This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comIn this week's SZD Overtime episode for subscribers, we examine two programs that were dominant in the 2000s and are still, all these years later, trying to recapture some of their old magic. Florida lost to USF, endangering Billy Napier's tenure once again. Virginia Tech dropped to 0-2 with losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt and is staring down a failed hire in Brent Pry. Richard and Alex discuss what's gone wrong at Florida, why we're still having these conversations four years into Napier's tenure, and who would actually be in charge of firing Napier. Plus, we cover why Virginia Tech can't get anything right post-Frank Beamer and why they're now in an existential moment. Is Tech even a good job in 2025? Let's talk about it. Producer: Anthony Vito

The Devil Within - Season One In the bleak midwinter of 1988, the quiet town of Jefferson Township, New Jersey, was shaken to its core. A mother was found brutally murdered. Her teenage son vanished into the night. What unfolded in the hours and days that followed would horrify even the most seasoned investigators — and feed directly into the fever dream of the Satanic Panicsweeping across America. This was the case that introduced listeners to The Devil Within. It wasn't just a true crime story — it was the beginning of a descent into fear, paranoia, and the darker corners of human belief. Now, we're re-releasing The Jersey Devil with a twist. Host and writer Branden Morgan returns to the story with new commentary, reflecting on what it meant to tell this tale the first time, what he's uncovered since, and why the Sullivan case still lingers in the American imagination. This re-release also marks a milestone: the launch of the new MGM+ documentary series Let the Devil In, based on season one of The Devil Within. The four-part series — premiering August 31st — expands on the original story with exclusive interviews, never-before-seen evidence, and firsthand accounts from detectives, first responders, and those who lived through the nightmare. In This Episode • The brutal 1988 murder that shocked Jefferson Township. • How the case became entwined with the national hysteria of the Satanic Panic. • New behind-the-scenes reflections from Branden Morgan. • How this story connects to the upcoming MGM+ series Let the Devil In. Why Revisit This Story Now? Because some stories never truly leave us. They echo, they evolve, and sometimes, they return in ways we never expect. The Jersey Devil is not only a cornerstone of this podcast — it's the origin of a much larger journey that's about to play out on screen. Host Michael Rand starts with a bleak night during a bleak stretch for the Twins. They had a pitifully small crowd at Target Field. The woeful White Sox drubbed them 12-3. David Festa was shut down for the year. And 90 losses grows more likely every day. 10:00: Are the Vikings headed for a regression? 15:00: Randy Johnson on Gophers football. 29:00: A big-time recruit for Gophers women's basketball.

The term supergroup is bandied around too often these days when a group of talented musicians from established bands try something together. It creates almost unrealistic expectations among fans of the respective members' bands, who are more often than not left disappointed due to the logical fact that this 'supergroup' is only one quarter or less of the band they are widely known for.Which is why HEAVY won't be labelling Bleak Squad a supergroup - although many will.Featuring the unlikely quartet of Mick Turner (Dirty Three, Mess Esque), Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, The Birthday Party), Adalita (Magic Dirt) and Marty Brown (Art of Fighting), Bleak Squad unite for the first time on their brooding, noir-rock debut LP, Strange Love, out now on Poison City Records. The album is a combined output of four seasoned musicians who have come together to express themselves musically in ways other than, as well as a continuation of, the music they are known and loved for. Prepare to put expectations aside and appreciate the music for what it is, rather than what you think it should be, as Adalita sits down with HEAVY to talk about the album and how Bleak Squad became a musical family. We start by asking how she feels about Strange Love."Great," she enthused. "It's great to finally have it out there (because) it's been in the making for quite a few years. We've been working on it since, I think, 2019, maybe? We got together and just jammed some stuff and recorded back then, and we've been working on it for a few years on and off because everyone's so busy with other things. So it's great to finally have it out in the world."We follow that by asking Adalita to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."Well, we really didn't know what we