Next, Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen joins the show to talk about all the recent changes in college sports — and he has an incredibly unique perspective. This time last year, Dannen was Tulane's AD. Soon after, he was hired by Washington. While there, he worked on the Huskies' transition to the Big Ten and had to replace a football coach when Kalen DeBoer left for Alabama. Then Trev Alberts left Nebraska for the Texas A&M AD job and Dannen was hired at Nebraska. Now he's working on a 17-item action agenda handed to him by football coach Matt Rhule. Later, Andy talks to Wisconsin's Jack Nelson, who is living a childhood dream as the Badgers' left tackle. Nelson also knows how to bring a dead engine back to life. Plus, Andy asks if Wisconsin OC Phil Longo has ever quoted Bruce Lee during a meeting. Want to watch the show instead? Nebraska athletic director Troy Danned has been in charge of Husker Athletics for four months. Talk about drinking water from a fire hose! The landscape of college athletics is changing almost daily, but the expectations haven't changed. The expectation is to win.  Troy called the Doc Talk podcast during our live show on the day he was hired. He promised to sit down with us once he got settled in, and he makes good on that promise in this Husker Doc Talk podcast edition. He was not in the basement with a beer but rather in his office in the North Stadium.  However, the topic of alcohol did come up. Nebraska is now the last team in the Big 10 Conference that does not allow beer sales. Will this change anytime soon? We ask the important question. We also dive deep into the transition of field turf to natural grass, the stadium renovation project, and so much more.  The season is just over a month away, and Dannen feels right at home in Lincoln. March has been a whirlwind month for the Nebraska athletic department, marked by significant changes at the helm. The departure of Trev Alberts, who left for a position at Texas A&M, came as a seismic shock to many - from those within the athletic department to the wider community of Nebraska and Husker fans nationwide. His move was swiftly followed by the announcement of Troy Dannen's appointment as the new Athletic Director, arriving from Washington, signaling a new era for Nebraska Athletics. The impact of Alberts's departure cannot be understated; it was a moment that reverberated across the state and amongst the Husker faithful far and wide. Yet, amidst this change, the mission remains unwavering for those at the heart of Husker Athletics: to forge a path of success on the playing fields and ensure financial robustness. By all accounts, Nebraska has managed to strike this balance well, fostering an environment of athletic and financial health. In this context of transformation and continuity, Doug Ewald, Nebraska's Executive Associate Athletic Director and Chief Financial Officer, made his return to the "Doc Talk Podcast," hosted by Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka and sponsored by BetFred Sports. A staunch Husker through and through, Ewald's dedication to the prosperity of the athletic department is palpable. In his first in-depth interview since the recent changes, he shared his initial shock at Alberts's departure and his early impressions of Dannen, noting a promising start to their collaboration. The challenges ahead for college athletics are formidable, with issues such as name, image, and likeness (NIL), pay-for-play, and specific to Nebraska, the Memorial Stadium renovation project, looming on the horizon. Moreover, the evolving dynamics of college football and the playoff system require adept leadership and a cohesive team to navigate these uncertain times. Fortunately, Nebraska is well-positioned to face these challenges, boasting a debt-free status, a dedicated fan base, and a clear vision for success both on and off the field. Ewald, who has been instrumental in the athletic department's turnaround, is eager to continue this positive trajectory alongside Dannen. Their shared commitment to excellence and resilience in the face of change holds promise for the future of Husker Athletics. As Nebraska embarks on this new chapter, the community watches with anticipation, hopeful for what the future holds under this new leadership. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - react to the Monday news that Washington has hired their next men's basketball coach, and they did it without a permanent athletic director. They start out with their initial reactions to Utah State Head Coach Danny Sprinkle accepting the same role on Montlake, what it meant that he took the job despite Troy Dannen's departure for Nebraska, the initial contract details, and what it's going to also mean for assistants like Will Conroy, Quincy Pondexter, Jerry Hobbie, and Ben Lee - as well as the rest of UW's support staff. And what is it going to mean for the remaining players on the roster and the incoming freshmen? After a quick break, the talk steers into the larger conversation about Dannen and who his replacement is going to be. It feels like Washington State Athletic Director Pat Chun has the inside track, but how far along is Washington when it comes to filling Dannen's shoes? Talk then turned to football matters, specifically the upcoming Pro Day on Thursday and the start of Spring Football the following week. Scott also provides a quick recruiting update as things really start to ramp up in that area too. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - took a day to absorb the fallout from the news that Washington Athletic Director Troy Dannen would be leaving UW after 167 days on the job to take the same job at Nebraska. And while today is the first day of what is traditionally known as 'March Madness', UW fans have been dealing lately with an entirely different type of madness.  Why? Why now? And for what purpose? So many questions, and even a day later many of those questions remain only partially answered. In the first part of the podcast, they talk about their initial reactions to the news, how this will affect things like buyouts moving forward, and also why they think Dannen's move happened now, rather than years from now. There are a number of stories that have surfaced in the last 24 hours since Dannen's departure that have certainly illuminated the situation and helped clarify some of the reasons that may have been leading Dannen out the door after less than six months on the job. After a quick break, most of the rest of the podcast talks about the vacant men's head basketball coaching position, how Dannen's departure fits into the hiring timeline for UW - did he put in enough legwork behind the scenes to allow interim AD Erin O'Connell to push a hire across the line? Will it be Utah State Head Coach Danny Sprinkle, as has been long rumored? Will the AD have to completely reset their list of candidates and go in a different direction entirely? Will they wait until a permanent AD is hired before tackling the process of making the next hire? And where is Will Conroy's place in all of this? Will he come back with an interim tag as part of an eventual move to make him Washington's next head coach? What about Quincy Pondexter's future? Ben Lee's? Mike Hopkins? The guys talk about that, the role Parker Executive Search will have in making UW's next hires. They were the group Washington used in the hiring of Jedd Fisch, their newest deputy AD Haven Fields, and they were also the group responsible for Nebraska's AD search. There's also a quick recruiting update from Scott and we wrap things up with an update on one of our favorite contributors - AANDY - and also comment on Dannen's prepared statement to Washington fans that he posted on social networks as we were wrapping up our show. Has he already found his man in Utah State's Danny Sprinkle? And how difficult will it be for Dannen to work behind the scenes knowing the coaching carousel is just warming up and a lot of other coaching vacancies are going to appear in the coming days?
