This week on the show Maine and Emil recap the 2019 IBJJF Pan American championships in California that happened this week. We talk about every single finals match for the black belt adults, and highlight some of our favorite standout performances and techniques for the event. Plus we talk about a few other matches we thought deserved attention for the event. Maine shares his thoughts on closeouts. In the recap for the women’s finals we talk about Gabbi Garcia making her competitive Jiu-jitsu return taking double gold in weight and absolute. Ffion Davies winning her second black belt major event for IBJJF on her quest for a 2019 grand slam. And other stand out matches for the women. Maine and Emil talk about Adam Wardzinski’a impressive performance over Leandro Lo, and main talks about how much she enjoys watching Adams butterfly guard game. We talk about Hulks finals matches, green hair and all, and the piece he pushes. We also break down some interesting back takes from Levi Jones Leary, and his finals match versus Renato Canuto. After all of that we move into the preview section and man is it a big one we start off talking about Fight to Win 106 in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Featuring Cyborg, Talita Alencar, Tubby Alequin, Kevin Gallagher of the old man grappling hour, Formiga, Dustin Akbari, Enrico Cocco, and tons of more outstanding grapplers. The Florida events are always loaded with top black belt talent that got both hosts excited for the event. After that we move into our Preview of King of the Mat 5 featuring staples of the promotion and returning champion Dante Leon, and perennial top contender Quentin Rosenweg. This event always produces fireworks and highlights. We then moved into our preview of Third Coast Grapplings event, a qualifying event in order to earn your spot on the upcoming Third Coast Grappling 2 event streamed on FloGrappling. Maine and Emil, really love qualifiers as it gives grapplers a chance to earn their spot on big events. Speaking of running your spot on a big event the 2019 ADCC Brazilian Trials / South American trials, taking place this weekend as well at the point of the recording we did not have a bracket or any athlete registration lists although this event is typically one of the larger qualifiers for ADCC, and is sure to produce some outstanding matches between top competitors looking to earn their spot on the biggest No-Gi event with the most prestige in the world. Given that this is the only qualifier in South America it is sure to be stacked with top talent in big names looking for their shot at ADCC gold. We also previewed Tap Cancer Out Black Belt showcase as well featuring Mark Vives, Frank Rosenthal, Nick Newell, Mike Davila, Rick Hawn, Tiago Alves and more. This event goes toward a great cause and were really happy to see it taking place and showcasing great Jiu-jitsu. Recorded on 3-25-2019

The tables are turned as the host is interviewed by a listener of the podcast. Gibran Maciel is an American Brown Belt in Jiu Jitsu under Dustin Akbari at Team Alpha Male. He is also a public affairs consultant, podcaster, and he recently opened East Sac BJJ. Intro These are just some of the questions I was asked by listener & friend Blake Flow: Give me a elevator pitch on your life 5 lines grew up, how you got here and what you do now? Where did you go to college ? Major ? Why ? What did you want to be when you grow up? We got you into podcasting? What drove your interest in combat sports? What was the transition from San Diego to Sacramento like? What can BJJ teach you out side of self defense and discipline? Are there any soft skills you think come from it ? Can’t you learn how to lose and get back up from anything not just sports? Are you still afraid to screw up technique in front of your sensei? What is that like for your students? What do you do for fun outside of Jitsu? What can you tell about a person when you fight them? You get any trolls on any of the podcasts pages or anything ? What kind of trolls ? What would you do to make adults less intimidated to start BJJ?
