Today I'm joined by Tom Landwehr and this is actually a recording from back in 2017 at the Minnesota Governor's deer hunting opener event, and this is an event that's gone on for many years here in Minnesota and I think is a great reflection of the importance of deer camp culture and the deer hunting season to our state, that the Governor would put an event like this together. Commissioner Landwehr is now ending his tour here as the as the Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources in early 2019, and so I thought it was appropriate to get this podcast recording out as the commissioner of the DNR. He is appointed by the governor to really enforce hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation laws, and also manage much of the public land that exists within the state of Minnesota. There are also federal and county lands, but they're much of it is managed by the state, which is then managed by this organization, the Department of Natural Resources for both recreation as well as industry like timber and mining. They also deal with threats to the land and water like invasive species in diseases like chronic wasting disease, that's starting to affect the deer herd in different areas of the country. Stepping back for a moment, if you look at the North American model for conservation, one of the tenants of it calls for scientific management of wildlife and habitats and state agencies are a big part of that management model. In Minnesota it's called the department of natural resources or the DNR. In other states it's called game and fish or the department of fish and wildlife or ...

To learn more about how people are using tenkara rods, Daniel visited the coast of Maine to fish with Henry Barber, a renowned rock climber who has been using Tenkara USA rods for catching striped bass on the surf, in coastal rivers and from rocks on the coast. After a couple of days of fishing, they sat down by a fire and discussed the experience. In this fourth episode of the Modern Carnivore podcast I sit down with Daniel Galhardo who is the founder of tenkara fly fishing company - Tenkara USA. His company designs, manufactures and sells equipment used in this growing trend in fly fishing called tenkara. This simple form of fly fishing has its origins in the mountain streams of Japan where it's been used to catch trout over the last couple of hundred years. The word tenkara literally means "from heaven" or "from the skies". While there are similarities to the Western-style of fly fishing, they each developed independent of each other. Daniel introduced this type of fishing to the U.S. and started Tenkara USA in 2009. Daniel was the first person to bring the method of fly fishing called Tenkara outside of Japan, and he founded Tenkara USA in 2009. This style of fly fishing is an ultra simple way to get out on the water. And that's why I think it's a great way for somebody to really dip their toe into the world of fly fishing. And even if you're familiar with Tenkara fly fishing, I think you're gonna. Enjoy Daniel's story here today, and him sharing what it's all about and why he brought it to the US. We talk about the history of the technique, how we got into it. Uh, and then we touched on the topic of killing fish, which is a complicated discussion. If you're not too familiar with fly fishing, this is a often talked about item because a lot of people who fly fish do not take any fish...it's all catch and release. And so we have a discussion on that. And then I want to point out the daniel references the coming winter in the, uh, in this episode. Do you ever wonder if other entrepreneurs are struggling with the same issues you are? Daniel Galhardo launched Tenkara USA in 2009 and has grown it into the premiere brand of Japanese-style fly fishing rods through a combination of beautiful branding and aspirational marketing. But like every founder, he struggles with the same issues all entrepreneurs do. In this episode, we discuss how he's still figuring out his product cycle and management, hiring, and the ever vexing issue of how to delegate when you already know how to do it so well yourself. We discuss how to keep things fresh when your products don't change every year, some of the ways we vet potential employees, as well as his startup story of finding manufacturers and launching the brand. Like so many of us, he's figuring it out as he goes. One of my favorite quotes from this episode is: "I still treat my business as a learning opportunity. It's fun figuring things out, even if it's the hard way sometimes." So, cast your attention this way and get ready to land some inspiration for running your own business better! Daniel, founder of Tenkara USA, has been described as a "rock-climber disguised as a fly angler", but he is also a fly angler disguised as a rock-climber. In this episode Daniel discusses how he found his two big passions in life, rock-climbing and tenkara fly-fishing, as well as how they fit together and have inspired him to start Tenkara USA. Without knowing where the episode was going to go, Daniel concludes that one shouldn't dismiss an activity after a quick glance as you may get hooked when you actually try it. And, that some activities are great complements to each other and bring us balance. Also, he brings up the newly published book by one of his climbing heroes, Hans Florine: http://onthenosebook.com/ and the giveaway campaign: http://onthenosebook.com/contest/ (the Tenkara USA giveaway will be on the week of September 19th). If you’ve been following my adventures this summer, you’ll know that I’ve been really into foraging wild protein, particularly fish, from my local landscape. I’ve grown to love the Tenkara fishing — a minimalist fly fishing method that originates in the mountains of Japan. Daniel Galhardo — founder of Tenkara USA, the first company to introduce Tenkara outside of Japan —joins us to share his passion for Tenkara and the world of trout fishing.  "A rod, line and fly. Line connects to the tip. Easy casting of a fly to spots where the fish are, intuitive landing. That's tenkara in a nutshell," according to Tenkara USA. In this interview, Daniel guides you through the basics of getting started fishing Tenkara. We discuss barriers to entering the world of fishing, fishing ethics, the complex world of Western fly fishing vs the simplicity of Tenkara and so much more. Whether you’re an avid fisherman or completely new to fishing, I hope this interview inspires you to check out this intuitive and minimalist method of fishing!  EPISODE BREAKDOWN:  Daniel responds to feedback on last week’s podcast  Exploring waterways and finding low toxicity areas to fish  What is Tenkara?  Daniel Galhardo's background in fishing  Fishing basics  Barriers to entering the world of fishing  Follow the trout  Fishing ethics: Catch & release vs Catching to eat  Barbed and non-barbed flies  How to catch and release a fish unharmed  How Daniel Galhardo got into Tenkara  The simplicity of Japanese methods  Tenkara vs Western fly fishing  How to get started with Tenkara  Talking flies  What knot to learn when you first begin Tenkara  Best practices for finding & catching fish

