Forward Facing Sonar / Fair Chase - Modern Carnivore Podcast - (EP:051) This episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast was recorded at the 2025 Backcountry Hunters & Anglers North Country Ice Breaker. The event provided an opportunity to capture insights from three experienced outdoorsmen on the topic of fair chase. Specifically, we focused on forward facing sonar technology and how it is changing the fishing experience (and potentially catch rates). Publications like Outdoor News have been reporting on this topic for years. Some state agencies have started to address the topic directly, but many are holding tight and waiting to see where things go. Let us know if you have thoughts on how this technology can be best used, and what restrictions (if any) should be put on it. This episode first aired on the Modern Carnivore Podcast, hosted by Mark Norquist. Mark was on Fish Untamed in 2021 (episode 51) and invited me up to MN to try my hand at darkhouse spearing. I decided to take him up on his offer this past January. In a nutshell, darkhouse spearing involves sitting over a large hole in the ice and throwing spears at passing fish. In reality, though, there's much more to it, and we dive into it in this episode. This episode was recorded in a brewery after one of our days on the ice at -37 degrees. The Sober Hunter - Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:038) Jonathan Norman is The Sober Hunter. Jon lives in the state of Washington and at a young age he learned that he was adopted from biological parents who had problems with substance abuse. Fast forward in his life to 22 years old and taking his first drink. This started him down the path to nearly a decade of booze, blackouts and drunken fights. One night he drank too much, got belligerent and picked a fight with a family member in front of his young son. The next morning he knew something needed to change or he'd lose everything that mattered to him. This started him down a path of learning to hunt and a life lived outdoors has been his focus ever since. He enjoys sharing this love of wild spaces, wild food and good living with anyone who will listen. But, he especially loves sharing this new life with his family. Listen to Mark's conversation with Jon about this journey to becoming "the sober hunter" and then check out @The_Sober_Hunter on Instagram which is how he stays honest with the world. The Non-Lead Partnership - Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:035) On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast, Mark talks with three representatives from the North American Non-Lead Partnership. This partnership is a formation of many different organization across the country. At this time there are 40 organizations involved. They are a hunter-focused organization that is trying to preserve the North American wildlife and hunting heritage. They aim to educate hunters about lead vs. non-lead ammunition. The three gentlemen talking with Mark during this podcast are Leland Brown, Chris Parish, and Andrew Clare. All three of these men are co-founders of the Non-Lead Partnership. Even though they spend a good deal of time growing the partnership, all three still have their typical day jobs. First off, Leland works for the Oregon Zoo. Secondly, Chris is from the Peregrine Fund. Lastly, Andrew works for the Great Basin Institute. This partnership takes a voluntary approach in switching to non-toxic ammunition. Through raising awareness and educating hunters, they are trying to increase the usage of non-toxic ammunition by hunters. These gentlemen are also hunters and it gives them pride to help lead other hunters on this journey with non-toxic ammunition. Artemis Outdoors - Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:033) On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast, we throw it back to a conversation from a couple years ago. Mark sits down with Jessi Johnson and Chelsea Cassens. Jessi Johnson is the founder of Artemis Outdoors. This organization, as Jessi describes it during the podcast, was "born of the need to see women's voices more actively represented in conservation with a hunting and fishing angle". The key topics this group tries to focus on are ethics, philosophy, women, and mentoring new hunters. Chelsea Cassens was the first ambassador for Artemis Outdoors. Chelsea grew up in a small town in Oregon where she learned all about the outdoors. She currently lives in Idaho where the outdoor opportunities are numerous. Jessi grew up in a ranching family in Wyoming where she learned about the land and all it has to offer. Like Chelsea, she also lives out West where she loves to spend time in the outdoors. They are two women from different backgrounds, grew up to love the outdoors so much that they want to share it with anyone willing to listen. Ryan is the author of the forthcoming book Gunfight - My Battle Against the Industry that Radicalized America*. Ryan Busse is a former sales and marketing executive at one of the most respected firearms manufacturers in the country. In this memoir he shares his perspectives and personal stories about how the gun industry has changed over the years. While Modern Carnivore has usually steered clear of controversial discussions, we felt that this was an important story to share. Ryan Busse has a unique perspective, as a kid who grew up on a ranch in rural America and then went on to be one of the leaders in the firearms industry. Listen in and then join us in a thoughtful conversation about the often-avoided topic of firearms and the role it plays in hunting, and our broader society. Ryan Busse, Montana Author. The MacGillis Brothers