In this episode, we're joined by Austin Cole to discuss the three-part series Black/African Liberation & Grassroots Economies, beginning with part one: "Rootedness for our people, our economies, our liberation." We start with Toni Morrison's concept of rootedness and how it informs urban planning and economic development. From there, we'll dig into Strategies of Counter-war—how fascists are shaping local policy, and how BAP-Baltimore is building alternatives from the ground up. We examine the threat of elite capture and the strategic use of municipal power: how can engagement with the state enable collective self-determination rather than dilute it? Can it do such a thing?  We also explore expanded notions of self-defense, the Black commune as theorized by George Jackson and Orisanmi Burton, and the four principles guiding grassroots efforts toward that vision. Finally, we'll sit with the question of mass consciousness—what it demands of us now, and how we might cultivate it together.   Austin Cole was raised in Springfield, Ohio, and his people come from the Mississippi Delta and Birmingham, Alabama. He is an organizer, writer, and community development planning practitioner. His professional work focuses on environmental/climate justice, transforming economic systems, and Black/African liberation. Die titelgebende Band „Ton Steine Scherben“ ist natürlich dabei, aber auch BAP, Marius Müller Westernhagen, Tocotronic und Hannes Wader. Wir haben uns jedenfalls gern mit dem umtriebigen Medien- und Kulturwissenschaftler unterhalten, der nebenbei auch noch ein Buch über Bruce Springsteen herausgebracht hat. A quiet session on the ASX with the index rising 3 points to 8588. The banks held up with CBA rising 0.7% and the Big Bank Basket rising to $271.08 (0.2%). Insurers better too, other financials drifting lower, REITs better with VCX up 0.8% and SCG up 1.0%. Industrials mixed, ORG fell 2.5% with WOW and COL pushing around 1.0% better, retail was mixed, JBH up 1.6% and APE down 1.4%. Tech stocks making some gains after significant losses, WTC up 1.6% and XRO finding support up 2.5%. REA and CAR also finding support.Resources were mixed, gold miners gave back some of the gains with EVN down 1.1% and NEM off 1.5% with iron ore miners better, BHP moved 1.1% ahead with RIO doing well too. Lithium stocks gave back some gains and uranium stocks under pressure after BOE fell 24.6% on a Honeymoon update. DYL down 7.8% and PDN down 4.8%. In oil and gas, the big news was the surprise resignation of WDS CEO Meg O'Neill to take up the helm at BP. WDS dropped 2.7% on the news, STO rose 1.0% as crude rose.In corporate news, BAP rallied 15.5% from lows on the CEO resignation. APA rose 1.2% after selling 20% interest in GDI. REITs mixed, GMG down % with the rest of the sector better. Healthcare eased, CSL down 2.0% and RMD falling 2.3%. Retail stocks fell on the rates news, JBH off 1.9% and APE dropping 2.2% as SUL fell in sympathy with BAP, down 21.3% on another nasty trading update. Telcos slid lower, TLS down 0.6% and TPG with some issues fell 1.6%. Tech once again on the nose, XRO off 0.7% and TNE down 1.6% with 360 falling hard.In resources, iron ore stocks firmed, FMG up 1.7% and RIO flat. Gold miners drifted lower, PRU off 1.5% and NST falling %. Oil and gas stocks eased, uranium mixed, PDN and DYL to the good, LOT down to the bad. Lithium stocks holding, up but rare earths sliding back to earth.In corporate news, LTR dropped 2.3% on a new offtake deal, WAF fell 0.7% on drilling results.On the economic front, the RBA left rates unchanged. PalestineThe Israeli forces as part of their on going genocide, in the last 24hrs have killed 142 Palestinian civilians, and injured 487. InternmentA British Supreme Court judgement in 2020 ruled that almost 400 internees were unlawfully detained under British law in the 1970s.  These internees are now elderly and some are quite poorly.  They were victim of appalling treatment at the hands of the British state forces and were held in shameful conditions.‘British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made his views clear earlier this year when he told the British Parliament that he would block compensation.Internment was an abuse of power and a denial of human rights by the British state.  This was compounded for these 400 because the British government breached even its own law.The original injustice endured by the internees will be deepened by the stupidity of a vindictive British government which doesn't accept its own law.  