One of them is a listener who recommended this song! We take a look at Chesney's life that led him to getting a number one hit at only 19 years of age. We also discuss how this tune helped us accept ourselves, and we hope, dear listener, you will also use this song as your own mantra. Hugo van der Ding Locutor, criativo e desenhador acidental. Last week, we attended the announcement for Carowinds' new-for-2027 record-breaking water attraction Rip Roarin' Falls. Like many media events, there is the opportunity to interview people from the park and the manufacturer during the event, but to be cognizant of everyone's time - including other people who might have questions - sometimes you need to keep those interviews brief - not ideal for a podcast. Fortunately, after chatting for a few minutes with David Chesney, who is a water ride engineer for Whitewater, the manufacturer of Rip Roarin' Falls, I knew that we needed a longer conversation - and just a week later, here we are. David takes us through his career in the industry, Whitewater's reimagining of the classic log flume, and everything else - even beyond the three World Records -  that's going to make Rip Roarin' Falls an amazing addition for Carowinds. (For the coaster nerds out there, there's even a little conversation about one of David's first-ever coaster projects - a backyard coaster he build in his late teens!) You can connect with the show by hitting us up on social media @Coaster101: Facebook  |  Twitter  |  Instagram. It's June, which means it's time to get into the 2025 JMU football schedule — and we're doing it with a twist. Inspired by the Ringer Fantasy Football Podcast's schedule draft format, Jack and Bennett each draft games off the Dukes' schedule across five categories: - Home Game You'd Most Want to Attend - Home Game Worth Skipping - Road Game Worth Attending - Must-Watch TV Game - Pumpkin Picking Day (the game you skip altogether to build relationship goodwill before championship season) From the Troy rematch under the lights to a 10 PM kick at San Diego State on the CW, we break down every game worth circling on your calendar — and a few you should hand off entirely. Plus: a deep dive into the state of the Sun Belt Conference, why the league's national profile has slipped since JMU joined, what it would take for the Dukes to crack the College Football Playoff conversation, and whether the Sun Belt can still compete for G5 supremacy against a rising American Athletic Conference. Quick recap This podcast episode featured Keith, Jill, and Terry discussing various news stories and topics. They covered unusual Guinness World Records, including a man breaking records for balloon nose-mouth transfers and another for pulling vehicles with his nipples. Keith shared a detailed story about a professional cornhole player who is a Quadri amputee and shot a passenger during an argument. The trio also discussed a kangaroo escape in Wisconsin and parrot eggs seized in Denmark. Terry presented a top 10 list of funny things to do with duct tape, while the group reflected on how blindness affects personal identity and social relationships. The episode concluded with email readings and final thoughts, including jokes and humorous observations shared by listeners. Summary Terry shared a story about his wife’s ice cream stand and a customer’s lactose-intolerant dog, leading to a humorous discussion about alternative treats. Jill’s mentioned switching to a new Alexa device, which worked better than her previous one, and shared a lighthearted interaction with her granddaughter about the device’s ability to play fart sounds. Keith shared details about a protest rally where someone dressed as a giant penis, which led to a discussion about the “No Kings” movement and its connection to opposition to Donald Trump. News of the Week Terry and Jill then shared stories about Guinness World Records, including an Austrian man who broke a record for snorting balloons through his nose and a Finnish man who pulled a 2,184-pound vehicle using his body piercings. Keith shared details about a news story involving Dayton Weber, a professional cornhole player who, despite having no hands or feet due to a childhood staph infection, allegedly shot and killed a passenger during an argument in Maryland. Keith explained how Weber was able to play cornhole and drive using prosthetics, noting that he prefers not to use them when playing cornhole to better feel the beanbag. The group discussed how Weber might have operated a firearm using a bump stock, though questions remained about the specific mechanics of how he could shoot and drive simultaneously. Terry shared a story about a Pakistani man who broke a Guinness record by performing 66 thumb push-ups with one leg raised. Jill then told a story about a kangaroo named Chesney that escaped from a petting zoo in Wisconsin and was still on the loose. Keith concluded by sharing a story about Danish authorities