Forward Facing Sonar / Fair Chase - Modern Carnivore Podcast - (EP:051) This episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast was recorded at the 2025 Backcountry Hunters & Anglers North Country Ice Breaker. The event provided an opportunity to capture insights from three experienced outdoorsmen on the topic of fair chase. Specifically, we focused on forward facing sonar technology and how it is changing the fishing experience (and potentially catch rates). Publications like Outdoor News have been reporting on this topic for years. Some state agencies have started to address the topic directly, but many are holding tight and waiting to see where things go. Let us know if you have thoughts on how this technology can be best used, and what restrictions (if any) should be put on it.     Guests on today's podcast include: Mike Hehner from Linder Media Productions Greg Kvale - Board Member of Minnesota Backcountry Hunters & Anglers David Lien is a co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Other Posts You May Like https://modcarn.com/conservation-mcp-ep028/ https://modcarn.com/hardwater-hunters-go-darkhouse-spearfishing/ https://modcarn.com/hunting-still-relevant-mcp040/

During this conversation with Mark, they share their successes but also some of the times that hunting was very challenging for them.  This includes both mental and physical challenges.  Hunting can be both mentally and physically draining at the same time.  For example, blood trailing a deer that you have just missed your shot on.  Physically tracking through tough terrain, straining to see small amounts of blood can be very physically tiring.  At the same time, thinking about how you may have only injured the animal and the gut wrenching feeling you get while playing out possible scenarios in your head can be extremely mentally tiring as well.  This is only one of the many topics discussed with the MacGillis brothers during this episode.  Listen in to hear more! Northstar Bison - Ethical Bison Farming On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast Mark chats with Sean Graese.  Sean lives in New Mexico where he is an avid elk hunter.  However, this conversation has a little bit different topic.  Sean is a Wisconsin native where his family owns a 100% grass fed bison farm.  This journey started when his mother (a dietician) and his father (a power lifter) were trying to find the best, nutrient dense, red meat.  Thus, Northstar Bison was born.  There are a few things that set this farm apart from the rest.  The first difference is they use a feeding system called rotational grazing.  This is a practice that simulates the natural movement of the bison across the land as they use up the available resources in a particular area.  The second difference, is use a practice called, field harvesting.  Field harvesting is when the farmer harvests the needed animal in the field with a firearm.  The practice helps to reduce stress on the animal because they are harvested in the natural habitat during their daily routine.  To learn more about Northstar Bison and Sean's experience with these animals, listen in to our latest episode! This idea is what helped create the North American Conservation Model.  For example, here is how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service defines it: The North American Conservation Model Wildlife is a public resource Markets for game are eliminated Allocation of wildlife by law Wildlife can only be killed for a legitimate purpose Wildlife species are considered an international resource Science is the proper tool for discharge of wildlife policy The democracy of hunting These rules are meant to help protect our wildlife and that the government manages these resources with a science-based approach for all the people.  In addition, hunting is also a privilege of all the people and not just those with wealth and power. Hunter Recruitment, through a New Lens! On this week's episode Mark has a conversation with Torey Vayer and Lincoln Larson.  These two are researchers with the North Carolina State University's College of Natural Resources.  In contrast with many of the guest on this podcast, Torey and Lincoln are not hunters.  However, I think this makes what they have to say even more important.  They recently released their research involving thousands of students across the country.  Their research, in a nutshell, involved two main questions: Do you hunt? If not, do you have an interest in hunting?  College campuses are traditionally a very diverse place.  Since this is the case, Torey and Lincoln were able to get a very unique and diverse sample for their research.  During their research they came across a lot of interesting data.  This research can provide vital insight into the future of hunter recruitment.  Are we putting hunter recruitment dollars in the wrong place?  You will have to listen in to this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast to discover what they found! New CWD Field Test For those who don't know, CWD stands for Chronic Wasting Disease. The animals affected by this disease include deer, elk, and moose. This disease is spread through direct and indirect transmission. Direct transmission is when the animals are together and are in direct contact with each other. However, indirect is when an animal transmits the disease through the silva, urine, or other bodily materials that an infected animal has left behind in the environment.  This disease is fatal 100% of the time but can take 2-3 years to fully waste the animal. Commonly, animals with CWD appear sickly and confused. Yet, this disease is found in seemly healthy animals as well.  As a result of the lengthy period from infection to death, it can be hard to track animal exposure.  This is why testing can be one of our best and only defenses against this disease. The Importance of Testing Currently CWD has been found in 26 states across the Untied States and is spreading fast.  By testing the deer we can determine the prevalence in certain areas.  