SummaryThe Build the Fort Framework is a startup methodology created by Chris Heivly, co-founder of MapQuest, that strips away adult overthinking to return founders to the first-principles instincts that produce successful companies. In this episode of High Octane Leadership, Donald Thompson sits down with Chris, a senior vice president at Techstars who has advised startup ecosystems across four continents, mentored thousands of founders, and helped catalyze more than $75 million in investment capital. The conversation covers what separates founders who win from those who get stuck, why the product you are imagining today is not the one that will make you successful, and what the Build the Fort Framework reveals about customer discovery, community building, and ecosystem design. MapQuest sold for $1.2 billion. Chris Hively has spent every year since teaching founders how to build something that outlasts them.Episode Long DescriptionChris Heivly is the co-founder of MapQuest, the navigation platform acquired for $1.2 billion, and the creator of the Build the Fort Framework, a startup methodology now used across Techstars ecosystems on four continents. As a senior vice president at Techstars, Chris has helped catalyze more than $75 million in investment capital and co-founded Raleigh Durham Startup Week, which grew from 8 volunteers and 400 attendees to 49 volunteer leaders and 1,500 attendees while being designed so that no single person is indispensable to its survival. In this episode of High Octane Leadership, Donald Thompson and Chris Hively dig into the pattern recognition that comes from working with thousands of entrepreneurs across dozens of cities and countries, and why the fundamentals of building a great company have not changed even as the tools around them have. Chris shares why the product you are imagining today is not the one that will make you successful, why great mentorship is peer to peer and never assigned, and why the Build the Fort framework works because it strips away the adult overthinking that kills most ideas before they ever get started. The Build the Fort Framework is a founder methodology that replaces complex startup theory with the same instincts a child uses when building something from nothing: start with what you have, talk to the people around you, and build before you overthink.Donald Thompson and Chris Hively also discuss AI, what it means for founders, and why Chris is more curious about this technology than anything he has seen in decades, and what he and Donald are quietly plotting for the Triangle entrepreneurship community.“Talk to 100 people before you write a single line of code," advises Chris Hively, co-founder of MapQuest and creator of the Build the Fort Framework, drawing on lessons from advising thousands of founders across four continents at Techstars.Key Talking Points:What is the Build the Fort Framework? The Build the Fort Framework is Chris Heivly's startup methodology that replaces complex startup theory with the first-principles instincts most adults have been trained to ignore. Why should founders talk to 100 people before writing code? Talking to 100 potential customers before building anything is the single most important discipline Chris Hively has taught across thousands of founder conversations at Techstars, and most founders still skip it.What is hyper mentorship and why does it outperform assigned mentorship? Hyper mentorship is peer-to-peer, two-directional, and self-selected, and Chris Hively's work across Techstars ecosystems consistently shows it outperforms every formally assigned mentorship program. How do you build a startup ecosystem that outlasts its founders? Raleigh Durham Startup Week grew from 8 volunteers and 400 attendees to 49 volunteer leaders and 1,500 attendees because Chris Hively designed it from the beginning so that no single person is indispensable to its survival. How are founders getting AI wrong? Chris Hively believes founders are applying a powerful new tool to unvalidated ideas, and his answer is the same one the Build the Fort Framework always starts with: talk to 100 people before building anything.Chapter Markers00:00 - Who Is Chris Heivly? "The Pigs Are at the Trough" From Nvidia to Drones: Trump's National Security Fire Sale