were doing," she laughed. "We just got together. Marty called us up and said, 'do you want to get together and maybe collaborate and see what comes out of it?' We all said yes and got together and brought in our own songs, or we brought in riffs and things that were half done and just to see if we could collaborate on it. And it was really great because straight away we clicked and there was real chemistry. The songs just flowed, and we decided to record it, and it was really low pressure. We didn't know what was going to come out of it, but we ended up having a record and then suddenly we're a band, and we're going to tour it."In the full chat, Adalita highlighted the collaborative nature of Bleak Squad, where each member contributed their own songs, resulting in a diverse sound. She praised her bandmates for their musical talents and emphasized the enjoyable, low-pressure environment that allowed for creative exploration. She also shared insights into her collaboration with Mick Harvey and Mick Turner, the instinctual approach to determining vocal parts, and the different challenges of writing and recording outside of her long-time band Magic Dirt. We talked about the formation of Bleak Squad and how it came about, what each member brought from their other musical projects to the project, their first live gig and how the nerves were, establishing a bond with her new musical partners, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
The prospects for a Palestinian two-state solution appear increasingly bleak as Israel presses ahead with its military campaign to seize control of Gaza City while advancing a major settlement project that would sever the West Bank from East Jerusalem. On BFM 89.9, James weighs in on how international powers are responding and what could halt this devastating war. Separately, James talks to AzNews about the equally bleak prospects
I like to try and kick things off on Saturday mornings with a bit of cheer, but I tell you what, it's hard to look beyond yet another bleak milestone in the appalling war in Gaza. Overnight, the UN-backed food security body has confirmed famine in Gaza City. It has officially reached that threshold, the first time famine has ever been declared in the Middle East. As the UN Secretary General declared, this is a man-made catastrophe. There are many, many third party countries that want to get more aid into Gaza. A shortage of food is not a problem, access is. Two years ago, immediately after the October 7th attacks, I said a few things on this show. I want to share with you again a few words from that day. “Israel has the right to exist in peace. Palestine should have the freedom of statehood. Both of those things can be true. The deliberate targeting of Israeli civilians is an appalling, utterly inexcusable act of violence. The systematic flattening of Gaza, no water, no power, no food, is an unacceptably brutal collective punishment for a huge civilian population where almost half of people are children. Both of those things can be true, too.” As the war has progressed, the scale and nature of Israel's reprisals has made it obvious to many millions of fair-minded people that a country born from the gravest atrocities last century is now also responsible for them. Figures from a leaked Israeli database this week suggest 83% of those killed in Gaza have been civilians. Of course, Israel denies genocide and war crimes. But independent verification is nigh impossible, as no journalists are allowed in and many of those on the ground have been killed in Israeli attacks. One of the many great tragedies for all of this is that it has become increasingly clear that Israel has played into Hamas' hands. Evil as the strategy might have been, Hamas wanted to spur an extreme and disproportionate response. Motivated by their own agendas and self-preservation, Israel's leaders fell for it. And now we have kids, mere minutes from the Mediterranean, with ribs sticking out of their skin, dying of malnutrition. The thing I still don't understand is how any Israeli leader thinks this will ultimately make their people safer. Maybe in the short-term Israelis can sleep easy at night, but every innocent person killed in Gaza breeds hate in five other survivors. The war in Gaza has condemned generations of Palestinians and Israelis to insecurity. I'll finish with a line I wrote and shared with you immediately after the October 7th attack, which sadly feels just as relevant today. “It's a cycle. Hate and violence is a cycle. There is no way for any party to kill and fight their way to a lasting peaceful resolution. Hamas' attack has spurred the Israeli reprisal. The reprisal will spur Palestinians into violence in the future, which in turn will spur an Israeli reprisal. Rinse the blood and repeat. Hate breeds hate breeds hate.