This helps the state and national wildlife departments make important CWD management decisions.  Another positive about testing is that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to eat your harvested venison.  At this point, it is not recommended to eat venison that has tested positive for CWD. The current testing process can be complicated and lengthy. In some cases it can take two or more weeks to get results. However, researchers are working hard for a solution to this problem. The MN PRO team working with the novel test for chronic wasting disease (CWD). Progress Towards a CWD Field Test for Hunters On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast Mark talks with Marc Schwabenlander and Tiffany Wolf from the University of Minnesota.  Marc is the chronic wasting disease research program and outreach manager at MNPRO.  Tiffany is an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine and co-director of MNPRO. They are two of the great minds that have created this exciting new innovation for the world of conservation.  The goal of this project is to create a faster cost-effective test for CWD. While this is only the first step in what has promise as a game-changer with CWD, it's extremely positive news. Diversity In Hunting Diversity in hunting and the inclusion of all people is a serious issue that hasn't often received enough serious attention. We in the outdoor world who hunt and fish are not immune to this. For too long the community and the industries that feed off it have been too insulated, playing only to those who were traditionally active participants. It's now time to reach out to the broader world and welcome people into the water and woods to take part in hunting, fishing and foraging. It's unfortunate that there are still hurdles to this and that it takes situations like the killing of George Floyd for people to wake up to the challenges that exist for people of color, or any other identifying characteristic that attracts judgement by others. Modern Carnivore has made a commitment to highlight these issues, to talk about them, and to continue to look for ways to eliminate barriers to entry in the outdoors. In this episode Mark's guests are Jenny Ly who is the founder of Chasing Food Club and Alex Kim who is the former diversity coordinator for Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. They're both new hunters and share their thoughts and perspectives on starting to hunt not only as an adult, but as a Vietnamese Canadian and a Korean American. At Modern Carnivore our mission has been, and always will be: ...To awaken the hunter within. We introduce people to hunting, fishing and foraging through conversations about real food. We respect each person's background and welcome them into a community that values conservation, access to public lands, fair chase of fish and game and the enjoyment of real wild food. Sally had several ailments when she was younger but found that she felt better when she had fat in her diet. This led her to researching the work of Dr. Weston A. Price and then authoring several cookbooks. She then went on to form the Weston A. Price Foundation in 1999 with Mary Enig, PhD. The organization "always aims to provide the scientific validation of traditional foodways". The work of Dr. Price definitely has it's detractors as it flies in the face of much of the modern dietary guidelines. Jamie, you are probably familiar with as he is a regular contributor on Modern Carnivore and if you haven't checked out a couple of his recent recipes, I highly recommend it. One of them is a nettle pasta and if you think about stinging nettles, they're generally something that you want to avoid when you're in the outdoors because obviously they can create a stingy irritation, uh, to your skin. But Jamie shares with everyone a recipe for turning these wild weeds into this beautiful green pasta, which I think is pretty fascinating. Another recipe he recently did was a venison heart tar-tar. If you have not eaten heart from a large angulate like a, like a deer, you're missing out. The tar tar recipe is, is essentially a way to prepare it raw and, uh, I've had heart with Jamie before and I know he knows how to prepare it very well and so I think you would find that recipe fascinating. Jamie as you know, is a wild game cook and a regular contributor, uh, Modern Carnivore. And, uh, we always love getting Jamie's perspectives on different things related to wild food. And Jenna is somebody that, uh, that we connected with, uh, this last year at the, at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers National Rendezvous in Boise, Idaho. And we just had a lot of fun talking with her about all things wild and plants and mushrooms, et cetera. Jenna lives in the state of Maine and she learned the value of wild plants as a young girl from her mother and has really carried that through into her lifestyle as an adult. She really makes a living by connecting with wild foraged items and sharing both expertise and sometimes the bounty of the forest with, with others. And, uh, and so it's fun to hear her perspectives on, on foraging. And she's also got an interesting story from the standpoint of she came to hunting as an adult. So for those of you who are considering the idea of hunting now, uh, I think she's yet one more example of somebody who came to this activity as an adult and really saw how it connects to her passion for all things wild. So we talk about foraging for wild food, which can be anything from mushrooms to plants and berries and more. Welcome to episode number eight of Modern Carnivore Podcast. Mark:   00:30       Today we're going to talk about Wilderness areas. And more specifically, we're going to take you to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is the most threatened Wilderness in the U.S. So before we get into that, let's do a little background on what we mean by wilderness with a capital w. The Wilderness Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B Johnson