seizing 261 parrot eggs from a traveler’s luggage, with one egg already hatched. The conversation ended with Terry mentioning an ice cream stand promotion offering Easter eggs with candy or free items. The group discussed a story that Terry shared about the man who broke a record by dining at 28 Michelin-starred restaurants in 24 hours in New York, spending around $976.97 on food and tips. Jill's trivia quiz Jill presented the questions while Keith and Terry played a quiz about the TV show Gomer Pyle, USMC, answering questions about characters, actors, and episodes. The quiz covered topics like Sergeant Carter’s girlfriend, Gomer’s friend Duke, and catchphrases from the show. Terry's Top 10 List Terry presented a top 10 list of creative uses for duct tape, including making wallets, neckties, phone cases, and temporary footwear. The list also featured more unusual ideas like creating pet costumes, temporary flip-flops, and using duct tape to mark personal space. Keith and Jill contributed comments throughout the discussion, with Keith sharing personal experiences about similar projects and Jill raising practical concerns about some of the ideas. Anchor Topic The group discussed how blindness affects personal identity and social relationships. Keith shared his experience of losing friends after becoming blind and having to reinvent himself professionally. Jill described how some people at her church still don’t recognize her despite attending for years, while others have adapted well. The conversation concluded with Terry and Keith discussing various outdoor activities they’ve tried since becoming blind, including scuba diving, horseback riding, and kayaking. Email and Final Thoughts Keith shared three humorous emails about encounters with a homeless man, evolutionary origins, and a motorcycle purchase. Keith shared two audio segments (that means voicemail) during the meeting. The first was a detailed explanation of what would happen if the entire human population were magically transported to Rhode Island simultaneously, concluding that while the Earth would not be significantly affected, the scenario would create massive logistical challenges. The second segment was a shorter story about a thoughtful food delivery person who went above and beyond to ensure a customer’s elderly mother had proper lighting. Keith noted that future segments should be kept shorter to avoid putting Terry to sleep. The final word from our AI companion The meeting was a casual podcast recording session where Keith, Terry, and Jill shared jokes and humorous anecdotes. The participants took turns telling various types of jokes, including word plays, one-liners, and puns, with some personal anecdotes mixed in. At the end of the recording, Keith provided closing remarks, encouraging listeners to share the podcast with others and visit the website for more content. Welcome back! Very warm today with a high near 80° expected. In the news this morning, the latest on the most recent Tiger Woods DUI, airports are now warning people that they shouldn't arrive "too early", Chesney the Kangaroo has been captured & returned to his zoo, a woman in TN gets arrested because of an A.I. facial recognition mistake, and a Fox News reporter gets body slammed live on air! In sports, the Bucks are officially out of the playoffs, the Brew Crew sweep the White Sox, the Badger men's hockey team upsets Michigan State in overtime to advance to the Frozen Four, the men's & women's tournaments are winding down, and Chase Elliott wins at Martinsville yesterday. We talked about what's on TV today/tonight. A heroic senior dog takes on a bear to protect her family, and a bunch of pilots come to the aid of dozens of animals. Elsewhere in sports, the NFL is looking at hiring replacement refs, the Vegas Golden Knights make a head-coaching change, and an umpire had a REALLY bad day behind the plate. An interesting online calculator offers up some facts that will make you feel old. And another online quiz to determine how optimistic you really are. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy in Indiana who stole a semi full of Bud Light and got into a chase with the cops, a Barbie Dream experience that was hardly a "dream", a #FloridaWoman who just won a bunch of money in a lawsuit after she ate ice cream with metal nails in it, and a gender reveal party at a Cracker Barrel that's going viral.