Okay, don't panic! No, you've probably never heard of this song "The Field" -- or maybe even this show --Octet -- but what if I told you it was Dave Malloy's follow up to The Great Comet? And then what if I told you it was a weird chamber musical about internet addiction? Well, maybe listen to the episode anyway, and join us as we discuss the nature of Art, whether the internet is bad, and the fundamental nature of reality. Y'know, the stuff of musicals. Stay tuned for a cameo or two from living legend Jessica Hecht, who stars alongside Amber in this timely new play. Our fabulous guest reminisces on collaborating with Dave Malloy and Rachel Chavkin, leading to her turn as Hélène in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Which version of Comet was her favorite? Listen and find out! We also discuss Amber's character in Here We Are, Claudia, resembling RHONY's Sai de Silva, Squid Games, farm to table recipes, and more. I have vivid memories of the night of March 22, 1997. Part of it has to do with, y'know, young dumb love—but most of it has to do with the Hale-Bopp Comet, also known as the Great Comet, which was brilliantly visible from my hometown that night. I had a huge crush on this guy, and he invited me to watch the comet with him. We climbed up on the rooftop of this neighborhood bar with a bottle of screw-top wine, and we watched the sky—and suddenly, there it was, a bright silvery ball with a long glowing tail. Magic. I'll never forget it—wrote some bad poetry about it later that night. And then a couple mornings later, I woke up to the strangest news story of my life. A group calling themselves Heaven's Gate had taken their own lives en masse out in California—and they'd left behind a video explaining why. They were catching a ride on the comet, with the full certainty that it would take them to paradise. They were leaving their human bodies behind, chasing the pure perfection of enlightenment. These were smart, educated people with families who loved them. What led them to this? Join us for the story of one of the deadliest cults in American history: Heaven's Gate. As soon as it was announced that the musical NATASHA, PIERRE AND THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, written by Dave Malloy would be receiving its UK premiere at the Donmar Warehouse in London, Mickey-Jo was hugely excited to book tickets. After catching the show a little after its opening night, Mickey-Jo is sharing all of his thoughts about the cast, material, and creative choices in this full review. • The musical, inspired by a section of Tolstoy's War and Peace, follows Natasha Rostova, who falls for a charismatic aristocrat while awaiting her fiancé's return from the front lines. Pierre, an unlikely hero, steps in to restore her reputation. It was nominated for 12 Tony Awards on Broadway in 2017, after originally running at the Ars Nova in 2012. Set to appear in the show will be Declan Bennett (Pierre), Chumisa Dornford-May (Countess Natasha Rostova), Daniel Krikler (Fedya Dolokhov), Eugene McCoy (Prince Bolkonsky/Andrey), Annette McLaughlin (Marya Dimitriyevna), Maimuna Memon (Sonya Rostova), Jamie Muscato (Anatole), Cedric Neal (Balaga), Chloe Saracco (Mary) and Cat Simmons (Helene Kuragina Bezukhova), with Andrew Berlin, Kimberly Blake, Ali Goldsmith, Chihiro Kawasaki, Nitai Levi and Annie Majin. • 00:00 | introduction 02:23 | synopsis / material 11:20 | production 20:18 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. The service industry has always been in actor Vasily Deris' blood, seeing as how his family owned a group of restaurants in Crown Point IN just south of Chicago. He had been working 12 hours a day in multiple restaurants each for more than a decade but his true calling is on the stage; any and all stages. Since deciding to refocus his existence into the lights he's taken his powerful singing and acting talents to many hallowed Chicago stages in performaces of Bat Out Of Hell: the Meatloaf Musical, Groundhog Day, Kinky Boots, and is currently finishing a 2 month run at Writers Theater in Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812. But his biggest break may have been landing an agent which pretty quickly turned around into impactful screentime on FX's The Bear, Shining Girls Apple TV+, Showtimes Shameless and now a holiday feature film with Ben Stiller coming later this year. The SAG-AFTRA strike stuck a dagger in not just his work but the entire biz and Vasily still has a toe in the service industry. But you may want to put your order in quick because soon he'll be too busy.

