Evangelist Timothy Fleming continues his series on the transformation of the Apostle Paul. This episode looks at how Apostle Paul grows in his life through Christ.
Essentials for a Church Growing in Christ-likeness1) Pastors who proclaim, feed on, and follow sound doctrine – vv6-7a. 2) Pastors and church members who train themselves for godliness – vv7b-10.Training for Godliness (Christ-likeness):· Valuable Promise - · God-empowered Effort - · Motivating Assurance – -Why is it critical that pastors themselves have a close relationship with Christ through His Word?-Do growing relationships just happen or do they require intentional effort? Show we expect the same in our relationship with Christ?-Have you exercised discipline to train yourself in other areas of life? If so, what did that entail? What would it look like to employ similar discipline in your relationship with Christ?-If someone were to observe you for a week, what would they conclude is valuable to you? Why is growing closer to Christ more valuable than worldly pursuits?-What about God's character gives you assurance in the promises of God's Word? For further study: Lk 18:29-30; Jn 10:10; Rom 13:12-14; 1 Cor 9:25-27; 2 Cor 11:27; Phil 2:12-13; Col 1:29; 2 Tim 3:10-16; Heb 12:1-2.

In Psalm 1, we get the picture of the person who is righteous and walking with God being like a healthy tree, planted in the ground by a stream, with roots going deep down in the rich soil towards the water, weathering whatever storms come, and bearing sweet fruit in season. This is how God made us and wants us to live. In our lives, we grow closer to Him by growing deeper. So in this series, we're looking at three ways - otherwise known as “spiritual disciplines” - that we can grow deeper and closer in our relationship with God by being rooted in Him.In this message, we wrap up our series by looking at the spiritual discipline of rest. As young adults, we're desperate for it in our culture, so where do we find it, why do we need it, and how can we live a restful life? Those are the questions we look to the Bible to answer as we aim to live with healthy rhythms of work and rest.We hope you're encouraged by this podcast! Where there is life, there is growth. Growing in Jesus is God's will for us. When we come to know and follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit works to mold us and transform us into His image. So, how do we cooperate with his work in us? In this message, we learn what transformational growth requires of us.The steps are the same whether you are getting started or continuing to follow Jesus. Let's get going!
Scripture: 2 Peter 2:10-22
In Psalm 1, we get the picture of the person who is righteous and walking with God being like a healthy tree, planted in the ground by a stream, with roots going deep down in the rich soil towards the water, weathering whatever storms come, and bearing sweet fruit in season. This is how God made us and wants us to live. In our lives, we grow closer to Him by growing deeper. So in this series, we're looking at three ways - otherwise known as “spiritual disciplines” - that we can grow deeper and closer in our relationship with God by being rooted in Him. In this first message, we take a look at what the Bible says about prayer. It's such a huge topic, but in this one parable Jesus taught in Luke 11, He very clearly answers for us the three main questions about prayer: 1) what is it (really), 2) why should we do it, and 3) how should we do it. In answering these questions, we can start to build this practice into our lives not for the sake of earning God's favor, but just because we want to spend time with Him and see Him move in our lives. Hey family, last week was so important, as we talked about finding our identity in Christ through Ephesians chapter 1. We will pick up with that message, but this Sunday I'm happy to tell you that Pastor John Fils-Aime will be speaking the word of God. We meet at 10 a.m. Sundays, 360 Schermerhorn St., and kids' church meets for children ages 5-12 will meet at 10 also. --Edwin Announcements: Join us for a 13-week study on what it means to be a Christian. You can purchase the GROWING IN CHRIST booklet after service this Sunday, and we meet by Zoom on Mondays at 6:30.
