It's Friday, June 6th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims killed 9 Christians On June 1st and 2nd, Fulani Muslim herdsmen killed at least nine Christians in Plateau State, Nigeria, following the slaughter of 27 others days before, reports Morning Star News. The attacks took place in Bokkos County in predominantly Christian communities. Emmanuel Auta, a local resident, said, “Christians [are] being butchered.” Another resident, Lilian Madaki, said, “Among some of the Christian victims that I know is a 14-year-old Christian teenager who was shot and wounded and is currently being treated at a hospital.” And, in a text to Christian Daily International, Yakubu Kefas wrote,  “The attackers, who we believe are Fulani terrorists, are carrying out indiscriminate shootings, killings, and large-scale arson, resulting in widespread terror, Christian casualties, and destruction of property.” Please pray for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ in Plateau State, Nigeria. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” Trump bans new visas for foreign nationals from 12 countries On June 4, President Donald Trump issued a full suspension on new visas for foreign nationals from a dozen countries applying for entry to the United States and a partial suspension on nationals from another seven, reports TheEpochTimes.com. The proclamation is set to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on June 9. A full suspension will go into effect for nationals from Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. A partial suspension will affect nationals from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. This executive action comes after the Secretary of State and assistant to the president on Homeland Security filed a report on April 9 identifying countries with such deficient vetting and screening information that a full or partial suspension of entry for their nationals was warranted. ‘60 Minutes' anchor Scott Pelley ripped for "angry, unhinged" speech criticizing Trump Outraged critics blasted longtime CBS “60 Minutes” anchor Scott Pelley as “angry” and “unhinged” after he delivered a fear-baced tirade against President Donald Trump during a commencement speech in North Carolina, reports the New York Post. The CBS newscaster warned Wake Forest University's graduating class on May 19 that “insidious fear” has infiltrated schools, businesses, and homes across the nation — leaving America in a state of “peril.” Listen. PELLEY:  “In this moment, our sacred rule of law is under attack. Journalism is under attack. Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack, and insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes.” Scott Jennings, the conservative commentator on CNN, called Pelley out for such a ridiculous statement. JENNINGS: “On the free speech issue, I don't know what America Scott Pelley is living in. We have more speech now than ever. There is no problem with free speech in America. What we do have a problem with are people who don't speak truthfully, who are interested more in narratives than truth, and who are using what used to be journalism for activism. We do have a problem with that.” Jennings asserted that 60 Minutes on CBS is a platform that is more interested in a leftist narrative than the truth. JENNINGS: “If you've watched 60 Minutes for five minutes over the last several years, you would know it's not fair. This is one of the shows, this is one of the outlets that conservatives would point to most often to say: ‘This is the state of American journalism. It's only here to try to hurt Republicans, hurt conservatives, hurt Donald Trump.'” Painting of Jesus returned to prominent location at naval academy U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has announced that he is restoring an historic painting of Jesus Christ to its place of prominence at the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, after it had been taken down by Biden-era officials, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Known as “Christ on the water,” the painting depicts Jesus walking on the water in stormy seas toward merchant seamen adrift in a lifeboat, presumably after being torpedoed.  DUFFY: “We are moving Jesus out of the basement. To all the great midshipmen at the Merchant Marine Academy, you let me know how important this painting was to all of you. Now, we all know it was taken out of a place of prominence and put it down in the basement. “I worked with the Academy, and because this is such a historic painting, I'm announcing that through that work with the Academy, this painting is going to go from the basement back to its place of prominence. It'll be a moment to celebrate.” It was painted by Lieutenant Hunter Wood in 1944 as a tribute to all merchant seamen who had been torpedoed during World War II. Actor Kevin Sorbo champions U.S. Christian heritage in new movie In the new docudrama called The American Miracle, historian Paul Kengor, one of 14 historians, captures how pivotal