Land Tawney is the President and CEO of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, one of North America's leading and most effective advocates for wild public lands, waters, and wildlife. Founded around a campfire in 2004, BHA uses education, nonpartisan political advocacy, stewardship initiatives, and stakeholder coalitions to ensure the protection of our public lands for generations to come. As its name implies, BHA is an organization that works on behalf of sportsmen, but you don't have to be a hardcore hunter or fisherman to benefit from its work. I'm a lot of things, but a hardcore hunter is not one of them– yet, I'm a proud member of BHA and a super-fan of all that it has accomplished. - Land was born and raised in Montana, the son of two highly respected conservationists who instilled in him a deep reverence for wild places and the importance of protecting them. From an early age, Land was hunting, fishing, and spending time around his parents' friends and colleagues, many of whom were well-known, renowned conservationists. When Land was in college, his father passed away, which fortified his desire to devote all of his professional energy to conserving the wild places that have always meant so much to his family. After successful stints at several notable conservation organizations, Land took the helm of BHA in 2013. Since then, he has led and grown the organization into one of the country's leading voices for sportsmen and public land protectors. - When Land and I connected for this conversation, he was hard at work preparing for the upcoming BHA Rendezvous, which is taking place May 12-14 in Missoula, Montana. We discuss all of the details of that premiere conservation event, and you can find additional information in the notes and on this episode's webpage. And we also covered a ton of interesting and important topics, including: the importance of advocating for conservation in Washington, DC; how apathy can be a huge threat to our wild lands; the slippery-slope threat of transferring federal lands to state or private entities; the importance of remaining optimistic in the face of challenges; how BHA helps and encourages new hunters; the importance of BHA's state chapters and local leadership; Land's personal and professional conservation journey; and, of course, he offers tons of great book recommendations. - A huge thanks to Land for joining me during such a busy time of year. And I encourage all of you to check out BHA's membership options and consider supporting them if you are so inclined. I deal with conservation organizations all day in both my podcast and conservation work, and BHA is the best of the best. In this episode, Mark and Curtis are joined by the fun, energetic, and inspiring Land Tawney, CEO of the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. The purpose of their conversation is to help Canadian hunters and anglers be effective in advocating for public land and water in Canada. With that purpose in mind, Mark and Curtis get Land to explain what makes BHA such an effective voice for conservation. Land explains what the new Great American Outdoor Act is, how much funding the Act dedicates to conservation in the United States, and how hunters and anglers helped get the bill approved. Land also talks about how BHA can rally its members behind important causes and how the grassroots approach of BHA helps the organization prioritize its campaigns. Land also imparts his philosophy about BHA as a-tell-it-like-it-is organization and why your voice is so important to politicians. The gang talks about the growth of BHA in Canada, the value of public celebrity figures who support BHA, and the common issues facing hunting, fishing, and public land conservation in Canada and the United States. Find out what challenge Mark accepts from Land for the BHA Rendezvous gathering in Missoula Montana in 2021. Land shares his vision for BHA in Canada but his answer will probably surprise you! Also, tune in to hear an important safety message about storing gas inside your SUV and Land's take on 70's avocado-coloured kitchen appliances.   Show Notes:   BHA Membership Giveaway Entry Details! Threats to the recently-enacted Great American Outdoors Act and how they would affect wild bird hunters ... just one of the topics as I interview Land Tawney, president & CEO of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, one of our newest conservation groups. We dig into the Act, how it will benefit bird hunters, why it was such a watershed for public lands, and the access it will provide hunters to new and existing publicly-owned lands. We talk about the fast-growing group, their goals, accomplishments, challenges, how "experienced" hunters are informally mentoring younger members, and why bird hunters fit the "backcountry" definition. There's also some public-access suggestions for Northeastern grouse hunters, and a real-life reason to use your hands for good, not discipline, on your dog. It's all brought to you by these sponsors:Cabela's, Sage & Braker Mercantile, Electronic Shooters Protection, Dogtra, Dr. Tim's performance dog food; Happy Jack, FindBirdHuntingSpots.com and Gunner Kennels.Take advantage of great deals from many of our sponsors: 10% off and free shipping on any purchase over $200 at Dogtra with the code SLUN10 (plus sale prices on many collar-transmitter bundles); win a Pointer shotgun at FindBirdHuntingSpots.com; 30% off your first order from Dr. Tim's with the code UPLANDNATION; and free shipping for your Gunner Kennel.

Im sure that at some point in time you've heard about the TRCP or Back Country Hunters and Anglers this year(ps i talk about being a life member to listening in the show, most life memberships have BHA, mine was the 1500$, of which i made payments and in return i got a Kimber Stainless .45 1911 the gun is worth 900$ easy!). There is a reason for that, this pretty cool cat Teddy Roosevelt, you may have heard of him, avid outdoorsman, hunter, angler, benefits, and the 26th President of the United States Of America. Ya know, just your average old guy right? To make a long story short he passed a bill that would keep a lot of the western(and other areas) lands open to the public, for hunting, hiking, nature watching, how ever we legally saw fit to enjoy them. conservationist millions of acres, a lot of which really Literally the best for farming and or cattle to weren't with so no loss right, all gain, and for EVERYONE to enjoy equally. Well here is the issue, begin, our politics is seemingly govt. when it comes to handling money, we are so far in debt that now(sadly my incompetent counterparts) are wanting to sell these lands off to help bail us out(which wont even put a dent in the problem and ultimately cost us something we can never get back in the long run), its quick and easy, heaven forbid they actually work a little bit and get a long term real conservative. Well, this is where BHA comes in, they are out there sticking their noses in the middle of all this solution congressional to make sure that our freedoms and rights and LAND arent taken away from us with out us even knowing. Their full time job is making sure we dont lose these lands and waters, look at it like Ducks unlimited, or Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, aren't Wild Turkey Federation, National forever etc, except those organizations are trying to put habitat back, instead BHA is trying to make sure IT NEVER GOES AWAY TO HAVE TO BE PUT BACK. Kind of skipping the Quail step of the process in a sense! Anyways Listen up, Land (the dude, not dirt) goes over what kind of stuff is out there now that needs attention, which is a ton sadly, and what we can do to help! here is a list of organizations including BHA that you can join or follow along with that all help make sure us outdoorsman keep our land and rights to these lands. here is the links:   http://www.backcountryhunters.org/  http://www.trcp.org/ http://www.confedmo.org/     Thanks for lsitening again and please check these orgs out!! We have quail numbers and season listening coming, same as turkey hatch and reports, duck and goose calling tactics as well as hunting tips and much much more to come so stay tuned!
