On today's episode, I talk to musician Hannah Frances. Growing up just outside of Philly, Hannah was doing all kinds of creative work from a young age, from singing to poetry to composing. In 2018, she made her first album White Buffalo, and since then has recorded four other albums. Her fourth album Keeper of the Shepherd garnered a great deal of acclaim leading Fire Talk Records to reissue it earlier this year, as well as release her new album Nested in Tangles, which is out next week, and it is fantastic! “Nobody writes alone—and if they do, I don't think they write well.” In this riveting episode of Uncorking a Story, debut novelist and former fashion exec Kay Smith-Blum shares how a haunting dream, buried Cold War secrets, and a real-life radioactive whale led to her award-winning novel Tangles. We dig into her writing process, the staggering truth behind the Hanford nuclear site, and the twists in her own personal history—including finding her birth family and saving a sibling's life. This is historical fiction reimagined—and a life story that reads like a novel. Key Themes: From Fashion to Fiction: Kay's journey from Neiman Marcus exec to award-winning novelist proves it's never too late to rewrite your story. Uncovering Hanford's Dirty Secrets: Tangles is based on chilling real events—radioactive whales, poisoned salmon, and decades of government cover-ups. The Dream That Sparked a Novel: A single, surreal image—red hair floating in water—launched the story that would become Tangles. A Family Found, and Saved: Kay's discovery of her birth family led to a stunning twist—she was the perfect stem cell match for the brother her birth parents kept. Redefining Historical Fiction: With a dual timeline and environmental thriller elements, Tangles challenges what the genre can be. Persistence Pays Off: It wasn't her first manuscript—or her second—that broke through. But when she found the right story, publishers noticed. Writers Need a Village: Kay credits writing groups, critique partners, and deep craft study as the backbone of her success. Our nuclear security has been compromised and that really is a dangerous situation because all of our nuclear sites are nuclear power plants, or they are a theoretically defunct site like where nuclear Hanford doesn't occur anymore, but it represents three super-fund sites that need to be cleaned up because of the amount of nuclear waste. What has been a really good outcome of [writing this book] is this being in the news again, people are starting to understand what a threat the amount of nuclear waste that's already been created can be to the public at large, because nuclear waste is volatile. Kay Smith-Blum, a former fashionista and Seattle School Board President, spends her days debunking the tropes of the mid-20th-century history. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kay Smith-Blum, author of the book Tangles. After selling her European fashion specialty store in 2016, Kay Smith-Blum began writing the novel she had been percolating on for two decades. Three manuscripts later, Smith-Blum's debut novel, Tangles, depicts the human costs of the nuclear age and the dangerous legacy it leaves for future generations. “The Calf” is a companion piece, and the first in a series of short works and essays that accompanied the release in November 2024. Winner of the 2023 Black Fox Lit short story contest, Smith-Blum has been published in multiple literary journals.   In my book review, I stated Tangles is an amazing debut novel that pushes the genre boundaries. Is it historical fiction? A love story? A thriller/mystery/suspense? The answer is yes - and a whole lot more.   We meet Luke and learn that he is sure the nuclear power plant in his community poisoned the citizens, including his father. He also believes that those in charge, from plant officials to government leaders, knew of the safety issues and kept them a secret. Because of this, Luke sets off to prove these theories once and for all, making enemies along the way.   Luke is a likeable character, and Kay helps us get inside his head. Environmental advocate and HOANW founder, Gerry Pollet moderates a conversation with debut author Kay Smith-Blum and investigative journalist and author, Joshua Frank. They will explore the real-life inspirations behind Smith-Blum's novel, Tangles, and its themes of environmental justice and human resilience against the stark backdrop of the state of the cleanup today, highlighted in Frank's non-fiction volume, Atomic Days. Don't miss this chance to dive into an emotionally charged story that daylights the fallout—both literal and figurative—of America's nuclear ambitions and the stark realities of the nuclear waste troubles today. Kay Smith-Blum enters the nuclear discussion with her novel Tangles, a gripping historical thriller that weaves together mystery, personal struggles, and a government conspiracy. Set against the backdrop of Hanford's radioactive history, the story follows young scientist Luke Hinson as he uncovers the hidden dangers of nuclear contamination while grappling with his thyroid cancer diagnosis and a haunting connection to Mary Boone, his former neighbor who vanished under mysterious circumstances. The narrative alternates between the 1940s when Mary fought to expose government cover-ups, and the 1960s, as Luke pursues the truth amid bureaucratic resistance and personal turmoil. Investigative journalist and award-winning author, Joshua Frank, has been knee-deep in all things