On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast, we have a story of the MacGillis brothers. Their names are Pierre, Alex, and Jim MacGillis. None of them grew up hunting, yet all found their own way to it eventually. This podcast has their unique experiences of learning to hunt. All three were brought to hunting for different reasons and at different times. However, they all have stayed with it and have no plans on stopping. During this conversation with Mark, they share their successes but also some of the times that hunting was very challenging for them. This includes both mental and physical challenges. Hunting can be both mentally and physically draining at the same time. For example, blood trailing a deer that you have just missed your shot on. Physically tracking through tough terrain, straining to see small amounts of blood can be very physically tiring. At the same time, thinking about how you may have only injured the animal and the gut wrenching feeling you get while playing out possible scenarios in your head can be extremely mentally tiring as well. This is only one of the many topics discussed with the MacGillis brothers during this episode. Listen in to hear more! Like this MacGillis brothers episode? Mercedes is a development director for this great organization. They are a large conservation organization based only in Minnesota. They boast an impressive 60 chapters and around 20,000 members. Mercedes' considers herself an "adult-onset hunter". This means that she started to get into hunting as an adult instead of the more traditional route of being taught by older family. She came from a family who does not hunt or fish. However, that did not stop Mercedes from getting into hunting and exploring all it has to offer. Andy Shoemaker Andy Shoemaker with the Minnesota Trapper's Association Followed by, Andy Shoemaker with the Minnesota Trapper's Association. Andy is very passionate about all things outdoors but more specifically, trapping. He is the director of District 6 which is the association's metro district. The number of trappers in Minnesota has gone down in recent years. There are many reasons to blame for this but one of those is that trappers tend to get a back reputation. Andy is out to change that reputation with his passion and willingness to teach anyone who shows interest. Cory Loeffer Cory Loeffler, owner and creator of DRC Calls. Fifth, Cory Loeffler, owner of DRC Calls. Cory is a lifelong hunter whose family has a long history with Game Fair. This will be Cory's 17th year in a row attending Game Fair. Cory's company makes "easy operating waterfowl calls with superior sound and craftsmanship". Cory would know superior sound because he was previously an award winning caller. Cory would compete in goose and duck call competitions and not being able to find the perfect call is what led him to start his own business. Just listening to him speak you can tell he has a passion for what he does. Keng Yang Keng Yang the Minnesota Hunter. And last but certainly not least, Keng Yang, also known as the Minnesota Hunter. Keng's passion is hunter recruitment. He started his business, Minnesota Hunter, to help as many people as possible find their way to hunting. Northstar Bison - Ethical Bison Farming On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast Mark chats with Sean Graese. Sean lives in New Mexico where he is an avid elk hunter. However, this conversation has a little bit different topic. Sean is a Wisconsin native where his family owns a 100% grass fed bison farm. This journey started when his mother (a dietician) and his father (a power lifter) were trying to find the best, nutrient dense, red meat. Thus, Northstar Bison was born. There are a few things that set this farm apart from the rest. The first difference is they use a feeding system called rotational grazing. This is a practice that simulates the natural movement of the bison across the land as they use up the available resources in a particular area. The second difference, is use a practice called, field harvesting. Field harvesting is when the farmer harvests the needed animal in the field with a firearm. The practice helps to reduce stress on the animal because they are harvested in the natural habitat during their daily routine. To learn more about Northstar Bison and Sean's experience with these animals, listen in to our latest episode! Hunters in Conservation On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast we talk about conservation. Joining Mark are guest Kyle Daly and Dan Born. Kyle is a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Dan is an archeologist and environmental analyst formerly for the U.S. Forest Service. They have both worked in wildlife studies for many years. Therefore they have great knowledge of the natural world and how hunters play a part in it. Kyle Daly Dan Born Conservation has had a long history in the United States. Historical figures in the fight for conservation have stressed the importance of public lands and waters. This is so that anyone, not just the wealthy, can have access to wild game and fish. This idea is what helped create the North American Conservation Model. For example, here is how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service defines it: The North American Conservation Model Wildlife is a public resource Markets for game are eliminated Allocation of wildlife by law Wildlife can only be killed for a legitimate purpose Wildlife species are considered an international resource Science is the proper tool for discharge of wildlife policy The democracy of hunting These rules are meant to help protect our wildlife and that the