Once sworn enemies in TV appearances and on social media, Fred Guttenberg and Joe Walsh got together privately and realized there is much that unites them. They are now on a tour of college campuses hoping to share their success in bridge-building with others divided by hate.
The division in this nation is everywhere. It's not just between Democrats and Republicans. Divisions are deep inside formerly unified fronts, and these divisions seem to eat at the fabric of our society. Our guests this week are trying to change that. Joe Walsh is a former Republican Congressman. Fred Guttenberg's daughter Jaime was killed in the Parkland shooting. They have very different views on specific issues, but through their work as Two Dads Defending Democracy, they are working to protect us all. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Joe Walsh, a former U.S. Representative from Illinois, and Fred Guttenberg, a businessman-turned-activist following his daughter's murder in the 2018 Parkland school shooting, went from arguing with each other on social media and television to engaging in meaningful dialogue. The “Two Dads” forged a friendship through patience and civil discourse, demonstrating how people from opposite ends of the political spectrum can find common ground on contentious issues such as gun safety.

Ted and Carlos adopted Daniel when he was eight through the foster care system. His parental rights had already been terminated and he'd been through multiple failed placements before arriving in their home. On this special episode, we get to hear from Daniel, himself, about his experiences, as well as chat with Ted and Carlos about the joys and challenges of adopting an older child who has been in the system longer and how they surmounted difficulties through love, patience and perseverance. They talk about the "honeymoon period", behavioral challenges and helping Daniel get off lots of medication. They discuss how they bonded as a family during the pandemic, and "family fun day", a family tradition they developed when they were getting to know each other that they still try to continue today. They also touch on homophobia and how they deal with it, as a family with two dads. Ted is an old friend of mine from my college days of studying in London. I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to interview him and his beautiful family.

Working our way steadily through Volume I, we discuss: A Case of Successful Treatment by Hypnotism (1892-93); the Preface and Footnotes to Charcot's Tuesday Lectures (1892-94); Sketches for the "Preliminary Communication of 1893" (1940-41 [1892]); and Some Points for a Comparative Study of Organic and Hysterical Motor Paralyses (1893 [1888-1893]). Along the way, we tackle a fascinating case study about hypnotism, feeding, and breastfeeding; will versus “counter-will"; tics, cursing nuns, imps of perversity, and The Little Engine That Could; why certain concepts catch on and others don't; the brilliant Josef Breuer and his complicated relationship to Freud; early models and definitions of trauma; and a good Freudian reason for why you should always read the footnotes.Have you noticed that Freud is back? The year was 1987 and comedies about multiple straight men raising children together and acting domestic was all the rage! That year saw the movie Three Men and a Baby, the start of Full House…but wait, there was one more lesser known show to hit the airwaves: My Two Dads! Starring Paul Reiser and Greg Evigan as the two dads, and Staci Keanan as the daughter who enters their lives by surprise at the age of 12. Her mother passed away and left her to the care of these two men in her will, because one of them is the biological father—but nobody knows which one. Oh, and the judge who presided over allowing this to actually happen also becomes their landlord. Brynn, Aaron and Barry marvel at what might actually be the most extreme New York loft they've ever seen on TV. In this deeply personal and revealing episode, I share my unique experiences with fatherhood, childhood trauma, and the healing journey that followed. I open up about having two dads, dynamics of my relations with each of them. I also candidly discuss two significant mistakes I made as a father and the lessons I learned from them. Perhaps the most profound part of this episode are the two metaphysical experiences I had after my biological dad's death that led to complete healing from childhood trauma and a restored relationship with him. Join me for this raw and powerful look into my life, as I share insights that may resonate with your own journey and inspire you to seek healing and forgiveness.