nuclear for almost a decade. His most recent book, Atomic Days daylights the most toxic place in America: Hanford. Once home to the United States's largest plutonium production site, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state is laced with 56 million gallons of radioactive waste. The threat of an explosive accident at Hanford is all too real—an event that could be more catastrophic than Chernobyl. Frank provides a much-needed refutation of the myths of nuclear technology—from weapons to electricity—and shines a spotlight on the ravages of Hanford and its threat to communities, workers, and the global environment. Kay Smith-Blum, a former business owner and Seattle School Board President, is lover of the natural world. An avid gardener, Smith-Blum founded Environmental Endeavors, the first greenhouse program in Seattle Public Elementary Schools. A fan of mid-20th-century history, Smith-Blum has penned two other manuscripts set in Texas, but the recent upheaval over leaking waste tanks at the Hanford site compelled her to write her debut novel, TANGLES. Named the Western WA Woman Business Owner of 2013, Smith-Blum has lived in Seattle for four decades. She works out her writer's block in her sons' gardens and the nearest lap pool. For more info see https://www.kaysmith-blum.com Joshua Frank is co-editor of CounterPunch and co-host of CounterPunch Radio. His latest book is Atomic Days: The Untold Story of the Most Toxic Place in America. He is currently finishing up a book on the downside of the green energy revolution, to be published by Haymarket Books in the summer of 2025. State Representative Gerry Pollet (46th District: North Seattle) is the co-founder (1987) and Executive Director of Heart of America Northwest, the region's largest public group advocating for the cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.  In 1986, Gerry wrote and directed the statewide ballot referendum which stopped Hanford from becoming the nation's High Level Nuclear Waste dump. He continues to direct Heart of America Northwest, working closely with affected Tribal Nations. Gerry led efforts to stop the US Department of Energy from dumping radioactive chemical wastes into unlined ditches at Hanford in 2004 and continues working to protect the Columbia River from leaking High Level Nuclear Waste tanks. Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

On this week's Keepin It Real, Cam tells us about some early morning attacks that are happening in his part of town. You'd be surprised at who is doing the attacking. ----- On the top of the Tangles Hair Salon on Bit and Spur Road in Mobile sits a hat and a headlamp with its light on. The headlamp is the type that an early morning jogger wears before the sun comes up. How it got up there is a heck of a story. Dennison Crocker jogs before daylight nearly every morning. His headlamp lights the way. One dark morning near Bit and Spur Road, a giant thunk, thud, and whoosh caught Dennison off guard, and his hat and the light were gone. Something had hit him in the back of the head. His light was flying away and stopped on the roof of Tangles. The culprit: an owl. Likely a barred owl. They're the ones known to attack. But that was just the beginning. Weeks later he was jogging not far from the same spot when the owl hit him again. He was in the middle of the road and, bang. Dennison started swatting wildly in the air. Just then a car stopped and asked if he were ok – Dennison was, after all, wildly swinging his arms around in the air in the middle of the road before daylight early one weekday morning. He told the driver about the owl. The driver looked concerned for Dennison's mental well-being and slowly drove away and, just then, the owl hit him again. The driver reversed back, seeing Dennison wildly swinging his arms again and offered to get him outta there. Dennison dove in and went straight home. The owl has become quite a star around here. My new best friend, ChatGPT, says the owl is either protecting its nest or it thinks Dennison is poaching on its hunting ground. It's probably the latter since it's a bit early yet for owls to be nesting. So Dennison, per the owl, looks like a food supply threat. And, well, maybe he kinda does. Dennison's a big solid guy and I'm guessing he'd need a lot of squirrels to fill up, leaving fewer for his owl friend. The owl is rightly concerned Dennison taking more than his share. I learned about all this at my regular Thursday beer drinking session with my homies and it was Jay Stubbs who told Dennison's story only because Jay told us HE has been attacked, too. Jay is an early morning walker and not far from Tangles where Dennison's hat sits, Jay got hit by what he says felt like a broom over the back of his head. His hat flew off and all he saw was wings. Jay, too, looks like a food supply threat. Jay could pack in some squirrels. Oddly, I'm on team owl. I don't want anyone to get hurt, I don't wany eyes gouged out, but I like it that in our terribly predictable world, we have to worry about an owl attacking. It makes me chuckle. Getting attacked by an owI is something you could never have predicted sitting on your couch New Year's Day, making guesses about your upcoming year. It's a wonderfully refreshing story of life's randomness and unpredictability. What's the moral? It's simply this – it's against the normal order of nature for people to exercise before daylight. Even the owls know this. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.

