Bonjour NBP Film Community! For Episode 492, I am joined by Cody Dericks and Nadia Dalimonte from our Airbnb in Cannes for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. This is not a typical episode of the NBP Podcast, as we're doing away with questions from the fans, the polls (although, last week's poll asking "Which Films From The 2026 Cannes Film Festival Are You Most Looking Forward To?" is still live) and any reactions to trailers this week's in favor of discussing the films we've been watching at the world's most prestigious film festival including, "All Of A Sudden," "Butterfly Jam," "Club Kid," "Colony," "Fatherland," "Gentle Monster," "Nagi Notes," "Paper Tiger," "Parallel Tales," "Sheep in the Box," "Tangles," "Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma," The Beloved," "The Electric Kiss," and more! We will be back next week with a more traditional episode for you all to listen to as we provide our recap for the second week of the festival! We're not exactly asking what the true nature of the UFO phenomenon is. It's more like we're asking how people form the beliefs they do (which turns out to be a pretty good way to structure an inquiry into the true nature of something). What does being exposed to lots of stories about encounters with UFOs and their occupants, from people who are clearly emotionally impacted by those encounters, do to someone? What if they tell stories that are similar enough to corroborate one another, but too different to add up to any stable, coherent picture? We examine the long history of researchers, after years of immersion in the details of many cases, coming to the conclusion that the UFO phenomenon is real, but deceptive about its own nature. We focus on one particularly compelling argument for this position: the bewildering number of supposedly crashed or malfunctioning crafts people have encountered over the years. Could vehicles capable of interstellar travel really keep getting tangled up in power lines and crashing into mountainsides? Are all the astonished crowds who see such things really just telling versions of the same idiosyncratic lie, in an unbroken chain down the centuries? And if neither of these scenarios sound very plausible, where does that leave us? Perhaps we might feel deceived. But there are so many ostensible crashes, involving such a bewildering diversity of UFOs and their pilots, that it almost feels less like being lied to, and more like, paradoxically, being told we're being lied to. Perhaps there's just no making sense of any of this. Or perhaps to make sense of it, we need to examine the nature of our own attempts to communicate with, and conduct research on, other species.

They talk about their work and the science that led to them earning this much deserved award, reflecting on decades of research into tau and its role in neurodegenerative disease. The conversation explores how tau functions in the healthy brain, how it becomes harmful in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy, and why certain brain regions are especially vulnerable. The discussion covers different forms of tau, including soluble species that may disrupt how neurons fire before visible tangles appear. Brain banking, imaging and fluid biomarkers are highlighted as key tools for understanding disease differences and improving diagnosis. The importance of rare MAPT mutations and what they can teach us about future treatments is also explored. Alongside the science, there are thoughtful reflections on mentorship, risk taking and the value of asking ambitious questions in dementia research. 10 Key Takeaways

It's becoming almost a tradition that when I need to talk about something really difficult, I invite David Gate on the Podcast. David is a former worship leader, recording artist turned author who has a keen eye about what is happening in the world. And he's not afraid to tell it like it is. David wrote an article recently called “The Soundtrack For American Fascism is Worship Music” – I know, pretty intense. But also not entirely hard to believe, if you're paying attention. In this conversation we talk about it – how worship music can be co-opted to serve anti-Christian political agendas. How easy it is for our Christianity to become enmeshed with our politics to the point where we can't tell where one begins and the other ends. We look historically at how Hitler co-opted the music of Wagner to serve his political aims. How worship music can be manipulative in healthy and unhealthy ways. We talk about choosing songs and what to do if you're tired of mainstream, popular worship music. The conversation ends with some music recommendations and thoughts on David's creative process. This is a difficult chat, but a great one. You'll be uncomfortable frequently. You may disagree some. But I guarantee it will challenge your thinking and improve your ministry life if you allow it. This is David Santistevan. You can email me any time at David@beyondsundayworship.com. As always, thanks for listening. Topics Covered: When David first noticed the politicization of American worship music What David liked and disliked about the worship industry, as an insider The musician similarities and differences between worship music and Wagner How Hitler co-opted Wagner to serve his political agenda Why it’s not crazy to consider how worship music can serve authoritarian regimes Paying attention to how worship music can manipulate a room The difference between empathy and worship Healthy and unhealthy triumphalism in church Debrief of the Charlie Kirk memorial and what we can learn from it Pro football/College football and racism What to do if you can’t stomach singing popular worship music in church A true definition of Christian persecution Resources Mentioned: Show Sponsor: Planning Center David Gate The Soundtrack For American Fascism is Worship Music by David Gate A Rebellion of Care: Poems & Essays by David Gate Nested in Tangles by Hannah Frances Baby by Dijon Show Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Planning Center, an all-in-one church management software made to help churches help people. You can organize your ministries and keep everyone on your team communicating and aligned around what's going on. As a worship leader, good communication is key to building a strong worship team. You can cultivate relationships while ensuring everyone has what they need to successfully prep for your services. But why not take it up a notch using the chat feature? Built right into the Services mobile app—which, by the way, you should totally download if you haven't already—chat helps you coordinate all the service details with your team. Plus, you can have fun while doing it! No more juggling emails, group texts, and multiple apps to ensure your whole team is aligned. Chat will simplify your communication in one convenient place through the Services mobile app. And everyone can ask questions, request prayer, or join the banter in real-time with one another. The really cool part about chatting with your teams? Team members are dynamically added or removed from conversations as availability changes! So if your original bass player suddenly declines (why is it so hard to find a bass player, anyway?), your newly scheduled bass player is automatically added to the chat conversation. All of your chat conversations stay in sync. No more outdated group threads or irrelevant messages! So what are you waiting for? Download the Services app and start chatting! The Future of Everything presented by Stanford Engineering

