We often talk about living on a blue planet, but when we think we're talking about the ocean we're generally only discussing what's in it: fish, whales, pollution and ships. But that is to miss the biggest story on Earth, because it's the water itself that sets the scene for everything else. This lecture will outline how the ocean engine works – its internal anatomy, how the components move, and how this engine has directly influenced our history and culture. This lecture was recorded by Professor Helen Czerski on the 30th of October 2025 at Bernards Inn Hall, LondonDr Helen Czerski is a physicist and oceanographer with a passion for science, sport, books, creativity, hot chocolate and investigating the interesting things in life. She is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London and her research focus is the physics of breaking waves and bubbles at the ocean surface. These bubbles change underwater sound and light, help transfer gases from ocean to atmosphere (helping the ocean breathe) and also eject ocean material into the air. She has spent months working on research ships in the Antarctic, the Pacific, the North Atlantic and the Arctic, and is an experienced field scientist. Helen has been a regular science presenter on the BBC for 15 years, covering the physics of the natural world in BBC2 landmark documentaries (including ‘Orbit', ‘Operation iceberg' and ‘Supersenses'), and the physics of everyday life in a range of BBC4 documentaries (including ‘From ice to fire: The incredible science of temperature', ‘Sound waves: The symphony of physics', and ‘Colour: The spectrum of science', along with many others). She currently co-hosts BBC Radio 4's flagship climate and environment programme Rare Earth. Helen's first book Storm in a Teacup won the Italian Asimov Prize and the Louis J. Battan Author prize from the American Meteorological Society. Blue Machine won the Wainwright Prize for Conservation Writing. She was awarded the Institute of Physics Gold Medal in 2018 for her work on physics communication, and an Honorary Fellowship of the British Science Association in 2020. She has been a Trustee of Royal Museums Greenwich since 2018, and was one of the 2020 Royal Institution Christmas Lecturers, giving her Lecture on the topic of the ocean. The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/liquid-engineGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. As the nights get darker and we all get a bit spookier... we speak to Charlie Cooper about his fab BBC ghost-hunting show Nightwatch. It's a deeply creepy 6-part docu-series featuring Charlie and his sister Daisy May Cooper as they travel to the UK's most terrifying haunted locations in search of ghosts... STUNNING. We discuss sibling dynamics, who scared the shit out of who, the ghost hunts that have shit us up and whether or not we fancy cartoon animals. We hear about true paranormal experiences (mimics anyone?), whether or not we all believe in the afterlife and the chilling 70s story of a haunted bothy and a possessed deck chair. Daisy sadly couldn't join us, but sends us in a voice note of a VERY CREEPY Isle of Wight legend 'the Sand Down Clown'. We end with a touch of telepathy... does it... actually... work? Enjoy this meandering ghosty chit chat and go see Nightwatch on BBC iPlayer or Sundays 9.30pm on BBC2. It's fabulous. xoxo Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We have a Lazarus double bill this week as both showrunner Harlan Coben and Star Bill Nighy drop by for separate (but thematically connected) chats about the new Prime Video thriller (which is embargoed, so we'll be reviewing it on Pilot+). Plus we go abseiling with Lauren Lyle in The Ridge on BBC2, head back to posh Victorian England with The Forsytes on Channel 5, and get a little ASMR from Julia Roberts in Leonard And Hungry Paul on BBC2. Elsewhere, Kay enquires as to just what it takes to make us all stop watching a show, and James issues a public apology. (Episode 359)

On 19 September 1975, the nightmare story of a maniac who should never have been running a hotel, his tyrannical wife, their hapless Spanish waiter and a stream of eccentric guests made its debut on BBC2. Fifty years later Fawlty Towers still captures middle Britain at its most hilariously uptight – and Basil Fawlty has never been bettered as an Englishman on the verge of nervous breakdown. Comedy writer Jason Hazeley joins Andrew Harrison to explore the majesty of “Fatty Towels”… ponder whether John Cleese has actually turned into Basil… and ask why the show's legend lasted so long. So many great singing artists lost to the world of late! Almost a month ago now, the great Welsh tenor Stuart Burrows (07 February 1933 - 29 June 2025) left this mortal coil at the age of 92. Burrows was an artist of extraordinary technique, elegance, and sincerity and it has been an honor and a delight to put together this episode which celebrates his career. Because he was a favorite partner of so many exceptional divas, I decided to focus this episode on Burrows singing duets with some of the most important divas of his era. Included in the episode are Beverly Sills, Gundula Janowitz, Joan Sutherland, Renata Scotto, Leontyne Price, Nelly Miricioiu, Gwendolyn Killebrew, Margaret Price, and Reri Grist, singing Mozart, Massenet, Offenbach, Gounod, Berlioz, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and even some Puccini. “The boys” are represented by José van Dam and Countermelody favorite Donald Gramm. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Burrows was a popular television star in the UK, starring in the eponymous BBC2 series, Stuart Burrows Sings. The episode also features two snippets from that show, one a duet with the beautiful lyric mezzo Diana Montague (whose husband tenor David Rendall died earlier this week). The episode begins with a tribute to the beloved Welsh pop contralto Iris Williams, who died on July 11 at the age of 79. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

Send us a textOn the latest Too Hot For TV, Dylan is joined by Jim Allenby to talk about two very different bits of Doctor Who media. First up it's the BBC2 documentary 'Resistance is Useless' and then it's the 7th Doctor and Ace in the Big Finish play 'The Grey Man of the Mountain'. And as always they answer the burning questions:Why is Football better than Genesis of the Daleks? Why does the TARDIS have lips? What book has a lot to answer for?
