Okay, seriously—what is going on with *The Rotten Horror Picture Show* lately? First, Clay and Amanda talk about *House of Wax*. Then they dive into *Tourist Trap*, which is basically *House of Wax* but somehow weirder. THEN they spend their Patreon episode talking about the remake of House of Wax, which is also kind of a remake of Tourist Trap. And now? Now, when they SHOULD be discussing The Others, they're going off script to discuss Blood and Black Lace, Mario Bava's Giallo classic… and wouldn't you know it, this one's packed with mannequins too! Why? Why do we keep doing this?! Look, I get it—mannequins, wax figures, lifeless-yet-human-shaped things add to the eerie atmosphere. And *Blood and Black Lace* is a stylish, brutal murder mystery full of shadowy figures, high-fashion horror, and, yes, mannequins posed in unsettling ways. It's one of the defining films of the Giallo genre, setting the stage for all the masked killers and elaborate murder sequences that would come after. Clay and Amanda are about to break it all down—the stunning cinematography, the iconic score, and how Bava turned a glamorous fashion house into a place of pure terror. But I have to ask… why do horror movies love mannequins so much? They're not alive, but they *almost* look like they could be. Their empty eyes follow you. They stand there, silent, waiting. And somehow, *somehow*, this podcast keeps circling back to them like it's some kind of cruel joke. So, if you're brave enough to stare into the cold, plastic void, join Clay and Amanda for their deep dive into *Blood and Black Lace*. As for me, I'll be listening with my back against the wall, just to make sure nothing *moves* behind me. And, for the love of all that is holy, can we please pick a movie next time that doesn't involve mannequins?!
Well, folks, it's time for another episode of *The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast*! This time, Clay and Amanda have used their wildcard spot to talk about the delightfully weird 1979 cult horror classic, *Tourist Trap*. If you've never seen it, you're in for a treat—creepy mannequins, unsettling psychic powers, and a totally bonkers villain make this one a standout in the world of backroads horror. Clay and Amanda bring their usual charm and thoughtful analysis to this bizarre little gem, diving into everything from the eerie atmosphere to the practical effects and why this oddball deserves more love in the horror canon. Honestly, *Tourist Trap* is the kind of movie that sticks with you—and not just because those mannequins give you the stink eye.If you're wondering why Tourist Trap, and why now, well it all has to do with this year's set of Patreon episodes, all about remakes and reboots! January's film is House of Wax, and if you want to see how Tourist Trap figures into it, well head over to patreon.com/thepenskyfile and join the fun! Now, I gotta tell ya, watching this movie hit a little close to home for me. See, I run a roadside attraction myself, and I just don't get why people don't stop here! I mean, I've got a *pristine* collection of old shoes with mismatched shoelaces. Every pair's unique, every lace tells a story—what more could anyone want? But no, people zoom right by me for some fancy giant frying pan or, I don't know, the world's biggest paperclip. It's enough to make a guy feel like a mannequin himself—just frozen, watching the world pass him by. So, tune in to hear Clay and Amanda break down *Tourist Trap* and its peculiar charms. And hey, next time you're out on the road, maybe take a little detour to see my shoe collection. Sure, it's no psychic mannequin nightmare, but it's got heart! And laces! So many laces! Anyone? Please?

Susie is over the moon after having met her lifelong inspiration and hero, musical genius Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. She can't even articulate how amazing it was, but if you ever get the chance to meet your hero, DO IT! We discuss the Martha Stewart documentary, which is amazing, and how her complicated psyche and quirky personality make for fascinating psychological viewing. We talk about the Join or Die documentary that explores why civic associations are so important and why we must get involved. Susie reveals how a Brainiac is using Brain Candy clips to teach his students about implicit bias, and we are SOOO excited about it. Who knew the NFL ate so many Uncrustables. We hear how many they're eating and Sarah's got a theory about why football players in particular have an appetite for toddler food. China is at it again with their sneaky tourist traps, and it is a hoot. We discuss an exposé on the dangers of cheerleading, why one company is lobbying against their accreditation as a sport, and how cheerleaders are being put in harm's way.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get up to 50% OFF @honeylove by going to https://www.honeylove.com/BRAINCANDY! #honeylovepodBecome the best version of yourself and get 15% off Ned products with code BRAINCANDY at https://helloned.com/BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Spooky Season's last stop in September is aptly named, as the pod detours to Tourist Trap! Caught in the tail wave of 70s slashers that don't quite know the formula just yet, this movie is surprisingly scary with some decent acting to boot. Liz and Host Spencer talk all about this one, and try to modernize it in the end by doing a modern requel. (If this happens we want 50% of the credit.)