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Don't Give Up: Hope in Bleak TimesBismillah. The past few weeks have been incredibly difficult for the Ummah — especially for our brothers and sisters in Gaza. And it's not just these few weeks. It's been 23 months. Almost two years of relentless destruction. Every time we think we've seen the worst, we're proven wrong. Every time we think we've hit rock bottom, Israel and the powers that support her prove that evil has no limit. We are now witnessing full-blown famine. Starvation. Infants with nothing between their skin and bones. And on top of that — we hear of America burning 500 tonnes of food rather than allowing it to reach Palestine. At times like this, it's tempting to throw in the towel. To say:“We've done everything we can.”“We've shouted, we've protested, we've boycotted, we've flooded social media.”And yet, the powers that be… remain. But when that sense of despair starts creeping in, we must pause. We must take a step back and remember:We are looking through the lens of our short lives. We live 60, 70 years — maybe 50 as adults — and from that narrow perspective, it feels like there's no hope. But history tells a different story. When we zoom out, we see a sunnah of Allah unfold:Evil never wins in the end.No matter how powerful. Fir'aun claimed he was God Most High — Allah destroyed him. Yet many lived and died under his tyranny and may have thought:“Where is Allah's help?”“Where is our du‘a?”Allah addresses this feeling directly in the Qur'an — in the verse I opened with. He speaks of previous nations, believers who were so shaken by hardship that even their Prophets asked, “When will the help of Allah come?”And Allah replies:“Indeed, the help of Allah is near.”But near from whose perspective? Not always ours. That's why in Surah Ibrahim, Allah reminds us:“Do not think that Allah is unaware of the actions of the oppressors. He is merely delaying them for a Day when eyes will stare in horror.”We are people of hope. We do not despair when times get tough. And in this brief khutbah, I want to share three points in history to remind us: we carry the torch of hope.1. The Trench in the Cold of MedinaYear 5 after Hijrah. The Battle of the Trench. After the losses at Uhud, Quraysh saw an opportunity to wipe out Islam. They gathered the largest army Arabia had ever seen: 10,000 strong. They were backed by Banu Ghatafan from the north, and allied with Jews from Khaybar, including Banu Qurayzah from within Medina.Rasulullah ﷺ had only 3,000 companions to defend the city. It was winter. The Sahaba were hungry, cold, and exhausted. Salman al-Farisi suggested digging a trench — a Persian military tactic. And they did. Day and night. Starving, shivering, digging non-stop.Then they hit a boulder they couldn't break. They called the Prophet ﷺ. He struck it once — a spark flew.“Allahu Akbar!” he cried.A second strike — another spark.“Allahu Akbar!”Third strike — the boulder shattered.“Allahu Akbar!”The companions asked: What was the takbir about?Rasulullah ﷺ said:* With the first spark, I saw Persia falling to the Muslims.* With the second, Rome.* With the third, Yemen. In the darkest moment, he gave them light. He gave them vision. He didn't just say “Have hope.”He gave them reasons to hope. And history proved him right. Islam triumphed. Not through numbers, but through divine help — a storm that forced the enemy to retreat. A month-long siege broken without a single full-scale battle.2. The Fall of Baghdad (1258 CE)Hulagu Khan — grandson of Genghis Khan — invaded Baghdad.Within days, 800,000 were slaughtered.Libraries burned. Books tossed into the Tigris until the river ran black with ink.Muslim writers thought it was the end of time.Non-Muslim historians wrote:“This is the day Islam died.”But Islam didn't die.Baghdad fell, but Cairo rose. So did Damascus. The Delhi Sultanate grew. And from these ashes, the Ottomans would eventually rise.Even Hulagu's cousin, Berke Khan, accepted Islam.Within a generation, the very dynasty that destroyed Baghdad became a Muslim dynasty. And amidst all of this — scholars kept working.* Imam al-Nawawi, who focused on preserving and teaching knowledge.* Ibn Taymiyyah, the scholar-warrior.* Ibn Ata'illah, who focused on tazkiyah and purifying hearts.* Al-‘Izz ibn ‘Abd al-Salam, who spoke truth to power and engaged with the rulers .Despite the devastation, they didn't stop. They carried on.3. The Fall of Apartheid (1994)From 1948 — the same year Israel was created — South Africa began enforcing apartheid. For decades, the people resisted: boycotts, protests, global pressure. In 1994, apartheid fell. The same Nelson Mandela who was once branded a terrorist by the West was now hailed as a hero — by the very same powers that had supported the apartheid regime.Let that sink in.The same powers that supported apartheid in South Africa are the ones supporting apartheid in Palestine today. And just like before — they can be defeated.Social Media: Double-Edged SwordToday, we have a powerful tool: social media. It's helped shift global opinion. It's brought awareness. But it's also draining us.We doomscroll. We see starvation, death, suffering — again and again. Two things happen:* We either fall into despair…* Or we become numb.We start thinking this is normal. So yes — use social media, but set a limit. 