Another example of the British waiving the rules when it suits their political agenda Defend the GPOThe Dublin GPO and the streets and laneways around it are forever linked with the Easter Rising of 1916. This is a Battlefield site of major historic and international significance which successive Irish governments have failed to develop properly. Successive promises of investment and planning in Moore St have come to nothing. Succesive governments have reduced the National Monument to four houses leaving the rest of the historic area to be destroyed by a London based developer.In keeping with this shameful approach the Irish government last week published a 10-year plan which will see the General Post Office (GPO) become a mixed-use development. The spin from Government is that the GPO will become a flagship project, including retail and office components with a Designated Activity Company being established. Uachtarán Shinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald TD described it well when she said the government's proposal as “another shameful betrayal of Ireland's proud revolutionary history.” In any other city in the world we would see visionary, ambitious plans to develop the site, preserving our history with a national museum, arts and culture, education, tourism and homes to make it a living, breathing area.So, join the battle to Save the GPO and Moore St. Sign up to the petition and support the campaign of the Moore St. Preservation Trust for a modern historical quarter – shaped around the GPO, Moore Street Battlefield site and O'Connell Street. Imagine a ten-year-old girl in New Zealand watching an army commercial and declaring, "That's what I want to be". This simple declaration set Dr. Ellen Joan Ford on a transformative journey, a journey of leadership, service, and a new way of thinking about work. Her story is not just inspiring, it's a call to action for all of us. Women are asking for flexible work for working parents. Our businesses want the talented women to be able to focus on both their families and their workday. It is a time for changing how businesses treat women. In this episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Ellen Joan Ford—a leadership expert, military veteran, and the creator of the global #WorkSchoolHours movement. Ellen joins us from New Zealand with a deeply timely and universally relevant message: the structure of work must evolve to meet the real needs of modern families. From the New Zealand Army to Leadership Thought Leader  Ellen's story begins with a decade of service in the New Zealand Army, where she worked as an engineer officer and led soldiers at home and abroad. Her military career taught her discipline, courage, and—most importantly—how to lead. As she transitioned out of the military, she pursued an MBA and later a PhD in leadership, driven not by ambition but by a personal challenge. Her doctoral research focused on the leadership experiences of women in the military, surfacing both empowering stories and persistent gender-based inequities. Rather than stop with research, Ellen took action, advising the Chief of the New Zealand Army and presenting her findings to senior leadership. Her goal? To make the Army more inclusive—not just for women, but for everyone. Over 500 parents shared their frustrations: being forced out of the workforce due to caregiving, missing irreplaceable moments in their children's lives, or being underpaid for the same responsibilities simply because they worked "part-time." One night, while breastfeeding her youngest son, Ellen had a powerful realization: "I don't want this for me or anyone else." This was the birth of the #WorkSchoolHours movement, a movement that is not just a response to a problem, but a call to action for immediate change. What Is the #WorkSchoolHours Movement? #WorkSchoolHours is not about working less—it's about working smarter. It's a flexible work philosophy that allows employees, especially parents, to align their work schedules with family commitments without compromising performance or pay. Ellen explains, "We live in a world where we're expected to parent like we don't have a job and work like we don't have children. That's not sustainable." Through her model of Belonging, Autonomy, and Purpose (BAP), Ellen offers a new way to lead and manage teams. Inspired by both anthropology and leadership science, BAP emphasizes: Belonging: Creating a work culture that acknowledges employees as whole people. Autonomy: Giving individuals the flexibility to manage their time and deliver results. Purpose: Helping people connect their work to something meaningful. Ellen argues that when leaders focus on these elements, they can reduce burnout, increase productivity, and retain top talent—especially working mothers and caregivers. This not only benefits the employees but also the businesses, as it leads to a more engaged workforce and better business outcomes.
