What does covetousness mean? Today, we launch into the ninth commandment, which deals with carnal concupiscence. This commandment addresses the tension between the “flesh” and the “spirit.” Fr. Mike emphasizes that purity of heart and temperance are crucial to overcoming lust of the flesh. The more we obey God, the more our hearts see others as God sees them. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2514-2519. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. The tests we keep failing are what's keeping us stagnant and not progressing in faith
John has stated not to love the world, but now he tells us to not love the things in the world. The first one that will be discussed is what is the lust of the flesh and is that something I struggle with?
This message explores the constant battle between the desires of the flesh and the will of the spirit, using Jesus' temptation in the wilderness as a guide. It highlights how pursuing God's will over fleeting cravings leads to true peace and fulfillment. — To connect, learn more or donate, visit gravetopchurch.com Follow us on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok by searching @gravetopchurch --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gravetopchurch/support
In this episode I provide my review of Jared Moore's book, The Lust of The Flesh. It is a breath of fresh air and much needed resource for believers as we continue to fight for the purity of the body of Christ.
There are many things in our world that try to keep us from Jesus, but maybe the most powerful thing that distracts us from Jesus is SELF.
This episode is about living without God in a dying world. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loretta23/support

What do I do if I feel bad about having ruined my body? How do I believe my body is good even though I feel responsible for having messed it up? Isn't God mad at me because He gave me a good body and then I messed it up by the way I ate (or didn't eat) and exercised (or didn't exercise)? Today, Heather explores the reality that our bodies are made differently and some bodies are more susceptible to issues and disease than others. But, the real answer for this struggle is a theological answer. What do we believe about sin and the consequences of sin? What do we believe about repentance and forgiveness? What do we believe about making bad choices and how God handles that? The questions under the question is: Has my sin ruined my life? Have my choices changed my life in such a way that I'm no longer able to live the life God planned for me? Can God still use me even though I feel like I've made bad decisions? Heather explains how often the sins that we believe we are guilty of around our bodies are not what we think they are. And, how the real sins of pride, envy, lust of the flesh, greed, idolatry are what was under and driving those decisions to eat or exercise in a certain way. So-called food "sins" are often not about the food at all. Heather also digs into the concept of guilt, worldly remorse, and true repentance. Taking inspiration from Tim Keller's sermon, The Problem With Guilt , Heather explains how these concepts can help us get out of that place where we feel stuck feeling guilty for the ways we've inappropriately cared for (or neglected) our bodies. This topic is nuanced and tricky, but hopefully the truth of scripture about how God is still good and still has a good plan for your life, no matter how you feel you've "messed things up," will encourage you. The Lust Of The Flesh - John McCall by Somerville St Church of Christ
One of the reasons we are warned to “beware of covetousness”, is because it starts out below the surface of our lives. It begins many times unrecognized in our thoughts and desires and if left unchecked, suddenly we find ourselves caught in its trap. Are we setting our affection on temporal things? Are we cultivating desires for things that are outside the bounds of what God has for us? Listen as Nate and Gabe give examples from Scripture of those whose lives were devastated by the root of covetousness.Whether it's advertisements coming from billboards, social media, or the inbox, there is so much pressure from our culture telling us that we need more stuff. The hidden message is that our identity and fulfillment come through our possessions and our social status. It's time for Christians to draw a line in the sand and resist the pressures of our day! We need to drop anchor on the fact that our identity and contentment come from a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. If we have Christ, we truly have enough.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? As believers, we need to be careful that we don't derive our identity and value from our paycheck or our possessions - if we do, we will always be covetous for more! The substantive part of our life is not made up of the things we possess. But rather, our identity is found in the Person of Jesus Christ! The more we realize this the more we will experience life with rest and contentment.Whether it's advertisements coming from billboards, social media, or the inbox, there is so much pressure from our culture telling us that we need more stuff. As you dig deeper into this command, you will discover that it is God's love for us that causes Him to warn us of covetousness. We continue our sermon series Blessed Assurance, where we explore the idea of finding assurance of our salvation through scripture. Today, we look at 1 John 2, where John instructs us not to love the world. The three categories of worldly lusts are the flesh, the eyes, and the pride of life. These are our appetites, affections, and accomplishments—the lusts that operate in open rebellion against God's love and His commands. True salvation is when God's glory takes on the ultimate weight of your heart, and you quit putting the weight on the lusts of the flesh, eyes, and the pride of life. The way we lessen these is to embrace the love of God fully. What worldly love do you need to stop pursuing? What's holding you back from embracing God's love today? As always, we'd love to connect with you, take the time to answer any questions you have, and pray with you. Take the next step in your faith journey by visiting burnthickory.com/next.