Do we recognize the things that subtly creep in and distract us from being able to love God with a whole heart? Fear and worry will eat up our focus and attention and crowd out our love for the Lord. Competition with the world - trying to love the Lord and love the world at the same time will cause our love for God to grow cold. And even just busyness (even if it's good things) so often distracts us from Him! We need to guard against allowing other things to pull our focus away from wholehearted devotion to the Lord. This is the foundational bedrock of the Christian life: God loves us. When we receive that love, it changes us. Our desire is that this new study on the command of Christ to “Love the Lord” will open your eyes to see the love of God for you. Receiving God's love is the one thing that will ignite in us a desire to love Him back and then enable us to become channels of His love to others.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? Have you ever realized that from the beginning to the end of the Bible, the primary way that loving God is defined is by keeping His commandments? This makes all the sense in the world when we see that the word keep means “to treasure” and “to guard.” What are you treasuring in your heart? Because “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21).This is the foundational bedrock of the Christian life: God loves us. When we receive that love, it changes us. What would you say if a husband professed deep love for his wife, then followed up his declaration with, “But my life is just so busy, I only have 5 minutes a day I can spend with her”? You would call that man a liar. The greatest revealer of what we love is how we spend our time. If we were to be honest, most of us would admit that we view God's laws and commandments as a rigid checklist of do's and don'ts. But have you ever considered that all the commands have their foundation in love? It is life changing when we realize that all the commands are actually an expression of love - God's love to us and our love to God and others. This is the foundational bedrock of the Christian life: God loves us. What feeling does the word command evoke in you? Do you view commands as something hard, frustrating, and grievous? For many of us, God's commands can make us feel frustrated and burdened because we view them as something we must do in our own effort. But did you know obedience to God's commands is supposed to be a joy and even a liberty? In today's guest episode with Caleb Reed, your view of God Himself will be challenged as you see commands from a totally different perspective. God's commands don't flow from a desire to make us just behave and “stay in line.” His commands flow from a heart of love. God's commandments are an invitation from our loving heavenly Father to go deeper into a relationship with Him. If we find that obedience is a burden and a chore, it doesn't mean that the command is wrong. It simply means that our view of God is off and we don't understand His heart of love in giving the command. When we see and understand His love for us, obedience will become a joy.Caleb Reed is an evangelist who travels full time with his family preaching in churches, camps, and Christian schools. He and his wife Emma have 3 children. They have a burden specifically for the local church. They desire to come alongside local pastors and aid them in equipping the saints. Have you ever considered that Jesus was born in Bethlehem (thus fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy) because Joseph and Mary were “rendering to Caesar the things that were Caesar's”? They literally traveled to Bethlehem to pay taxes! Albeit under the rule of the corrupt Roman government, God's divine orchestration was taking place. This episode will encourage you as Nate and Gabe share Biblical examples of “rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's.” In this often overlooked command to “Render to Caesar”, Nate and Gabe will unearth the context and background of this command as well as the rich application that this holds for our lives here and now. First and foremost, we are to “render to God things that are God's” - namely we are to surrender to God our lives which bear His image! And secondly we are to “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's.” It is beautiful to realize that when we honor the God-ordained authority structure, we are actually honoring God Himself and showcasing His love to those in authority! What is the difference between an owner and a steward? If you own something, it means you have absolute control over it. However if you are a steward it means that a thing is owned by somebody else and you just manage it in a way that honors their heart and wishes. In this powerful episode, Nate and Gabe bring up key aspects of how we view money and possessions. Where is your focus when it comes to material things? In this often overlooked command to “Render to Caesar”, Nate and Gabe will unearth the context and background of this command as well as the rich application that this holds for our lives here and now. The “double command” in this command is eye-opening! Jesus didn't just command us to “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's”; He also commanded us to “render to God the things that are God's.” Truly everything we have is from the Lord and is to be used for the Lord. If we gain a vision for “rendering to God the things that are God's”, it will have a profound impact on every aspect of our lives. The atmosphere would have been tense. People would have been waiting with baited breath to hear Jesus' answer. “Should we pay the tax to Caesar?”, was both a politically and religiously charged question. And it was asked intentionally to trap Jesus. Would He openly come out against Rome? Would He openly speak against His people, the Jews? Listen as Gabe and Nate share how Jesus cut right to their heart - in profound wisdom, He addressed the question in a way that was irrefutable by either side. How do we help people without enabling them? How do we help without hurting? These are tricky questions and often we find ourselves being either cynical to people or gullible. While there is not a “formula” to this, there is a key: we need to stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit. God's heart is for the poor, and He wants us to have an ear that is turned toward the needs of people. But at the same time, we need to have an ear that is turned heavenward and listening to the Him and how He wants to meet the need.Do you desire to have God's heart for the needy in your life? Do you want to see people the way that He sees them? God is no respecter of persons - His heart is the same for all people! We need to recognize that the ground is level at the foot of the cross - the reality is that we are all poor and needy! When we see God's heart of love for us, we are then able to be a channel of that love and kindness to others.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ?
