Kit Dale started Jiujitsu at the relatively late age of 28, with a background in Rugby. However, he used a unique approach to learning and training to get his Black Belt in 4 years, winning several world championships along the way. Kit teaches a revolutionary approach to learning jiujitsu, but it really applies to learning anything. In his words: “The better you are as a coach, the more you will create scenarios that allow students to figure things out themselves.” Today, as well as being an online jiujitsu coach, Kit is pursuing excellence as a screenwriter and actor. This week I chat with Kit Dale. Kit is an Australian black belt, actor, writer, and filmmaker. He is known as a colourful personality in BJJ, and for getting his black belt in an incredibly short amount of time. He is one of the first people in BJJ who advocated the use of task-focussed games in training to accelerate skill development. We discuss gym politics, his philosophy on teaching BJJ, his filmmaking career, and politically correctness. Today I welcome Kit Dale and Greg Souders on to the show.Kit is well know in the jiu-jitsu world for his rapid development in the sport and his achievements at high level no-gi grappling in a short few years. An advocate of 'learning through trial and error and one that has been preaching the anti-drilling message for years' it seemed fitting that I get him on to talk with Greg Souders.Greg himself has emerged as a leading advocate of the ecological approach and in doing so, brought a lot of the science and research from the academic side onto the mats and into a broader conversation. Kit has recently launched his 'Task Based Games' series which is really the first of it's kind in bringing this gamification approach to the wider grappling community. A long but interesting convo between the two coaches. Thank to all that download, listen and take the time to reach out!
Today, I chat with Noah Schaffer from the Standard Jiu-Jitsu Grappling Team, mentored by Greg Souders. Unlike my usual guests who are coaches or academics, Noah stands out as a student who has embraced the ecological approach to skill development. Despite being only 17, his insights into the sport and its methodologies are profound. While many might assume he's echoing Coach Souders, Noah showcases a unique understanding. He's definitely one to watch in the sport's future. After recording with Greg and Kit Dale, known for championing live resistance training, I spoke with Noah. He even invites anyone interested to visit the Standard team in Rockville, Maryland. While I aim to delve more into MMA, the upcoming episodes remain grappling-focused. Your support and feedback inspire me to continue this journey.

Training in martial arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, wrestling, & Muay Thai is my outlet for improving my mental health and becoming a better person. Shop our apparel line made for the Jiu-Jitsu athlete at https://jiujitsuoutlet.com/ On the 82nd episode of the Jiu-Jitsu Outlet show, I talk to BJJ legend and 3rd degree black belt Kit Dale. Kit Dale received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in only four years. This achievement makes him one of the fastest individuals to ever earn a black belt in the martial art. Not only did he achieve his black belt in a remarkable amount of time, but he backed it up with wins in high level tournaments. Kit racked up an impressive amount of wins in between 2013-2017. He made his way to the ADCC world championships after a win at the Japanese ADCC Trials in 2017. After his time of competing in high level grappling events, Kit decided to make a career change. Kit wants to associate the "Kit Dale" brand with film making, rather than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He now spends most of his days writing and working on his latest screenplay. Wanting to give back to the Jiu-Jitsu community, Kit has designed a program to help BJJ practitioners level up their game using some of the methods he has developed over the years. In his latest course, Kit introduces the concept that playing "task based games" is better than the standard way that Jiu-Jitsu classes drill and practice. On this episode of the Jiu-Jitsu Outlet show, we talk about why drilling in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is useless and why playing games is a better way to actually learn and develop. We also talk about how training in BJJ has helped Kit's mental health and what principles he feels writing, film-making, and martial arts have in common. Kit believes that sport is 90% mental 10% physical, but most spend the majority of the time drilling techniques (physical), Kit spends the majority of the time problem solving in live training (training the mind). While other people developed their body as muscle memory, Kit developed his mind which he refers to as "mental memory." Kit Dale is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is Australia's most decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete of all time. Kit Dale is an Australian grappler, a learning enthusiast, and one of Australia's best BJJ black belts of all time. Kit earned his black belt in less than 5 years, a feat that he largely attributes to his learning approach. We discuss Kit's career, how to learn better and faster, how to balance goals with responsibilities (e.g. work) as a part-time grappler. Kit's Website: https://kitdaletraining.com/ Kit's Instagram: @kitdaleofficial