The pigs are at the trough. Trump's expected overseas real estate income has tripled to $430 million in his second term. Eric Trump is doing deals in China while Taiwan goes unmentioned and Iran keeps arming the people killing Ukrainians and Americans. Nvidia's CEO is being paraded around as the administration floats opening AI chip markets to Beijing. Don Jr. is tied to a drone company that just landed a Pentagon contract — inside a defense budget heading toward $1.5 trillion, a 40% spike with no apparent guardrails on family conflicts of interest. This isn't politics. It's a national security fire sale, and the Angry Middle smells it. This solo briefing connects the dots the legacy press keeps siloed: the foreign income filings, the Saudi-linked licensing deals, the Pentagon trough, Kash Patel's reality-TV FBI tour, and the lesson from Hungary — that corruption, not ideology, is what finally moved Orban's voters. With 45% of Americans now independent and 60% of young people unaffiliated, the rigged two-party system is on notice. The question isn't whether people are furious. It's whether that fury gets channeled into November, into independent veteran candidates, and into the structural reforms — the Raskin list and beyond — that should already be law. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Join IVA and stand up to Trump's Forever Wars. -Learn more about Paul's work to elect a new generation of independent leaders with Independent Veterans of America. -Learn more about American Veterans for Ukraine here. -Remember Independent is an Attitude. -Learn more about The Headstrong Project for Veterans, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and Department of Veterans Affairs resources in your area. This is a potent threshold week. You may feel both the quickening of change and the weight of what is being asked to release. There's nothing wrong with you if it feels intense. This is part of a real initiation in the larger spiral of change. We are moving through a moment where personal experience and collective reality are tightly interwoven. The instability we are witnessing in the world, including ongoing war and forms of leadership shaped by deep wounding, is not separate from our inner process. It is part of the same field. The invitation is to stay present without collapsing or turning away.Tuesday, April 28 — Venus in Gemini trines Pluto in AquariusThe Relational One meets the Transformer. This opens a doorway for deeper, more honest connection. Conversations may carry unexpected truth. Venus in Gemini invites curiosity and new ways of relating, while Pluto in Aquarius works at a collective level, reshaping how we connect within rapidly changing systems. This is an early glimpse of a larger shift that will unfold as Uranus moves into Gemini. Notice where your way of connecting is evolving. Stay curious.Friday, May 1 — Full Moon at 11° Scorpio (trine Jupiter in Cancer)This is deep water. Scorpio Full Moons bring emotional truth, revealing what we hold tightly beneath the surface. With Jupiter in Cancer, there is support for integration and care. This Full Moon aligns with Beltane, a seasonal threshold honoring life force, creativity, and the fire of becoming. There is a powerful paradox here. Beltane brings vitality and emergence, while Scorpio asks for depth and release. True aliveness includes both.Something may soften, open, or be revealed. Old patterns rooted in control or protection may feel less stable. At the collective level, this intensity mirrors the power struggles and fear-based actions we are witnessing. The invitation is to stay present with what is real without losing your center. Also Friday — Venus in Gemini sextile Saturn in AriesThis brings grounding and maturity into relationships. Small, clear choices matter. Honest communication and clean boundaries support stability within change.Friday — Mercury in Aries conjunct Chiron in AriesA tender but important moment. Words may touch old wounds around voice and self-expression. There is also healing here. New language can emerge that is more truthful and less reactive. Stay gentle. This is about being real, not perfect.Saturday, May 2 — Mercury enters TaurusA shift into steadiness. The mind slows down and begins to integrate. After the intensity, this supports grounding and embodiment. Let things land.Reflection Questions:Where am I being invited to tell a deeper truth in how I relate? What emotional truth is surfacing that I might usually avoid? How can I stay present to both my inner experience and the wider world without losing my center?Podcast poem: Trough by Judy BrownIf you'd like support in understanding your personal astrology cycles during these times, I offer a small number of one-on-one sessions. Trough Creek State Park – Where rugged cliffs, creeks and waterfalls shape a wild landscape

