The number of books being banned and challenged in schools and libraries has increased exponentially in the USA in recent years. These attacks on our freedom to read are not coming just from fringe zealots -- they are being embedded into legislation across the country, and that's a BIG problem for anyone who values public libraries, public schools, education, books, and, yanno... FREEDOM. Authors Against Book Bans is a coalition of authors who are fighting the good fight to help change that, and YOU can help! Authors David Levithan and Maggie Tokuda-Hall are two of the founding members of AABB, and they join me to discuss what book banning even is, why and where the problem is blowing up, and what readers and authors can do about it. Eritrosit Transfüzyonu-2023 AABB (Association fort he Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies) Uluslararası Kılavuzu Eritrosit transfüzyonu yaygın uygulanan ve pahalı bir işlemdir. Welcome back to Common Sense Medicine! For the post, skip down ~2 scrollsLong time, no see, you say. Well, that's true. I've been busy and not-so-busy these past few years, and the long overdue post about “where have you been, Shree?” is coming—I promise. But first, a reflection. Since 2018, when I started this show, the world of healthcare, and my own perspective about it, has changed tremendously. However, there is one constant: talking to people who are “in the weeds” (to borrow a corporate phrase) of the work is the best way to get up to speed in the space. There is so much happening in the world of healthcare like Generative AI, electronic health records, and biotech, and I want to write more about all of it. As I'm in a more “chill” part of medical school, I've been taking the time to talk to founders of interesting HealthTech startups to build a framework about where the industry is headed. When can I expect more posts?, you say. First of all, I'm not sure anyone is asking for more emails in their mailbox, but I hope that if you're subscribed, I'm providing some value. I'm not trying to clutter your email—I think there's a space for interesting conversations about healthcare around 1 time a month. Plus, most people just skim anyway so I'll try and keep the show notes and insights on the shorter side. Alright, now that I've gotten the niceties over with, here are the show notes.Forwarded this email? Subscribe below for musings about healthcare conversations with people who are much smarter than me.What is Anja Health? Anja Health is a health and technology company that provides cord blood, cord tissue, and placenta banking. They are one of the few companies in the world that offer these services. Anja Health's services include: * Freezing umbilical cord and placenta stem cells* Sending a kit to soon-to-be parents in preparation for their birth experience* Safely collecting and storing your baby's stem cells for future cell treatments* Providing an easy to use collection kit with FDA-approved materials* Manual lab processing for maximum stem cell volume* 20 years of secure cryogenic storage at -180°C* Personal support from a banking or birth expertAnja Health's mission is to create one more treatment option through the power of stem cells. Anja Health was founded by Kathryn Cross, just over a year after graduating from Wellesley. Kathryn shared her personal story of founding the company in memory of her brother Andrew, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after a near-death accident with me on Common Sense Medicine, and below is a summary of our conversation. Show Notes (with timestamps)* [00:02:18] Cord blood stem cell space.* Kathryn talks about a Duke University study which was a randomized, double-blind crossover trial on cerebral palsy (CP) treatment with autologous cord blood (CB). It didn't show statistically significant results between the study and control groups, but a significant difference was found between the group that received infusions with a higher dose of (>2.5 * 10^7 cells) versus those who did not. * Providers historically have not been educated about giving information about cord blood banking, and social media is easier to go direct to the customer to educate them about the cord blood banking. She spoke about creator-led businesses, which have greater trust (especially in the beginning) when they have relatability and value capture on their side. This was the enabling factor to gaining and acquiring their first few customers. * [00:07:45] Lessons from team members.* She was a younger founder, and she needed to read a lot of material around management to “learn the ropes.” She touches each part of business, but she has been decreasing her involvement with ops to focus on growth and marketing. She tried to find someone who is better than she is at parts of the business, and then aligning with them to achieve the goals which she has for Anja. * [00:11:19] Fundraising process and mistakes.