Since early September, President Trump has ordered the U.S. military to conduct multiple lethal strikes on boats in the Caribbean Sea suspected of drug trafficking, resulting in at least 21 deaths. These unprecedented military actions raise critical questions about the identity of those targeted, the Administration's legal justification, and the scope of presidential power to designate “terrorists” and authorize lethal force. What checks exist from Congress, courts, or the executive branch to limit such authority? On this episode of the Just Security Podcast, cross-hosted with the Reiss Center on Law and Security, host Tess Bridgeman and co-host Rachel Goldbrenner are joined by experts Rebecca Ingber and Brian Finucane to analyze the facts, the law, and the broader implications of this military campaign in the Caribbean. They examine an important new chapter in the use of force against drug cartels and explores how far presidential powers extend in such contexts.Show Notes: This is a joint podcast of Just Security and NYU Law School's Reiss Center on Law and Security.Executive branch reporting on the vessel strikes, on Tren de Aragua, and related resources:48-Hour Report pursuant to the War Powers Resolution (September 4, 2025) (Note: For a living resource containing this and all other publicly available reports submitted pursuant to the War Powers Resolution since its enactment in 1973, see NYU Law's Reiss Center on Law and Security's War Powers Resolution Reporting Project)Notice to Congress Under 50 U.S.C. §1543a (Section 1230 of the FY 2024 National Defense Authorization Act) (undated, made public October 2, 2025)National Intelligence Council, Venezuela: Examining Regime Ties to Tren de Aragua (April 7, 2025)Listeners may also be interested in Just Security‘s Collection: U.S. Lethal Strikes on Suspected Drug Traffickers (updated, Oct. 3, 2025), including:Mary B. This special September Sunday episode is a deep breath for weary and wondering parents. Ginny welcomes author and podcaster Maeve Jemison to dismantle the most persistent homeschool myths—socialization, schedules, screens, “I'm not patient enough,” “we both work,” single parenting homeschool, and more—and to show why home can be the ultimate individualized education plan. Maeve shares how she pulled her daughter mid-year, moved from all-online to books on the couch, and discovered what so many families eventually see: kids thrive when we protect curiosity, right-size academics, build life skills, and make room for joy. It's practical, eye-opening, and deeply affirming—exactly the reset you need heading into a new homeschool week. You'll leave with concrete, calming takeaways: flexible rhythms that work for dual-income and single-parent homes, why functional literacy doesn't require full-time school hours, and how embracing many ways to be smart unlocks confidence for every learner. This conversation is part of our September Sunday series designed to help you start each week steady and supported. Listen, share with a friend who's on the fence, and keep the encouragement coming. • Get Maeve's book: Home Is Where the Truth Is: Why You Can and Should Homeschool Your Child • Listen to Maeve's podcast: Homeschooling for Catholic Parents — Listen on Amazon Music Learn more about your ad choices. As we face our Doom via climate crisis or other unknowns, how can we plan for the uncertainty ahead? What are ways forward that might help us to protect what is most vulnerable, preserve what we can't afford to lose, and provide seeds for rebirth on the other side of Doom? Brian McLaren proposes multiplicity and flexibility, because there is so much that we do not know and cannot predict. “Rather than tightly grasping at single solutions to help us regain a feeling of control, we need to loosen up our imagination, so we can imagine multiple ways through the turbulence, multiple routes to multiple safe landings.”
Today is National Radio Day, and Mike Johnson, Beau Morgan, and Ali Mac celebrate by talking about how the radio industry has impacted their lives, and telling some of their favorite radio stories.
God Never Said There Are Many Ways to Heaven confronts the increasingly popular idea of universalism—the belief that all roads lead to God. Pastor Vicki Harrison compassionately challenges this with Scripture, grounding her message in John 14:6, where Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This isn't just a comforting verse—it's an exclusive claim of divine truth. The sermon reminds us that bad theology leads to bad decision-making and distorted views of God, often fueled by cultural narratives rather than Biblical truth. While acknowledging the emotional and intellectual tension this topic can raise, Pastor Vicki holds fast to the truth that Jesus is not one way—He is the way. Hell is addressed not as a scare tactic, but as a sobering reality: a place devoid of God's presence. Rather than arguing about who's in or out, we're invited to focus on our responsibility—to reach the world for Jesus Christ by sharing the Gospel (Matthew 28:19). If you're wrestling with exclusivity, doubt, or injustice, you're not alone. The message closes by calling us to trust in God's wisdom (Isaiah 55:9) and live out our belief that Jesus is the only way to salvation. Are your actions demonstrating that belief?

