Tenkara USA is the oldest American tenkara rod company, founded by Daniel Galhardo after a trip to Japan in 2008. TJ is TenkaraUSA's Customer Service and Operations Manager, and John is the Repairs and Dealer Services manager. They've been with the company since it first introduced tenkara rods to the US back in 2009, and between them they have several decades of experience fishing with tenkara rods. They also have arguably more experience with helping people pick the right tenkara rod than anybody else in the industry. Join us as we discuss the best tenkara fishing rods for the various waterways southern fly fishermen are likely to encounter. We talk about the best tenkara rod for small creeks and ponds, bigger rivers and lakes, and the best rods for younger anglers or backcountry fishermen. Daniel Galhardo was born in Brazil, but came to the States as an exchange student, where he fell in love with trout fishing. When Daniel accidentally stumbled on the topic of Tenkara fishing, he was immediately intrigued. Tenkara is an ancient, Japanese form of fly-fishing that uses only a rod, line and fly, but no reel. Daniel committed himself to learning more about its history and in 2009 he founded Tenkara USA.  In this episode of Anchored, we talk about how Daniel became the man responsible for popularising the method within the USA. We dive into the specifics of how Tenkara is done, the advantages, disadvantages, and how it compares to other forms of fly fishing. This episode of Anchored is brought to you by PosterBurner! Now, here's your host, Mark Norquist. Mark: 00:22 Hello everyone and welcome to this episode of the Modern Carnivore podcast. Today I'm joined by Tom Landwehr and this is actually a recording from back in 2017 at the Minnesota Governor's deer hunting opener event, and this is an event that's gone on for many years here in Minnesota and I think is a great reflection of the importance of deer camp culture and the deer hunting season to our state, that the Governor would put an event like this together. Commissioner Landwehr is now ending his tour here as the as the Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources in early 2019, and so I thought it was appropriate to get this podcast recording out as the commissioner of the DNR. He is appointed by the governor to really enforce hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation laws, and also manage much of the public land that exists within the state of Minnesota. There are also federal and county lands, but they're much of it is managed by the state, which is then managed by this organization, the Department of Natural Resources for both recreation as well as industry like timber and mining. They also deal with threats to the land and water like invasive species in diseases like chronic wasting disease, that's starting to affect the deer herd in different areas of the country. Stepping back for a moment, if you look at the North American model for conservation, one of the tenants of it calls for scientific management of wildlife and habitats and state agencies are a big part of that management model. In Minnesota it's called the department of natural resources or the DNR. In other states it's called game and fish or the department of fish and wildlife or ...

In this fourth episode of the Modern Carnivore podcast I sit down with Daniel Galhardo who is the founder of tenkara fly fishing company - Tenkara USA. His company designs, manufactures and sells equipment used in this growing trend in fly fishing called tenkara. This simple form of fly fishing has its origins in the mountain streams of Japan where it's been used to catch trout over the last couple of hundred years. The word tenkara literally means "from heaven" or "from the skies". While there are similarities to the Western-style of fly fishing, they each developed independent of each other. Daniel introduced this type of fishing to the U.S. and started Tenkara USA in 2009. Daniel was the first person to bring the method of fly fishing called Tenkara outside of Japan, and he founded Tenkara USA in 2009. This style of fly fishing is an ultra simple way to get out on the water. And that's why I think it's a great way for somebody to really dip their toe into the world of fly fishing. And even if you're familiar with Tenkara fly fishing, I think you're gonna. Enjoy Daniel's story here today, and him sharing what it's all about and why he brought it to the US. We talk about the history of the technique, how we got into it. Uh, and then we touched on the topic of killing fish, which is a complicated discussion. If you're not too familiar with fly fishing, this is a often talked about item because a lot of people who fly fish do not take any fish...it's all catch and release. And so we have a discussion on that. And then I want to point out the daniel references the coming winter in the, uh, in this episode. And that is because we recorded this last fall even though it's springtime now when, uh, when we're pushing it out. And I want to reference that. Today's episode is sponsored by Earth Rider Beer. Tenkara is the simple Japanese method of fly-fishing that uses only a rod, line and fly. It originated in the hands of commercial anglers in the mountains of Japan. Nowadays tenkara uses telescopic rods made of carbon fiber and synthetic lines, but the simple spirit of the method remains as strong as ever. In 2009, Daniel Galhardo introduced tenkara outside of Japan and created the first company fully dedicated to tenkara. His introduction of tenkara to the world created a small revolution in fly-fishing where people realized fly-fishing could be simple and that anyone can do it. In this episode, the first episode of the Tenkara Cast, Daniel will talk briefly about what tenkara is, give a brief overview of the equipment and discuss why you may want to take up tenkara.