the Declaration of Independence and the subsequent American Revolution was for the world. KENGOR: “America in 1776: This is a watershed event in history. If you were to pick something over the last 450 years, four and a half centuries or so, that truly transformed humanity and the full scope of history, it was 1776.” The American Miracle movie will hit 1,000 screens across America on three days only – Monday, June 9th, Tuesday, June 10th, and Wednesday, June 11th. The actor who plays Benjamin Franklin – Barry Stevens -- is spot on in terms of appearance and disposition alike. FRANKLIN: “We have been assured, sir, in the sacred writings, that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” Kevin Sorbo, who portrays the younger Thomas Jefferson, is an enthusiastic advocate that Americans know their own history. SORBO: “I think there's not enough history being taught in America anymore. I think people forget about what our Founding Fathers did for this country. Documentaries like this, I think, can help heal a nation, as corny as that sounds. I really do think it's important to learn history.” And Pastor Darnell Harper of New Covenant Temple, who screened The American Miracle before its June 9th national release, was amazed to witness God's divine intervention in America. HARPER: “I went to history class. I did not learn that God was in the middle of everything that was going on with the birth of our nation, the Constitution, and it just showed the handiwork of God and how God was establishing the United States of America.” Acts 17:26 says, “From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole Earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.” Go to https://americanmiraclemovie.com/, watch the trailer, click on the Tickets tab, and type in your zipcode to purchase tickets at a movie theater near you to see it on June 9, 10 or 11. We're grateful to God for Troy in Coeurdalene, Idaho, Rene in Chicago, Illinois, and Jeremy in Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom – each of whom gave $100. Those 12 Worldview listeners gave a total of $4,575. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please.  (Drum roll sound effect) $10,927 (People clapping sound effect)  We missed our goal of 20 donors by 8 donors. That means by midnight tonight, Friday, June 6th, we still need to raise $19,948. If you, and 19 other listeners, would invest $100 per month for 12 months to help underwrite the cost of the 6-member Worldview news team, we will have funded one-fourth of our annual budget.  Help us reach this $30,875 goal. However, if that's not affordable, then do something.  Even if you pledge just $10/month for 12 months, that's a whopping $120!   No gift is too small or too large as we continue to provide a news source that is accurate and Biblically based. Before David's startled gaze the newcomer placed his right hand to his left shoulder and removed the left arm. He then proceeded to dismember himself until only a torso, head and one arm remained. The Artificial Man by Clare Winger Harris. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.A new debut on the podcast today: the first woman to publish science fiction stories under her own name in the pulp magazines. While Francis Stevens—born Gertrude Barrows Bennett—was a trailblazer often credited as the first female science fiction writer, she published under the ambiguous name “G. M. Barrows,” using initials that concealed her gender.Clare Winger Harris didn't hide hers. When her first short story, The Runaway World, appeared in the July 1926 issue of Weird Tales, it was credited openly to Mrs. F. C. Harris.Born in Freeport, Illinois in 1891, Clare came from a distinguished background. Her mother, Mary Stover Winger, was the daughter of D. C. Stover, the town's wealthiest man, a renowned inventor and industrialist. Her father, Frank S. Winger, was an electrical contractor and a science fiction writer himself, having published The Wizard of the Island; or, The Vindication of Prof. Waldinger in 1917.Between 1926 and 1933, Harris wrote a dozen science fiction short stories and one novel. In the late 1930s, she moved to Pasadena, California, where she lived modestly and sometimes worked as a switchboard operator to make ends meet.Remarkably, just a year before her death in 1968, she inherited a quarter of her grandfather's estate—valued at over two million dollars. Though he had passed away in 1908, the estate had been tied up in court battles for nearly sixty years. We will find today's story in the very first issue of Science Wonder Quarterly in the fall of 1929, on page 78, The Artificial Man by Clare Winger Harris…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, When a skeptical professor steps into the mind of a former student's fiancée, he discovers a surreal landscape shaped by vanity, obsession, and alarming emptiness. Home sales are starting to look weak Last week we saw the release of existing home sales in the month of January and the decline was far bigger