Molecular biologist Judith Frydman studies the nuances of protein folding and how defects in the process lead to neurodegenerative diseases. Her team studies protein folding in human cells and in model organisms, like yeast and worms, to understand the molecular events that precipitate harmful protein defects in humans. In one example, Frydman's team explored how aging affects the creation and the quality of proteins in the brain, leading to cognitive problems. She is now looking to develop therapies – someday perhaps leading to cures – to debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS, and others. The power of science gives her true hope in these important pursuits, Frydman tells host Russ Altman in this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? “Nobody writes alone—and if they do, I don't think they write well.” In this riveting episode of Uncorking a Story, debut novelist and former fashion exec Kay Smith-Blum shares how a haunting dream, buried Cold War secrets, and a real-life radioactive whale led to her award-winning novel Tangles. We dig into her writing process, the staggering truth behind the Hanford nuclear site, and the twists in her own personal history—including finding her birth family and saving a sibling's life. This is historical fiction reimagined—and a life story that reads like a novel. Key Themes: From Fashion to Fiction: Kay's journey from Neiman Marcus exec to award-winning novelist proves it's never too late to rewrite your story. Uncovering Hanford's Dirty Secrets: Tangles is based on chilling real events—radioactive whales, poisoned salmon, and decades of government cover-ups. The Dream That Sparked a Novel: A single, surreal image—red hair floating in water—launched the story that would become Tangles. A Family Found, and Saved: Kay's discovery of her birth family led to a stunning twist—she was the perfect stem cell match for the brother her birth parents kept. Redefining Historical Fiction: With a dual timeline and environmental thriller elements, Tangles challenges what the genre can be. Persistence Pays Off: It wasn't her first manuscript—or her second—that broke through. But when she found the right story, publishers noticed. Writers Need a Village: Kay credits writing groups, critique partners, and deep craft study as the backbone of her success. Our nuclear security has been compromised and that really is a dangerous situation because all of our nuclear sites are nuclear power plants, or they are a theoretically defunct site like where nuclear Hanford doesn't occur anymore, but it represents three super-fund sites that need to be cleaned up because of the amount of nuclear waste. What has been a really good outcome of [writing this book] is this being in the news again, people are starting to understand what a threat the amount of nuclear waste that's already been created can be to the public at large, because nuclear waste is volatile. Kay Smith-Blum, a former fashionista and Seattle School Board President, spends her days debunking the tropes of the mid-20th-century history. An odd dream and the recent upheaval over leaking radioactive waste tanks at the Hanford Nuclear site compelled her to write, TANGLES, named 2024 Book of the Year by the Literary Global Book Awards and Best Debut Fiction by the American Writing Awards 2024.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kay Smith-Blum, author of the book Tangles. After selling her European fashion specialty store in 2016, Kay Smith-Blum began writing the novel she had been percolating on for two decades. Three manuscripts later, Smith-Blum's debut novel, Tangles, depicts the human costs of the nuclear age and the dangerous legacy it leaves for future generations. “The Calf” is a companion piece, and the first in a series of short works and essays that accompanied the release in November 2024. Winner of the 2023 Black Fox Lit short story contest, Smith-Blum has been published in multiple literary journals.   In my book review, I stated Tangles is an amazing debut novel that pushes the genre boundaries. Is it historical fiction? A love story? A thriller/mystery/suspense? The answer is yes - and a whole lot more.   We meet Luke and learn that he is sure the nuclear power plant in his community poisoned the citizens, including his father. He also believes that those in charge, from plant officials to government leaders, knew of the safety issues and kept them a secret. Because of this, Luke sets off to prove these theories once and for all, making enemies along the way.   Luke is a likeable character, and Kay helps us get inside his head. Whether we see him as a young teen when he falls in love with his married neighbor or as an adult dealing with his own cancer diagnosis and befriending a fatherless child, it is easy to understand his motivations and cheer him on.   Will Luke be able to find the answers he seeks? Will he ever know what happened to his first love?