Jared Moore is the Pastor of Homesteads Baptist in Crossville, TN. In his recent book, “Lust of the Flesh,” Jared examines current movements within the American evangelical church related to sexuality. Jared takes to task various proponents of same-sex attraction within the church. He also looks to church history to give weight to this important matter. My endorsement of Jared's book: “In this accessible volume, Dr. Moore has done a tremendous work for the church today. The issue of sinful desires and lust is a fierce battleground for Christians, and many are harmed by bad teaching on these matters. Dr. Moore's contribution to the church is certain to build her up to think clearly on such crucial topics. Christians and pastors will benefit greatly from the clear biblical and theological thinking found within."Support the show!! - https://www.patreon.com/chasedavisJared on X - https://twitter.com/jaredhmooreBuy “Lust of the Flesh” - https://amzn.to/3QTwM5rBuy “Lust of the Flesh” - https://freegracepress.com/collections/new-releases/products/the-lust-of-the-fleshSupport the showSign up for the Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/chasedavisFollow Full Proof Theology on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/fullprooftheology/Follow Full Proof Theology on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/fullprooftheology/

In the world today, what feels good has become a god. And the immediate access to global, national, and personal news doesn’t do anyone’s soul any favors. So, what’s stealing God’s peace from your life, and how can you get it back?
From 1 John 2:15-16, every temptation since the fall of man will fall into one of these 3 categories. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, or the boastful pride of life. Lust is any longing or strong desire from that which is forbidden. The lust of the flesh is always going to involve our basic needs and us trying to get them met apart from God's way.
David most certainly did not live the most Godly of lives; read any amount of 1-2 Samuel, and you will see that is the case. However, David can rightly be called "a man after God's heart" because of his posture of repentance and turning away from his own sin and back toward God. How might David's repentance invite you into repentance for yourself?

This verse is from 1 John 2: 15-17. The battle for the human heart that began at the fall of man, is accelerating, we can sense it, almost smell it in the air we breath. The world that we grew up in, while not perfect, at least gave those of us fortunate enough to have been born in the United States, the freedom to breath and to choose good or evil for the most part. The air of freedom is being snuffed out, and many do not seem to notice. This battle begins and ends at the level of the human heart, your heart and my heart. What does it take to turn this situation around? In answering this question tow fundamental truths should be kept in mind: first, that man, men and women, are called to live in truth and love; and second, that everyone finds fulfillment through the sincere gift of self. “Philogyny is fondness, love, or admiration towards women.[1][2] Its antonym is misogyny. Philogyny comes from philo- (loving) and Greek gynē (woman). The parallel Greek-based terms with respect to men (males) are philandry for "fondness towards men" and misandry for "hatred of men". Parallel terms for humanity generally are philanthropy and misanthropy.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

Paul lists the works of the flesh in v19-21 to reveal the true nature of the flesh, motivating us to refuse to yield to the flesh and express it in our lives, but rather be led by the Spirit. We note the 4 categories of these works: (1) sexual sins, (2) religious sins, (3) social sins, in the area of personal relationships, and (4) intemperance. We study the meanings of the Greek words used by Paul to describe the following works of the flesh: heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries. Paul indicates that this is by no means a complete list, and other manifestations of the flesh are described elsewhere in the Bible. It is helpful for us to understand the nature of the flesh, so that we recognise the voice the flesh when it speaks to us, or tries to express itself through us. When the flesh rises us we should turn to Christ and declare His Word, trusting in Him to give us the victory over the flesh. Paul adds a warning that: "those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God" (v21). We show that those who do not inherit the Kingdom are the same as those who are not in Christ, and who are not sons of God. This does not mean that believers who sin will necessarily lose their salvation. Rather it speaks of those who embrace and practise these sins as a lifestyle, expressing their true inner nature (of fallen flesh) in their life. Although born-again believers will on occasion yield to the flesh and sin, when they do so they are acting against their true inner nature of love in their reborn spirit, and are convicted by the Holy Spirit. As a result they do not embrace these sins of the flesh as their lifestyle, but rather they struggle against them. Thus a true believer cannot be happy or at peace while living in sin.
