Oh boy, it's time! I'm finally at the end of The Dark Lord Of Derkholm and I'm really really surprised at the way everything wraps up. In some ways, I found the ending of this book very satisfying. Everyone is dealt with, everything gets explained, mysteries are revealed...but it's a little bit abrupt, as if Wynne Jones realized she was nearing the page limit on her manuscript and decided that she'd better wrap everything up. Also, I'm not sure that I'm totally understanding this correctly, but did is the demon that Derk summoned the romantic mate of Chesney's demon? Is this a personal vendetta this demon has? Thank you so so much to Patricia for commissioning this episode and this ENTIRE BOOK. This was so much fun to read! I hope you all enjoyed the coverage!

Many thanks to Patricia for commissioning the next chapters of The Dark Lord Of Derkholm! These chapters are CRAZYTOWN BANANAPANTS. First of all I would like to register my smugness that Kit is in fact alive, but that smugness is somewhat mitigated by the revelation that there's a fucking underground gladiator ring running in this world, and Blade was about to be fucking killed! This is really some shit. This book is absolutely packed with weird twists and turns, and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Thank you so much to Patricia for commissioning this live-read! Wow, where to start with what happened in this episode? Don't read any farther if you don't want to get spoiled, and you prefer to listen to me read you the book! First we have Blade getting whisked away to who knows where and nobody can find him, we've got more cities turning up empty, and then we've got Kit getting shot out of the sky by a bunch of soldiers. Oh yeah and apparently there's a whole resistance built around Mara's part of the tour, which is really fascinating and seems to be working like a charm. Pun intended. Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

It's time for another romp in the magical universe where griffins and children can be brother and sisters, people from our world can be trucked in as tourists, and gods will appear at random. This section is the one where Blade is dealing with his pilgrim party, and they all seem like The Worst. It's super funny to me how repulsed he is by the girl coming onto him all the time, and thank goodness for Shona, am I right?

We’re roaring into 2019 like teenage griffins thanks to Diana Wynne Jones’ Dark Lord of Derkholm! Revisit cruel capitalist overlord Mr. Chesney and learn whether you, too, are more affected by this book as an adult. Inspired by the trials and tribulations of the Pilgrim Party organizers (and the pilgrims themselves), Grace relives her worst job and Madeleine her worst camping experience. This one really took us back! Plus: decide whether Derk is initially a bit of a jerk, wonder at exactly what Lydda’s godlike snacks are, and reflect on just how incredible DWJ is (again and again). This episode was a listener request - thanks, Tim! This section of The Dark Lord Of Derkholm is giving me so much agita! It's hard enough knowing that everyone is working so hard and yet being undermine by a saboteur the whole time, but then we're getting whole towns of people disappearing and I don't know what to think about that. I don't know where to start on talking about this section, to be honest. Should I begin with the fact that Shona was kicked out of school based on a policy that she knew nothing about? Should I begin with everyone who wants to talk to Derk the moment they show up at camp (which, by the way, is in the wrong place)? Should I begin with Blaze realizing that his damn tour starts in 2 days and he has no clue what he's doing? Thank you all so much for listening, and thanks to Patricia for sponsoring this episode!

Many thanks to Patricia Bing-Grant for commissioning this episode of The Dark Lord Of Derkholm! This is a really fun book and you can tell how much I like it on account of how I sound like I'm on death's door but I wanted to podcast anyway. So, it turns out that Barnabas is actually doing everything he can to fuck up works, by order of Querida. She's hoping that if Mr. Chesney's plan goes badly enough, he will decide that continuing these pilgrim tours isn't actually worth it. It's a solid plan, and I get why she's only told a couple of people, but it sucks to see our friends running their butts off to fix problems that cannot be fixed. Also, it's pretty satisfying to see Scales show up and scare the shit out of all the troops so that they actually follow instructions and get moving. There is, however, a really unfortunate sexual assault included in the story that doesn't serve any purpose at all so far as I can see. Didn't care for that. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you again to Patricia for commissioning The Dark Lord Of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones! These chapters are where we see what Derk's poor kids have to deal with while he's down for the count, and I'm going to warn you right now; I get a little preachy this episode. Listen, I hardly feel like I'm out of line on this one; Diana Wynn Jones clearly has some things to say about the way the prison system works, and I feel like I'm just able to expand on that. There are a lot of layers to the way she writes things, and this situation with the soldiers who are really prisoners is no different. When Derk wakes up, we find out that the dragon (who goes by Scales) was working on healing him from afar, because he felt so stupid and guilty for burning him up the way he did, which is a really cool thing that I didn't know dragons could do. Derk is a good leader, and knows how to give all of his kids jobs that play to their strengths and make them feel like they're useful and important. I am really enjoying this book. Welcome back to the Wonderful World Of Wynne Jones! I'm here with another episode sponsored by Patricia, and I really want you to read along so do yourselves a favor and get the book for yourself here! https://amzn.to/2qTh7YgSo in these chapters, Derk summons a demon. It goes much worse than I expected, because the demon's mere presence is like acid on the skins of all the people who come in contact with it, and it doesn't stick around to cause mayhem where we can see it. Oh no, it darts away in a shot of blue lightning and we have no idea what it's doing now. You know the old adage about how the only worse thing than finding a spider in your room is finding a spider and then losing it? There's some other fun stuff here, too. Mainly I'm interested in gods in this universe and how they work, and it's pretty cool that Wynne Jones has put some thought into how that works. I'm a big fan of this temple and the priest that Derk visits, and I would very much like to go there. Thank you again to Patricia for commissioning this! I'm loving it.

Hello again, lovelies! I'm here with the next episode of The Dark Lord Of Derkholm thanks to Patricia, and I'm finally starting to understand more of what the hell is going on in Derk's family. Turns out that Dark used some of his and his wife's DNA in the creation of the griffins, so when Blade thought to himself that they were brothers and sisters, he meant that literally. They are related by blood, and there's something simultaneously creepy and sweet about that. Turns out that Kit, one of the largest griffins, is a real piece of work and has been acting up lately because he's got magic and intended to keep it secret. He caves the roof in right after Pretty breaks the arms of the snake lady, and in general there are a lot of emergencies happening in this section. Thanks so much for listening, and see you soon with a new episode!

Oh boy, it's time for me to start on a new book, and it's another one by Diana Wynne Jones! This time Patricia has commissioned The Dark Lord Of Derkholm, and I'm completely blindsided by how very different in tone this one is from Fire & Hemlock. The gist of the story so far is that there's a fantastical land that's somehow under the thumb of an insufferable man that I believe is from our world, named Mr. Chesney. He brings people from our world over for these extravagant pilgrimages and all of the people in the fantasy world are forced to drop everything and roleplay for the sake of a bunch of tourists who are interested in nothing but their little live D&D game. And the people of the fantasy realm have had about enough. I'm into it. Thanks to Patricia for the commission, and you can find the book here if you'd like to read along! https://amzn.to/2JoPJtz
