The Tenth and final commandment in the Ten Commandments, Do Not Covet. Today we see where coveting starts, where it ends, and how this one rule can break them all.
The killing of covetousness is enough of a relationship killing, soul-crushing, and blinding phenomenon that God gives us a clear command to steer clear and evaluate our hearts in our relationships with others.__________ If you're new let us know & visit https://www.covenantdoylestown.org to learn more about us and how you can get connected. One of the reasons we are warned to “beware of covetousness”, is because it starts out below the surface of our lives. It begins many times unrecognized in our thoughts and desires and if left unchecked, suddenly we find ourselves caught in its trap. Are we setting our affection on temporal things? Are we cultivating desires for things that are outside the bounds of what God has for us? Listen as Nate and Gabe give examples from Scripture of those whose lives were devastated by the root of covetousness.Whether it's advertisements coming from billboards, social media, or the inbox, there is so much pressure from our culture telling us that we need more stuff. The hidden message is that our identity and fulfillment come through our possessions and our social status. It's time for Christians to draw a line in the sand and resist the pressures of our day! We need to drop anchor on the fact that our identity and contentment come from a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. If we have Christ, we truly have enough.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? As believers, we need to be careful that we don't derive our identity and value from our paycheck or our possessions - if we do, we will always be covetous for more! The substantive part of our life is not made up of the things we possess. But rather, our identity is found in the Person of Jesus Christ! The more we realize this the more we will experience life with rest and contentment.Whether it's advertisements coming from billboards, social media, or the inbox, there is so much pressure from our culture telling us that we need more stuff. As you dig deeper into this command, you will discover that it is God's love for us that causes Him to warn us of covetousness. Covetousness causes us to seek after temporal things that only bring emptiness and death. A rich man was once asked, “How much money is enough?” He answered, “Just a little bit more.” This answer illustrates the ugly root of covetousness. Covetousness is wanting more than what God has allotted to me. In this study of the 10 Commandments, we will look at the intention and the heart of each of the commandments. The commandments were not given to save us, but to point to our need for a Savior. Jesus kept each commandment fully and then died in our place as commandment-breakers. God’s commands aren’t fences […] The post Do Not Covet – Exodus 20:17 appeared first on Seneca Baptist.

In this riveting episode, John Van Gelderen and Gabe uncover some of Satan's tactics in bringing temptation into our lives. To counter these attacks, they share a life changing truth God has given to overcome! You will be encouraged as you see God's provision in Christ as “THE way of escape.”Temptation comes in different forms – there is temptation caused by the physical realm and temptation caused by the spiritual realm. God has made a way for us to escape – and it comes as we understand our position in Christ! What does it mean that Christ is in us? And what does it mean that we are in Christ? This message is perhaps one of the most practical you will ever hear on how to “appropriate” our position in Christ!Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? Listen as Nate and Gabe share from the example of Achan how lust plays out in our lives. In life we will be faced with things we can't always control, but by the grace of God, we don't have to turn our heart toward those things. If we let Him, God can train us to look away from those things to Him! This is the way of victory!Listen and be encouraged that victory in the area of lust doesn't come from our effort, but rather from dependence on the Lord. God's way to overcome lust is by way of replacement - when we pursue intimacy with the Lord and fill our mind with His Word it replaces us and pushes everything else out!Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? Galatians 6:7 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” One key to overcoming lust in our lives is to realize that every thought we think is a seed planted, and it will bear fruit. Moral freedom is not a status to be obtained, it is a Person to be depended upon. And that Person's name is Jesus! As we pursue intimacy with Jesus and are filled more and more with His Word, we will see Him increase our lives, and thus be set free from the bondage of lust!Listen and be encouraged that victory in the area of lust doesn't come from our effort, but rather from dependence on the Lord. I did however recorded the episodes in the TV studio but I am not able to get the recordings until this Friday, February 4th. So please stay tuned and be patient with me. Thank you all again for being my faithful listeners.
This is the final sermon in the Ten Commandments series, "Do Not Covet." This commandment gets to the heart of God's law. The desires of man drives his actions. While the law can only govern and regulate his actions, Jesus Christ changes his inner desires and transforms the inner man by his Word and Spirit.
Pastor Paul Ernst and Pastor Mary Eileen Spence conclude the summer sermon series, “God Is Still Speaking: The Ten Commandments for Today,” in which we explored the significance of these covenants to the Israelites and the power they still hold for us today as we live out our lives as God intended. This week, we explore the commandment “Do Not Covet” and the many ways coveting or desiring what others have compromises our contentment. We are also blessed with amazing music, a children’s message, prayer and scripture.

Exodus 20:17 Life Group Discussion Questions: Word Doc PDF
There is only one commandment that prohibits a thought, and it is this: "Do Not Covet." Why does the Bible, which is preoccupied with behavior, legislate a thought? Because to covet, to want what belongs to someone else, is the root of the preceding four commandments and often leads to evil. Before someone murders, steals, lies, or commits adultery, the desire to take what is rightly someone else's usually comes first.
“The last of the 10 Commandments is "Do Not Covet". In a culture built on an economy of coveting it leaves us bitter because we didn't get what we hoped or unsatisfied after receiving it. Jesus is the one who satisfies!”
Desiring what we lack rather than delighting in what we have is one of our greatest problems as a human beings. Coveting comes naturally but contentment must be learned. Let's allow The Scripture to teach us how to be content.

The Ten: "Do Not Covet" by Caleb Cole by Project Church
Most of the commandments we can fool others over, we can pretend an action. But Pastor Nathan Willowby covers the one commandment we really can't fool ourselves over: "Do Not Covet." This commandment reaches down into our thoughts. Showing us we need to train our thoughts. Desires are not always bad; it depends upon what we desire.