than expected. The number of units sold on an annual basis was 4.08 million, which was a decline 4.9% compared to the prior month. Analysts were expecting a smaller decline of 2.6%. While inventory remains tight at a 3.5-month supply, it is improving. Month over month inventory increased 3.5% and when compared to last January, we saw an increase of 17%. For now, it appears that housing prices are stable with the median price of a home sold in January at $396,900, an increase of 4.8% over last January. The number of cash buyers slipped from 32% one year ago to now only 29%. What is more disturbing is the numbers on first time homebuyers. Over history, first time homebuyers have generally made up around 40% of home sales, but January data shows that has slipped to only 28%. I don't see a crash in the housing market coming, but I do believe people buying a house thinking they will make 10 to 20% on their investment over the next year or so is a mistake as I'm pretty confident those days are gone. If you're going to buy a home, buy it as a place to live and raise your family, do not try to make a quick investment return on the short term.   Some home sellers are giving up As a whole, the US home selling market has had some cracks, which we have talked about in the past. The rising interest rates have kept buyers on the sidelines and people selling their homes still think they're worth more than what they can get in today's market. Also, sellers have been spoiled over the past few years thinking you put your house on the market and you should be able to sell it in less than a month. Over a longer period of time, which looks out further than just the last few years, it used to maybe take 3 to 6 months to sell a home. Home sellers really became discouraged in December as delistings soared 64% in the month compared to last year after not finding an interested buyer to purchase the home. At 73,000 delistings, this was the highest level since 2015. We could see that change if interest rates come back down, but at this point in time there's no indications that that will happen in a major way. I'm still looking for a low growth environment for the price of real estate in the coming years.   Another comparison showing AI is overpriced Many people have used the comparison of the tech boom and bust when looking at the high prices for a lot of these AI stocks, which I believe has a lot of relevance. But if you go back 100 years, there's another comparison with Radio Corp. of America, which was a booming technology back then. If your company put radio in the name somewhere, you got to ride along on the upward trend. Sound familiar? RCA stock rose 200 times its value during the 1920s, but then by 1932 it fell 98%. What is even more amazing is in 1986 General Electric acquired RCA for about 72% higher than the price peak back in 1929. It has never been a wise investment strategy to overpay for any investment, which seems to mostly happens in technology. Over the years this hype cycle has happened with cannabis, electric vehicles, and 3-D printers just to name a few. No one knows where the top will be for AI, but one thing I know for certain is many people will lose far more than they could even imagine, which unfortunately will destroy their retirement portfolios.   Berkshire Hathaway historically high cash balance It is no secret that Warren Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway, is sitting on over $300 billion in cash, which is invested mostly in T-bills. As a percent of assets, it is now just over 25%, which has never been seen before. The excess cash is caused by two things, first reducing ownership of Apple and some other stocks. Last year alone Berkshire sold 605 million shares or about 70% of its holdings in the stock. It now has a market value of only $75 billion. The second reason for all the cash is likely because of his philosophy to invest when others are fearful and sell when they are greedy. We are definitely in the greedy stage, which we have been talking about at our firm for probably over a year now. No one knows when this will change, but it will. With the expensive nature of many companies and the markets, Warren Buffett likely cannot find anything on sale that he believes is worth buying. I don't see a major crash coming in the near future, but I also don't see any big gains coming either. I do continue to believe we will likely see a correction that leads to a short-term pullback of 10 to 20%. I hope you're prepared for a few months of volatility, as I believe it is coming.   What's so Special about your “Full Retirement Age”? The Social Security Administration references your “full retirement age” quite often, so it is important to understand why that matters, and why it doesn't. The main reasons this age is important is because at that point you are no longer subject to the earnings limit, and your benefit amount at that age is used to calculate spousal benefits. If you begin collecting Social Security before your full retirement age, you are subject to an earnings limit of $23,400.  