Episde #228 Meet Carol Glasgow: The 61-Year-Old Martial Arts Powerhouse Redefining Aging and Femininity

In Episode 228 of the Six Weeks to Fitness podcast, we had the privilege of welcoming a true force of nature—Carol Glasgow. At 61 years young, Carol is shattering stereotypes and proving that strength, elegance, and age can absolutely co-exist. A 4th Degree Black Belt in Hapkido, self-defense and kickboxing instructor, and founder of Kick Fever Fitness, Carol embodies what it means to age powerfully and purposefully. Born and raised in London, Carol was an athlete from an early age, later relocating to the gritty streets of Brooklyn, New York. There, she honed her craft in the martial arts world—an arena often dominated by men—and emerged as a respected leader and inspiration for women of all ages. During the interview, Carol shared how martial arts gave her more than just physical strength. It taught her discipline, perseverance, and self-belief. From earning her first black belt in 2001 to her 4th degree in 2024, she emphasized that the journey was never just about the belts—it was about personal growth, patience, and becoming the best version of herself. Carol also delved into the mental and emotional benefits of martial arts for women, especially in a world where self-defense is more critical than ever. Her insights into confidence-building, body awareness, and emotional resilience resonated deeply. And yes—she even revealed her secrets to maintaining her chiseled six-pack abs, proving once again that age is merely a number. With nearly 30 years in the game, Carol continues to change lives through her fitness brand, Kick Fever Fitness. Her passion for helping women embrace both their femininity and fierceness is contagious—and her message is clear: You're never too old to start, and you're far stronger than you think. If you're seeking inspiration, empowerment, or just a reminder of what's possible with heart and hustle, don't miss this episode. Carol Glasgow is living proof that powerful women never age—they evolve.

She is also working towards her Yoga Therapist certification.   Katie specializes in setting audacious goals and accelerating the process of attaining them by using all her acquired skills. Tammy Parlour, is the co-founder of Women's Sport Trust.  She works with leaders from across sport, media and business to understand how to practically raise visibility, increase impact and create a stronger women's sport ecosystem and was awarded an MBE in 2019 for services to gender equality in sport. She is a Master in the Korean martial art of Hapkido, having practiced for over 40 years, and currently runs a club in central London. She is a club rep on The FA Women's National League Board since the end of 2023 and sums up her approach to life succinctly on her biography on LinkedIn as “I love learning”. Our conversation starts with how she discovered martial arts and hapkido in particular and the collateral impact of building extreme proficiency in the sport – in particular how moving to each belt level required “inhabiting” the roles and responsibilities that came with each level (e.g. to teach other classes).  We trace then her move back to the UK from the US and setting up a studio in the discipline. This discussion is a particularly personal one, as we explore the benefits that sport and discipline can bring to an impressionable teenage mind, particularly one that might have struggled with other issues such as an eating disorder, and we discuss how this informed a life-long mission for Tammy to further equality in sport and the creation of a stronger women's sport ecosystem.  The themes of voice, empowerment, inner strength, discipline, loyalty and passion are all intertwined in this conversation, which we bring to you as a special bonus in the aftermath of the Olympics 2024, which were a triumph for diversity and inclusion.