If we find ourselves off track in life, how can we ground ourselves and find our flow again? When Josh Groban first stepped on stage as a shy 7th grader assigned a solo by his music teacher, his own mother didn't know he could sing. Fast-forward three decades, and Josh has sold 35 million records worldwide. Josh's rise to fame as a singer, songwriter and actor happened relatively quickly, he says, and along the way, he sometimes lost sight of what he cared about, pursued the wrong things, and experienced loneliness and depression. Through those difficult times, Josh sought therapy and built deeper connections with loved ones and learned to turn to them for support. In this episode, Dr. Murthy and Josh Groban explore the challenges of navigating life when it becomes overwhelming, the power of the arts to heal, the importance the arts for young people, and how music has the power to transport us. (07:09) Did Josh ever imagine his music could bring healing for people? (09:30) Why are teachers so important for young artists? (08:18) How Josh dealt with self-doubt (23:01) What helped ground Josh as his fame grew? (27:03) How does Josh know when he's chasing the right things? (33:34) How does Josh find the balance between hustle and flow? (40:32) The isolation of fame (49:43) The courage to work with a therapist (55:30) The power behind Josh's song “River” (01:04) What do the arts do for our mental health & well-being? (01:07:36) How is Josh Groban supporting the arts for young people? (01:10:12) Why does Dr. Murthy feel so connected to Josh Groban? (01:13:36) Why should we pursue experiencing the arts in our lives? (01:17:02) Where has Dr. Murthy turned for inspiration or solace in music? (01:18:47) Can we create more access to the arts for young people and turn STEM to STEAM? Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls Josh Groban, Singer and Actor Instagram: @joshgroban Facebook: @joshgroban About Josh Groban Josh Groban possesses one of the most outstanding and instantly recognizable voices in music. We pause the reading of the Wake this week to look back on Book One: HCE, ALP, Shaun, Shem and Izzy have led us on a wild, rumour-filled ride, and we want to process that before we move on! In a free-wheeling conversation, we consider Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812, theatre riots, The Magus, Beowulf, the prophetic dream lucidity of Buffy Summers, Cain's Jawbone, I Think You Should Leave, and The Midnight Gospel's Dada roots. Come for the typical lack of analytical depth, stay for the soon-to-be-regretted promise that the podcast will culminate not only with tattoos, but with a stage adaptation about TJ's hero, Festy King. Dylan and Connor are joined by Grace McLean (Suffs, Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812). On a sweet summer's day, this icon called in from upstate to get into some DRAMA. Grace is known for delivering show-stopping, standout performances on stage, and she brings that same energy to the pod! We cover her remarkable career, starting with her current turn as President Woodrow Wilson in Suffs on Broadway. Brushes with Bill Clinton, HRC's Tonys regalia, and the brilliance of Shaina Taub are all covered. Grace walks us through her multiple (!!!) times playing male characters, with hopes of Sweeney Todd alongside friend of the pod Max Jenkins. We reminisce on Grace's iconic Broadway debut as Marya in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, as well as returning to the Imperial Theatre in Bad Cinderella alongside her hunks and Carolee Carmello. Listen in for behind the scenes tales from Grace's time in Sleep No More, the process of writing her musical In the Green, and hilarious tales from her country estate. As part of Mickey-Jo's trip to New York, he got to catch THE NOTEBOOK at the Schoenfeld Theatre, a new musical adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel. Check out his ★★★★ review for his thoughts on this emotive musical and where it lets the rain in a little... The three-time Tony Award-nominated musical The Notebook, one of the most cherished contemporary love stories, is on Broadway starring 2024 Tony nominees Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett. The Notebook started as a 1995 bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, which was then adapted into a 2004 fan-favorite movie starring Academy Award nominees Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Now, Ingrid Michaelson sets the timeless story to music: the indie singer-songwriter contributes original music and lyrics that breathe new life into the story of lovers Noah and Allie. A Broadway alum, Michaelson appeared as Sonya in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812; now she returns as a first-time Broadway creative. In The Notebook on Broadway, an elderly man reads a romantic story to a female patient in a nursing home. The chapters that follow unlock a breathtaking love story, whisking the patient and the man back to their youth and providing the details that, as they age, will tragically connect them. Decades earlier, Allie and Noah were star-crossed lovers: Military drafts, family