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sexting, Bullying, and Social Media-- A Compassionate, Practical Guide for Parents of Teens Today, we welcome back one of our favorite guests, Taylor Chesney, director of the Feeling Good Institute in New York City. Taylor specializes in TEAM-CBT with children and adolescents and brings a rare combination of clinical expertise and real-life wisdom as the mother of four. Parents everywhere are worried about social media, sexting, porn, bullying, and the fear that their kids are doing "who knows what" behind closed doors. In this episode, Taylor offers a refreshing and deeply practical message: the solution isn't better apps, stricter rules, or surveillance—it's connection. Why Blaming Technology Misses the Point Teen brains are still developing. They're impulsive, thrill-seeking, and wired for belonging and validation. Give teens instant access to peers and social media, and mistakes are inevitable. Taylor emphasizes that technology itself isn't good or bad—it amplifies what's already happening in a teen's emotional world. The real question isn't how to eliminate technology, but how parents can guide kids in using it safely and thoughtfully. The Real Protective Factor: Communication Parents often ask, "What app should I install?" or "How do I stop this?" Taylor suggests these questions lead to dead ends. What truly protects teens is a relationship where they feel: understood rather than judged supported rather than interrogated safe coming to parents after a mistake As Taylor explains, for most teens it's not if they'll face a difficult online situation—it's when. The goal is to make sure they come to you when it happens. How to Talk So Teens Will Open Up Using the Five Secrets of Effective Communication, especially the Disarming Technique, parents can shift from policing to coaching. Instead of: "Why were you on your phone?" Try: "Help me understand what was going on for you." This approach reduces secrecy and increases trust. Porn, Sexting, and Shame Discovering porn or sexting can trigger panic and anger in parents—but shaming almost always backfires. Taylor suggests responding with curiosity and empathy: "What was that like for you?" "What do you understand about the difference between porn and real intimacy?" Sexting often begins innocently—seeking connection, validation, or closeness—but once an image is sent, control is lost. Open conversations help teens think ahead without feeling judged or controlled. Parents can also teach teens simple, self-respecting responses like: "I care about you, but I don't need to send that to prove it." Bullying and Online Drama Online bullying mirrors real-life dynamics—but faster, more public, and more permanent. Taylor shares concrete skills teens can use: Pause before responding Don't engage when emotions are high Exit or mute toxic chats Involve an adult early Helpful phrases teens can practice include: "This chat is getting mean—I'm stepping out." "I'm not comfortable with this." "Let's take a break." The Big Takeaway Mistakes—by teens and parents—are inevitable. The real danger isn't errors; it's secrecy. When kids know they can come to their parents without fear of shame or punishment, they make better decisions and recover more quickly when things go wrong. As Taylor puts it: "The kids with the best relationships with their parents make the best decisions." Thanks for listening, and heartfelt thanks to Taylor for this wise, compassionate, and deeply reassuring conversation. — David, Rhonda, and Taylor

In this landmark 100th episode of Mind Yo' Life, recorded inside Morgenstern's Bookstore Podcast Studio, Andrew celebrates the close of Season 8 with a guest who embodies the Midwestern hustle, heart, and humor that define the show—Clayton Anderson, a Bedford, Indiana native turned rising star in country music.   Clayton shares the story of his climb—from playing local events and pouring sweat into bar gigs, to eventually making it to Nashville, where he caught a career-changing break by winning Kenny Chesney's "Next Big Star" competition in Cincinnati.   That victory landed him the opportunity to open for Chesney, and set him on a path toward national recognition.   In this episode, Clayton talks candidly about the music business, brushes with superstardom (including almost being signed by Justin Timberlake and meeting Garth Brooks), and the relentless grind it takes to build a name.   Things get lighthearted too, with a laugh-out-loud discussion about the viral internet theory that Garth Brooks is secretly a serial killer—a wild idea born from comedian Tom Segura's ongoing bit that has taken on a life of its own.   We also explores Clayton's newest venture: opening his own country music bar in Indianapolis, creating a space where live music, local culture, and cold drinks come together.   Packed with laughs, life lessons, and the spirit of someone who's never stopped chasing the next stage, this episode is the perfect way to close out a season—and a reminder that big dreams really do start in small towns.       Clayton Anderson  Clayton Anderson's Country Bar   Podcast Studio Sponsor Podcast Sponsor   Podcast Sponsor JF WALKER INVESTMENTS 812-327-0889

Finding God in Our Pain
Finding Freedom from Narcissistic Abuse, with Annette Chesney

Finding God in Our Pain