Steve shares his story from growing up as one of five siblings to a single mother, to his different working careers through to becoming Australia's first official UFC Referee. It's always difficult to be in positions where everyone can scrutinise your actions and I don't envy any Judge or Referee in combat sports! That said, Steve takes it all in his stride and really focuses on the people around him in life. I also found it interesting to hear his stories from pawn broking, sign writing to starting in Hapkido to the impact that a 'friend' can have on your life. Everyone needs an 'Eddie' that ignites that little bit of fire within them. We cover a lot of ground and I hope you all enjoy Steve's story! We are all fighters. You against you, we all struggle with something in our lives that tests our will, our strength. How can we martial our own forces, body, mind and spirit? Why do we need this discipline within our self? Going to the edge of our comfort zone to test and see what we are really made of.  You could climb to the top of a mountain, run a race, or perhaps try something called Martial Arts. When I lived in NYC I studied Kung Fu and then landed on a marital arts called Hapkido, a Korean kickboxing and martial arts technique of it's own. There are many styles and schools of martial arts and many benefits from studying it. We invited someone to talk about all this, who not only found his way to martial arts but went so far to open his own school. “I never wanted to be the greatest martial artist ever, I always saw myself as a teacher.  I want to influence people, I don't want them to be impressed by what I do, I want to be a vehicle for them to learn. To me integrity is a moment by moment choice.  My work is to challenge myself to choose the way I respond to situations.  Who we are is more important than what we do.”My guest this episode is Fariborz Azhakh, who is a master of Hapkido and a student of Master Steve Sexton.  He is the founder of Team Karate Centers and over the years has built on the foundations of Hapkido to develop a system of multicultural martial arts based on usefulness;  one that draws upon principles from a variety of fighting styles and ranges, including kickboxing, grappling, trapping, weapons, joint locks, and meditation. The “Hapkido Blend,” allows all students to cultivate their own individual art within the traditions of Hapkido. Throughout his journey, he repeatedly cites his teachers and heroes as his greatest inspirations, among them: Benny Urquidez, Ji Han Jae, Ron Balicki, Stuart Quan, and Simon and Phillip Rhee.  Sensei Fariborz is also a pioneer of martial arts on the internet, he created the first major martial arts resource website and online magazine back in the 1990s when websites were almost unheard of. This episode is all about becoming a master teacher.  My key takeaway is that self-defense and self-development must be taught as in integrated curriculum.  As martial artists and martial arts teachers we have a responsibility to our students and to ourselves, to learn, practice, master, functionalism and maintain not only our physical skills but also our personal and interpersonal skills as a combined approach.  We also dive deep into the distinction between a Teacher, Instructor, and Coach.  Sensei Fariborz and I also discuss that the common thread amongst the great masters is that they are real.  Their character and competency are congruent on and off the matts.  Martial Arts is a way of life, and to truly understand the life changing benefits of the Arts we must have great teachers that can be pointers to the way.  I had a great time talking story with Sensei Fariborz, his knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the way of martial arts is truly inspirational. Tune in for another fantastic episode.

And a much greater understanding and enjoyment of what I'm doing. Dr. Kobey Schwayder - Episode 832 Borrowing and integrating techniques from different martial arts is not a new thing. Well, I'd like to say that Carrie, Tim and Rob are all back this week because the madness of Summer has come to an end, but that wouldn't be true, the madness of Fall is just upon us! Nevertheless, we did find the first week in a month that all of us were either healthy and in cell-phone range and we couldn't be happier about it.  The only thing that could possibly spoil this reunion euphoria is having to spend an hour talking about The Billy Jack series - and here we are! Thanks to Patreon supporter Gavin, we slogged our way through about 100 hours (ish) of a very Caucasian man, casting himself as an Indigenous man/Vietnam war vet and leveraging his Korean martial art, Hapkido, to take down real bad guys. If you're not entirely sold here, check out the episode! In worth mentioning, Carrie covers the newly released Thor: Love and Thunder and Rob attempts to ensure you never want to see the decent movie Day Shift. ***************************************************************** Love the Podcast? Today's conversation with Jennifer Cassetta was incredible. She shared a powerful story about her experience in New York on 9/11, how she found safety in her martial arts dojo, and how that moment and that feeling would become a thru line for her work in self-defense and personal development. We talked about confidence and our relationship with ourselves and different avenues, including meditation, we can take for personal growth. I got to learn a little more about her upcoming book, The Art of Badassery, and cannot wait to dive into it. Jenn is absolutely amazing, and you're going to love overhearing our conversation in the booth!   About the Guest:  Jennifer Cassetta is a nationally recognized speaker, empowerment coach and self defense expert. Equipped with her 3rd degree black belt in Hapkido (hop-kee-doe) she's been teaching tens of thousands of women how to take their power back from predatory behavior and power up their minds, bodies and spirits for over two decades. Jenn has been featured on The Today Show, The Doctors, Rachael Ray and was a featured expert on ABC-TV's My Diet is Better Than Yours. She's taught Jenny McCarthy, Marie Osmond, Bethenny Frankel and even Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia herself, how to kick butt while wearing their favorite heels.   Connect with Jenn Cassetta and learn more: https://jennifercassetta.com https://www.instagram.com/jenncassetta/ (https://www.instagram.com/jenncassetta/) https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifer-cassetta/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifer-cassetta/) About the Host:  Friends! Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me:   I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh!  I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach.  If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com.