Hemlocks to Hellbenders

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2026 29:44

When I was on my journey of running one mile in all-then 121 Pennsylvania state parks in 2021, I took notes after every run. It was an effort to make sure I would remember my experiences. I'd take notes like, I spotted a fox here. Or I fell there. Or I want to hike the full trail here. But one of the most important pieces of information I recorded was my overall feeling of the park. It's difficult to get a sense of a natural landscape in just one mile, often running half a mile one way and then running half a mile back the same way. But some places just stand out and beg to be explored some more. Here's what I wrote about Trough Creek State Park on March 13, 2021. “Well, this place is incredible. I have to come back.” It only takes a few seconds at Trough Creek to realize it's special. And that it deserves more time to be explored. You even get that sense by just driving through the park. Traveling through the scenic gorge along the Great Trough Creek you see signs for Balanced Rock, Rainbow Falls, Ice Mine, Copperas Rocks, Paradise Furnace Cemetery and the suspension bridge.Your mind can't help but get excited by the idea of what the heck all these things are and how you can go see them. For outdoors people it feels like entering a theme park. What ride do I go on first? And with so many of these wonderful features, you'd expect it to be huge. Some place you'd need a week to explore. But that isn't the case. At less than 600 acres with only 12 miles of hiking trails, you can see most if not all of it in a weekend. But this isn't a one and done sort of park. Once you visit Trough Creek, it sinks its hooks into you. Its trails, its views, it's features beckon you for many more visits. Despite the fact that Trough Creek is more than two hours from me, I've been there multiple times while passing other great state parks along the way. It is just that damn cool. And no matter how many times I've been there, I want to keep going back. And that's about the biggest complement I can give to a state park. On this episode, I speak with Michael Garbinsky. Min 5: SALVADOR.

After 30 years in radio and TV, watching politicians off-camera in green rooms, I've had enough of the act. On screen they shout, sneer and pretend to hate each other. Off screen they laugh, joke, slap backs and sneer at how stupid they think voters are. Today I'm saying what millions suspect but the media won't admit: Westminster isn't about public service — it's about careerism, ego and performance. Is politics just showbiz for ugly people? Does Westminster corrupt decent people — or does it only attract the wrong ones in the first place? From expenses scandals to fake party rivalries, from cosy BBC panels to MPs who've never done a real job, this is the reality they don't want discussed. No script. No filters. No apologies. You decide — I'll tell you what I've seen. On this weeks' Debate, Brian brings a truckload of acronyms for more single panes of glass to help us consolidate our various single panes of glass, Erik may actually be Brian (or maybe Brian is Erik), and Dan confirms he still (and likely always will) spend the rest of his days living in the house he just built deep in the Trough of Disillusionment. What started out as a chat about some new technologies in the space turned into a treatise on the state of leadership and the future talent pipeline's need for more curiosity (and why we think they are starved of the opportunity to learn to be curious). Along the way we talk about what motivates organisations to do security right from the get go vs leaving it alone based on difficulty to remediate, and the risk balances of both (think: productivity vs security). Throw in a little “binary opinions have dragged us into the mire” and you've got a full episode of The Great Security Debate. We also drop some hints about a new show coming from The Distilling Security network in 2026 called The Final Act which will bring guests in the later stages of their careers about the urgency of our careers in security and tech, what they want to leave behind as legacy, and what they are doing to prepare their orgs for their eventual departure. Add on how they have and will give back to the community, and what their successors want to see done before this first generation of security and tech leaders hit the road. Please subscribe and leave a comment. In this groundbreaking episode, I welcome Dr. Danielle Harel and Celeste Hirschman, founders of the revolutionary Somatica Method, to explore how pleasure, embodiment, and emotional expression can transform your sexual experiences and relationships. We dive deep into why performance-based sexuality kills intimacy, how shame disconnects us from our bodies, and why pleasure can be a powerful entry point for healing trauma. Discover why many people don't know what they want sexually, how kinks and fantasies can become tools for emotional liberation, and practical techniques using breath, sound, and body awareness to unlock blocked energy.  Whether you're struggling with intimacy, recovering from sexual trauma, or simply want to deepen your connection with pleasure and your partner, this episode offers a compassionate, body-based approach to sexual healing that goes far beyond traditional therapy.