Kit Dale was born on January 24, 1986, in Melbourne, Australia, growing up in the area’s eastern suburbs. During his formative years Dale practiced a number of athletic activities, from karate to inline hockey, as well as Australian football (Aussie rules), a sport he competed in extensively prior to jiu-jitsu. Australian rules football is widely recognized as one of the most physical sports in the world, generally played by large individuals. Although a very athletic competitor himself, Kit lacked the physicality of some of the other players, a handicap Dale sought to overcome by learning a few grappling tricks, starting his jiu-jitsu training in 2008 with Robert Parmakovski – a man who would, years later, become Kit’s own student. BJJ came natural to Dale, who soon started allocating more of his time to grappling and less to Aussie rules football. While climbing the ranks of jiu-jitsu Dale trained with Bernie Jenkins (up to blue belt) and Peter De Been (up to brown belt), while also doing plenty of training and experimentation on his own or with friends/students. Once the highly decorated grappler, Yuri Simões moved to Australia, Kit started training with the Brazilian. The two established a strong relationship as friends and training partners, and it was Yuri who promoted Dale to black belt on June, 2013. At the time of the ceremony, Dale had just under 5 years of training, this being one of the fastest rises to the rank recorded by then. Dale would later move to California, USA, one of jiu-jitsu’s epicenters in order to improve his grappling skills while also attempting further his acting career. Topics Discussed In This Episode: His early interests that led him to BJJ His rapid success in the world of BJ Challenging the status quo in BJJ. Live training as opposed to drilling. Kit’s method of “Specific Training” Improvement through active problem-solving His personal keys to a rewarding and happy life His recent interest in a career as an actor His relationship to problem-solving and the Socratic Method How he applies his methodology of BJJ mastery to the rest of his life. www.artistdecoded.com
Part 2 of the non-live broadcast from Nogi Worlds in Anaheim, California, brought to you by our friends at Tap Cancer Out. With us today, we have multiple-time world champion and ultra savage competitor Talita Alencar. Then super celebrity and Aussie BJJ representative Kit Dale sat down and shared some stories about his acting career. He even gave us a little sample of his American accents. Then the legendary JT Torres joined us with one of his blackbelts, Weiss “Kimura Trapstar” Sakhizada. We talked about cross-training politics, wrestlers who use jiu-jitsu techniques in wrestling matches, oil-checking in the wrestling world, and eventually we got to chattin' about the haunted houses, and spooky vibes in the basement at Sucker Free Jiu-Jitsu in Long Island, NY. Also, lots of helpful information through out the episode from Hywel Teague. Huge thanks to Tap Cancer Out for sponsoring the episode. Check them out at www.tapcancerout.org. Kit Dale is an Australian Black Belt and the owner of http://www.kitdaletraining.com/ (www.kitdaletraining.com) , which is one of the worlds leading online training resources for BJJ. He spoke about overcoming self-limiting beliefs that held him back for many years, and how mentors helped him through this process. He also talked about the importance of surrounding yourself with likeminded people. My takeaway from this episode came towards the end of the interview when he shared the 80/20 rule, which is also known as the Power Law or “Pareto Law”, and how he applies in jiu-jitsu and business, which inspired to title this episode The 80/20 Rule in BJJ & Life. Stick around for my final thoughts after the interview when I expand on the topic of the 80/20 Rule and how you can apply in your life. Stay tuned right after Jiu-Jitsu Tribe's message. OSS! Episode #21 of The Unknown Strength Podcast features the Australian actor, BJJ world champion and man behind the hilarious skits all over the internet, Kit Dale. What an honor and pleasure it was to sit down with Kit, in Melbourne, who spoke candidly of his journey and explosive rise as an athlete and innovator on the world stage, to transitioning into film as an actor, as well as how he has also negotiated a lifetime of anxiety and learning to negotiate with it. Kit also elaborates on his controversial philosophy on developing in jiujitsu and the utility of drilling versus the conceptual problem solving approach he endorses, citing “repetition is the killer of creativity”. Some great conversations with a very interesting man – tune into his upcoming match against Tommy Langaker at the ADCC Nordic Open, September 8th.