ties, and opposing classes all threatened to separate their love, but they have a once-in-a-lifetime relationship that endures for decades. Two Broadway powerhouses direct this new production, which premiered at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Michael Greif, a four-time Tony Award nominee for electric productions like Rent and Next to Normal, co-directs The Notebook musical alongside Schele Williams, who is directing the 2024 The Wiz revival. Also on the team is librettist Bekah Brunstetter, who earned three Emmy nominations writing for This Is Us. The cast includes Tony Award-winner Maryann Plunkett as Older Allie, Dorian Harewood as Older Noah, Joy Woods as Middle Allie, Ryan Vasquez as Middle Noah, Jordan Tyson as Younger Allie, John Cardoza as Younger Noah, Andréa Burns as Mother/Nurse Lori, and Carson Stewart as Johnny/Fin. Playing various roles are Yassmin Alers, Alex Benoit, Chase Del Rey, Hillary Fisher, Jerome Harmann-Hardeman, Dorcas Leung, Happy McPartlin, Juliette Ojeda, Kim Onah, Charles E. Wallace, and Charlie Webb. • 00:00 | introduction 02:20 | overview / synopsis 08:31 | the material 16:29 | casting approach 21:52 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. Do you have that one spot in the city where your phone calls always get dropped? Or that place in your house where cell service is nonexistent? According to a new story from Denver Post reporter Megan Ulu-Lani Boyanton, the trees on your block might be to blame. Megan joins host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love to dig into the cell service dilemma, along with her forthcoming story, just in time for Valentine's Day — does Denver still live up to its nickname “Menver,” a place overflowing with single men? Plus, the welcome closure of that exploitative animal entertainment joint in Southwest Plaza Mall, an expansion of tenants' rights, and more Stanley cup drama make our list of Rocky Mountain highs and lows of the week. We talked about some of Westword's past "Menver" coverage, which you can read here. Megan mentioned the Girls Gotta Eat podcast episode about dating in Denver. If you have thoughts on Denver's “Menver” nickname or want to share your Mile High dating experience, you can reach Megan via email: mboyanton@denverpost.com. What do you think? What makes a particular intersection worse than another? Or more dangerous? Or just plain rage-inducing? From the urban streets we treat like speedways to ‘spaghetti monster' highway interchanges to that one building drivers can't stop crashing into, our listeners shared tons of suggestions for the worst roadways in the city. So we invited Denver7's “Traffic Guy” Jayson Luber to help answer some of your voicemails and texts about Denver's worst intersections, and break down why we love to hate them. Bree mentioned new data showing Colorado pedestrian and cyclist deaths reached an all-time high in 2023. For more from Jayson, check out his podcast Driving You Crazy on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. What do you think is the worst intersection in Denver? Or is there one you actually really like? We want to hear from you. It's Tuesday, and we're talking about all the stories that matter in Denver this week. First, Secretary of State Jena Griswold is concerned about deepfakes and other AI-generated material impacting Colorado elections and she's asking the legislature to take the issue seriously. But how? Then, just as bicycle activists declare victory over NIMBYs on 7th Avenue, a new transit fight is brewing over the soon-to-be-constructed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line on Colfax Ave. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi break down these stories, plus they dare to take on the Denver Post's divisive question facing all Coloradans: How do you pronounce “Buena Vista”? The request for proposals for bus stop art along the upcoming Colfax Avenue BRT line is open through February 11. The group opposing BRT, Keep Calm, has a meeting this Thursday at Capitol Heights Presbyterian Church. Paul talked about this episode of the New York Times' Hard Fork podcast digging onto AI election concerns. One of Denver's richest men just won another major ruling in a years-long legal battle with his own nieces over the mozzarella empire he built on 38th Avenue. James “Jim” Leprino will maintain sole control of 85% of the global market for pizza cheese through his company Leprino Foods. But how did this reclusive billionaire first corner the market? And why did his own family take him to court? Producer Paul Karolyi spoke with reporter Helen Xu (also known as Helen X) back in December 2022 when all this juicy succession drama was first revealed in the courtroom. Season Three of Live from Mount Olympus begins! A tiny newborn is abandoned in the forest of Arcadia. Raised by bears, the baby grows up fierce and strong, with the wild and beautiful heart of the forest beating inside her. Yet when she ventures into the human world, everyone she meets thinks they're doing her a favor by telling her how to dress and act and be, and she must fight to decide for herself who she is and where she belongs.