LIVE SHOW: August 18th in Brooklyn. Tickets here. Traditional economics says the market is guided by the forces of supply and demand. Customers decide what they want to buy, and private enterprise responds to that need. So what makes government think that it's smarter than capitalism? Why offer tax breaks to Hollywood or incentives to build silicon chip factories in Arizona? Why those industries and not others? And when does the free market fail and need government to step in? Today, we discuss what happens when the government really wants to get its hands dirty and shape the direction of the economy, even decide which companies should prosper and which ones should fail, through industrial policy. The series is hosted by Robert Smith and produced by Eric Mennel. Rome’s Western Empire may have fallen 1,600 years ago, but its cultural impact has a radioactive half-life that would make xenon jealous. Over a billion people speak Latin (or at least a Latin-derived language). Governments around the world self-consciously copy Roman buildings and create governments that copy the imperial senate. Every self-aggrandizing leader has compared himself to Caesar, including those with a strong claim (Charlemagne and Napoleon) and those with a weaker one (Idi Amin and Muammer Gaddafi). But what if the Roman Empire never truly fell? This is the perspective of today’s guest, Aldo Cazzullo, author of “The Neverending Empire: The Infinite Impact of Ancient Rome. Rome’s influence is not just a relic of history—it’s the foundation of the modern West and nowhere is that more evident than in the United States. While many political empires throughout history have presented themselves as the true heirs of Rome, Cazzullo contends that it’s the US, that most resembles the Roman Empire. It’s an angle with which to view America’s story/where it’s heading and most importantly, what we can learn to ensure that we can look forward to another 3000 years.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Which side is your good side? You know, the side of your face you point toward the camera when someone takes your picture. We all have a good side. And I bet I know which one yours is. https://newsfeed.time.com/2012/04/24/which-side-is-your-good-side-here-comes-the-science/ You are exposed to a lot of music every day. Sometimes it is music you seek out and want to listen to as well as music that plays in the background – in stores, in elevators, in a doctor's office. All that music affects your brain in interesting ways. Here to explain how is Sara Leila Sherman. She is a musician and educator, who studied and pioneered innovation in music as a tool for learning and personal growth. She is coauthor of the book Resonant Minds: The Transformative Power of Music, One Note at a Time (https://amzn.to/4jDM6Aq). Many prescription drugs do amazing things to help people. Still, there are frequent stories of drugs that go wrong. They either don't work or they turn out to cause harm or even death. Isn't the FDA supposed to make sure that doesn't happen? How do bad drugs get approved? Is the process broken? Here to offer some great insight into this is Jerry Avorn, MD. Who is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He created a leading research center at Harvard to study medication use, outcomes, costs, and policies and has written hundreds of papers that have appeared in medical literature as well as opinion pieces in The New York Times and The Washington Post. Mauricio knows our industry from multiple angles, so I was really happy when Kalisan chose him as one of the guests in their curated month. In this episode, he shares with us where he found help in growing his business, how he made his pivots and more. We'll hear about his rapid growth as a twister, which included doing some jobs for celebrities in Miami. He also shares a fun story about how balloons can soften up almost anyone… and then a sad story that became part of the reason he expanded into decor. After a big life change and receiving some coaching and mentoring, Mauricio hit the ground running when fully incorporating decor. So much so that he's become a “sub-distributor”, which we'll hear all about. Then I ask him for some advice on how decorators might dip their toes into twisting and he shares some practical tips for doing just that. This was such a fun interview with a bunch of good little tips! Over in the UGlu Hotline, we got a tip for water weight replacements! In a new book, author John Green traces how the disease has impacted culture, geography, and even fashion over the centuries.Tuberculosis (TB) has had an incredibly large impact on human history. One staggering statistic? It's been estimated that by the start of the 1800s, the disease had killed one in seven people who had ever lived. Because of this, tuberculosis affected human culture, geography, and fashion—and even killed off some of literature and media's most famous heroines. While TB incidence has gone down tremendously in the United States, it remains a massive issue in low-resource nations. About 1.25 million people die of TB each year, making it still the deadliest infectious disease in the world.Author John Green explores humankind's relationship with TB in the new book Everything is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection. Green speaks with Host Flora Lichtman about how TB's path reflects our society and culture. He joins us from Indianapolis, Indiana.Transcript for this segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Subscribe to this podcast. Bob Motta On The MANY Ways Karen Read And Her Team Are Destroying Their Credibility & Case Could Karen Read's own words be her biggest legal misstep yet? The courtroom drama surrounding the alleged killing of Boston police officer John O'Keefe takes another sharp, bizarre turn as Defense Attorney Bob Motta unpacks the latest from the pre-trial chaos on Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski. From dramatic courtroom walk-ins that feel ripped out of a soap opera, to prosecutors chasing down data like it's hidden in the final boss level of a video game, this episode covers it all. We dive into the surprising hearing involving Aiden Carney, explore how Karen Read's new phone might become a fresh headache, and examine the defense's baffling approval of a documentary that may contain more self-incriminating commentary than a late-night drunk text. And let's not forget the origin story of the conspiracy theory that's somehow become central to the case—it involves a gravelly-voiced mystery man and a narrative twist worthy of a Netflix pitch meeting. Is this case about uncovering a botched investigation, or just digging a deeper hole with every new revelation? #KarenReadCase #JohnOKeefe #TrueCrimePodcast #LegalDrama #DefenseDiaries #CourtroomChaos #HiddenKillersPodcast Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