15 minutes. Half an hour. Post, share, amplify — and then get back to work. Real work.Know Your Role, Play Your PartNot all resistance looks the same.Imam al-Nawawi didn't fight with swords. He wrote books that still strengthen the Ummah today.Ibn Taymiyyah led at the frontlines.Ibn Ata'illah focused on hearts.Al-‘Izz ibn ‘Abd al-Salam engaged with the rulers. Some of us are better behind the scenes. Some are activists, some are scholars, some are thinkers, some are organisers. Some are better on the mic, others behind a pen.Don't judge someone's contribution just because it's not the same as yours. We need all hands on deck.“Allah will not ask you about what you couldn't do — but He will ask what you did with what you could.”May Allah give victory to the oppressed.May He feed the hungry, clothe the exposed, and strengthen the weak.May He unite our ranks and guide our efforts.May He grant us clarity, discipline, and sincere hearts in service of this Ummah. Join Jim and Greg for Wednesday's 3 Martini Lunch as they welcome President Trump's big trade deal with Japan, cringe at the GOP's electoral prospects in Virginia this year, and ask where the $100 million in wildfire relief donations went?First, they're glad to see President Trump complete a massive trade deal with Japan, with reciprocal tariffs at 15 percent and Japan pledging to invest more than half a trillion dollars in the U.S. Jim says more deals like this and fewer tariff announcements on social media will be good for economic stability and growth.Next, they groan as the prospects are looking pretty grim thus far for Virginia GOP gubernatorial nominee Winsome Earle-Sears. While GOP nominee Winsome Earle-Sears remains a solid conservative, she trails badly in the polls and fundraising against Democrat Abigail Spanberger. And the Republican running for lieutenant governor is bogged down in controversy that is dividing the party. Finally, they highlight an effort to track the $100 million that was donated to California wildfire victims in a star--studded benefit concert earlier this year. It turns out the money was given to non-profits but there's not a lot of evidence yet that displaced homeowners are seeing much, if any, money or assistance. Please visit our great sponsors:Upgrade your skincare routine with Caldera Lab and see the difference. Ben is joined for the final time during this Wimbledon by Ricky Dimon, to discuss the fourth round matches that were played and how the quarterfinals and beyond are shaping up. We start with the bleakest moment in recent tennis memory, when Grigor Dimitrov was up two sets to none on an injured Jannik Sinner, only to suffer his own sudden acute pectoral injury and be forced to retire mid-match for the fifth major tournament in a row. We then discuss Sinner's not-great health outlook as well, and then shift to the rest of the happenings in the middle round of Wimbledon, including the wildness of the utter failure of automated electronic line calling on Centre Court during Pavlyuchenkova-Kartal. Trump's birthday parade bored the few people who bothered watching – and offended those who actually care about the military, unlike the president himself. Feature: Bleak Week returns for Year 4, we talk to programmers behind the festival This year marks the 4th year of the American Cinematheque’s Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair, a weeklong festival dedicated to screening films with dark and bleak themes. In this year’s lineup, you’ll find screenings of Michael Haneke’s English adaptation of Funny Games, the Soviet anti-war film Come and See, and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies. You’ll also find that the Year 4 lineup includes introductions/Q&As with the likes of Bill Hader, Elliot Gould, and Brady Corbet. Outside of the usual festival screenings here in Los Angeles, the American Cinematheque has partnered with other arthouse theaters across the country, and even The Prince Charles Cinema in London. Joining us to discuss this year’s iteration of the festival is Chris LeMaire, lead programmer on the American Cinematheque’s Bleak Week, and Grant Moninger, American Cinematheque’s Artistic Director. We also have our critics, Charles Solomon, Claudia Puig and Peter Rainer, commenting on what about the festival has allowed it to garner interest. Bleak Week runs from June 1-7. You can find this year’s Bleak Week lineup by clicking here or on bleakweek.com