SUMMARY: - “Hurting people hurt people—but narcissists mean to. The higher up the spectrum, the more deliberate and sadistic it becomes.” - “A normal person can self-reflect and repair. A narcissist can't or won't—self-reflection feels like death to them.” - “You didn't cause this, and you can't fix it. It's not your fault.” - “As darkness rises, so does the glory of God. What the enemy meant for evil, God can turn for good.” - “If you move slowly and keep physical/emotional boundaries while dating, a narcissist will often disqualify himself.” Annette's 4-category spectrum - Category 1: “Normal” human flaws—can be selfish or insensitive at times, but can self-reflect, repent, repair, and grow. - Category 2: Emotionally immature; hurtful without calculated malice. Constant defensiveness, blame-shifting, meltdowns when confronted. Change is unlikely; aim is reducing chaos and managing wisely if you choose to stay. - Category 3: Calculated and conniving. Love-bombing, data-mining your hopes/fears to weaponize later. Public charm/private cruelty. Dangerous in church/community settings. You won't resolve this. - Category 4: Sociopathic/psychopathic traits. Amplified cruelty and real danger. Divorce triggers the “monster.” Requires safety planning, documentation, and expert help. Dating red flags and protection - Love-bombing: intense pursuit, “soulmate” language, over-the-top gestures, fast-moving timeline. - Boundary testing: pushes past your limits; discomfort rises quickly. - Inconsistencies and subtle cruelty: backhanded comments, smirks at tears or grief, delight in your pain. - How to protect: move slowly, keep physical/emotional boundaries early, listen to the Holy Spirit and your discomfort, look for patterns (not isolated incidents), and let time test character. If you stay (Category 2 dynamics) - Goal: not fixing him, but wisely reducing chaos and preserving your well-being and the household's stability. - Tactics: reframe requests in terms of what benefits him; avoid head-on confrontation; build your life outside the relationship (calling, ministry, education, friendships). - Support: grief the loss of the dream; get equipped; find a small, trusted peer group who truly understands narcissistic abuse. If you're considering leaving (especially 3–4) - Safety first: if there's a risk of harm, have a go-bag for you/kids/pets and get out. - Prepare: document everything; expect financial sabotage; avoid using the term “narcissist” in court unless there's a diagnosis. - Kids: courts may be vulnerable to “parental alienation” claims; consider a High-Conflict Divorce Coach to reduce legal costs and navigate strategy. - Church/community: narcissists often “borrow” your credibility and pre-poison relationships. Find a healthy church culture and rebuild wise support. Biblical considerations for divorce - Abuse, abandonment, adultery are valid biblical grounds. With minors, weigh carefully: safety, modeling for children, and the realities of family court. Healing and identity - Post-abuse, identity is almost always impacted. You can be 10 years out and still hear their voice in your head—self-abuse by proxy. - The path: clean up the past (lies, agreements, unresolved pain), rebuild identity in Christ, then step into power and authority with wisdom and boundaries. - Beauty must rise with pain: intentionally add joy, nature, creativity, and community to counterbalance suffering. Church and parenting insights - Teach kids the Word, discernment, and healthy vs. unhealthy relationship dynamics. Christlike love includes boundaries and walking away when necessary. Programs and resources Annette mentioned - Living Well While Staying: coaching for women who choose to remain in Category 2 marriages, focused on reducing chaos and rebuilding a meaningful life. - Cinderella No More Academy: membership community and tools for recovery and growth. - Cinderella Conversations: 4-session discovery series on identifying narcissistic dynamics, tactics, false guilt, and spiritual warfare. - Upcoming book: Cinderella No More: Becoming Ella (target 2026). She's seeking early readers for feedback. - For severe trauma/PTSD: consider a Christian therapist specializing in trauma; complement with coaches who understand narcissistic abuse. Interview for fit. One thing to remember - You didn't cause it, you can't fix it—and this isn't the end. With God, this can be the beginning of a new, stronger chapter. You get to write the next chapters with Him.   PODCAST INTRO: My guest Annette Chesney is a Christian coach, speaker, and seasoned recovery professional  who equips women healing from narcissistic abuse. Narcissistic dynamics can be hard to spot because they often look like ordinary relationship friction at first. Many people struggle to tell the difference between someone who is simply hurting and occasionally hurtful, and someone who persistently harms others without accountability.  