April Vokey is a fly fisher, outdoorswoman, membership coordinator, casting instructor, mother, world-traveler, DIY enthusiast, and master of dirty jokes. Her journey in the fly fishing world has been one of her passion, dedication, and unwavering advocacy for the sport. From a young age, she felt an unbreakable bond with nature and the rush of the river. Even as a toddler, she was engrossed in the pursuit, meticulously assembling her tackle box with an array of lures and baits. At 16, you could find her chasing salmon and steelhead in the rivers along the coastline of British Columbia, baitcaster and driver's license in hand. For her, those experiences weren't just about the catch, rather a cornerstone of self-discovery and an escape from the challenges of city life. In her late teens, she discovered fly fishing and knew that she had to somehow structure in her life so she could do it every day. Guiding for sturgeon and salmon with a local outfitter was a stepping stone, and at age 24, in 2007, she founded her own company, Fly Gal Ventures, to share her passion as a guide. Her passion for fly fishing and the outdoors has since taken her to far-flung corners of the world, all in pursuit of the next adventure. Over the years, She's been humbled by talented anglers and a supportive community who eventually drove her to start Anchored Outdoors, an online membership that has been her most fulfilling venture to date.
April Vokey needs little introduction to the fly fishing podcast community. Hosting one of the largest fly fishing podcasts as well as being the membership coordinator for Anchored Outdoors, she has developed a passion for teaching and empowering anglers around the globe. In this episode, she shares with us her story of falling in love with fishing, starting Anchored Outdoors, and how being a mom has influenced her perspective of everything. April Vokey began fishing as a toddler. By the sixth grade she was saving her allowance for weekend visits to the local tackle shop where she eventually stocked her ‘hand-me-down' Plano box with every lure and bait she could afford. Counting down days for the opportunity to attain her driver's license, by the age of 16 she spent every summer, fall and winter seeking escape through the salmon and steelhead migration that frequented BC's coastal waters. Such ventures drove her to self-discovery, realization, motivation, and a hunger to escape a troubled environment in the city she called home.
Guest April Vokey is a fly fishing writer, fly-tyer, and speaker. After guiding in British Columbia for ten years, she now splits her year between camp in northern BC and Australia. She is an FFF certified casting instructor, forager, bowhunter, and mother. Summary April Vokey can't help but look at life differently. From a very early age, April loved fishing and hunting. She's decided to shun quote-unquote more traditional work and instead start a business where she would be “all in” as a fly fishing guide, provide instructional courses, write, be a keynote speaker, and host a podcast on all things related to her interests while being a wife and mother came. Her decision came with the expected challenges, but as a female in a male-dominated industry, she faced some challenges that men doing the same work would never have to face. April is also passionate about the environment and conservation, especially now that she is raising her daughter to be a steward of the Earth. I am not a fly angler, so I called up fly fishing expert April Vokey of Anchored Outdoors to challenge me on my thinking. What starts as a joke -- "Fly fishing sucks. Change my mind." -- develops into a great conversation about where and when fly gear works better than conventional, and when it doesn't. This is a fantastic into for the "fly curious" angler.
Ryan Heitz has worked at Michael and Young Fly Shop for over twenty years. For me, Ryan was the "shop guy" I looked up to when I first started fly fishing. He was—and is—an incredibly knowledgable angler who rarely boasts about his accomplishments, yet offers an open ear to those looking to share their enthusiasm and stories. In this episode of Anchored, I sit down with Ryan to ask him what it's really like being the man behind BC's most successful fly shop, and if he's found himself change throughout the evolution of fly gear, the Internet, angler mentality, techniques and more. This episode of Anchored is brought to you by South Dakota and its incredible Pheasant Hunting!
Skip Morris is the author of over twenty fly-fishing books and hundreds of fly-fishing articles. He's been a well-known personality in the fly-fishing industry long before my time and I was genuinely excited to get to know him better. Tom Morgan Rodsmiths evolved from a dream of Tom's while owning the R. L. Winston Rod Company from 1973 to 1991. He always wanted to build a limited number of superior graphite rods for appreciative anglers—rods not limited by cost or materials, fine-tuned until their actions were perfect. Sadly, Tom passed away in 2017 of pneumonia. While he is no longer with us, his legacy in rod design will continue to touch anglers for generations to come thanks to Matt Barber and Joel Doub, who bought the company before Tom's passing. In this episode of Anchored, we discuss Tom, his passion for quality rods, bamboo rod building and more. Have you ever wanted to build or own a quality bamboo rod? If you have taken our Bamboo Rod Building Masterclass with Bob Clay, you won't want to miss this episode, and if you haven't yet taken the masterclass, you might want to after listening to this conversation. In this episode of The Sustainable Angler, I interview angler, guide and Anchored podcast host April Vokey. We chat about fishing in British Columbia and Australia, where April spends half of her year these days; making fishing fun for kids; and discuss how it's ok to be overwhelmed and feel helpless with the amount of information flying around regarding climate change and multitude of conservation issues unfolding (and now Coronavirus!), taking the time to educate yourself on these important issues and just being human (the answer may be to simply get your hands dirty in your local community to avoid depression and anxiety). We also chat about April's latest business venture, Anchored Outdoors, which "is an ever-growing network of Fishing, Foraging, Hunting and Homesteading experts you've come to know and trust", as well as April's new podcast, Into the Backing, which "is a roundtable forum that takes a closer look at some of the outdoor's most contentious topics." Special thanks to April for carving some time out and hope you enjoy!
Perhaps one of the most well-know female fly anglers in the world, April Vokey has been disrupting the fishing industry for many years. So in this episode, Joe sits down face to face with April to cover everything from her days of barely paying the bills, to getting her own TV show, to the hate on social media, to the "Instagram fishing girls," to being a mum, to giving back. Enjoy!
subjects discussed:The fugitive, committing grand theft, ski doos on the river, fishing report for Gunnison, Taylor and Arkansas rivers. High water fishing on the Gunnison and Taylor, April Vokey's article on being a fishing guide, what it means to be a fishing guide on the front lines. Pitkin fish hatchery.
April Vokey has gone from relative obscurity to near-ubiquity in less than five years, but her passion for steelhead and fly fishing remains undiminished. Check in and listen to her self-reflections, her passions, and her dreams.