Music Not Diving is supported by AC55ID... head over to www.ac55id.com to check out the fastest growing electronic music marketplace, a central hub for music discovery, streaming and purchasing! And for artists and labels... use the code Scuba6 for six months free use of the platform!!--Watch the full video version of this episode over at youtube.com/@WeNotDivingThis is easily in my top 3 favourite episodes of the 170-odd we've done. The sound of it was originally pretty terrible though, it was a constant battle in the early days of the podcast to get people recording in good spaces.Luckily we kept most of the individual mic channels and the software has come on leaps and bounds recently, so it's now very easy to convert a very roomy mic recording into something that sounds like it was done in a proper radio studio.Steve Davis was one of the very biggest sporting celebrities in the 1980s. He totally dominated the sport of snooker in Tiger Woods-like fashion, winning the world title six times and setting unprecedented levels of excellence in front of enormous television audiences. The 18m who tuned in on BBC2 to watch him lose the 1985 final on the final ball of the final frame, well after midnight, is still a record. But he's also a major music head, DJ and modular synth-playing member of experimental group The Utopia Strong, who has always been a very interesting character. The Utopia Strong releases since we first broadcast this conversation two years ago are... well, strong, especially the BBC Sessions release which was recorded in a live session at the legendary Maida Vale studios. And he's also Eddie Hearn's Godfather. So we talk about all of the above, but perhaps most interestingly the experience of fame at that level and how to cope with it. Having a really top manager helps, we discover. This is well worth a re-listen if you caught it first time round, and if you didn't - well, you're in for a treat.--If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! There are two tiers - "Solidarity" for $4 a month, which features the show without ads, regular bonus podcasts, and extra content. And "Musicality" which for a mere $10 a month gets you all the music we release on Hotflush and affiliate labels AND other music too, some of which never comes out anywhere else. You can also make a one-off donation to the podcast using a card, with Paypal, or your Ethereum wallet! Kay is still on her terribly important work assignment to Rimini this week, so beams into the studio on the airwaves as she, James and Boyd discuss everything from Boyd's new foray into the world of video influencers to Kay's poolside celebrity encounters. We're also joined on the show by Such Brave Girls creator/star Kat Sadler (31:25-50:35), as we tackle that show's second season (1:20:18), plus in a bumper review episode, we dive back into Squid Game on Netflix (1:14:26), The Bear on Disney+ (1:00:44) and Aussie crime thriller Scrublands on BBC2 (1:28:56).(Episode 343)Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. Welcome Back 2Legs Fam! It's been nearly 20 years since Paul's latter day 21st Century Masterpiece Chaos and Creation In The Backyard. Where did that time go? To accompany and promote the record Paul held an intimate gathering of fans and friends at Abbey Road, recorded in Studio 2 to demonstrate some of the creative processes that he and The Beatles used to employ there and have a bit of fun along the way. Filmed on 28 July 2005 and originally broadcast on BBC2 17 December 2005 and PBS in the USA 27th February 2006 and directed by Simon Hilton "Chaos And Creation At Abbey Road" provides such an intimate glimpse of Macca at work playing familiar tunes in a whole new arrangement ('Band On The Run', 'Lady Madonna', 'I've Got A Feeling') among several from the forthcoming album which dropped in September of that year. Did you watch this upon initial release? or when it was bundled in the CD set? Let us know in the comments below! We love deep dives back into stuff like this! We hope you do too! Peace Andy and Tom

It's the question asked by anybody of an inquiring mind (and the hosts of The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour are no exception) when faced with baffling circumstance and an unexplained outcome: Did that actually just happen? In fact, so determined are they to get to the bottom of it all that they've asked The ExtonMoss Experiment to come round and help solve the mysteries of the universe. Or of Bristol, at the very least. Yes, passing under the rickety analytical equipment knocked together in a remote barn is BBC2's landmark cultural exploration of the outré from 1973, Leap In The Dark. Covering an array of psychic phenomena such as astrology, clairvoyance, divining and walking around a field for hours