One useful way to think about it is as a spectrum: not everyone with difficult traits is a narcissist, and not every narcissistic person behaves the same way. Understanding this range can help you decide what you're seeing—and what to do next. But before you think that keeps you in the dark….Annette has created a spectrum that consists of 4 categories or types of narcissists including 10 different characteristics. What she shares is very interesting and from my experience very accurate.  Annette's work is done both one-on-one and in groups. She talks primarily from a women's point of view with regard to narcissistic abuse but she did say men are subject to women narcs as well.  Annette talks about common red flags and she says pay attention to patterns over time rather than isolated incidents; that wider view tells the truth. Annette even shares about how she coaches women who choose to stay in a challenging relationship…she teaches  “management” strategies that focus less on changing the other person and more on stabilizing her client's environment, protecting her energy, and minimizing chaos. A few of the examples she gave were learning how to reframe requests so they're seen as mutually beneficial, limiting circular arguments, and building a strong support system outside the relationship.  She even touches on the subject for when separation or divorce becomes necessary and minor children are involved. She alerted us to the fact that trauma symptoms, including anxiety and PTSD‑like responses, are not uncommon adding that qualified mental health support and targeted coaching can help you recover clarity and confidence. Even with the reality of living with the effects of narcissistic abuse…the dismantling of who you are, loss of confidence, identity, goals, dreams etc. , Annette says recovery is possible. Many people find that healing involves unpacking earlier hurts, challenging false beliefs, rebuilding identity, and learning durable skills: boundaries, self‑care, emotional regulation, and discernment.  Getting connected with the right help will make all the difference and get you to what she calls…your Kingdom Zone of Impact where you're living with identity and purpose in Christ.  Her parting words were for the listener to remember two things that are worth holding onto: you didn't cause someone else's narcissistic pattern, and you can't fix it for them. What you can do is prioritize safety, educate yourself/get informed, surround yourself with wise support, and invest in your own future. Whether you're staying, preparing to leave, or rebuilding afterward, the next chapters can be healthier—with Christ those next chapters are filled with restoration and redemption, they can bring clarity, strength identity and purpose… and they're yours to discover with the Lover of Your Soul, the One who never abuses you, never fails you, Jesus. On our latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Coronation Street shown between the 24th and the 28th November (Episodes #11,729 - 11,734). This week, every Swarla fan's worst nightmare comes true as Carla finally walks out on Lisa, her patience with Becky's constant interference pushed beyond breaking point. Lisa's habit of siding with her undead wife certainly isn't a great look - so does she deserve some serious grovelling time in the weeks ahead, or is any of her behaviour even slightly justified? There's more relationship turmoil for Todd and Theo too, as things take a violent turn and a shaken Todd ends up in A&E - still showing no sign of having the strength to walk away from his abusive partner… Also this week, Carl and Ryan clash over who's second in command at the hotel, Chesney catches Fiz sneaking off for some much-needed R&R, and Asha begins to piece her life back together. For this week's Kabin segment, we've tracked down all the places you can see past Corrie cast member in panto this Christmas, and we finish off the show with a spot of feedback. R.E.M. put out a multitude of hits in college, modern, and alternative rock genres in the 80's and 90's.  By the time that Around the Sun, the group's 13th studio album was released, the band was experiencing changes in personnel and struggles with focus.  Drummer Bill Berry retired in 1997 and was replaced by Bill Reiflin.  While Reiflin would be the regular percussionist for the band until their dissolution in 2011, he would not be considered a member of the band like Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass, keyboards), or Michael Stipe (vocals).  From a commercial standpoint the album was a success, going to number 13 on the Billboard 200 in the US, and topping the album chart in the UK.  However, critical reviews were more negative, and the band members would agree over time with Stipe and Mills stating that the album lacked focus.  Peter Buck was more critical, stating that the album shows that the band was bored with the material.  Many consider this the worst R.E.M. studio album the group produced. However, with the benefit of hindsight we think this album is due for a second look.  The songs are more adult-oriented than the bands hits from prior decades, yet maintain the distinctive R.E.M. sound.  