Legislation with massive implications for clean energy in the US has been making progress in Congress. The Republican party's “big beautiful bill”, introducing sweeping changes to taxes and government spending, would phase out most of the tax credits for low-carbon energy that were created, expanded or extended in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022.To unpack the proposals and examine what they might mean for the US and the world, host Ed Crooks is joined by some of the Energy Gang's top policy wonks:Amy Myers-Jaffe, Director of NYU's Energy, Climate Justice, and Sustainability LabRobbie Orvis, Senior Director for Modelling and Analysis at the thinktank Energy InnovationRay Long, President and Chief Executive of the American Council on Renewable Energy They discuss whether the phaseout of tax credits for wind, solar and storage will deter the development of renewable energy. The credits have created a whole industry to support investment in new renewables projects. What happens if those credits go away? The group also dig into the crucial details of the proposals, including changes to the transferability of tax credits, and more stringent provisions on “foreign entities of concern” or FEOCs. Those rules could affect the majority of clean energy projects in the US. As of Tuesday 20th May, the game is not over. Some Republicans in the House and the Senate senators think the proposals don't fit with the administration's bigger goals, and have been fighting to save at least some of the credits. The gang set out the various options for how the negotiations over the bill could play out, and assess the potential damage. And they ask the question: could clean energy in the US actually be better off without support from tax credits?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I spoke with Anonymous Banker, an M&A advisor with a front-row view into the market for buying and selling digital media companies. Needless to say, it's a buyer's market.AB breaks down the market for digital publishing assets – broadly those with page-based models – into three types of buyers:HarvestersCAC jockeysVanity projects/rich person playthings“If you're a publisher with a mostly ad-supported site, odds are your business will be worth less next year than it is now,” he said. Deals are still getting done, but the buyers are different. These are no-name PE firms above ice cream shops in the outskirts of Miami. We go through the list, which ranges from Valnet to Static Media to Savage Ventures to Regent. The playbook is to buy undervalued media properties, slash costs, and milk the programmatic revenue with hyper-lean models that rudely dispense with the nostalgia of “when the going was good.”“Any content they invest in has to be ROI positive within 30 days,” AB said. “You'll never see them spend $20 million hoping advertisers show up. Those days are done.”Other topics we covered:How AI uncertainty is creating overhang that depresses valuations and makes long-term modeling nearly impossibleWhy the most resilient media businesses are lead-generation machines or conversion front-endsWe debate whether the Chernin Group content-to-commerce thesis was wrongHow Substack's recommendation engine is the most efficient user acquisition channel in mediaWhat kinds of content investors still believe in (hint: high-intent verticals, not general news)Check out The Rebooting's new media product research reportSign up for The Rebooting's Online Forum on May 21 at 1pmET featuring a case study on how Recurrent migrated its CMS across a portfolio of sites without disruption

Today we're bringing you an episode of Smart Girl Dumb Questions, the new podcast by one of our frequent guest moderators, Nayeema Raza. Nayeema asks the questions we're all thinking to big thinkers in this new show. It is brimming with curiosity, open-mindedness and a willingness to learn – values we hold dear at Open to Debate. As fertility rates plummet, and Millenials and Gen Z increasingly cite climate change and the state of the world as reasons they're not having children, Nayeema asks: is the future really too bleak to have babies? Her guest is journalist Cleo Abram, a YouTuber who has amassed over 5 million subscribers as she tells optimistic tech stories. Nayeema and Cleo break down quantum, the rise of robots and how technology shifts from IVF to artificial wombs will change not just if, but how, we have babies. Also on the agenda: the media's bias – not toward left or right, but toward negativity and the opportunity for more curious, independent and fact-based journalism. If you like this episode, you'll enjoy Nayeema's episode with Mark Cuban about capitalism, Neil deGrasse Tyson about physics, and two members of Gen Alpha about screen time.