For every $2 of wage or self-employment income you have above that limit, $1 of your Social Security benefit will be withheld from you.  Other income sources do not count and this rule no longer applies after reaching you full retirement age, meaning you can work and earn as much as you want.  If you do have Social Security withheld due to the earnings limit, you will receive a credit for that when you reach your full retirement age. As a spouse if you had a limited earnings history, you may collect a spousal benefit from the record of your higher earning spouse.  The spousal benefit is ½ of the higher earning spouse's full retirement age benefit amount.  The age that the higher earning spouse actually collects does not change the spousal benefit.  In order to receive the full spousal benefit, the lower earning spouse needs to collect at their own full retirement age.  Waiting beyond that does not increase the spousal benefit, but collecting before full retirement age will reduce the spousal benefit. For those reasons full retirement age matters, but there are plenty of situations where it doesn't. If you stop working before your full retirement age, then the earnings limit is irrelevant, and if you and your spouse both have an earnings history, then spousal benefits are irrelevant. Many retirees have the belief that something special happens to their benefit amount at their full retirement age, but the truth is, your Social Security window is from age 62 to 70.  Every month you wait to start, your benefit amount increases slightly.  There is no additional increase upon reaching a specific calendar year, birthday, or even your full retirement age.  For some it may be best to collect at their full retirement age, but for the majority of retirees it is more beneficial to collect at an age other than their full retirement age based on their individual income, asset, and tax situation.   Companies Discussed: Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX), Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM), Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI) & Eli Lilly and Company (LLY)

Conch: Queen of the Florida Keys

Gravy

In “Conch: Queen of the Florida Keys,” Gravy producer Adwoa Gyimah-Brempong takes listeners to the Keys, where queen conch is plastered across menus: conch fritters, conch salad, even conch chowder. The shells are a visual icon in Key West, even gracing its (semi-joking) flag as a sovereign nation: The Conch Republic. Which is fascinating… because conch hasn't been fished on the island in fifty years. So where is it coming from, where is it going, and why is the culture so enduring? Conch is beloved both culturally and culinarily across the Caribbean, and the cuisine made its way to the Keys with an influx of Bahamians in the 1800s. It became a symbol of the slow way of life on the island, which chef Martin Liz points out is 40 miles closer to Cuba than it is to the nearest Walmart. It's high in protein, easy to catch, versatile to prepare, and provides everything from building materials to precious pearls once harvested. But in the Florida Keys, conch was overfished to the point of near collapse in the 1970s and ‘80s. The reasons that it hasn't rebounded are being studied by scientists in Florida and elsewhere, because their numbers are falling throughout the waters where it makes its home. Due to a combination of overfishing, warming waters, and changing ocean pH, it's getting harder for conch to reach sexual maturity. And as density-dependent reproducers who grow and travel at a snail's pace, once populations are depleted they are very slow to return. That's a problem not just for kitchens, but for the ocean itself. As a bioengineer species that keeps seagrass beds vibrant and thriving, an ecosystem orbits around conch that spans from the tiniest algae all the way up to nurse sharks. It's crucial for carbon sequestration, and also employs thousands of fishers around the Caribbean. Different countries have approached this in a variety of ways: many have closed seasons. The Bahamas has completely closed exports, while Jamaica recently inaugurated the first conch fishery with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. Florida Fish and Wildlife researchers are experimenting with transporting immature conch further offshore, where they can bulk up the gastropod dating pool. And Florida Atlantic University's Queen Conch Lab, led by professor Megan Davis, is partnering with research institutions and fishers to protect conch for generations to come. In this episode, Gyimah-Brempong talks to Davis and her colleagues, as well as Gabriel Delgado, a researcher with Florida Fish and Wildlife, and Kristian Moree and Lachelle Russell, aquaculture technicians at Freeport mobile conch lab. She also interviews chefs who work with conch, including Martin Liz in Key West and Terry Eden Pratt in Grand Bahama. Michael Moxey, a Grand Bahama fisherman, tells of conch's accessibility and an evolving way of life. United around a love and need for these large-eyed snails, island nations are both strengthening their economies and increasing their protection from ever-stronger hurricanes. Which, with any luck, will keep conch on the sea floor – and in the stew pot – for generations to come. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rob Boyer Faced Petition to Adopt Strong Mayor Form of Government | Ep. 94