in 1964 and it created the National Wilderness Preservation System and it also put a legal definition around the term Wilderness. One of the primary authors of this act, Howard Zahniser, uh, defined it this way, "A Wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain. BWCAW Hunting and Fishing Mark:   01:43             It's really protective overlay that's applied to certain areas in our country; certain areas of public lands. They could be national forest parks, wildlife refuges, any number of different places. Um, one of the criticisms that has been made in the past about it is the reference to quote man himself as is a visitor who does not remain. But I think that's the critical element of it and why it is really unique. So if you think about it, there are very few places where there are no buildings, no roads, no machines, and the only really semi-permanent structures I can think of would be these throne toilets. Basically a seat to sit on and do your business and the fire grades to control where you, where you do fires. And that's specific to the Boundary Waters where we're at today. And I think that's a pretty special thing in something that is, that is needed in this world. Mark:   02:52

Today I'm joined by Tom Landwehr and this is actually a recording from back in 2017 at the Minnesota Governor's deer hunting opener event, and this is an event that's gone on for many years here in Minnesota and I think is a great reflection of the importance of deer camp culture and the deer hunting season to our state, that the Governor would put an event like this together. Commissioner Landwehr is now ending his tour here as the as the Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources in early 2019, and so I thought it was appropriate to get this podcast recording out as the commissioner of the DNR. He is appointed by the governor to really enforce hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation laws, and also manage much of the public land that exists within the state of Minnesota. There are also federal and county lands, but they're much of it is managed by the state, which is then managed by this organization, the Department of Natural Resources for both recreation as well as industry like timber and mining. They also deal with threats to the land and water like invasive species in diseases like chronic wasting disease, that's starting to affect the deer herd in different areas of the country. Stepping back for a moment, if you look at the North American model for conservation, one of the tenants of it calls for scientific management of wildlife and habitats and state agencies are a big part of that management model. In Minnesota it's called the department of natural resources or the DNR. In other states it's called game and fish or the department of fish and wildlife or ...

The word tenkara literally means "from heaven" or "from the skies". While there are similarities to the Western-style of fly fishing, they each developed independent of each other. If you're not too familiar with fly fishing, this is a often talked about item because a lot of people who fly fish do not take any fish...it's all catch and release. Now, here's your host, Mark Norquist. Mark: 00:21 Hello and welcome to this third episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast.  I recently caught up with Land Tawny and Ashley Peters when I was down in Bentonville, Arkansas. Land is the President and CEO of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, a conservation organization focused on public land issues. And Ashley is both a member out of the Minnesota chapter of that organization. Uh, but most importantly she is a new hunter. Just started hunting a couple of years ago. So today's podcast, we talk about public lands and threats to them. In this second episode of the Modern Carnivore podcast I sit down with Robyn Migliorini who is a vegan turned hunter. Robyn and her husband Nick were strict vegetarians, and then vegans, until their bodies started giving feedback indicating that they weren't getting all the nutrients they needed in their diet. However, considering the idea of bringing meat back into their diet was difficult because they originally became vegetarians in part due to all the problems with "factory farming". As a result they started exploring the idea of becoming hunters and responsibly sourcing meat themselves. Robyn's story is very engaging and her perspectives and thoughtful considerations can be appreciated by all. Now, here's your host, Mark Norquist. Mark: 00:26 Hello everyone. My name is Mark Norquist. I am your host for the Modern Carnivore podcast and I'd like to welcome you to this first episode of...our podcast. Really excited about launching this and sharing with you the conversations and interviews we've had with some really interesting people and a lot that we have coming up as many that are known and some that we'll figure it out as we go forward. People like Robyn Migliorini, Robyn grew up in Boston. She was a Vegan, started backpacking in college and eventually transitioned into becoming a hunter and was self taught. She and her husband really figured it out by watching YouTube videos and other things to really familiarize themselves with hunting. So I've got a great conversation with Robyn where she shares this journey into the world of hunting. We've also got a, an interview with Land Tawny. Land is the president and CEO of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, which if you're not familiar with it, is an organization that is fighting to keep public lands in public hands. The whole public lands issue is becoming really interesting in last few years politically on a national level, and if you're getting into hunting and other outdoor activities, whether it's camping, hiking, or what have you, you're going to want to hear that episode and understand what's at stake and what organizations like it are doing. Land is a Montana native and has really dedicated his entire career to conservation.