on end with sticks, this thoughtful yet playfully sceptical magazine-show is sure to raise more questions than it answers... Is Gordon Snell sponsored by Lee Bender? Is Linda Blandford sponsored by BUPA? And has Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water still not sponsored that cottage yet? Wave your dowsing rod over the Play button and you might just find out... The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is a free podcast from iPorle Media, which holds production copyright. Send us a textWelcome to You Heard it Here Last where we talk about news, you've already heard.https://www.enworld.org/threads/diamond-comic-distributors-files-bankruptcy-sells-alliance-game-distributors.709593/Diamond Comic Distributors, the owner of Alliance Game Distributors has filed for bankruptcy. In a message from Chuck Parker the President of Diamond comic Distributors he outlines the necessity for the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy which would allow Diamond Comic Distributors to restructure and meet many of its significant financial obligations. While this could likely be very bad news for an already struggling comic book industry his message does have some good news;“We have already received a commitment from Universal Distribution to purchase Alliance Game Distributors coupled with a signed letter of intent to purchase Diamond UK, and we remain committed to pursuing offers for all Diamond lines of business.” Parker said in his statement. While it's not likely this news will cause any significant issues or problems with game distribution it is noteworthy that Goodman Games signed an exclusive deal with Diamond in December of 2023.https://goodman-games.com/blog/2023/12/04/goodman-games-inks-exclusive-distribution-deal-with-diamond-book-distributors/Nasty business stuff. While that is news, it's not why I bring this up. Reading the “Quiet Interesting” post on Facebook is what made this one interesting. The Diana Jones Award is named after The Adventures of Indiana Jones Roleplaying Game that was released by TSR in 1984. It is considered one of the least loved and most savaged roleplaying games of all times and eventually every last copy was burned. The trophy itself is a Lucite pyramid made up of the last legible remains from those burned books. All you can read is “diana Jones” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Jones_AwardMike, Christina, did you guys know this origin story and if you did, why the hell didn't you tell me?[Kick to Mike and Christina]Also, why does Steven Spielberg have such a great track record with moves, but a terrible one when it comes to turning those movies into games. Five years on from the first Covid lockdown, what can be done to support the 200,000 ‘Lockdown babies' born when lockdown was at its most restrictive, between 23 March and 4 July 2020? These babies have extraordinary young-life stories: Mums giving birth alone; doctors in hazmat suits; babies meeting fathers and grandparents for the first time online; no health visitors; no family cuddles; no baby groups. Now aged four and approaching five, lockdown seems to have had lasting effects on some. What can be done to help? Nuala McGovern is joined by Nicola Botting, Professor of Developmental Disorders at City St George's, University of London and co-lead on The Born in Covid Year – Core Lockdown Effects (BICYCLE) study, Jane Harris, CEO of Speech and Language UK, and mum of three, Frankie Eshun.Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding died of breast cancer in 2021 at the age of 39. Led by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust with funding from the Christie Charity, Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal, and other charities, it is one of the world's first research programmes to identify breast cancer risks in younger women without a family history of the disease. What's all this mean?[Kick to Mike]Christina, thoughts?[Kick to Christina]Speaking of IPs, or at least we will be speaking of IPs in the near future, stay tuned to our regularly scheduled program for our upcoming episode on Intellectual Properties that should be games we have this bit of news from across the pond.https://www.enworld.org/threads/qi-mentions-the-diana-jones-awards.709578/QI is a BBC2 quiz show that called out the Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Roleplaying Games on it's social media accounts. I mean we have this one with Indiana Jones and then we also have the ET Atari Video Game. Both considered the worst ever in their genres? You guys might want to keep that in mind when thinking about the IPs that need to be made into roleplaying games…I'm looking at you Avatar.[Kick to Mike and Christina]And there you have it. All the news, you've already heard.