In Illinois, Freeport City Manager Rob Boyer recently faced down a citizen's petition to move away from the council-manager form of government and revert back to the strong mayor form. Reeling from mismanagement and economic decline, Freeport abandoned the strong mayor form of government about a decade ago. Since that time, Rob and his two predecessors have done great work to turn the community around. In this episode, we discuss many of his and their accomplishments and how the residents and taxpayers are better off today. But, a recent effort that appears to be tinged with political motivations sought to undo this progress and return Freeport back to the "old way" of doing business and rewarding political allies. Never underestimate the machinations that may take place behind the scenes when someone sees an avenue to create a full-time six figure job for themselves... This has been no problem for pigskin partiers! The cold weather creates the perfect conditions for cozying up and finishing projects!  In the huddle, there has been lots of discussion about what folks can reasonably finish before the end of the party. There was also an interesting discussion about how many WIPs folks can manage at one time. Not leaving Instagram, at least not yet, but I'm checking it out.   Thank you to KnittyELF40, Erika, who kindly gifted me her new bundle of patterns- Seasonal Blooms on Ravelry.   Life in Focus   My Word of the Year for 2025: Welcome Verb: to greet hospitably and with courtesy or cordiality Verb: to accept with pleasure the occurrence or presence of Adjective: giving pleasure: received with gladness or delight especially in response to a need (A welcome addition)   Why I need this word: This year will be a year filled with first after Mom's passing on January 1st. I need to welcome in the new year even when it feels hard, and welcome in whatever emotions come up as I make my way through 2025. I've spent much time in the last few years focused on my mom (and I'm so glad I could do that), but now I'll have free time to welcome in new things. I want to be thoughtful about my time, but also open to welcoming in new things that will bring me joy. My mother made everyone feel welcome and at home whether physically in her home or just with her as a person. I strive to make people feel welcome in my presence too and to use that to continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship and connection. I hope that this will help me keep alive the many relationships that Mom was able to maintain. I am an introvert by nature and love the prospect of staying hour with hours of myself to plot out- but I know that I am happier and more fulfilled when I stay connected with those I love, so this year when I'm tempted to say "no thanks" I will try, when possible, to instead say "we'll come" a variation on welcome.   On a Happy Note About 20 people showed up for one of Garret's hockey games that was nearby! Beautiful show of support and a fun night out. I found the jewelry Mom gave me for Christmas! Surprise surprise, it was in a bag of knitting stuff that was brought home and put down cellar. While I missed auditions as we prepped for the funeral, I got a dancing role in Kiss Me Kate with Meg. The show is the last week of April/first weekend in May. Millie came for a 2 night sleepover during MLK weekend. She made us pancakes! Organizing my mom's things. Eme came over and we look through craft supplies for a new project they want to do. I found a few things for me (mostly scissors and crochet hooks) and I purged some. I put away the Christmas tree and put my new plant stand in place! I love it. Dan was going to order me a plant subscription, but instead we'll go together to a local place a few times a year and try to learn a little more about houseplants. Dinner with my cousins at local Mexican restaurant. I received a beautiful package of watercolor supplies in the mail from Rachel! Thank you so much. I can't wait to dive in. I received many cards and notes from several of you. Thank you!!! Millie, Ryan and I ran into listener, Donna, at Russell's. So lovely to see you! Last weekend Riley came for a sleepover Saturday night. On Sunday, we picked up Aila and checked out one of her favorite antique stores and had a lot of fun browsing. Dan invited my Dad, Tom and Oisin for dinner at The Snug. Megg, Hattie and I went to see Peter Pan in Boston.   Quote of the Week “Departure of a year welcomes so many new memories” ― Munia Khan   ------ Thank you for tuning in!   Contact Information: Check out the Down Cellar Studio Patreon!
