Around 2016, buoyed by so-called data kranti  ("data revolution"), an aspirational neo-middle class of users in India accessed internet for the first time on their mobile phones. Unlimited: Aspirational Politics and Mobile Media Distribution (MIT Press, 2026) tells the story of digital infrastructures that are being created by state-corporations for content and money to move and reach such users. It interrogates how their design impact the forms of inclusions and exclusions enacted as well as the horizon of social behaviors and expectations in "Digital India." The book contends that to understand the possibilities and limits of India's aspirational politics, media studies scholars should attend to infrastructures of aspiration: the distributional logistics of streaming content and mobile money are the infrastructural backbone that recalibrate thresholds of aspirational goals.  Digital content media distribution is also shaped by how user practices get entangled with particular affordances of platforms, and hence the need to study both participatory cultures of circulation and logistics of distribution together. Drawing on in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, critical discourse analysis and participant observation, the book traces the supply chains of content delivery networks enabling streaming video-on-demand services and informal ways of circulating "vernacular" music videos through memory cards. Unlimited does not restrict itself to formal media infrastructures, but also researches online phishing and lending scam assemblages to understand how such scams perform critical boundary work to reveal the cracks in and workings of financial distribution networks. This book offers a systematic examination of distribution considerations—including localization strategies—required for imagining mobile phone users across the varied regional geographies of "Digital India." Rahul Mukherjee is Associate Professor of TV & New Media and graduate chair in the Department of Cinema & Media Studies at University of Pennsylvania. His teaching and research focus on the logistical and environmental dimensions of digital infrastructures and platforms. Rahul is the author of the monograph Radiant Infrastructures, and his work has been published in Critical Inquiry, SM+S, New Media & Society, and Science, Technology & Human Values. He has co-edited a special issue on "Media Power in Digital Asia" for Media, Culture & Society journal.   Priyam Sinha is an Alexander Von Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Asian and African Studies, Humboldt University in Berlin. Then let's dive into today's episode of The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast. We are not the go to experts. We are just two regular guys exploring big issues cold, with every conversation starting from a question sent in by a listener.The first of today's two listener questions comes from John in the lovely village town of Charlbury, in Oxfordshire, England. He asks, “We say making memories with loved ones is what matters, but what is their meaning if they die with us?”Stuart suggests that making memories is an active process, that inevitably has consequences, and those consequences affect other people's lives.William explains that when he spends time with people who matter deeply to him, he focuses on being fully present, rather than trying to create memories.Stuart explains that while people may make memories with those close to them, it's the ongoing shared moments that anchor them in the present, leaving a retained emotional warmth, that motivates future connection and sustains the relationship, even though that residual feeling is intangible.William believes that being present, in meaningful moments, with close friends and loved ones, provides strength in the moment and a reservoir of memories to draw on during difficult times. Ultimately, what sustains him most is the hope of seeing those he cares about again before he dies.The second question in this episode comes from the middle of the ocean, from Kev in St George's, Bermuda. He asks, “Are the drivers of aspiration directly connected to the drivers of reduced biodiversity?”Stuart believes that aspiring to something does not have to be unsustainable. He suggests that one could, for example, aspire to become a leading expert in biodiversity. The doyen if you please.William feels that the common idea of aspiration often involves wanting more than you currently have, which can reduce biodiversity because it increases consumption.Stuart suggests that blindness, or a lack of awareness, is a key driver of aspiration, and a factor in the reduction of biodiversity.William argues that overconsumption extends beyond material goods, to how we use land. He gives the example of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England, questioning whether such a large house and extensive grounds, for a single family are truly necessary, framing it as overconsumption of space, and resources.Stuart concludes this episode: suggesting that culture can influence both aspiration and reduced biodiversity, but the separation is complex. He explains that biodiversity can be affected indirectly. For example, damage along a bird migration route, can impact nesting sites far away. While some impacts are connected to aspiration, others are isolated, making it difficult to separate the drivers entirely. Can you look at all the synaptic connections of a brain, and tell me one nontrivial memory from the organism that has that brain? If so, you shall win the $100,000 prize from the Aspirational Neuroscience group. I was recently invited for the second time to chair a panel of experts to discuss that question and all the issues around that question - how to decode a non-trivial memory from a static map of synaptic connectivity. Before I play that recording, let me set the stage a bit more. Aspirational Neuroscience is a community of neuroscientists run by Kenneth Hayworth, with the goal, from their website, to "balance aspirational thinking with respect to the long-term implications of a successful neuroscience with practical realism about our current state of ignorance and knowledge." One of those aspirations is to decoding things - memories, learned behaviors, and so on - from static connectomes. They hold satellite events at the SfN conference, and invite experts in connectomics from academia and from industry to share their thoughts and progress that might advance that goal. In this panel discussion, we touch on multiple relevant topics. One question is what is the right experimental design or designs that would answer whether we are decoding memory - what is a benchmark in various model organisms, and for various theoretical frameworks? We discuss some of the obstacles in the way, both technologically and conceptually. Like the fact that proofreading connectome connections - manually verifying and editing them - is a giant bottleneck, or like the very definition of memory, what counts as a memory, let alone a "nontrivial" memory, and so on. And they take lots of questions from the audience as well. I apologize the audio is not crystal clear in this recording. I did my best to clean it up, and I take full blame for not setting up my audio recorder to capture the best sound. So, if you are a listener, I'd encourage you to check out the video version, which also has subtitles throughout for when the language isn't clear. More on the anointed kohen, in comparison with the court - specifically, the bringing of a sin-offering for a violation that would receive "karet" if done intentionally and entails a sin-offering when done unwittingly. Plus, the significance of these details being biblical in origin, and therefore prompt a hunt for the source text, as compared to a halakhic dispute. Also, a new mishnah: When the court would not be required to bring the offering. Note that the "aseh" and "lo ta'aseh" come together - which likely would have benefited from more specific articulation in the episode. The cases of ritual impurity or contamination in the Temple come front and center - and are contrasted with the same kind of erroneous judgement having a different outcome with regard to the offering if it were about a menstruant woman, as compared to the consecretated foods in the Temple. Thus, limitations on the requirement to bring an offering in the event of an erroneous ruling. Also, another new mishnah! With additional limitations, specifically on the kinds of cases for which the court might have issued an erroneous ruling and then not necessarily been obligated to bring an offering in atonement. For example: false testimony. Plus, what is the liability of a king in these kinds of capacities? (Hint: It's a machloket)