There is a cleaner production on this album and clearer lyrics.Rob brings us a great debut folk rock album in this week's podcast.Leaving New YorkThe lead off track was also the lead single from the album.  It reached number 5 on the UK singles chart, making it the eleventh and last top-10 REM single in that country.  However, it was not heavily promoted and failed to crack the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the first US single from an REM studio album not to chart since 1985.  It has a somber tone.WanderlustThis was the fourth and final single from the album, and utilizes a complex time signature of 4/4 time in the verses and 7/4 in the chorus.  The title references the desire to travel, and not remain in one place for very long.  "I got my signals crossed.  It's overwhelming me because I'm all alone and I cant get back - get back with my wanderlust."AftermathThe second single from the album portrays a woman living in a daze after a breakup.  Overwhelmed by ruminations, she overfeeds the cat and underwaters the plants.  It went to number 15 on the US alternative rock chart and number 41 on the UK singles chart.  around the sunThe album contains a title track - a rarity on REM albums.  It begins with a soft acoustic guitar leading into pensive lyrics.  "Hold on world, 'cause you don't know what's coming.  Hold on world, 'cause I'm not jumping off.  Hold on to this boy a little longer, take another trip around the sun." STAFF PICKS:1985 by Bowling for SoupBruce starts the staff picks with a song about a middle-aged woman thinking about how things have changed since her glory days in 1985.  It is a cover song originally done by pop punk band SR-71, but made famous by the Bowling for Soup version.  It went to number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 5 on the Adult Top 40.  Float On by Modest MouseLynch brings us a track that songwriter and band founder Isaac Brock says was consciously written to feel more positive than some of his previous work.  The lyrics are stoic - not getting caught up in the bad things, because good things are around the corner.  "Alright, already, we'll all float on."I Go Back by Kenny ChesneyWayne's flips the script on us by bringing a country song into the mix, but with lyrics that talk about listening to rock songs in the past.  With references to the Steve Miller Band, Billy Joel, Sunday church, Sunday lunch, and the death of a High School friend, Chesney recounts days gone by. COMEDY TRACK:Goofy Goober Rock by SpongeBob SquarePants"The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" was released around this time, and included this parody of a Twisted Sister song.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?NXTGen”NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Teen Troubles? Don't Freak Out! Featuring Dr. Taylor Chesney Today, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Taylor Chesney to our podcast on troubled teens—what actually works! Taylor has been on a number of previous podcasts, and has been a beloved member of the TEAM community for many years! We were lucky to have her here in person as a member of our weekly TEAM CBT training group for several years until she and her husband finally returned home to New York in 2014 where she established her booming clinical practice working with kids and teens. She and her husband, Gregg, have four children of their own, ranging from 11 to 2 ½, so she brings a great deal of practical experience to complement her brilliant technical skills. Taylor will teach us how parents can deal effectively with troubled and impulsive and often smelly and irritating teens. I think you will find her message highly practical and inspiring, and perhaps the opposite of the ways you may have reacted to frustrating teenagers in the past. She says her goal is to help parents feel more confident in dealing with their teens and to teach them how to develop greater teamwork, love and understanding by integrating the Five Secrets of Effective Communication into their daily parenting toolkit. She says that “teen brains are different. They act out impulsively when angry, and can be hard to tolerate at times, or even often.” The goal is to learn to see the world through their eyes, and to become comfortable with being uncomfortable with their behavior. Remember that teens are supposed to be irritable and angry as they grow more and more independent, which is healthy. Compared to an adult brain that is more developed, has better impulse control, and “should be” able to tolerate emotions better. She thinks that parents can often do a great deal more than a shrink, especially if the parents are willing to learn how to listen and connect more effectively with their children. She says, “teen brains are changing constantly. Teens are frustrating. They are angry, disorganized, and want more than anything to spend time with their friends. They often