The ASX 200 rallied 37 points after a weaker start to 9032 (0.4%) as banks broke on through. With CBA up 2.6% and NAB rising 1.4% and the Big Bank Basket up to $292.49 (+1.9%). Insurers bounced back from Friday's heavy losses, QBE up 3.7% and IAG rising 2.2% with financials also doing well, CGF up 1.1% and ZIP up 4.3% on quarterly numbers. REITS back in favour, GMG up 0.7% and SCG rising 1.5%. Industrials too were back in demand, BXB rallied 2.0% with REA up 1.2% and WES rising 1.0%. Tech stocks a little better for a change, WTC up 0.9% and XRO putting on 0.3%. Resources were generally weaker, gold miners under pressure again on profit taking, NST down 3.6% and EVN falling 4.9%. Iron ore miners eased, but rare earths were back in vogue. LYC up 6.6% and ARU leading, UP 18.5%. PLS rose 2.2% with DTR up 7.5% on Colosseum news. A better day for oil and gas, STO up 2.6% and WDS gaining 0.7%. Uranium stocks slipped, PDN down 4.9% and DYL in deep red, off 18.8% as the CEO quit!In corporate news, DRO lost 2.6% as quarterly showed a big revenue jump as expected, ZIP were better than forecast and extended the buyback, BAP crashed 17.7% on operational issues and impairments and a downgrade. On the economic front, NZ inflation rose to 3%, Chinese GDP came in a 4.8% as expected. Asian markets bouncing back hard, Japan up 2.9% on political resolution perhaps, China up 0.7% and HK up 2.2%.10-year yields rise to 4.14%.European markets opening around 0.3% higher. PalestineThe Israeli forces as part of their on going genocide, in the last 24hrs have killed 142 Palestinian civilians, and injured 487. InternmentA British Supreme Court judgement in 2020 ruled that almost 400 internees were unlawfully detained under British law in the 1970s. These internees are now elderly and some are quite poorly. They were victim of appalling treatment at the hands of the British state forces and were held in shameful conditions.‘British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made his views clear earlier this year when he told the British Parliament that he would block compensation.Internment was an abuse of power and a denial of human rights by the British state. This was compounded for these 400 because the British government breached even its own law.The original injustice endured by the internees will be deepened by the stupidity of a vindictive British government which doesn't accept its own law. Another example of the British waiving the rules when it suits their political agenda Defend the GPOThe Dublin GPO and the streets and laneways around it are forever linked with the Easter Rising of 1916. This is a Battlefield site of major historic and international significance which successive Irish governments have failed to develop properly. Successive promises of investment and planning in Moore St have come to nothing. Succesive governments have reduced the National Monument to four houses leaving the rest of the historic area to be destroyed by a London based developer.In keeping with this shameful approach the Irish government last week published a 10-year plan which will see the General Post Office (GPO) become a mixed-use development. The spin from Government is that the GPO will become a flagship project, including retail and office components with a Designated Activity Company being established. Imagine a ten-year-old girl in New Zealand watching an army commercial and declaring, "That's what I want to be". This simple declaration set Dr. Ellen Joan Ford on a transformative journey, a journey of leadership, service, and a new way of thinking about work. Her story is not just inspiring, it's a call to action for all of us. Women are asking for flexible work for working parents. Our businesses want the talented women to be able to focus on both their families and their workday. It is a time for changing how businesses treat women. In this episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Ellen Joan Ford—a leadership expert, military veteran, and the creator of the global #WorkSchoolHours movement. Ellen joins us from New Zealand with a deeply timely and universally relevant message: the structure of work must evolve to meet the real needs of modern families. From the New Zealand Army to Leadership Thought Leader Ellen's story begins with a decade of service in the New Zealand Army, where she worked as an engineer officer and led soldiers at home and abroad. Her military career taught her discipline, courage, and—most importantly—how to lead. As she transitioned out of the military, she pursued an MBA and later a PhD in leadership, driven not by ambition but by a personal challenge. Her doctoral research focused on the leadership experiences of women in the military, surfacing both empowering stories and persistent gender-based inequities. Rather than stop with research, Ellen took action, advising the Chief of the New Zealand Army and presenting her findings to senior leadership. Her goal? To make the Army more inclusive—not just for women, but for everyone. Over 500 parents shared their frustrations: being forced out of the workforce due to caregiving, missing irreplaceable moments in their children's lives, or being underpaid for the same responsibilities simply because they worked "part-time." One night, while breastfeeding her youngest son, Ellen had a powerful realization: "I don't want this for me or anyone else." This was the birth of the #WorkSchoolHours movement, a movement that is not just a response to a problem, but a call to action for immediate change. What Is the #WorkSchoolHours Movement? #WorkSchoolHours is not about working less—it's about working smarter. It's a flexible work philosophy that allows employees, especially parents, to align their work schedules with family commitments without compromising performance or pay. Ellen explains, "We live in a world where we're expected to parent like we don't have a job and work like we don't have children. That's not sustainable." Through her model of Belonging, Autonomy, and Purpose (BAP), Ellen offers a new way to lead and manage teams. Inspired by both anthropology and leadership science, BAP emphasizes: Belonging: Creating a work culture that acknowledges employees as whole people. Autonomy: Giving individuals the flexibility to manage their time and deliver results. Purpose: Helping people connect their work to something meaningful. Ellen argues that when leaders focus on these elements, they can reduce burnout, increase productivity, and retain top talent—especially working mothers and caregivers. This not only benefits the employees but also the businesses, as it leads to a more engaged workforce and better business outcomes.