* Kathryn talked about using a process to fundraise for a startup using Ryan Breslow's book Fundraising. He recommends to only fundraise for 3 months, and make sure that you don't fundraise too early before you have product-market fit because the growth will be very painful if so. Kathryn thought that she fundraised too early, and this was partly because she didn't have a process going into her fist fundraising round. * [00:15:17] Private blood banking - why should parents use it? * Kathryn says that most pregnant people should be using cord blood banking because the placenta and the cord blood bank can act as a sort of “insurance” against a worst case scenario. Physicians can use stem cells to prepare treatment and then Anja Health is able to release a patient's units to the provider, and then it's used to give the patient the stem cell treatment. * Shree's take: I'm not convinced that doing this by way of a private blood bank vs. a public blood bank is still reasonable in this day and age, because the cost doesn't justify the evidence which is currently available. If you're bullish on storing on a private blood bank, look for one which is AABB accredited (by the FDA, like Anja is). The one drawback from a public bank which I had noticed is that you might not get your cells if someone else had already used it, but looking at the Duke University study and others in the space, the blood collected might not be useful if you only have one child to do an autologous stem cell transplant—as most of the research is done in preclinical models. However, that's part of Anja's allure, because you might be able to use it in the next 20 years for therapies which haven't been discovered today. * [00:24:24] Using placenta stem cells.* When someone actually donates a blood bank sample, they can increase the density by first sorting it manually. Anja Health mentions that they can do it manually but other companies say that the automatic sorting helps them get rid of contaminants.* Shree's take: I think that this is a function of marketing—if Anja Health is able to capture more of the market and convince their buyers that automatic sorting = bad, and that manual sorting = personalized, then they can effectively control the narrative that their method is better. Kathryn also mentions that she doesn't have any statistics about how many people actually use their stem cells, which gives me pause. How useful could this be if people aren't using it and it's mostly a function of marketing? In fact, one paper shows that automatic sorting actually increases the yield of the cord blood separation. * [00:28:05] Stem cell research in pregnancy.* She's excited about more general parts of women's health related work — infertility and PCOS which came to mind. She also thinks that you shouldn't consume your placenta, ya nasty. * [00:29:24] Scaling content and creator burnout.* It's really hard to scale content because there's a threshold to how much content you can produce. She batches a lot of content, but it's hard to scale them. She had a consigliere who fed her research about content, but now she just does her own thing. She also interviews a lot of people in the space, like doulas, midwives, and lactation consultants. Kathryn thinks that now, she's more able to do speak about her interests “off the cuff” because she's just had so much experience in the space. * [00:34:07] Consuming information and deciphering.* Interestingly she says that lower-income families do a lot more research, read everything, and are more anxious with childbirth rather than those who come from a higher-income family. So, she tries to recommend evidence-based organizations to help families distinguish signal from noise. * [00:36:00] Recruiting. * She's still figuring out how to best recruit, but one of the things that she has to do in order to really put herself in a position for recruiting the best talent is to interview the person and make sure they gel with everyone on the team, whether they have the skills for the particular role that she's hiring for, and gradually hiring into the role (contractor to employee)* Another book from Ryan Breslow which she recommends is Recruiting* [00:45:57] Favorite guest and learning experiences.* Kathryn's question for me! Listen to the podcast to learn more. Thank you for subscribing to Common Sense Medicine! If you have any comments / questions, please reply to this email to let me know what you think. Also, I'm also on the hunt for new podcast guests. If you know anyone who you think would be a good fit (think people in healthtech or healthcare doing interesting, innovative things) feel free to let me know. That's all folks! Remember, it's just common sense. — Shree “I will never eat a placenta” Nadkarni This is a public episode. The fascinating history of the discovery of blood groups goes back to 1900 with the breakthrough that came when Dr. Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian scientist, discovered three human blood groups. These were the A, B, and O blood groups. Two students who worked with Karl Landsteiner discovered the fourth human blood group, the AB. These two were A. van Decastello and A. Sturli. These four blood groups together are what we today know as the ABO blood group system. In this podcast episode with Dr. Jill Storry, you will learn the fascinating journey behind discovering blood groups and stay up to date on the latest blood groups that have been discovered. About the Speaker: Jill Storry, PhD, Lund University, Sweden Dr. Jill Storry is a professor at the Division of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Lund University, and is responsible for the immunohematology laboratories in the Department of Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine. She is an American Association of Blood Banking (AABB) National Blood Foundation Scholar for her discovery of the genetic basis of the Vel blood group system. Her awards include the British Blood Transfusion Society's Margaret Kenwright and Race & Sanger awards, the AABB's Sally Frank Award, and an ISBT award for outstanding contributions to education. Dr. Storry has authored more than 60 original papers, reviews, and textbooks, and spoken at more than 100 international and national conferences and courses. She is a member of the editorial board of Transfusion Medicine Reviews, Transfusion and Immunohematology, and section editor for Vox Sanguinis.