complain, and might say that a party they went to was “lame and it sucked because the parents were there, constantly hanging around. They don't trust us!” Don't argue or contradict them, or try to teach them “good lessons”. Instead use Thought Empathy, Feeling Empathy, and Disarming. Summarize their words and feelings, and find truth in what they are saying. For example, you might say, “That does sound disappointing, having the parents there supervising all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if you feel frustrated and ticked off.” You want them to talk! And they WILL talk if you listen instead of trying to fix or control them. Suppose your teen says, “My teacher sucks. I turned my homework in late, so he deducted 5 points. But I was up late helping my friend on the phone, and I forgot.” You could say, “That sounds super frustrating. I know how much you care about your friends, and would do anything to help them out. It sounds super frustrating that you got marked down on your homework. I know that school is super important to you, too.” In other words, your goal is to provide support and warmth, rather than trying to discipline or scold them. They want to please you, but if you put them down when they are complaining, that will push them away and will cast a shadow on your relationships with them. You'll get frustrated and the tension will escalate, and you may end up shouting at them in exasperation. Then you'll get down on yourself as well, and you may feel like a bad mom or a bad dad. Taylor points out that if we can't model calmness at those moments of tension, then our kids won't learn how to be calm in the midst of conflict, either. They'll just learn to shout and argue—the very behavior that you're modeling. Suppose you ask them to do the dishes, but 30 minutes later they still haven't started. They got distracted. The idea is to use “Gentle Parenting,” showing some patience, warmth and understanding instead of flying off the handle. This does NOT mean giving in, but rather showing kindness when you have to remind them to do their chores. You might say, “I know you've got so much going on, and it can be hard to keep up with everything.” Your kids will become more and more independent as they gradually evolve from grammar school, where they are highly dependent on you, to middle school and then to high school. During this process, you gradually evolve from being highly controlling and protective to being more of an influencer and creating a loving relationship, a friendship, with your child. At the same time that you attend to changes in your “outer dialogue” with your child, it's important to notice your “inner dialogue.” This refers to the way you talk to yourself about our child, and these messages can sometimes be huge barriers to using the Five Secrets of Effective Communication. For example, if you tell yourself that your child is “bad,” this may trigger strong feelings of anger and resentment which will make it vastly more difficult, or almost impossible, to use the Five Secrets. Taylor reminds us that “if you can't or won't learn to see the world through your children's eyes, you are essentially rejecting them and their world, and you will not be able to connect with them. But many parents resist or reject this strategy for a variety of reasons. For example, you may confuse empathy with being weak, or giving with giving in. You may be afraid that if you empathize, your children will walk all over you and run wild. But in point of fact, if you yell and lose your cool, you've lost the battle. You simply cannot force them to go to sleep, or to eat what you want them to eat, or to do what you want them to do. And if you fight your battle at the height of the conflict, when the negative feelings are their most intense, you lower the odds of success dramatically. Give them the message of love, even at the height of the battle. It's not about control, but connection. We demonstrated these beautiful ideas during the podcast with some role-playing and role-reversals. Taylor, your message was crystal clear, simple, powerful, and inspiring. Rhonda and I and all of our fans are indebted to you for visiting today! A big hug and thanks! Taylor, Rhonda and David

YFTer's, it's March but Wells can't stop thinking about summer. Can you blame him? WE WANT THE HEAT. The butts sticking to car seats, steering wheels hotter than Mercury, sweaty sweat kinda heat. But alas, it's March. Anyway, this week Wells takes issue with some seriously wild things flooding his social media - sassafras for eternal youth anyone? (no thanks), a South Carolina inmate chooses a literal firing squad as his final way to depart (WTF?), and TikTok tells us that a mother and daughter claim to have the same baby daddy (and are ok with that??). Meanwhile, in Traitors land, Danielle won, Gabby played everyone, and the reunion was kinda pointless. Wells is officially retiring from reality competition shows.
