April is Autism Awareness month and as an effort to move the dial on stigmas around people, places and experiences involving people on the spectrum I want to invite you to meet a few amazing people who are doing their part to change the stigmas and providing safe spaces to teach and learn. “Finding a Place You Never Have to Say Sorry” is the wish of many parents of special needs children. Dina Kimmel knew that feeling all too well, and as the parent of a son diagnosed with autism she knew that she needed to find a solution. That solution started first in her home with her husband and her remodeling the their home. Eventually it became the “home away from home” which became a respite for “her kiddos”, caregivers who wanted to “Play with a Purpose” and find a safe place where EVERYONE could be included in the fun times – We Rock the Spectrum Gyms was born! We Rock the Spectrum Gyms are now worldwide with over 100 locations in 8 countries for “People of Determination” who just want to have some fun. During this year of the pandemic, Dina and her team of heroes lead the way in their communities to bring a level of stability to lives. https://www.werockthespectrumkidsgym.com/rock/ Dina created a 501(c)(3) organization – My Brother Rocks the Spectrum Foundation to support children and families. https://www.werockthespectrumkidsgym.com/nonprofit/ I would enjoy hearing from you if you would like to connect you can find me, Uncle Dave on most social media as David Chametzky (facebook page Peace, Love and Bring a Bat) or just drop an email: peacelovebringabat@gmail.com
March 31, 2021 | Episode 32 Shawn Francis & Brian Altounian, just Two Dads, have a heart to heart with Dina Kimmel, We Rock The Spectrum Franchise Owner. Dina Kimmel is the CEO & Founder of We Rock the Spectrum (WRTS), a kids gym franchise that caters to children with autism and special needs. An autism mom from Tarzana, CA, she is a passionate advocate for children and has dedicated her life to developing and growing resources for the special needs population. In 2010, she opened the first WRTS after her son, Gabriel, was diagnosed with autism and she struggled to find a place where both he and her neurotypical daughter, Sophia, could play together. We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym in Tarzana, CA saw instant success with the special needs community and there are now more than 80 locations worldwide! On the wall of her gym, Dina put the motto, "Finally a place where you never have to say 'I'm sorry.'" This message continues to resonate with parents of special needs children all over the world. Her aim to provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment where children of all abilities could play and grow together and her mission of full inclusion has now become a global movement. Dina Kimmel studied Business at CSUN, but it is her mother's intuition combined with her entrepreneurial spirit that led to the creation of We Rock The Spectrum Kid's Gym. After her second child Gabriel was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dina began to research ways to facilitate her son's development. Dina found that with early intervention many children were making significant improvements. This led her to create a sensory gym in her own home. Gabriel thrived and at the same time her older daughter Sophia enjoyed playing on the equipment. This provided the family joy and relief at the same time. "One of the biggest challenges when you have a child with any disability is that often all of your focus lands on them and the other siblings feel neglected or deprived". The fact that both of her children were being entertained at the same time was a fantastic outcome. This was the beginning of We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym, "Finally a place where you never have to say I'm sorry".
