Should official govt data be hosted by overseas cloud providers?

A local cloud computing specialist is warning about the dangers of our critical data being held on cloud services owned by international companies. Data held onshore by an overseas owned cloud provider is not, and can never be, under the exclusive control of Aotearoa, according a legal opinion obtained by the cloud computing company Catalyst Cloud. A new digital strategy for the courts has just been released by the Office of the Chief Justice. Local cloud computing firm Catalyst Cloud is so concerned about prospect of our judiciary adopting a US-based cloud computing provider, that it sought an opinion from a Kings Council which concluded the only way to avoid jurisdictional risk is by holding government information exclusively in New Zealand. Police already use a US-based cloud computing provider, holding evidential material, including about sex crimes. Kathryn discusses with Doug Dixon, CE of local provider Catalyst Cloud.

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I speak with Retired Marine Biologist, avid fisherman, and lover of wine, Doug Dixon. Doug has a PhD in Biology and we spend much of our conversation talking about how he has helped power plants maintain safe environments for wildlife. We also talk about his love for "Big, Bold, Red Wines" and we talk about a few of our favorite vineyards in the finger lakes region. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Doug as much as I did. Enjoy a glass of your favorite wine and enjoy the show! The Wine, Wineries, and Food Hosmer Winery Hosmer Winery is a fully functioning estate winery, everything from planting and growing the grapes, to picking, pressing and bottling is done on site. As a farm, we cultivate 70 acres of grapes with over 14 varieties and growing. Our belief in wine making and grape growing are parallel and continuing and we strive to maintain preservation of the land and the fruit form vine to table. Our passion for what we do is exemplified through the creation of our memorable wines. McGregor Vineyard The McGregor family invites you to enjoy a casual, seated tasting of estate wines produced from our half-century-old vineyards. Our winery is hidden on a hillside just one mile above the eastern shore of Keuka Lake. The Elf in the Oak Casual atmosphere with an outstanding view from the deck! This hidden gem is quite small, with only a few tables inside, and a few on the deck. Get a table on the deck for an outstanding view. The lunch selections were standard fare with a foodie twist...very tasty! There's an ice cream stand outside as well for those with a sweet tooth and if you have any room left after the big lunch. Grab your shades and kick off your shoes because the Jammerz are in Los Angeles with comedian/botanist and self-aware 311 fan, Doug Dixon! Get ready to luxuriate in the soothing sounds of LA traffic, local street vendors, and Megan and Wendi straight up talking over the boys. What do you want! It’s LA, baby! These idiots are so chill, they’re not wearing headphones OR proper underwear. But has the chillness of LA affected hardcore New Yorker, Stephen Penta?? Yes! But only to make him more irritable, which is all fun and games until he reveals himself to be a former gun owner (insert theme music from ‘Psycho’)!!! Luckily, the trio gets enough of a contact high from Doug’s weed sandals to mellow out about the gun stuff and find out exactly how Doug turned a stoner thought into a reality that was able to not only feed his fellow comics but also get him high AND successful enough to afford a pool! That’s right, we got a self-taught farmer so get out your notebooks to jot down helpful tips like: how to safely operate a rototiller using just your genitalia, the best way to kill a savvy NYC rat AND an easy DIY pepper spray recipe! We also get some sweet insider info about the history of an Oklahoma football team, an uncomfortable amount of 311 trivia PLUS Megan and Wendi gush about the health benefits of eating dirt! If even 3% of the conspiracy blogs are correct, we may be rapidly hurdling towards an apocalyptic zombie future so get this episode into your ears and GET GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD. Or at least learn how to add ladybugs to your life for a little extra whimsy. Follow Doug Dixon! In our third episode we begin the show discussing Steve Martin’s autobiography “Born Standing Up” with comedian Dan Van Kirk, looking into the incredible career of the legendary comedian. We also delve into the art and challenges of stand up comedy, the improvised stand up show “Set List”, audience dynamics, and how fame and popularity change everything. Next, we get a visit from a “Helicopter Mom” in New Canaan Conn., Julia Ballentine Peter, who tells us how a children’s book by James Patterson of ‘Alex Cross’ fame, “Treasure Hunters”, got her daughter Nel, 8, to fall in love with reading. It turns out that’s something he’s passionate about, and he has a great website called readkiddoread.com that promotes reading for kids and does lots of great work. Next, we talk to comedian Doug Dixon about a fascinating non-fiction book, “How We Got To Now: Six innovations That Made the Modern World” - by Steven Johnson. Based on the television series of the same name, hosted by Steven Johnson of the same person, seen on BBC2 and PBS. It’s an amazing multi-media project about innovation and how things change our world in surprising ways. Read it or watch it, you can choose! (You’re probably gonna watch it, aren’t you?) This project reminds me of another multi-media project I love, The Big History Project, a collaboration between Bill Gates and David Christian that’s about, well, everything. I highly recommend checking it out. It’s fun, easy, and informative. We wrap it up with a timely selection from Raj Desai, “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk”: by Ben Fountain. Currently being made into a movie by Ang Lee, this provocative novel leads us into a great discussion about late bloomers, heroes, Raj’s hometown of Arlington Tx., Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, a young Alan Arkin, Malcolm Gladwell, The Dallas Cowboys, and so much more. Enjoy!
