. We examine the threat of elite capture and the strategic use of municipal power: how can engagement with the state enable collective self-determination rather than dilute it? Can it do such a thing? We also explore expanded notions of self-defense, the Black commune as theorized by George Jackson and Orisanmi Burton, and the four principles guiding grassroots efforts toward that vision. Finally, we'll sit with the question of mass consciousness—what it demands of us now, and how we might cultivate it together. Austin Cole was raised in Springfield, Ohio, and his people come from the Mississippi Delta and Birmingham, Alabama. He is an organizer, writer, and community development planning practitioner. His professional work focuses on environmental/climate justice, transforming economic systems, and Black/African liberation.