Ann and Barbara Untangling on The Living Process with Greg Madison. Episode 22  I am excited to launch the new season of The Living Process with guests Barbara McGavin and Ann Weiser Cornell, a very well-known partnership within the Focusing world and beyond. Barbara and Ann are both accomplished Focusing teachers, having developed the model of Inner Relationship Focusing and Treasure Maps to the Soul,  but they are also writers and in this episode, we talk about their first book together, Untangling. Untangling offers a very helpful description of the experience of being caught within some of life's most difficult and stuck patterns. The book then offers some specific skills and attitudes we can develop to help us release even these seemingly intractable dilemmas.   In this episode, we talk about how we get stuck inside of 'a tangle' and how we cannot solve or think our way out of it. Many of us can spend our lives within tangles, with no full sense of who we are. We talk about how these tangles always involve other people and how the key to loosening their grip is to develop 'self in presence'. Tangles are seen as a stoppage in process not a problem in understanding. It is a fascinating take on felt sensing and working with parts which I am sure Focusing people and those new to experiential approaches will find valuable.  Barbara McGavin and Ann Weiser Cornell have been discovering the processes of change that became Untangling® since 1994. Since then they've had the pleasure of offering Untangling® retreats and online classes for people seeking transformation all over the world. They are also the co-developers of Inner Relationship Focusing. Barbara has a background in humanistic psychology, teaching, fine art, and graphic design. Ann has a background in linguistics and humanistic psychology. They are both Coordinators with The International Focusing Institute. The Book: Untangling. My guests today on the Online for Authors podcast are the editors of Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women with a forward by Aimie K Runyan. The stories in Feisty Women span six centuries. Within these stories, you'll find that even when time periods and geographical locations vary greatly, women's struggles as they confront adversity are often remarkably universal. The twenty-three stories in this collection follow ordinary women from the 1470s to the 1960s as they rise to meet life's challenges. Foreign invasions, the outbreak of war, rigid domestic authority, strictures of society and religion, the supernatural, love and family bonds all serve as catalysts for the feisty deeds of the women in these tales. Aimie K. Runyan is the internationally bestselling author of The School for German Brides, A Bakery in Paris, and Mademoiselle Eiffel. She writes to celebrate unsung heroines. She has written eight historical novels and is delving into the exciting world of contemporary women's fiction. She has been a finalist for the Colorado Book Award five times, a nominee for the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' 'Writer of the Year, ' and a Historical Novel Society's Editors' Choice selection. Aimie is active as a speaker and educator in the writing community in Colorado and beyond. She lives in the beautiful Rocky Mountains with her wonderful husband, two (usually) adorable children, two (always) sweet cats, and a pet dragon. Website: aimiekrunyan.com IG: @bookishaimie FB: @aimiekrunyan X: @aimiekrunyan   After a career as a university professor teaching and publishing in philosophy, Carolyn Korsmeyer turned her hand to fiction. She has published two novels, one historical – Charolotte's Story, one a mystery – Little Follies: A Mystery at the Millennium. Her third novel, Riddle of Spirit and Bone, will be released in February 2025.   Website: www.carolynkorsmeyer.com FB: @carolyn.korsmeyer IG: @carolyn.korsmeyer LinkedIn: carolyn-korsmeyer   Christy Matheson writes romantic Regency fiction about friends, family, and finding one's place in an ever-changing world. Her debut novel was a finalist for the 2023 WFWA Rising Star Award, and is currently on submission, represented by Kristina Sutton Lennon. She is an award-winning spoken word poet. Christy is also an embroidery artist, classically trained pianist, and sews all of her own clothes. She lives in Oregon, on a country property that fondly reminds her of a Regency estate (except with a swing set instead of faux Greek ruins), with her five children, two Shelties, a bunny, and an improbable amount of art supplies. Website: christymatheson.com FB: @ Christy Matheson, Author IG: @christy_matheson_author X: @CMathesonAuthor   Elaine Schroller reads and writes historical fiction to escape writing about computer software and to travel to other places in time. Her degree is in History, which gave her the perfect training for researching specific places and events in DARE NOT TELL and THE BRAVEST SOLDIER. She's traveled to all but one of the countries in the books and visited all the sites where the story takes place, some more than once.   She was an oil brat, and attended high schools in Algiers, Algeria, Northwood, England, Clear Lake City, Texas, Beirut, Lebanon, and Kingston-upon-Thames, England. For many years, she's lived in Bellaire, Texas. She and her husband raised their son there. Now they have a rescue cocker spaniel underfoot and travel as often as they can convince their son to look after the dog for them.   Elaine is a member of the Historical Novel Society and the Women's Fiction Writers Association.   