Mother's Day (1980), Madman (1981), Pieces (1982), and Evil Dead Trap (1988) When you're talking about horror films with most non-horror fans, they usually are thinking about the slashers which they seem to encapsule all of that genre. But when us fans start to dig into that sub-genre, that's when the questions arise, parameters seemed like they have to set, even though plenty of the films go out of their way to beyond said parameters. As if any were meant to stay between the lines! Then you start to delve into when the sub-genre started, which can then start another round of questions and discussions. To help get those arguments . . . we mean discussions started, in this episode we're going to cover 4 different slasher films, granted, of varying types, but we feel still fits into the category of slasher films. And to help with this, we've invited Aaron Crowell, Managing Editor of HorrorHound Magazine back to join in the conversation. Movies mentioned in this episode: Amsterdamned (1988), Angel Guts: High School Coed (1978), The Bad Seed (1956), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Black Christmas (1974), Blood Song (1982), Candyman (1992), Don't Go in the House (1979), Don't Go to Sleep (1982), Evil Dead Trap (1988), Evil Dead Trap 2 (1992), The Exorcist (1973), Final Exam (1981), Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (1974), Friday the 13th (1980), Frightmare (1974), The Girl in Room 2A (1974), The Girl Next Door (2007), Halloween (1978), Hatchet (2006), House on Sorority Row (1982), The Incubus (1982), It Follows (1914), Killer Party (1986), Lady Frankenstein (1971), The Leopard Man (1943), Living Doll (1990), The Lost (2006), Madman (1981), Maniac (1980), Mother's Day (1980), Mother's Day (2010), My Bloody Valentine (1981), Offspring (2009), Paranormal Activity (2007), Peeping Tom (1960), Pieces (1982), Psycho (1960), Rape Man (2008)The Rift (1990), Satan's Blood (1978), Scream (1996), Slaughter High (1986), The Slayer (1982), Sleepaway Camp (1983), Slugs (1988), Sting of Death (1965), Supersonic Man (1979), Superstition (1982), Terrifier (2016), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Thanksgiving (2023), The Thing (1982), Thirteen Women (1932), Tourist Trap (1979), The Woman (2011), You're Next (2011)

Today, we're joined by returning Special Guest, Shawn Cassity! (not Shaun Cassidy, but if you know him, we'll have him on too) Shawn is having a Keeper's Heart, Phil a Tusker Lager and John is drinking Dewar's 15 year scotch. After we get the usual junk out of the way, we have a brief chat about podcast player apps. Phil has an update on his other podcast activities. John randomly mentions BBC's The Shipping Forecast. And remembers the old NPR show, Music From the Hearts of Space and MST3K. Phil recalls a technique he was taught to memorize Spanish vocabulary and wonders if MST3K ever lampooned the movie Tourist Trap (1979). With Shawn on deck, we have a long-ish chat about our least-favorite Beatles songs. (favourite) Song: “The Cats Will Eat Tonight”

It's no secret — Denver is a tourist destination. But knowing which attractions are worth your time and money can be tricky. If you want to really wow your friends from out of town, which destinations are just tourist traps, and which ones are the real gems, you know — the tourist treats? Last year, host Bree Davies, newsletter editor Peyton Garcia, and producers Paul Karolyi and Olivia Jewell Love built a list of their can't-miss and definitely-pass attractions from downtown D-town to the ski towns of the Rockies. We want to hear from you, too! What are the Denver-area tourist attractions that you really unabashedly love? And which made you feel empty inside? Leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood on the Tourist Trap Hotline, and you might hear it on the show: 720-500-5418 Here are links to all the places we mentioned: Royal Gorge Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave The Denver Zoo Downtown Aquarium Water World Manitou Cliff Dwellings Tiny Town Winter Park Peyton mentioned a 2022 Westword investigation into the Downtown Aquarium — we chatted with reporter Catie Cheshire about her findings. Bree also mentioned our tour of Water World last summer. Paul brought up Raven Payment's Twitter thread on the Manitou Cliff Dwellings Every weekday, you can get even more recommendations for fun stuff to do in our Hey Denver newsletter!