government manages these resources with a science-based approach for all the people. In addition, hunting is also a privilege of all the people and not just those with wealth and power. Hunter Recruitment, through a New Lens! On this week's episode Mark has a conversation with Torey Vayer and Lincoln Larson. These two are researchers with the North Carolina State University's College of Natural Resources. In contrast with many of the guest on this podcast, Torey and Lincoln are not hunters. However, I think this makes what they have to say even more important. They recently released their research involving thousands of students across the country. Their research, in a nutshell, involved two main questions: Do you hunt? If not, do you have an interest in hunting? College campuses are traditionally a very diverse place. Since this is the case, Torey and Lincoln were able to get a very unique and diverse sample for their research. During their research they came across a lot of interesting data. This research can provide vital insight into the future of hunter recruitment. Are we putting hunter recruitment dollars in the wrong place? You will have to listen in to this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast to discover what they found! Students learn how to hunter through program at North Carolina State University. For More on Hunter Recruitment! Hunter recruitment is crucial. Now more than ever. The number of hunters is slowly declining and we must act to reverse the trend. New CWD Field Test For those who don't know, CWD stands for Chronic Wasting Disease. The animals affected by this disease include deer, elk, and moose. This disease is spread through direct and indirect transmission. Direct transmission is when the animals are together and are in direct contact with each other. However, indirect is when an animal transmits the disease through the silva, urine, or other bodily materials that an infected animal has left behind in the environment. This disease is fatal 100% of the time but can take 2-3 years to fully waste the animal. Commonly, animals with CWD appear sickly and confused. Yet, this disease is found in seemly healthy animals as well. As a result of the lengthy period from infection to death, it can be hard to track animal exposure. This is why testing can be one of our best and only defenses against this disease. The Importance of Testing Currently CWD has been found in 26 states across the Untied States and is spreading fast. By testing the deer we can determine the prevalence in certain areas. This helps the state and national wildlife departments make important CWD management decisions. Another positive about testing is that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to eat your harvested venison. At this point, it is not recommended to eat venison that has tested positive for CWD. The current testing process can be complicated and lengthy. In some cases it can take two or more weeks to get results. However, researchers are working hard for a solution to this problem. The MN PRO team working with the novel test for chronic wasting disease (CWD). Progress Towards a CWD Field Test for Hunters On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast Mark talks with Marc Schwabenlander and Tiffany Wolf from the University of Minnesota. Marc is the chronic wasting disease research program and outreach manager at MNPRO. Tiffany is an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine and co-director of MNPRO. They are two of the great minds that have created this exciting new innovation for the world of conservation. The goal of this project is to create a faster cost-effective test for CWD. While this is only the first step in what has promise as a game-changer with CWD, it's extremely positive news. Listen in to this episode to find out more about CWD and this innovative new testing method. Urban Hunting Accessibility On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast we discuss hunting accessibility. Mark is visiting New York City where he talks with his friends Todd Waldron and David Gever. Todd is the host of the Outdoor Feast Podcast and a longtime resident of New York. David is an avid hunter that lives in the heart of Brooklyn. He experiences first-hand the challenges of living in such an urban area. Mark, Todd, and David are discussing some of the challenges of being a hunter in an urban area, such as New York City. These challenges include transportation, land access, and gun ownership laws and can make getting out to hunt and fish a hassle. This conversation is being recorded in the Metropolitan Rod and Gun Club in Brooklyn. The hunters and fisherman of the Brooklyn area founded this club in 1934. They were looking for a place to meet so they could discuss their adventures and teach new generations of hunters and fisherman. In addition, they were meeting to discuss their own hunting accessibility problems which are probably similar to the ones we are still having today. For those outside the Northeast, it might not appear that Long Island has some of the best hunting/angling opportunities. First of, Matt talks about his incredible personal journey working on a lobster boat for his father-in-law in Mount Sinai, New York. Then Gary, founder of Germanik Angler, shares his story as someone who grew up fishing and later developed an interest in hunting. While sharing his stories, Gary talks about his re-activation journey as an adult angler. In addition, he explains why he loves the term #FashionablyLateHunter. Finally, Tom talks about his transition from growing up in New York's Adirondack Mountains and then moving to Queens several years ago.