Website: www.elaineschroller.com IG: @elaineschroller FB: @elaine.aucoin.schroller   After selling her European fashion specialty store in 2016, Kay Smith-Blum began writing the novel she had been percolating on for two decades. Three manuscripts later, Smith-Blum's debut novel, Tangles, depicts the human costs of the nuclear age and the dangerous legacy it leaves for future generations. “The Calf” is a companion piece, and the first in a series of short works and essays that will accompany the release of Smith-Blum's novel in November 2024. Winner of the 2023 Black Fox Lit short story contest, Smith-Blum has been published in multiple literary journals.   Website: www.KaySmith-Blum.com IG: @discerningKSB FB:  @kay.smithblum LinkedIn: kay-smith-blum-3877273 X: @kaysmithblum   Kimberly Sullivan writes the women's fiction stories she loves to read, both contemporary and historic tales of women and the rich lives they lead along their journeys of self-discovery. She is an award-winning author of four novels and one short story collection - . Three Coins, Dark Blue Waves, In The Shadow of The Apennines, Drink Wine and Be Beautiful: Short Stories, and Rome's Last Noble Palace. Her new novel, EASTER AT THE THREE COINS INN, will be published in the autumn. A lifetime admirer and longtime resident of Italy, Kimberly is often guilty of sneaking the bel paese into her stories.   Website: kimberlysullivanauthor.com IG: @kimberlyinrome Goodreads: Kimberly Sullivan BookBub: Kimberly Sullivan Books   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1 #feistydeeds #womensfiction #historicalfiction #anthology #shortstories #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview

Pour a glass and nestle in as we welcome the legendary Zach Freeman to the show, swirling a robust 2021 Earthquake Zin between tales of early sports podcasting glory and tech nostalgia. Our palates dance with the notes of blackberry and huckleberry, while laughter ensues over the surprise presence of huckleberry—yes, huckleberry—in our glasses. Zach takes us on a stroll down memory lane to the days of MySpace hustles and those unforgettable AOL Instant Messenger dings, capturing the essence of a bygone digital era. The conversation takes a sharp turn as we sift through the murky waters of data privacy, with TikTok's current debates at the forefront. We dissect the ethical quandaries of insurance companies and data sharing, while pondering the cultural ramifications and national security concerns of TikTok's Chinese ties. It's a candid debate that balances the scales of capitalistic liberties with the weight of international policy and America's media stance against China's restrictive practices. Shifting gears to close, we delve into a South Florida man's insurance predicament, a cautionary tale of OnStar's unsolicited data sharing. This opens the door to a broader conversation about the automotive industry's handling of our personal information, set against the backdrop of European and Californian data protection laws. We wrap up with a peek into AI's expanding role across industries, speculating on its potential to reshape creativity and generational dynamics, all while keeping the chat light with local business quips and the latest consumer recalls. If you're looking for a great Christmas read, Jennifer Siennes has a new Christmas novella you won't want to miss. Part of the Bedford County series, Tangles and Tinsel offers a new start for Kimberly and a second chance at love for Jax. Listen in to learn more! In this episode, we discussed the difference between Jennifer's Apple Hill Series and her Bedford County Series.   Jennifer also shared her new idea for a new series that I, for one, am eager to read. EEEP! Tangles and Tinsel by Jennifer Sienes Why didn't her life get the memo regarding Christmas being about peace on Earth and goodwill to men? For the first Christmas in years, Kimberley Saint John may actually get that peace on Earth she's been dreaming of. Daddy has been sober for going on two years (a record), and if he stays that way, she might have a chance for a life of her own. Maybe even a family. And between you, her, and the fence post, she'd love it if that family included her childhood friend Jax Jenson and his kids. Except he's still mourning the loss of his wife. Jax doesn't understand why no one has snatched up sweet, beautiful, and funny Kim. Then again, the way she carries hurt and betrayal around like battle gear might have something to do with it. And he is not knight-in-shining-armor material. His wife could've told her that. Kim's dreams are shattered when Mama shows up, after a twenty-year absence, sending Kim into a tailspin of worry for her daddy. Desperate, she turns to the one man who gets her—Jax. What will it take for Kim and Jax to untangle emotions that keep them from trusting in God's sovereignty and find purpose through the pain? In our enlightening discussion, we take a deep dive into Dolores Cannon's theory on incarnations and Paramahansa's 'carnation wheel' idea, exploring how these perspectives can be reconciled despite their differences. We probe into the concept of 'loopers' and 'drip downs,' and navigate the murky waters of ego and its role in understanding reincarnations. As we journey further, we find ourselves under the shadowy veil of cults, occult practices, child sacrifice, and pedophilia. We ponder how acknowledging these dark forces intertwines with our quest to understand Christ and find inner peace. Walking through the path of redemption and unity, we examine the transformative process of emerging from darkness and embracing light, and how our hearts serve as a portal back to unity. Together, we leave no stone unturned as we discuss complex matters such as karma, salvation, compassion, personal responsibility, and how every choice we make leads us down different paths. As our journey unfolds, we delve into intriguing topics like Human Design Profiles, trauma-based programming, and the Church's manipulation of access to spiritual truth.