Ep #049 - Future-proof your family's health. Preserving your umbilical cord and placenta is now easier and more affordable than ever. Recommended by physicians to help treat cancer, heart disease, liver disease, diabetes, and more - even for years to come. On this episode we are joined by Kathryn Cross, the Founder of Anja Health. Anja manually processes the cord blood, tissue, and placenta stem cells after birth - individualizing the approach as opposed to having a machine do it. When compared to automated processing, Anja's manual processing leads to almost 25% more stem cells being recovered and up to 80% less red blood cells contaminating the sample. After enrolling, Anja will send you a collection kit to get started. Once the collection kit is added to your hospital bag, let the hospital know prior to the birth. After the birth, Anja will handle the rest including viability testing, optimization, and cryopreservation within an AABB accredited lab.To learn more visit anjahealth.com. Donor and product safety has improved significantly over the last decade as a consequence of the introduction of measures such as evidence-based blood donor selection criteria. In parallel, the implementation of quality assurance programs based on good manufacturing practices has also played a key role in improving the safety and quality of blood and blood components. The main objective of a quality program within the blood bank and transfusion service is to minimize risk to safety and quality by ensuring that the lab's processes will reliably deliver safe blood and blood components. In many countries, implementation of a quality certificate program has become a regulatory or government requirement; however, an effective program not only forms the basis for safety but can also deliver benefits to the Blood Service beyond meeting compliance. Learn in this episode from AABB consulting services how commitment to safety and quality is available with the new AABB Quality Certificate Program – Based on AABB's Fundamental Standards for Blood Collection and Transfusion, the Certificate is an internationally recognized distinction, acknowledging your facility's commitment to a culture of quality and excellence. About our Speaker: Christine Bales is the AABB Vice President of the Consulting and Global Services and serves as a technical expert in Quality Management Systems for Blood Centers and Transfusion Services. Christine designs implementation models to be used as roadmaps for Blood Donor Centers and Transfusion Services' facility accreditation processes and quality system improvements. She has experience as an assessor for AABB and a CAP inspector. Christine has over 20 years of management experience in clinical laboratories, blood donor centers, and hospital-based transfusion services. During Christine's years as CEO and senior management, she led organizations through strategic planning, process improvement activities, and facility accreditation processes. Christine holds a Certificate in Organizational Leadership from Harvard University, a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Purdue University, and certifications in Medical Technology and Immunology from ASCP. She is a member of the AABB (Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies) ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology), ASQ (American Society for Quality), and CLSI (Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute).

Review the role of extended antigen typing or phenotyping in Transfusion Medicine. How this practice plays a significant role in the transfusion of sickle cell, thalassemia, and myelodysplastic syndrome patients as well as other chronically transfused patients, preventing the development of foreign antibodies which may avoid the challenges that come later with complex antibody problems and brings the additional benefit of allowing finding compatible blood for patients in need of a transfusion. In this podcast edition, we will explore those key points and more. About our Speaker: Tony S. Casina, MT(ASCP)SBB has worked in the blood banking industry for over 40 years with much of it in the commercial blood bank reagent manufacturers sector with hospital experience as a medical technologist and blood bank manager. There's one niche market within the device industry that rarely gets the attention it deserves: products designed for military applications and use in other emergency settings. In this episode of the Global Medical Device Podcast Jon Speer and his cohost, colleague and medical device guru Wade Schroeder, talk to guests Monti Leija and Robert Futch from the Delta Development Team, manufacturers of ruggedized thermal systems who specialize in military applications. Listen to this episode to learn about the Delta Development Team's journey designing their latest product the Autonomous Portable Refrigeration Unit (APRU) that provides a cooling and heating systems for extreme environments. Some of the highlights of the show include: APRU is medical refrigeration for medical professionals. It provides constant cooling of blood products, vaccines, virus samples, and temperature-controlled medications. APRU applications include military operations, disaster relief response, and emergency medical systems (EMS) because the device meets AABB guidelines and FDA regulations. The military provided end-user feedback on how it wants the APRU to function and perform. Therefore, the APRU is unique because it's small and runs on a battery that can be charged. Power of Innovation: The biggest power consumers are refrigerators and air conditioners—both require refrigeration. Obstacles and Challenges: Every time somebody goes through the medical device journey it involves learning and becoming aware of regulatory guidelines. Recommendations: Find the right consultants, team members, and standards management tools. Wade Schroeder, Greenlight Medical Device Guru, has been a major asset to the Delta Development Team by providing regulatory guidance. Testing Methodologies: Motivation is to meet extreme environment requirements and standards. Some manufacturers choose to not meet some standards to make mobile medical devices that don't work as well. APRU is the new standard. Root Cause and Right Configuration: Make minor adjustments to prototypes to reduce complexity, cost, and failure points via due diligence rather than rebuild.

