Dr. Doug Newton is the Chief Medical Officer at Rula Health, a tech-enabled provider group that offers therapy, psychiatry, care coordination, and other supportive behavioral health services with a whole-person approach. Mental health disorders are diagnosed and managed using a combination of sound clinical judgment and measurement-informed care, which involves using patient-reported data and other objective measures. Normalizing mental health and using objective measures can help doctors bring up the topic with people of all ages to develop a personalized plan to maintain good physical and psychological health. Doug explains, "We do know that the behavioral health crisis was exacerbated by COVID. Still, unfortunately, for most demographic groupings, it was already starting before the pandemic hit. Using adolescents as an example, because I'm a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist by training, I saw this trend, so I looked at the data. We saw that was already a problem for kids, adolescents, and adults, where the rates of depression and anxiety were going up, as well as despair, as well as suicidal ideation - and, unfortunately, completion - were going up prior to COVID. It went up even further with COVID. We're seeing, unfortunately, either continued or slightly increased in the years post-COVID as well." "The next component is, okay, great, let's get people to equitable and quick quality care. That's been harder. And so I do think that telehealth has allowed us to do that. I think it's allowed more equitable care across rural and urban areas. It's allowed providers and patients to find one another in a way we haven't been able to before. And that's great. I think the next frontier is making sure that we are providing the right care, and we can measure ways of providing the right care to that person. Highly personalized outcomes-based care is the frontier that we're going into next, and that's going to be critical." #RulaHealth #BehavioralHealth #MentalHealth #YouthMentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #MeasurementInformedCare #COVID Rula.com Download the transcript here

Easton Nelson's layup in the final 20 seconds sent Exira-EHK to a double-overtime win over CAM 73-71 on Friday night in front of a packed house in Anita. The Spartans led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter but the Cougars clawed their way back in the second half. The Spartans led 34-23 at halftime and the Cougars trimmed the lead to 4 at 44-40 by the end of the third. CAM got within 2 points five different times in the fourth quarter and finally tied it in the final seconds on a slicing layup by Seth Hensley. Tied at 57 the two teams traded blows in the extra session and combined to go 10-10 at the free throw line. The final two free throws in overtime were drained by Sam Foreman to tie the game at 63 and send it to another extra period. With the game square at 71 the Spartans ran a set that got Easton Nelson a great look on the left block that he banked in to put Sparty up 73-71. CAM had one last chance but a scramble for the ball after Chase Jahde hit the deck and tried to put up a shot from his knees let time run out. After the game Nelson talked about that final bucket. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/NelsonCAM1.mp3 Spartans head coach Doug Newton was proud of the response his team had in the big moments. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/NewtonCAM1.mp3 Cash Emgarten led the Spartans with 18 points and he said a win like this should give the team a great boost. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/EmgartenCAM1.mp3 Derrek Kommes added 16 points and Trey Petersen had 12 to help the Spartans move to 3-0 on the season. They get right back after it against IKM-Manning on Saturday afternoon. CAM was led by 28 points from Sam Foreman and 22 from Chase Jahde. The Cougars fall to 1-2 and will head to face a tough West Harrison team on Tuesday. Listen to the full postgame interview with Coach Newton below.

Pastor Writer: Conversations on Writing, Reading, and the Christian Life
Doug Newton spent 40 years as a pastor and ministry leader. He knew writing was a part of his call and this year published a three-part book series entitled Fresh Eyes. We discuss his process and organizational techniques.
Episode 40 was strong. The Ed was at the peak of his powers as he talked about his upcoming elective surgery and called in to the show to scare us with both his big tough man voice and his woman voice. He even said, "I pity the fool" at my request, which was glorious. In addition to Ed, Face Ventura and the Whale helped me go through the Magnificent Seven greatest calls in sports announcer history. Number 6 was a personal favorite, even though it probably didn't belong on this list. I also played "Doug on Demand" a phone call with my best friend Doug Newton who tends to disparage the show, but the call had some good stories about his job as a dispatcher on the Colorado State Patrol as well as his admission to getting a tattoo of a lego man. Doug really likes legos. We also talked a little bit about Olympic hockey and curling, and I played a song to help enlighten people to the rules of hockey courtesy the Mike O'Meara show. The Vertically Striped Music Recommendation was the self-title album from "The Trampolines" which released in 2005.