American conductor Marin Alsop was the first woman to lead major orchestras in the UK, South America and in the United States, becoming principal conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Nominated for Grammy Awards five times, in 2013 she became the first ever woman to lead the Last Night Of The Proms, and is now regarded as one of the greatest conductors in the world. She talks to John Wilson about her professional musician parents who nurtured her love of music and supported her career choice from the age of 9 when she first revealed she wanted to be a conductor. Marin also talks about Leonard Bernstein, the great American composer and conductor, who inspired her ambitions and later became a mentor to her. She also chooses Carl Jung's work The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, and explains how his theories have helped her in leading orchestras around the world.Producer: Edwina PitmanMusic and archive used: Serenade in C major for String Orchestra, Op. 48; Valse, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, New York City Ballet Orchestra, 1986 Irish Spring commercial: "Clean as a Whistle" 1980 Leonard Bernstein, Young People's Concerts: "What is Classical Music?", CBS Television, 24 January 1959 Omnibus: Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, BBC2, 10 May 1985 Archive of Leonard Bernstein and Marin Alsop at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, 1987 Leonard Bernstein, Young People's Concerts: "What Does Music Mean?", CBS Television, 18 January 1958 Archive of OrchKids concert, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Woman's Hour, BBC Radio 4, 26 July, 2005 Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop Last Night of the Proms, BBC1, 7 September 2013 Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, "Resurrection", Gustav Mahler, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop
Having worked as a BBC television journalist, and as political editor for the Observer newspaper, Robert Harris published his debut novel Fatherland in 1992. A counterfactual story set in the 1960s that imagines Nazi Germany had won the Second World War, the book was a global bestseller. Since then Robert Harris has written 15 novels, mainly historical fiction which ranges from the ancient Roman politics of Pompeii and his Cicero trilogy, to the Restoration era manhunt of Act Of Oblivion, and Papal thriller Conclave. His most recent novel Precipice is about the romantic relationship between prime minister Herbert Asquith young socialite Venetia Stanley during the First World War. Robert Harris tells John Wilson about how reading The Origins of the Second World War by the historian A. J. P. Taylor, as a teenager ignited his interest in looking at history from perspectives that challenge the accepted narratives. Later, reading both the fiction and non-fiction of George Orwell inspired him to attempt to make writing about politics into an art form, as Orwell had done in works including 1984.Producer: Edwina PitmanArchive used: Did Hitler Cause The War?, BBC1, 9 July 1961 The Hitler Diaries, Newsnight, BBC2, 8 July 1985 Reading from Fatherland, Robert Harris Reading from 1984, George Orwell, BBC Radio 4, 2 January 1984 Reading from The Ghost, Robert Harris

We are in shock that it has taken us this long to cover the cult classic that is Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979). We have Rslaugesen over on Patreon to thank for pointing out this glaring oversight.Once we got started, it was hard for us to stop talking about the Life of Brian. British comedy was a staple of our childhoods and Monty Python was one of our favourites. It was a treat to follow the development of this movie from Jesus Christ: Lust for Glory to a Sliding Doors-style story of Brian Cohen, born in the manger over from Christ. Whilst Monty Python were probably trying to make a parody of 1970s Britain rather than a historically accurate portrait of first century CE Judea, we still found this film intriguing. From wolf's nipples to imperialism, we take you through all the best Roman scenes… and perhaps a few non-Roman scenes as well. Who can resist talking about the Virgin Mandy?Part of the appeal of Life of Brian is the fact that it is not afraid to make fun of the Romans (or anyone) and shows a much less glamorous side of the empire. Quite the contrast to the epics of the 1950s and 1960s.Things to Look Out ForFar too many ‘reenactments' of our favourite momentsThe Biggus Dickus sceneWhat Have the Romans Ever Done For Us? James returns from his Taycation this week, but don't fret because to make up for that we have Gary Oldman on the show this week discussing the joy of Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses, and Eve Hewson chatting The Perfect Couple on Netflix. And speaking of Slow Horses, the arrival of Season 4 on Apple TV+ is cause for much celebration and is one of three triumphant returns this week, alongside Colin From Accounts, which finally makes its way to BBC2, and ITV's The Tower.
We made it! 300 episodes (not counting the many episodes of Pilot+ or the spoiler specials) feels like quite the milestone, even if we weren't able to do a live show because James has tickets to see Taylor Swift. He did manage to drag himself away from Eras Tour prep (those friendship bracelets don't make themselves) to drop in and join Boyd and Kay for the 300th show, though, despite being on holiday. Could it be because Boyd and Kay both refused to watch yet another Walking Dead show? No comment. We do, however, get a run down of Dead City on Sky, as well as round two of Pachinko on Apple TV+, We Might Regret This on BBC2, and the return of Sherwood on BBC1, and on the subject of Sherwood, the creator and writer of the show, James Graham, is this week's guest. Plus we have a few of you on as Well, leaving us testimonials to mark our threehundredieth birthday. Hooray!
We have vampires AND zombies this week in an undead double bill (Kay was thrilled) as well as people hurling themselves to a watery doom. More specifically, we tackle the second season of Interview With The Vampire on BBC2, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon on Sky Max, and Totally Completely Fine on ITVX. But that's not all, because we pull out some Paramount+ recommendations for those looking to drop into that streaming service (assuming you've forgiven them for cancelling Halo!), reel off some comfort watches for maternity leave and crunch some stats over recent streaming figures. All that while Boyd beams in from his holiday in NYC. Now that's dedication.