Kaya Ilska is a free school meals student, coming from a single mother family. She is incredibly bright - and was predicted 4 A*s by her teachers, a set of grades high enough to meet her offer to study Medicine at UCL. But the government's exams algorithm this week downgraded her results down to AABB, which means she not only misses the UCL offer but also her back-up at Cardiff. On the podcast, Kaya and Fraser go through her options to conclude that the government's so-called 'triple lock' does very little to help cases like hers.

Minha mãe mora no sétimo. Quem me dera poder fazer judô". Meu pai me acompanhava em tudo do futsal. Se eu pedia a moto, o cara me emprestava. O maior defeito do Brasil é a escravidão. E aí vem a pandemia. As condições do meu filho? A literatura. Visuel © Pochette O Som Quente E O Das Neves de Wilson Das Neves E Conjunto See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In Episode 10, we interviewed Sébastien Loriot about CGAL. A software project that provides easy access to efficient and reliable geometric algorithms in the form of a C++ library. CGAL is used in various areas needing geometric computation, such as geographic information systems, computer aided design, molecular biology, medical imaging, computer graphics, and robotics. The library offers data structures and algorithms like triangulations, Voronoi diagrams, Boolean operations on polygons and polyhedra, point set processing, arrangements of curves, surface and volume mesh generation, geometry processing, alpha shapes, convex hull algorithms, shape analysis, AABB and KD trees...
Every two years, like it or not, our friends at the AABB issue a brand-new version of their Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services (though we usually just call it “Standards” for short). The 31st edition goes live on April 1, 2018, and it contains a number of important changes. Pat Ooley, Chair of the Blood Bank Transfusion Service Standards Committee, joins me to share his “Top 5 Changes” you need to understand and implement. Pat also takes some time to help us understand the role of this publication that impacts hundreds and hundreds of transfusion and donor facilities in the US and a few international countries. He also walks us through the entire process on how new and revised Standards come into existence.
The palate is located in the roof of the mouth. It separates the oral and nasal cavities and provides stability to the facial structures. When you touch the roof of your mouth with the tip of your tongue you will be hitting the hard palate. In breastfeeding, the hard palate's function is to assist with the positioning and stability of the nipple when drawn into the mouth.

The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Dr. Graham D. Sher, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Blood Services With A Bridge Across Silos: Collaboration and Leadership for Innovation and Better Value in Health Care While meaningful debate on health care has yet to make its way into the federal election, one thing that is not debatable is that good things happen when we collaborate for greater health care innovation, argues Dr. Graham Sher, CEO of Canadian Blood Services. Dr. Sher will share his organization's unique perspective, as a publicly funded, national health service delivery organization, on how collaboration, integration and innovation can improve system performance and patient outcomes, as well as equity and access to care. Innovation in health care is not just about technology, it's about thinking, acting and behaving differently. Dr. Sher will discuss how Canadian Blood Services' various programs, such as nationally shared blood inventory, organ donation and transplantation registries and bulk purchasing of plasma derived drugs, are examples of what's possible when we collaborate across provincial health system silos to benefit patients and deliver better value. One week prior to heading to the polls, we hope you will vote to join us for this important national perspective on health care reform. Biography: Graham has been with Canadian Blood Services since it began operations in September 1998. He first served as vice president of medical, scientific and clinical management, and was appointed CEO in June 2001. Graham continues to lead Canadian Blood Services through an extensive, multi year transformation journey. The early phases of this transformation focused on a comprehensive service delivery model redesign to ensure safety, adequacy and modernization of systems. Leveraging these early changes, Canadian Blood Services' current strategy positions the organization as a trusted partner in healthcare delivery across Canada and has at its roots a focus on quality excellence, sustainable efficiency and a committed, engaged workforce. Graham is a recognized expert in transfusion medicine and science, and is a sought after speaker both nationally and internationally. He sits on a number of blood system and healthcare related boards and advisory bodies, and has provided consulting support to other countries in the transformation of their blood systems. Graham is a founding member of the Alliance of Blood Operators and is the first international director on the board of the AABB, formerly the American Association of Blood Banks, serving as its president in 2013 and 2014. Beyond blood system governance, he is passionate about health system design and management, and is active in a number of areas of health system performance improvement and policy development. A hematologist by training, Graham acquired his medical and doctoral degrees at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his specialty certification at the University of Toronto. He was formerly a physician and scientist on staff at the Toronto Hospital and on faculty at the University of Toronto. He is happily married, has three sons, and is constantly struggling to find more time for his other passion: photography Speaker: Dr. Graham D.