This week I had the pleasure of talking to Daniel Galhardo of Tenkara USA, who did a basic Tenkara podcast last year when he was visiting us. We get into a little more detail on Tenkara, especially the use of sinking flies and all the ways you can manipulate them with this method. If you are curious about this method of fishing I think you’ll enjoy it. In The Fly Box this week, we had a wide range of topics, like how to hook snakehead on a fly, which sling bag to pick, how to fish streamers, a tip on curing UV resins, whether the flex or action of the rod affects your hooking ability, and which direction salmon face when they are returning to the ocean.

Even with something as simple as tenkara, choosing your first tenkara rod may seem daunting. There are decisions to be made in terms of fish targeted and waters fished. In this episode, Daniel will walk you through the lineup of tenkara rods, tenkara lines and tenkara flies offered by Tenkara USA to help you choose your first tenkara rod. Hint: if you are having a hard time choosing, just get the adjustable Sato rod by Tenkara USA, it is ultra-light, covers the main lengths of tenkara rods, and will be a versatile rod in small and large waters alike. Sometimes it seems like part of our lives deserve a soundtrack. Nick "Takénobu" Ogawa's music has been a major part of Tenkara USA's videos. It is as if many of the songs had been composed while in the mountains. The story of how Daniel discovered Takénobu's music may sound too serendipitous to be true. But only fate could dictate that one day Daniel would be writing about tenkara just to have a song named "Fishin' " appear on the radio, and upon closer inspection he would discover the musician actually had ties to Japan. Listen to this conversation between Daniel Galhardo and Nick Takénobu Ogawa to learn more about Nick's music and for some delightful notes. Last week we were fortunate to have Daniel Galhardo, owner of Tenkara USA visit our office and he had a few minutes to stop by for a podcast interview.  In this week’s discussion, he talks about what he has learned since his original podcast with us, especially about fly patterns and the rationale for using a single fly.  He also talks about—gasp—fishing a huge streamer from Shawn Combs’ drift boat with his Tenkara rod.  So much for being a purist.   Even if you are not interested in Tenkara fishing you will probably find something of interest in this week’s podcast.  We tackle questions about rinsing gear after saltwater use, how much backing to put on a reel with a sinking line, the use of stinger hooks on saltwater flies, fishing lake-run browns and steelhead in the Great Lakes in estuaries, whether metal studs spook trout, and a great tip from a listener for cleaning your fly tying bench.

This week we're publishing an interview I did with Daniel Galhardo, founder and CEO of Tenkara USA, on guess what?  Daniel was here to sample some of our Vermont small stream fishing, which he loved, and we had a ball fishing together.  He explains Tenkara, whether he considers it fly fishing, and the basics of how to use a Tekkara outfit.  In the fly box, we talk about dealing with fishing gear in hot weather, dries vs. emergers, and setting the hook on downstream fish.
